Mid-Morning Art Thread [Kris]
Et in Arcadia ego
Nicolas Poussin Nicholas Poussin was one of the most influential painters of the Baroque era. While other Baroque artists were composing art with dramatic forms and lighting, vivid, radiant color, and huge action, Poussin’s art is quiet scenes of heavy classicism. “Poussinisme” would come to describe art that emphasizes form over color, with clean lines and defined pictorial regions, and compositions that appealed to the mind rather than the heart or emotions. His style would define French tastes for almost a century, until the rise of Rococo. This work is a pastoral, artworks in idyllic landscapes that a viewer is supposed to just enjoy. The subjects are usually shepherds who while away their days playing their pan flutes or lutes, or just relax, while their animals graze in lush, green fields. Arcadia was an area in ancient Greece where Pan, the god of herds, lived, so an “Arcadia” in art is a pastoral located in ancient Greece. In “Et in Arcadia Ego”, we see three male shepherds and one female figure. The males crowd around a large stone object that just sits on a rise in the middle of this landscape. It is engraved with the work’s title, which translates to: “I am also in Arcadia.” They think about this when a woman appears. She is not with the men because her clothes and body language are different, and the men seem to defer to her. Usually artists will use attributes to identify their figures so audiences don’t have to guess. Poussin has left her identification ambiguous. Many scholars I’ve read believe she is a goddess. The woman is tall and statuesque. One hand is on her hip while she gently rest the other on the back of the red shepherd. No emotion shows on her face. If she is a goddess then Poussin is adhering to the Classical trait of aloofness in the gods. She seems to listen patiently to their questions about the object and its meaning. The color palette is subdued here except in the cloaks of the three central figures. This immediately draws our attention to them. Each figure wears one of the primary colors for further emphasis. Of these three, I think the two on the right, dressed in red and yellow, are the most important. The two most vivid colors right next to each other radiate in the neutral browns and tans surrounding them. These figures are opposites: male and female, body and spirit, confusion and confidence, bent over and standing straight, ignorance and knowledge, emotion and rationality. I think Poussin might be acknowledging the two sides of human existence, but is placing importance on rationality and knowledge and saying that they are found in the Divine. The goddess is almost mirrored by the young man in tan on the very left. Unlike his friends, he doesn’t examine the inscription closely. Instead it seems as though he realizes its implication, accepts its truth, and is saddened by it. His world isn’t what he thought it was. I think the drab color in his outfit may be a reflection of his mood. I also like that, while he is standing while his friend crouch, he is still not as straight or tall as the goddess. This emphasizes her authority and importance further. The painting is laid out like a scene in a play. Everything is centered and right up front. The gestures are clear and the figures are very well-defined. The landscape is like a painted backdrop in a play. It establishes that Arcadia is truly paradise—beautiful, with green fields and picturesque mountains that stretch as far as the eye can see. But in the center of it all, mounted on a rise for all to see, is the object and its inscription. Its meaning cannot be ignored.

Perhaps, but he had the ear of the king, and his style would be THE accepted style for the French Royal Academy. The French Academy essentially set the bar for art for the next 200 years. Including the American ones even after the Revolution.

It's why I'm even more irritated by modern art, where the meanings are not at all hidden, but simply unattainable by looking at some schmear on a wall. All meaning is projected onto the piece by the viewer, while the "artist" mocks the attempts at discerning what the hell he was thinking. And there's not even any skill displayed in the art in the first place.

For Western art of the time, anything classical might be Greek in origin but will be filtered through Rome. The gods will all have the Roman names, for example. But I think it's probably OK to think of classical imagery in art as Greco-Roman, rather than strictly Greek or strictly Roman.

Typically they follow pretty broadly employed rules though. Having a goddess(if that is what is intended) without any of her symbols(as far I can tell) is practically a party foul.

She was the goddess of mysteries of Arcadian cults who was worshipped under the title Despoina ("the mistress"), alongside her mother Demeter, one of the central figures of the Eleusinian Mysteries.

But exact historical accuracy was, I suppose, irrelevant to Poussin's purpose, like a modern moviemaker using a U.S. tank dressed in German colors and markings in a WWII film.

I mean, it's art, so that's good. But Poussin does "generic tree" so much that it's a trope with him. Check out his trees. They aren't really all that happy. You can't tell species or even genus. This one we have: OK, deciduous dicot. yay Poussy-boy.
Also, the painting could be improved by a cabin. Cabins are always nice.

One of the features that gives away the meaning is the small shrub, cast in shadow, at the right of the picture. Death blights every hope, even of the young. The other is, of course, the unusual growth pattern of the tree directly behind the stone structure. There are no large branches on it until it gets to abut head height, and then it demonstrates a dense brush of shrt heavily leafed branches, quite different from the long, clean-limbed boles of its confreres just behind. It's almost as though it has be pollarded, but in Arcadia, that would be unusual. Likely, it has been struck by a falling limb from its neighbors and injured. Even a brush with death radically alters life.

The woman is more ambiguous. There are no attributes to identify her, so she could be anyone that fits the setting or meaning. I think she is Clio, the Muse of History. She represents the memory and lessons of time. These shepherds are learning of something that happened long ago in the past. So long a go that it seems to have been forgotten. Clio is that memory, and she appears to people who are curious to learn about the past.
She is reminding them of a tragedy from history and warning them that an idyllic existence can end.
That's my take.

I wonder if the goddess could be Athena, encouraging these bucolic figures to relearn wisdom that was lost to their society long before the shepherds were born into it. The action of the figure in blue, trying to understand the markings on the stone, is the same as the blue in the skirt of the goddess. A coincidence or a connection?
I've heard of Nicolas Poussin but haven't paid attention to his art. Now to study more of them for his approach and use of color.

Second, it's morbid and thoughtful. That "stone object" is totally a gravestone. The sawn off stump of a mighty tree gives it away. The verdant landscape, rich colors and young, strong, clueless men are the juxtaposition. The inscription/title drive home the message that death stalks us all, even in the best and happiest of worlds. Not a bit of subtlety in this one.

It's probably fine if it's been refrigerated, especially if it's still sealed. Open it up. Is it slimy, weak or wilted? If so, you may have waited too long. If not, you're probably good.

Personally I don't think it's worth it, and I'll eat pretty much anything way after the date passes. I know more than a few people who have gotten sick after eating old bagged salad.

A miracle of science VM. God gives doctors more and more technology to work with, and I hope the Dems don't fuck it up. PT had me walking with a walker about 30 minutes after i woke up. I was wobbly but hey. Left the surg. Center 30 min. After that. Little to zero pain, small incision, and now walking confidently with walker. Expect to ditch that by Monday for follow up. i had 2 knees done at once. this is nothing. Thank you for checking on me.

Have a buddy that had to have a hip replacement in his 40s (skateboarder from the 70s) and once it was done and he was getting around 2-3 months later they called him in to tell the 'appliance' had been recalled and would have to be replaced.
He cried...until they mentioned he would not have to pay a dime, would get full PT AND $100,000.
Glad to report he is fine and has a much nicer house and keeps his surfing to the oceans.

I'm no expert, but I would just suggest finding a way to keep the names straight. Tolstoy can refer to the same character a few different ways (from nick names to formal titles to Christian names) all in the same paragraph.

I think it's a Russian thing. When reading Solzhenitsyn, it took me several pages to figure out that the characters have several different names: a first name, a formal family name, and a name based on their father's that was used informally. And then the nick-names popped in every so often.

But a bigger thought about War and Peace:
It's amazing at how simply entertaining the book is. It's full of high emotions, battles, balls, infidelities, and such. It's got this big reputation as unreadable because of its reputation and size, and I don't think it fits. The book is a task because of its size, but it's fun at the same time.

Excellent DM. Coulda had my knees replaced in my 40's. I was bow legged, played tennis, martial arts, blah blah so wore them out. But then the knees didn't last very long and replacement was guaranteed. Luckily I was an Ortho-surgical rep and had custom knee braces made for athletes and used them to play sports and forestall the replacement so had them done 6 years ago,. I asked if they had had any recalls on the hardware he was using. Nope.

What I find amusing about Anna Karenina is that many women read it in college (including my wife who recommended it to me). Occasionally the subject comes up when discussing books (not something I often do but this one was a fav), I like to point out that Tolstoy was on record as saying he conceived of Anna as a fallen woman not, as was becoming the thing with the rise of communism, as a heroine. Some women who read it in college want to argue with me about it, but I'm always impressed by the women who did not know this and I get to see the lights come on. Many felt the exact same way as Tolstoy but were intimidated by their teachers to believe that they were wrong.

Okay, so I have a probably stupid question. The Big Guy never talked talked to his EU Ambassador about a quid-pro-quo. In fact, he explicitly *denied* and desire in that regard.
But then, based on the rumor chamber that is DC and diplomatic core, Sondland came to believe not what he was directly told by his boss but instead what he was told by others his boss purportedly said to him.
That is weak-minded and weak-spined. No one like that should be an Ambassador to anything.
