The Occasional Fishing, Hunting, Rugged Outdoors Thread, Prometheus Edition [Bandersnatch]

1116-01.jpg

No, not that Prometheus, that’s the obsession of another deranged and deluded occasional Saturday evening host who is deranged and delusional. I’m talking about fire. We’re going to sit around this campfire and talk about campfires. And fishing and hunting and camping and such.
Welcome Piscators and Piscatrixes, Nimrods and Nimrettes, and pyromaniacs of all genders to the current installment of the occasional fishing and hunting and other wholesome outdoorsness thread.

This started a few weeks ago when I was having beers with a guy at a place that had comfy benches and a fire pit out back. The proprietor was just throwing lumber in the pit and dousing it with lighter fluid – which is morally and aesthetically wrong – but it was a fire on a Fall afternoon and fires are conducive to talking. So we talked about fires and their proper construction and maintenance. “How many pieces of newspaper do you use for tinder?”. “Well, assuming we’re using matches you are one-match-only, right?”. “One match? One point of ignition”. So I had met a fellow fanatic and we agreed that something as important as fire was worth arguing about and maybe even a post.

Staring into a fire is an ancient human experience. I can’t help but think that the feelings and conversations evoked by a campfire are the same as they’ve always been. A young fire dances and licks. The mature fire roars in the night. The end of the night fire settles in to coals and glowing and quiet rumination. You stare at a fire and you think. If there are other people around the fire you might talk. The conversation will be different from that at a clean well-lighted place.

Beowulf, I’m certain, was recited around camp fires.

Now, it’s possible for a passion to become self-destructive, especially in the hands of a gifted self-destructor. I was on my way to a camping trip with a girlfriend. This was an extraordinarily attractive woman with a deep hold on my psyche, and she’s also a Girl Scout den mother and camping afficionado. She got to the campsite first and texted me pictures of a gin and tonic, an exposed breast, and the fire she had built, all waiting for me. This is a near perfect set of expectations. And when I got there I was so fussy and controlling about poking the fire that she nearly broke up with me right then. I’m an idiot.

1116-02.jpg

I would like a ruling on this. Is this cheating? Fire is made in three stages: tinder, kindling, and fuel. You can’t light fuel (the log) directly, each stage has a low ignition point and burns up to a higher temperature. There are chemical log products which can be lit with a match, but these are haram. It is known. This fatwood claims to be all natural, it is just pine kindling with a ridiculous amount of sap in it so that it will match light. I think I’ll start keeping some in the truck and in a backpack for emergencies, but it still seems somehow wrong.

I’m heating my lair entirely with wood this season and I’m enjoying the ritual of coming home and making the fire first, before I log on and see what you yobbos are up to.

1116-03.jpg

The other kind of fire at camp is the controlled cooking fire. I used to use propane cylinders and a Coleman stove, but I was introduced to the white gas Whisperlite stoves by the Mad Croatian. I learned much from him, like always put the overhead tarp up first and the importance of the J-stroke, but the Whisperlite might be the best. There was a thread here years ago where some people were saying that there were better options. I don’t remember what they were supposed to be and I hope everyone who said so has been banned.

1116-04.jpg

This is still a fishing thread. That is a brown trout (salmo trutta) and a rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss).

I have asked for camp fire pictures and the only related entry was a camping picture from the estimable Nurse Ratched. That means she’s better than you.

1116-05.jpg

It’s my boys, my Goddaughter, her parents and another friend. We’ve camped together since the adults were in high school. We first took the kids backpacking when they were babes and had to be carried. Deception Pass is one of our favorite car camping spots. On that particular trip, it was springtime and we saw three or four whales swimming by. It was amazing.

This comes from a lurker named JJ (not our JJ with the Godfather quotes).

1116-06.jpg

Long time lurker, just wanted to share a picture of my son(age 14) with his first deer. Looking forward to this season. I have never commented on the site but try to check at least couple times a day. Loved the pic of the young lady with her deer and wanted to share my son's progression.

Now, this has to be the most shameful non-submission in fish thread history. It’s from fluffy.

1116-07.jpg

One of our infamous members (Soothsayer) announced that he had never seen a porcupine in the flesh. I would like the offer some photos and narrative to share with the Horde on the fishing/outdoors thread.

If you are interested, I can write up the occasion when I was nearly trampled by a stampede of love crazed male porkies.

That is not a picture of a love crazed porcupine trampling fluffy. It’s a picture I took of a porcupine because it was so interesting to see one that was not splatterated on a roadside. I’m using it here because despite a couple of messages back and forth, fluffy did not write up this encounter. Shame on you, fluffy!

And with that we move on to the raison d’etre of this here HQ, the comments section. Brickbats, praise, and fish brag pics are welcome at aoshqfish at sign gmail thing.

This was always going to be a tough one for Trump to stick his nose into -

Fighters don't win them all. Trump is showing the rest of the country, and the whiny Repubs what must be done, even if you don't win.

GOPe would never have tried, and then spent overtime with multiple excuses.

That is the difference I have seen in the last 3 years.

2.5 hour drive north of Chicago is a great Wisconsin campground - Koehler-Andre State Park..
The campsites are under old pines and the ground is strewn with pine needles that are like a soft mattress to sleep on. Many fun times there. Acoustic guitar drew many other campers to our campfire with tales from around the country and around the world! And some really good jams!

51 I remember hiking in Estes Park, Co., and coming upon a porcupine in the middle of the trail. He wasn't scared of us; clearly he knew that he didn't need to be. He stood his ground, just turned his back to us and made some snarly noises. We wanted some porcupine quills so one of us took a stick and reached out to towards him - now that was a surprise! Never realized that tail would be so muscular (once you learn about it, it's obvious) and with his tail that porky slapped the stick right out of his hand. After that none of us fooled with him any more, if he wanted to own that spot on the trail, well then he damn well owned it.

He's a good fire starter and managed a fire every night the last trip, even when it was damp, with nothing but a small bic lighter. We use MSR pocket rocket camp stoves and the fuel that goes with.
The one thing I hate about tent camping is the condensation that builds up inside when it's cold outside.

A few times in my life I have actually attained one-match satori, it's a great feeling, but I am foremost an engineer about it, not a purist ... if I want a fire I am gonna get one, whatever it takes.

77 CAMPFIRE S'MORES DIP ... Line the bottom of an aluminum pie pan with Reese's peanut butter cups (the mini version, wide sides down). Add a layer of mini marshmallows. Gently heat the pan over embers (not flames) until warmed through and gooey. Scoop out with baked graham cracker sticks (Honey Maid Dippers or Scooby Doo sticks). Enjoy!

78 When I was in the Boy Scouts we spent lots of time making fires, fire pits, and fire starters.

Cotton balls with vaseline, egg containers covered in paraffin, were good home made options.

The magnesium fire starters such as BlastMatch and Fire Steel are nice, but you had better understand that they are not going to light the logs on fire.

79 But the fact of it has made me paranoid about being trapped without fire so I have the ability to make fire and boil water everywhere I go.

Smart morons know to use a mixture of 3/4 diesel fuel and 1/4 gasoline, which will gently ignite the bonfire, even if the woodpile is covered with 10" of snow.

I hear ya.
Happened a few times on the Interstates in Northern Indiana a few times, too - one time I just barely got through ahead of the blockage.
Ever since then I keep an array of winter survival stuff in the cars; just loaded them up a week or so ago.
Blanket, candles, cans of corned beef hash and similar food, an improvised cook set made from tin cans and coathanger wire to melt snow, axe, sand, shovel, and a half pint of cheap whiskey hidden somewhere. And like you, matches, lighters, and one of those magnesium things.
Up here it's more the idea of getting stuck on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere for a day or two before the plow gets there, but same thing really.

My Grannys cooked on woodstoves and heated the house with a potbellied stove, which you could cook on as well. When the potbellied stove and woodstoves were bought, the old fireplaces were bricked up except for the hole to pass the stovepipe through. Those old houses smelled so good and were so comfortable in the winter. Of course the bedrooms had no heat and we were covered with a half dozen quilts. I still have the quilt that was on my Eromero Granny's bed when she died (at age 26).

Posted by: Chouinard
------

Had an interesting experience doing that. It was at Acadia Nat. Park. The normal method was to nurse a few twigs, add kindling, etc.

This time, it was late, dark, and cool. So, gasoline, normally reserved for the stove. Splashed maybe 1/2 pint on, lit a match, dropped it on. Now, what happened next has been the stuff of many campfire recollections since.

My best guess is that evaporation produced cold vapors, which spread down and radially out from the wood stack. At any rate, three or four of us were standing around the campfire site when the match was dropped.

The result was a stunning, uniform, eyeblink-fast ring of ground-level blue flame that expanded beyond where we were standing. It was over before it could even be registered. Much less than a second.

Mighty were the exclamations.

162 Didn't realize that about gasoline, that's a good warning story.

When used to go skating, we'd light a fire in the middle of the pond with wood and diesel fuel. The diesel would feed the fire on the wood. Flames never traveled along the diesel fuel. Kind of neat.

163 Jumping in here late as usual.
Here in the west, campfires are forbidden mostly except in organized, official campgrounds with fire rings or such in place. The wildfire danger can be huge and, wood can be scarce in the high country. My go to stove has always been a Svea 123. No longer made. Solid brass, white gas, indestructable and reliable. The single noisiest stove ever made. You don't notice that until you shut it off. It does need priming which frightens some folk.

As for fire starting material, dryer lint. Light, keep in a ziplock bag and it'll go up like dry newsprint.

I can attest to nurse rached's pic of Deception Pass being a great place, both the state park, and passing through Deception Pass via a fast boat, a slow boat, or a sailboat.

It is a deep, narrow pass with high volcanic rock on each side. A huge amount of water goes through it every tide change. An old bridge soars nearly 200 feet over the pass, taking the driver from Fidalgo Island (seems like the mainland, but it is an island) to the north side of Whidbey Island, home of Whidbey AFB, and their electronic jamming A-6's. The eddys can be like giant bathtubs swirling down to what seems a watery hell. With a fast boat, you dive and pitch, and bounce from side to side. Smart skippers go around the eddys. Just never, ever get off the plane.

Slow boats and sailboats? Where is the tide chart? Only on a tide change will you get through. And get hopping, the window of calm water is only about a half hour. I have seen sailboats get caught in an eddy and just spin endlessly. It is crazy. Never fool with Mother Nature.

Deception Pass is easy to reach, about 2 hours north by freeway and highway. And landwise, the park is big, the north end of Whidbey, with many campspots. And that view of the Straits and the San Juan Islands is sweet.

There are maps online for carrier coverage in various locations, so you can choose one that has good coverage in your area. Also, if you are switching, look for serious discounts/promotions. Carriers will spend to get people to switch to paying them every month instead of someone else.

What's an irresponsible forest? Is that where the naughty trees go when they've been expelled from the regular forest? Like it's the back of the parking lot for the regular forest?

I bet they go out there and get drunk, and fall over on another. And smoke, and start fires. And pollinate without protection, spreading mistletoe and beetles around.

My wife forced me to get a new phone. I was going to get a Galaxy 7 but in the process of forcing me to get a new phone she also tricked me into getting a Galaxy Note 10+.

It is kind of big but I am getting use to that. It does lots of cool things, most of which I will never use. However, it is crazy fast and has twice as much ram as the computer I use for this.

I got it from ATT. They were going to charge me the something around 900 or 1000 but I got it for something around 600 or 700 for the good customer something or other.

Would not have replaced the old phone except the sime card would come out every so often and it was old enough that software updates were not being extended to that model .

If you take a few drinking straws cut into 1 or 2 inch lengths and seal one end by grabbing it with needlenose pliers and running a match over the plastic, then stuff it with lint/paraffin and seal the other end, you have a very easy way to carry doubly waterproof tinder. Just cut off the ends and push out with a stick or match.

I did that once, cleaning duct-tape residue off cables with toluene or xylene ... paused, took a swig of my coffee, lit a cig and dropped the match on the floor ... and just as you described, a blue expanding ring for a second or two.

I still have mine but haven't backpacked for years.

231 Stumbled on a "camp stove" site once and was impressed with the little alcohol pop can stoves anyone can make. Definite MacGyver stuff. But be careful with the potentetial explosiveness with those cheap creations.
Posted by: Rex B at November 16, 2019 10:04 PM (bzIRf)

The cool thing about those is that they use denatured alcohol, which is cheap, available anywhere, and not very dangerous to store or use. The downside is it takes a relatively long time to boil a cup of water. They're a homemade featherweight version of the Swedish Trangia brass stove.

Deception pass is the shortcut to the San Juans if you're a sailboat. Otherwise, the trip on the eastside of Whibey Island can be really gnarly and puts you too close to the shipping lanes for my comfort. The Straits can be really dicey.

I miss my little boat.

I may buy a sailboat to live on when I have to move from my present situation. Talk about getting rid of a lifetime of stuff.....

McClellanville to Liberty, and North Augusta to South Of The Border.
From Clemson to Voorhees, and Antreville to Hellhole Swamp. I been

You have my friend! I lived for awhile in Mt Pleasant - but that's city living from where you've wandered. I like that you've gone from the lowlands to up into the mountains (people don't know how beautiful it is up by Clemson, they think of S.C as beaches and islands).

S.C is a beautiful state - and Columbia and USC are gorgeous - I couldn't convince my daughter to go there - she wanted a Northeast liberal arts school - she missed out!

248 I say fatwood is fair play in starting a fire - people before electricity had the ability to make fatwood for that purpose, by soaking kindling in spare animal grease. If you're in a really wet area where the wood is damp, you really need something like that.
Posted by: Tom Servo at November 16, 2019 09:27 PM (V2Yro)

If you are camping in an area that has white birch trees, the kind you can peel the bark off easily, those birch bark peelings take light easily, and burn like crazy, since the bark is full of resin. Even wet, it will burn.

And dead lower limbs of conifer trees makes good kindling. Usually quite dry, even in a rain storm.

Yes, birch bark is the best if you can find it.

Unfortunately birch only grows in pure northern climes and our sorry southern brethren know nothing of the birch.

251 You know, I would like it if someone would make an easy way to boil water using your car outlets. Not for boiling water while driving but in the event that you were stuck somewhere and wanted some hot water.
Posted by: not so at November 16, 2019 09:31 PM (HALdu)

They make 12 volt car coffeemakers, but they are slow. The lighter outlet typically has a 20 amp fuse, so you only have 240 watts of power available.

253 203 LCD,
Back when I was married, my ex and I took our 25 ft Catalina sailboat through Deception Pass with our babies on board. We went with the 7.5 knot current and were totally out of control. No sails up, of course. We went under the bridge sideways with the powerboats giving us a LOT of leeway.

Had a big snort of rum after we got through safely.

Whoot!
Posted by: Nurse ratched at November 16, 2019 09:57 PM (PkVlr)

A 25 Catalina? That is like the Volkswagen Bug of Puget Sound sailing. Simple, solid, relatively cheap, basic, well-designed hull that can take nearly any water a human being should be caught in. There are a whole lot of them. A great way to learn how to sail.

I knew a guy who long ago had one and got moorage on Lake Union, under the Aurora bridge, and lived in it for a year. He got more 'tang than any time of his life, with the line "want to go back to my sailboat and have another drink?" It was 10 minutes or less from most any bar in downtown Seattle, or the Ballard or Fremont neighborhoods, where a lot of bars are congregated.

Yeah, it was a 25 Catalina, but by the time they arrived in the wee hours of the morning, somehow it didn't matter much.

I've been over Deception Pass many times but no way would I take a boat through there. I'm way to chicken besides, don't swim. Not that it would matter much there.

With a fast powerboat at least 27' or so, it is a lot of fun.

Still, the skipper has to pay attention every second.

256 I believe that the Corvair had an optional gasoline-fired heater.
Posted by: Rae Dawn Chong at November 16, 2019 10:00 PM (CDGwz)

As did air-cooled VW's. Some had Hupp Perfection gas heaters, made in USA. Most had a Bosch contrivance that worked well when new, but which used a catalytic glow plug that became poisoned by the lead in gasoline, and would no longer light the fuel, despite glowing bravely. Now that unleaded fuel is the norm, they will probably work fine again. I have one in the parts bin.

And Southwind fuel-burning heaters used to be a common accessory for cars from the '30's to the '50's.

257 Late to the thread, dammit.

When I first moved to Virginia a friend and his wife took me up to Skyline Drive to see the Valley and other views. (He was later Best Man at my wedding.) It was a brilliant sunny day but there was a 'brisk' cutting wind that seemed to be coming off the polar ice cap. They broke out a little camp stove, it may have been a Svea of some type, and heated water for tea. That cup of Russian Caravan tea was the best cuppa I ever had. Warmed the hands and the inner man. We talked of the history of the area while the stove roared and enjoyed the quiet and tea when the stove was shut down. It was a lovely time that is still sharp in my memory after almost 40 years.

258 And while I realize this is not the movie thread, my wife is watching a documentary on Clive Davis and Arista records. The parts I've been watching have been very interesting. So, if you have any interest in the music industry, it's on Netflix, and worth a watch.
Posted by: No One of Consequence at November 16, 2019 09:40 PM (CAJOC)

During the days of the robber baron fossils running the labels, Clive was pretty fucking brilliant. The Columbia dumbasses let him go and he promptly turned Arista into a major force.

263 Fire is obviously an important outdoor skill, but what is probably an even harder thing to master is getting by without it.

Some people just can't make get their brains into a shape that contains both "being outdoors" and "not setting things on fire and/or smoking the crap out of themselves". Makes certain types of traveling and activities really difficult, especially if you're trying to keep a low profile during or after.
