Study: Starbucks Foot Traffic Down 6.8% After "All Homeless Bums Are Welcome to Shoot Up In Our Bathrooms" Policy

Woke/broke: The cycle accelerates.

Foot traffic was most reduced at Starbucks located close to a homeless shelter, and less reduced the further the store was placed from a homeless shelter.

Academics from the University of Texas at Dallas Jindal School of Management and Boston College Carroll School of Management, in collaboration with SafeGraph, released a comprehensive research study that revealed Starbucks visits declined 6.8%, relative to nearby restaurants and cafes, after the company changed to an open bathroom policy.

...

Key Findings from the study:

The decline was 84% larger for stores near homeless shelters

The policy also led to fewer citations for public urination nearby store locations, but had no effect on other similar public order crimes

Individuals visiting a Starbucks reduced the amount of time they spent in the store by 4.2%

More affluent customers reduced their visits more, but black and white customers were equally deterred

The study indicates the potential loss in sales when a store goes from providing for customers only, to credible potential customers, to those with no prospect of being customers. More importantly, allocating these resources to non-paying members of the public can have outsized effects on sales by deterring paying customers. The cost is actually lost sales, not just the possible additional staffing costs to keep the bathrooms clean.

Comics Matter had an interesting point, comparing the loss of business at Starbucks and the flops of Terminator and Charlie's Angels: #Woke companies keep chasing "phantom customers" while alienating actual customers.

In the case of Starbucks, they're letting homeless bums sit in the limited number of chairs and thus deterring paying customers from entering.

In Hollywood, and at #Woke Marvel Comics, they're alienating the audience they actually have but which they openly despise -- older men with traditional notions of "male gender roles," often white -- in order to market all of their books to the audience they wish they could have, non-white girls and women and members of the LGBT alphabet soup.

Did the makers of Terminator: Dark Fate think that the usual audience for a Terminator movie would enjoy a heavy-handed racial revenge murder fantasy featuring a Hispanic Terminator killing scores of ICE agents and Border Patrol officers?

They couldn't have though that -- but they thought the phantom audience of #Woke young minorities would love it.

And most girls and women and most members of the LGBT alphabet soup do not like stories which are mostly about combat.

They're intentionally trolling and outright insulting the actual customer base, in order to curry favor with a broke-ass sad-losers-on-Twitter phantom customer base.

A phantom customer base that never becomes real.

The actual audience for this fare departs, and the phantom audience never comes to replace it.

But they do get Retweets from #Woke racists and sexists on Twitter -- which, unfortunately, are not a valuable commodity which can be exchanged for cash.

But they continue to prioritize their businesses towards accumulating huge piles of meaningless Twitter "You Go Girl" affirmations while deprioritizing actual sales to actual customers.

And then they wonder why they're losing money and market share.

But hey -- one day, those Twitter retweets are going to be worth their weight in gold.

(Spoiler: electronic messages have no weight at all, or a subatomic weight if you count electrons, and therefore their weight in gold is either zero or practically zero. I mean, electrons have so little mass that they're routinely assumed to be zero even when calculating the weight of mere protons and neutrons in a single atomic nucleus. But enjoy your hoard of Twitter Affirmation Wealth, gals!)

I buy either WM's French Roast, $3.88 for 10 oz., or a coffee-with-chicory brand from a local chain grocery, $4.88 for the same. Since I use 4-5 teaspoons a day, it takes me a while to use that up. Let's say 20 days, shall we? At the higher price, that's .24/day, divided by 4 cups, so .06/cup.

Funny, that's about what diners used to charge for coffee, between a nickel and a dime per cup. . . .

71 what if - and I'm just spitballin' here - what if the social benefits of lining up behind this kind of madness exceeds the financial benefits of doing the financially prudent thing?

Meaning: if you're in the senior leadership of Company X you are probably doing pretty well. You're never going to miss a meal, your kids go to good schools, etc.

What you may NOT have is the 'social wealth' that you want. But you can gain that social wealth with the right kind of virtue signaling, the kind that earn you plaudits from the good people, the right sort of folk. The intelligentsia/glitterati and such.

So...while the rest of us think "doing this makes no sense. It will result in decreased traffic, lower share price, etc."...we're not evaluating risk/reward in the same way as those making the decisions.

In other words "Get Woke, Go Broke" is true but it misses the point of what motivates the people making these decisions.

A drop-off of 100% in those locations probably shouldn't move the needle for Starbucks foot traffic overall.

So I am curious about what else is going on. It could be something like a sympathy strike ("this doesn't happen at my Starbucks, but this policy is asinine and I'm not going regardless") but I would doubt that the boycott was that big. Maybe it is. I suspect there are probably a lot of other factors in the overall decline - like competition (Dunkin Donuts, the improving McCafe product line at McDonald's, shifting to other upper-middle eateries like Panera (which if my local one is indication, has lots of affluent people in droves), and who knows who else), changing tastes, etc.

I am glad to see the prime targets around homeless populations are being driven down so far that any reasonable company would cancel the location.

88 Comics Matter had an interesting point, comparing the loss of business at Starbucks and the flops of Terminator and Charlie's Angels: #Woke companies keep chasing "phantom customers" while alienating actual customers.

That's been a problem for a while now with comics, for example. There are unreached customer bases and you need to find new people to replace the aging comic book fan, but they are looking in all the wrong places. The crayola-haired wokestress and fay transgenderd boi is not going to be interested incomics no matter what you publish. They're not reading much of anything but texts and tweets.

The principle of expanding your audience is rock solid, they're just doing it all wrong.

+++++++++++
I was talking with a guy at Starbuck's corporate (totally unrelated topic) and finally heard a reasonable answer to the "why is your coffee bad?" question. I have heard lots of reasons that didn't make sense - primarily that they have a huge supply chain and over-roasting makes that easier (but McDonald's, Dunkin, etc. don't have that problem and are in the same situation).

He told me that it is because of what they sell. Starbucks doesn't sell much actual coffee, but they sell a ton of coffee-themed candy (like the Frapachinno, sweet mochas, etc.). In order for coffee flavor to come through in those drinks *at all,* the coffee input needs to be bitter and incredibly strong - far more so than you would want for an actual cup of coffee.

Dunno if it's true, but it's the first explanation I heard that made even a little bit of sense.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 18, 2019 03:08 PM (I2dne)

123 The "homeless" problem is not a "homeless" problem,. It's a mental health problem. Back in the old days, the cops in upstanding towns and cities would run any bums out of town on a rail. Or they were locked up in mental asylums or jails. Then folks decided this was cruel (which it was) and decided to change the laws so you couldn't round up and lock away insane homeless people anymore. But they went too far with this, so the authorities aren't allowed/don't have the resources allocated to get these people off the street and get them someplace where they can get help, and now we have the problem we have today, which is mentally sick homeless people roaming the country that nobody knows what to do with. It's sad.

125 ace: "Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone have any ideas why Dunkin Donuts kinda sucks when I make it at home?"

No idea. But if you really like coffee, buy a little coffee grinder and a Mr. Coffee (for about $30.00 total) and grind your coffee beans fresh (or small batches) and make it as weak or strong as you want. Ground beans lose flavor and go stale pretty quickly. Whole, fresh beans preserve better and you'll get a fuller flavor profile.

Once you go fresh ground beans, you never go back. You also save a lot of money compared to OTC fare.

Where it's legal, a 95% CBD/5% THC blend works for me. Knocks me out so cold I don't even wake up to pee. And the tiny amount of THC won't get you high. No morning side effects either.

153 A 6.8% decline is small price to pay if you don't actually have to pay for it ... which the Woke Managers/Executives at Woke Mega-Corporations usually don't.

It mostly comes out of shareholder value rather than manager/executive pay.

154 123 The "homeless" problem is not a "homeless" problem,. It's sad.

Yep. It's easier to have grandma sequestered away in a nursing home than it is to get a drug-addled bum off the street.

I wonder, are there any comparable 'studies' about the decline in the SciFi book market? I do know that the value of a Hugo Award, in terms of it getting me to buy a particular book, has dropped to at least zero.

In fact, it's a negative selling point now for me. But is it widespread?

Posted by: GnuBreed at November 18, 2019 03:14 PM (Z4rgH)

176 No idea.

Posted by: AnonyBotymousDrivel at November 18, 2019 03:08 PM (6eEQ+)
+++++++++++++
Seconded. If you're willing to spend a bit more, get a burr grinder and keep it a little bit course (better flavor transfer into the final product in my experience) and, if you really want to shoot the moon and don't care about programmability but want your coffee made quickly and well, pick up a home version of the Bunn commercial coffee maker (I think they run about a hundred bucks). Brews a pot in about three minutes.

It's all about what you put into it in terms of the coffee. The green-label Costco coffee (bean) is actually decent and is comparatively good value.

My personal experience has not been awesome - I got some of their CAF (caffeinated as fuck) and while it was indeed CAF it was, to my taste, harsh. Maybe to you its good. But for me, the viral videos don't outweigh the taste, and asking 2x the cost of other K-cups its bad ROI. For me.

Plus I got off of I95 near Savannah to go to their coffee shop but couldnt find it. The next time I came through there I paid closer attention to the signs and was able to figure out I had to go a couple miles down the road (to the 9-Line factory) to get there. It was a Saturday, they opened at 8, and it was 740 and I had another 400 miles to drive. So it just didn't work out. That isn't their fault. But, yeah, it just hasn't clicked for me.

The difference is that he was "inclusive" in his insulting - all were fair game and it was all in fun. The #woke crowd actually despises their audience. Here the mere fact that I chose a criminal lifestyle engaging in crimes on a regular basis should in no way allow coffee shops to discriminate against me as an habitual criminal. Even my leftist sister up in Washington state was offended by the Seattle ordinance recently found constitutional by the Washington State Supreme Court that landlords must rent on a first come, first serve basis and no criminal history checks or such allowed. She seemed to think that this would increase the homelessness problem by decreasing the number of people willing to be landlords. I told her that she was beginning to sound like a Republican.

In the final days of the Obama administration, the U.S. allowed the U.N. Security Council to pass a resolution declaring the settlements a flagrant violation of international law.

The new US Position:

U.S. repudiates a 1978 State Department legal opinion that held that civilian settlements in the occupied territories are inconsistent with international law.

The Trump administration views the opinion, the basis for long-standing U.S. opposition to expanding the settlements, as a distraction and believes any legal questions about the issue should be addressed by Israeli courts

Calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law has not advanced the cause of peace, Pompeo says in the draft. The hard truth is that there will never be a judicial resolution to the conflict, and arguments about who is right and who is wrong as a matter of international law will not bring peace.

307 It's lefties in these companies kissing ass, trading favors, being incestuous and getting promoted. They are the ones making these decisions. They aren't trying to make money, or being pressured by twitter.

They are solely responsible, inflicting a personal vision of the world on all of us as revenge for being subjected to things that most other people like (eg heterosexuality, criminals facings justice) for their whole life. They think those visions are the reason why so many people like those things. They don't understand that these old media *reflect* society rather than create it.

This is their version of "doing something" while every other aspect of their life is full of misery and of people who have "done them wrong". This is their power. Their proof that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Worst of all, in their mind, the failure to make money actually proves them correct, and they double down.

We took the consequences just fine. And would do it again.

There are two forms of progressivism; Teddy Roosevelt and Woody Wilson. Teddy wanted to prevent any business or organization from getting too big to preserve the Jeffersonian ideal. Woody wanted to preserve big finance as 'too big to fail' in order to finance the Jeffersonian ideal. Today's progressive wishes to kill the Jeffersonian ideal to receive their annual stipend.

328 Oh geez, it's even more woke than I figured:
"The messaging for women and girls [in this movie] is not so
dissimilar to the messaging of the TV show," Cantillon said. "Which is:
Women can do anything if they're given the opportunity, and they're
stronger when they work together."
But the message of women's empowerment and feminism rings differently in the wake of the Time's Up and #MeToo movements.
"This
story is about a whistleblower who is not supported and believed in her
job," Banks said. "And to me, this is partly a story about a woman who
turns to a group of women who say, 'We believe you and support you and
we'll help you.' And I think that's really powerful. And there are
really great men helping as well."

Uh, I watched Charlies Angels in the 70's and I, just an elementary school kid, got that theme of the show was: "Detective shows are fun but wouldn't it be more fun it the detectives were't Jim Rockford types, but instead young babes who go undercover in bikinis, run after bad guys while braless and stuff?"

435 Serious question about the whole "go woke go broke" meme.

Does anybody ever lose any money as a result of the whole "go woke" thing? I do understand that movies bomb and studios fail to make money, but corporations are not actually people. Does any actual live human being ever suffer a loss of income as a result of "going woke"? Hollywood moguls and woke act-x-rs are still making a ton of money despite all these bombs. Corporate executives at these woke corporations are still pulling down mega-salaries and mega-bonuses, despite losses of income. So my serious question is whether any real, tangible humans suffer income loss from woke-ness? In Hollywood, and in corporate boardrooms, it looks to me like the answer is no. Money keeps pouring in from other woke corporations and woke foundations to offset the loss of actual money from actual consumers. Am I wrong?

OK, please go back to your normal programming.

These people sit there for hours and hours, not interacting with anyone else and not buying anything. If not for people coming in, buying coffee, and leaving that place couldn't possibly make money.

445 You have to wonder if the real plan with the woke money 'losing' movies is just a public money laundering scheme ya know?

How it it really any different than paying Big Ears or Bill "Buddy of Epstein" Clinton for their 'thoughts' when they get half a million for a 30 minute speech.

446 "I just heard that Marlon Brando was either so drunk or so not-bothering in Superman that all of his lines were written on pieces of paper in his eyeline.

Okay, that's no big deal. But here's the kicker: He had one piece of paper taped to the face of the actress playing his wife, Lara or whatever. So that he could read his lines to her, right off of her face.

There was a Dick Van Dyke show that featured that very same gag! It was "The Young Surgeons" where he's playing a doctor and finds out just before filming that he'd learned the wrong part, and instead of easy reaction shots, he's got pages of difficult medical jargon he has to recite. They end up writing his lines on his palms, fingers, cigarettes and even the face of the actor sharing the scene with him. It starts at about 17:45 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eKY7FkBLeo

448 I switched to 7-11 coffee: they have a good coffee bar with various flavors and different creamers sweeteners, and you can give them a phone number and get ANY size for a dollar.
And the seventh, I believe, is free. Can't beat that deal with a stick!

449 I bet woke Charlie's Angels isn't genderswap Charlie's Angels, even though the woke thing to do is to genderswap all the things... Obviously not all. Women are still more or less women (though some might be trans) but men? They must be done away with.
