..Brass scrap at a shipyard
Posted by: Skip at November 28, 2019 10:37 AM (ZCEU2) Phosphor Bronze (what most ship's propellers larger than 42 in. dia. are made from) has a spot market price of $1.54/lb. in today's listings. But even classic small boat engines used to use a lot of phosphor bronze props. The 13"x13", three bladed bronze prop on the New Dawn cost about $700 in 1999 dollars. Take that $1.54 per pound price, and go figure what a two-ton prop off of just a 100 ft. Gulf of Mexico shrimping boat is worth. It's enough to make ya wanna salvage shipwrecks. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at November 28, 2019 10:55 AM (WI7YS) ***** Thanks FS - was thinking of re-posting it here as I think it bears it - your post sealed the deal. Original post follows from morning thread: So- Your Man Publius Redux reporting in at the end of the day here in Hong Kong. A fine Thanksgiving meal was had, out, at the American Club (in Town) in Central. A fine American sauvignon blanc accompanied a lovely several course meal ( Shrimp Cocktail followed by squash soup, turkey and all the trimmings and then pumpkin custard pie). A before dinner drink in the bar (Woodford's Reserve on a large rock) was memorable. It was excellent and the club is wonderful. My Hong Kong friends had never had a real American Thanksgiving before. They were enthralled and enraptured. The talk of the table, and the town, really? President Donald J Trump and how much everyone was in awe of his signing the pro democracy bills sent to him by Congress. The Hong Kongers know this is a thumb in the eye of China, that China expressly threatened the President and the US if he did so and know that it makes the trade agreement more difficult - and - and Trump signed it anyway saying "we stand with the people of Hong Kong." Hong Kongers know that this took balls. So much so that after dinner, when we went out onto the terrace and looked down into Central we could see a large gathering of pro-democracy protesters who had gathered to celebrate, complete with a stage and American flags. Soon, wafting up from down below came the first strains of The Star Spangled Banner which then rang out loud and clear. We, and especially your man, were overcome. There had to be about 2-3,000 of them. It was hard to tell as it was very dusty and there was something in my eye. Truly an amazing day. Happy Thanksgiving Horde! God bless us all, all Americans and all lovers of freedom and liberty, everywhere. A turtleneck sweater is like an artificial foreskin for your head. Wikipedia says that Wadsworth started out studying engineering, but switched tracks to art, winning a scholarship to the Slade School. He spent WWI painting "dazzle" camouflage on ships, said camouflage having arisen out of some theories that he and other Vorticist artists had developed. The idea behind dazzle camouflage was not to hide the ship entirely (it sucked at that), but rather to create a confusing jumble of lines that made it hard to judge the range, bearing, and course of the ship. You can easily judge the "woke" crowd's reaction to anything whatsoever by asking just one question: Is the thing fun, morally admirable, or productive? If the answer is yes, it's racist. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at November 28, 2019 11:52 AM (oQp6r) 208
Nice art, CBD. Looks like it was ready to install on one of Titanic's sister ships (if a bit small for that class).

These enjoyable things, apparently, are raaacist, colonialist and offensive. ::eyeroll:: And everyone quoted appears to be lamenting that their economies run on tourism. Posted by: Dr Alice Two points:1) Tiki bars and Polynesian Pop have nothing to do with authentic, brutal, bloodthirsty polynesian culture, so who's being appropriated?2) If you're unhappy with being reliant on tourism for your living, why didn't you get an engineering degree? I hope for the best for those in Hong Kong, but there are several factors that do not bode well for their future. Publius surely has a broader perspective, but listening to Kyle Bass paints their future as more dim.
For one thing much of their trade power has been decentralized into China "proper" (if that's the right term). Plus the huge input from the US into China made them prosper, and that is changing direction now. And there are people/institutions now, that can't get their money out of China ... so they want Trump to get some deal, submit to China ... so they don't lose their money. https://youtu.be/4s6wC6PbpLI?t=1671 Posted by: illiniwek at November 28, 2019 12:16 PM (Cus5s) 252
