-- Worse still, how many of us realized that it works AGAINST you? We've recently learned that the act of saving for college disqualifies your kids from the sweet, sweet financial aid packages. Or the young couple I know who saved up for years for a down payment on a home purchase around 2008, and who realized the people who had overextended themselves were saved from their financial choices during the last (ahem) "crisis" and didn't learn anything except someone else will help them when they overextend themselves next time.

Posted by: BignJames at November 18, 2019 11:43 AM (X/Pw5) That is a hilarious movie, one of my favorites in that schlock/horror genre! Because it is much more comedy than terror (Compare to A Comedy of Terrors, with the same cast + Basil Rathbone) You can tell in every scene that Karloff and Price are hamming it up and having a great time playing off each other, and both of them are rolling their eyes at Peter Lorre, who wasn't just acting drunk, he truly was drunk out of his gourd on the set. (it shows) Another amusing bit - Jack Nicholson is playing Peter Lorre's son, but they fight constantly and bitterly - apparently that was real as well, as Peter Lorre and Jack Nicholson detested each other right from the start. And in each scene Vincent Price looks at all of this going on and just smirks. Posted by: Tom Servo at November 18, 2019 11:50 AM (Kpl3J) 151

Just hours before his death, he sent the Pentagon a cable describing 'expanding Islamist influence in Dema,' a town east of Benghazi, and said he was seeing a 'troubling increase in violence and Islamist influence.' ..." daily mail link, article on Stevens having pleaded for added security. https://tinyurl.com/t8ca92g and a detail I forgot ... they actually removed his security team 6 weeks earlier ... Stevens had requested they stay through September. WH "On Aug. 2, six weeks before Stevens was killed, he requested 'protective detail bodyguard' positions, calling the security situation in Libya 'unpredictable, volatile and violent.' A month earlier, he requested that the State Department extend his tour of duty personnel, which is a 16-man temporary security team trained in combating terrorism. no verse immediately comes to mind, but there is certainly a place for righteous anger (JC turning over the tables of the money changers, who profited from religious rules, their own DeepState in the temple perhaps). Our founders brought freedom to several generations and maybe much of the world over time, because they were willing to go to war against their oppressors. imo, there is a time when the BigSin is to stand down in the face of oppression, and watch as evil takes root in a community. But the welfare state and easy money has made everyone comfortably numb ... especially with the social media and phone addictions, a constant Rave (party) in their pocket. It's funny because the Watergate break-in was all about getting the black book that had John Dean's future wife's name in it. She was a hooker for hotshots in DC, and he sent the burglars in to grab the evidence of that.
And I doubt anyone ever told Nixon that was what the whole thing was about. Posted by: Sharkman at November 18, 2019 12:12 PM (5XZ7Q) 289

The score is awesome. The plot is incomprehensively silly, but who cares? Burton has a lot of fun with his cynically smartassed character, Ingrid Pitt and Mary Ure are nucular hawt, the prop multipurpose dynamite bombs are awesome, and the on-screen body count was one of the biggest in film history, until The Wild Bunch knocked it off the throne a year later.

Posted by: Anna Puma at November 18, 2019 * * It's amazing how, despite the Hays Code censoring so much in studio-era Hollywood, Lorre manages to suggest that his Joel Cairo is gay without ever going over the top. A kid could watch the movie and be annoyed by him the way Sam Spade is. An adult would say, "He's queerer than a four-dollar bill." Hammett never stated it outright, he couldn't, but Cairo, Gutman, and Gutman's gunman Wilmer are all apparently gay, or leaning that way. Spade calls Wilmer a "gunsel," which most readers probably took as a new word for gunman, but it means something like "kept boy." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at November 18, 2019 12:26 PM (Ejm1K) 364

Top 4 right now: 1. The OSU 2. ClempSon 3. Bama 4. Crawdad U I'm tired of all four teams, but my team, the Oregon State BEAVERS, sucks, and will never sniff a championship game (though I still remember 2001's 11 - 1 squad that crushed the Golden Helmets in the Fiesta Bowl), so I guess ClempSon because I like Trevor Lawrence's game and the coach is outwardly Christian. Thanks Tonypete. I have been having a particularly rough day. Because of that, it's easy to wish harm on those I disagree with, and thought they may deserve it, those thoughts harm me. They keep me from growing in my faith. They prevent me from wishing those individuals would receive Christ and repent. Luke 6:27 and Matthew 5:44 are just two of the verses that speak about this.
I don't tolerate evil, I want those who commit crimes to suffer the consequences, justly. But for me, just me, hating is harmful. Your mileage may vary on that. Posted by: Moki at November 18, 2019 12:30 PM (mFoNl) 394

Posted by: Mikey NTH - Warm Yourself with Rages and Roars from the Outrage Outlet! at November 18, 2019 12:27 PM (hLRSq) The lawyers for the House submitted that as a reason that they need to be able to see the Grand Jury testimony that Mueller received, so they could investigate if it happened. But they neglect to point out - Mueller had all of that testimony, and he and his team already compared it to Trump's written answers. If they could have found anything that was even the slightest bit off, they would have shouted about it as loudly as they could. Posted by: Tom Servo at November 18, 2019 12:31 PM (Kpl3J) 398
"Better than Boullion" is just the stuff if making roast beef sandwiches, which isn't really a sandwich, but you know what I mean. Make it a little hotter than the recipe. I think they want 1 Tbsp. Per pint of gravy or something like that. It isn't quite what it once was, I think they cheaped out maybe. Diluted, it doesn't go as far as it used to. It's kind of pricey for what it is, but it is good stuff.
