Posted by: redridinghood at November 18, 2019 09:44 AM (wiXsO)

58 I'm sure this was a treasured painting for the family, or at least the mother. And it is effective. The background, even the woman's hair, is muted but that permits the faces and child's body to take center stage. The little boy and part of his mother form an oval within the background, so it would be a frame within a frame. The skin tones are delicate and the folds of the clothing are soft as this is a soft moment. Everything is apporpriate to the gentle mood being shown.

What makes the portrait stand out is the way Romney has the boy staring out at the viewer, making a strong direct connection.

131 it's interesting. the depiction of love and tenderness toward a child is a rather new phenomenon in 18th century art.. you don't find it in earlier periods of art, where children are depicted as little adults. it develops in england in the 19th century with the sentimentalizing of childhood, to a saccharine degree. but it begins here.

https://preview.tinyurl.com/yxoenz55

It is a one of a kind exhibit of Homer's paintings and drawings during his time in New England (1869-1880), including mostly his Gloucester and Manchester works (but also some Greenwich and Maine ones as well to depict how he experimented and grew as an artist during this time of his career). It includes a lot of paintings from private collections that are only being shown in this exhibit, and then they go home after December 1st (the exhibit is not going anywhere else). The watercolors from his 3 months living on Ten Pound Island in Gloucester Harbor are excellent (he was finishing 1 watercolor per day).

196 A positive image of a mother and child is extremely rare in art before the Christian era. When they did appear, it was to portray weakness. The Madonna and Child changed that. Around the Enlightenment era, artists adapted the symbolism of the Madonna and Child into secular settings. Mary's purity and innocence became the purity and innocence of Motherhood in general. I see a lot of Medieval and Renaissance Madonnas in this. In a lot of those, Mary is contemplative and sad, while Jesus stares out at the viewer and engages us. Even her heart pendent recalls images of the Sacred Heart.

212 Interesting bit of Kabuki theater going on in Israel this morning/last night. If you look at the headlines, it says "Hamas shoots 2 missiles into Israel! Israel retaliates against Hamas!" and you are bound to think "oh wow here goes war again."

And yet - you look deeper, and find out that the 2 missiles didn't hit anything, and that in terms of "casualties", 5 people were being treated for "anxiety attacks", that's all. You kiddin' me? Meanwhile on the counter strike, there were no casualties either, which tells me that Israel called up Hamas and told them what was coming so they could get everything out of the way while they dropped bombs on a couple dirt parking lots.

There's a lot of games being played over there right now.

My provisional theory, based on observation, is that Israel has forged a working understanding with some of the leaders of Hamas, who want to stay alive and in power, and they are surreptitiously working together to remove all of Islamic Jihad, and the remaining hard core Hamas radicals, from Gaza. It's in both groups interest to do this, and it's in both groups interest to pretend that they're still fighting each other bitterly. It's not far fetched - Israel, Saudi, and Egypt are all full time military allies now against Iranian influence, even though none of them will admit that openly to their populations.

However, unless you've personally experienced motherhood AND you're fairly functional, you have no way of understanding the complete dedication and sacrifice a mother is willing to endure for her children (again, if she's not already a damaged nut). I also think that it is largely chemical, not a romantic virtue because if it were just a learned characteristic vs a primal impulse there would be a lot more abandoned children.

Re: Mary

The dead guy ascends to heaven and the angels surround him and sing. What was REALLY great - and the kids loved - is that Mary and the trumpets were placed on the edges of the loge seating (middle balcony) so that they were projecting their voices down to the stage when they sing for her and she responds.

It really was magnificent.

Pretty much. Though I am sure that this was a stipulation of his settlement.

Otherwise, the League would have let him be forgotten. Which he was well on the way to being.

Posted by: sniffybigtoe at November 18, 2019 10:54 AM (xfb67)

I don't think being Unemployed is really having the upper hand. If I read the story right, it looks like he decided at the last minute not to do it at the Falcons training facility, where the team representatives had gathered to watch him work out, but instead he decided to be at some high school field 30 miles away. And he gave the team reps 30 minutes notice as to where they could go if they wanted to see him. I gather that just about all of them drove straight to the Atlanta airport and left.

He ain't all that, but I suppose you can't convince him of that since he's a Prog. They're all from Lake Woebegon, it would appear.

Nothing as far as the eye can see. We came across 3-4 cars of an old derailed freight train laying on its side along the railroad tracks. Looks like it was there long enough to have arrows sticking out of it. It was quiet, so quiet it almost hurt your ears. We all stood there silent looking into this gigantic expanse of nothing, but beautiful in the untouched by man aspect of it ( besides the train cars). Then one of the women in the group spoke up and broke the silence with "maybe we should turn back". We looked at each other and nodded. lol

442 My parents performed the correct rituals - work hard, knew their place,
stayed loyal to the company - and the rain never came. They never
questioned those virtues until it was too late - and became bitter
because of it.

Those rituals worked well and built the greatest country the world has ever known. So naturally our enemies, instead of emulating our success for themselves, sought to destroy it and us.

Sorta like what the ChiComs are going to do to Hong Kong.

There's no doubt, the rituals did not work for my parents and I wouldn't dream of emulating them. Hard work as it's own reward ? No thanks - I work hard when it pays well either now or down the line. Hard work, performed blindly, rarely pays the worker. Stay loyal to the company ? No way, the company has never been loyal to me. Know my place ? I'll establish my own place, not stay in one picked for me. And so on and so forth.

Yep. School starts at 3 years old for many kids in NC, too. Because school is just daycare and is being recognized as such.

Compare that to reading before saying prayers at bedtime through the week, doing something fun after chores on Saturday and then church and board games on Sunday.

It's a long game, and they're going to win.

Whatever it is, they'll never stop. As I predicted when Mueller imploded, it changes nothing - that House Dems or SDNY, probably both, would just ruck over, pick up the ball and keep running the plays.

When impeachment wraps up they'll be on to the next thing, or they'll circle back and do it again.

This will never end. It's a fact of life, now.

Not an uncommon event. How many of us heard all those things growing up? Work hard, go to school for however long, get those degrees, don't make crazy choices, and in the end...but how many of us never found any cheese in the maze? How much of that was true, or believed true, and how much was just to keep the cattle moving with the herd? At what point was "received wisdom" simply concocted to control behavior for the benefit of a few? At this stage I'm not sure many here would dispute that's exactly what's been happening for most, if not all, of our lives.

The simple, harsh truth is that none of that guarantees rewards for you, but it damn sure rewards the people who benefit from you making those choices. And that's why we get told that. No other reason anymore.

Probably. If they didn't clean it up in the first 72 hours, odds are there was nothing left but scrap.

Actually, there is real good money to be made in cleaning up after those types of spills/crashes.

Friend of mine made about 10k one summer just retrieving the bags form a couple cars filled with mulch that went into a local river.

Spent every day for 2-3 weeks snorkeling and making insane money all day.

None of this is new. Look back through time, and you can see that most of our ancestors were far more rebellious than most anyone today is. We put up with shit that would have had them marching armed militias around. 200 years ago, anything like that Google complex would have been burned to the ground long ago.

But we value entertainment and ease of living too much to do anything that might disrupt that.

Posted by: Tom Servo at November 18, 2019 11:32 AM (Kpl3J)

538 They worked for 1 or 2 generations at most, while
the American economy was expanding wildly. Before that most everyone
was farmers or small shopkeepers, and working at "a job" for a
corporation was very rare. Jobs were more like working at the livery
stable for old man Jones, or cutting brush for the farmer down the way.
Posted by: Tom Servo at November 18, 2019 11:25 AM (Kpl3J)

Very possibly. As good an explanation as any, and better than most.

But see what I'm saying ? That stuff was poured down my parents throats, by their parents who got it force-fed as well, and nobody ever stopped to question why. It was all just performing the ritual and hoping the rain came, because it always had before. And also, questioning the Alpha wasn't allowed.

I dislike this younger generation - but blindly performing rituals isn't the main reason why. Most people ritual their asses off. A lot of the great arguments are over nothing more than which ritual brings the rain, or who performs it better.

Posted by: Lurking Libertarian at November 18, 2019 11:33 AM (bWRHr)

539 Those rituals were certainly taught to my parents by their parents,
because they worked for so long. But that's what I'm asking. When did
those rituals break down, and why ?

IMHO, they were destroyed on purpose back in the '60's by our friends, the Communists. One of their operatives (or it could've been the FBI or CIA, it's tough to tell all the bad actors apart without a program) killed Kennedy, which set up a very large national shock to the emotional system. That shock opened the door to acceptance of anything that would relieve the pain of that horrific incident.

Viola! Enter the Counterculture, replete with all manner of rebellion and feel-goodnessismness. Let it all hang out, express yourself and give The Man the finger in every way possible. Hippies, dykes and fairies were all the rage and so were the their drugs. Most never awakened from their brainwashing and are now in power, furthering their puppetmaster's satanic plans to destroy all the good things.

All the things we see today, all the good things that made America the envy of the rest of the world (like the nuclear, God-fearing Christian family and everything that emanated from it, like charities) had to be destroyed.

They did a pretty good job. Try to defend the traditional family and watch what happens. Hell, just try to defend traditional masculinity or even say that a wife should cooperate with her husband.

#WASTF and it was done to us on purpose. The people who could've stopped it didn't do it.

540 400 I rode into Montana one year when we were in S Dakota for the sturgis rally. There were maybe 7 or 8 of us. We were on the road for probably 20-30 miles after we crossed into Montana.

We used to laugh til we cried every 5 years or so, when the NYT would send an expedition to the wilds of Nebraska and worry about the buffalo stampedes and wild Indians. Sometimes the residents of the local reservations would send a delegation to make noises all night.
Silly city folk.
Of course, the first trip I took to Delaware, I was very surprisingly disappointed by the lack of tricorner hats, muskets, and minutemen, so maybe travel is broadening.

545 This is a lovely portrait, so tender and genuine. Yes, little boys of preschool age wore dresses in this era. They were plainer than girls' dresses, though. When the child was around 5 or 6 he would be "breeched," that is, he would start to wear pants. Parents will recognize this as an age at which potty-training accidents are very rare. Note that Pull-Ups or even plastic pants were far in the future!
