Good afternoon and welcome to the PG13 almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thank you for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of pets.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

The following story doesn't mean you can break out and get all wound up with politics. President Trump could make animal cruelty a federal crime.

Meet The PetMorons

IMG_0687.jpg

This is Winston. The shelter advertised him as a border collie - slightly plausible at ten weeks but not at two years. We are starting to suspect some Cardigan corgi in there along with who knows what else. Here he is on our favorite hike on the Chattahoochee. Thanks for all you do, Longtime lurker.

Slightly plausible? That's funny. He's a handsome lad and he looks like he just loves the outdoors. We appreciate your submission today.

We had a graduation in the family this week. Say Hi! to our Border
Collie Kit (left) who finished her puppy class this week. She's pictured
here with her BFF, Sochi, an Australian Shepherd.

Kit turns one year-old this week, but we've only had her for about two
months. She came to us because her original family, who love her very
much, got into a difficult situation and just couldn't keep her any
longer. It was supposed to be a temporary foster-home arrangement, but
that lasted about ten minutes. Ya'all know how that works. - Ron

Congrats on the new addition and graduation. Good puppy Kit. You Sochi look like you could be disruptive in class. Excellent photo! Thanks for sharing.

If you have space to use this on a future Saturday I know some readers of the pet thread will probably be horrified at the spartan conditions in which poor Saucer is forced to live. But she's persevered. She's 19.

Thanks,
Corn and Beans

Shocked! Shocked we are at the AoS Pet Thread. My goodness. What a horrible life.

Our new puppy, Torch, is a 13 week old chocolate lab who thinks he is a parrot. He likes to climb up on our shoulders to sit. Should be interesting when he hits 90 pounds or so. -No Good Deed

"I apologize if I got the pets out of order, looks like a happy gang. Since you live in AK do you work any of them with sleds? J/K. Thank you for your emails"

No, none are sled dogs. Our home is at the bottom of a looooong, steep driveway that requires 4WD. During the winter we park at the top of the drive as it is impossible to drive up and down even with studs or tire chains. We sled our groceries and packages down. pull our garbage up with the sled. I did try hitching up the dogs, but they all sat down on the job and looked at me. End of experiment. They see their job as encouraging the sled on its way down the drive. and supervising it way back up the driveway.

Have been a long time lurker and have from afar felt the grief and happiness that the petmorons have shared. Could not live up here without the companionship, laughter, humor, love, and security our pups give us.

Elias was missed out in the photos, and I added his pictures again. He suffers. from the best I can figure out, canine autism. What made his life great was SAR training. It was not until he was 3 y.o that he was able focus on any task, I tried several times to get him interested in SAR as he is highly intelligent and enjoys extreme exercise, but things did not clicked for him until he was three years old. He is one heck of a searchdog... very intelligent, and great stamina, and curious about people. Sorry for being long-winded, but Thank you for your pet threads and the pet morons. - Lr S

Thanks for clarifying the pack for me and the Horde.

Scooter at one year. My wife says his name should be Looking For Trouble.
While not pets we have several herds of wild burros in the area, some of whom drop in for water during the Summer. - Robert

Trouble? I don't see how that could be. He looks perfectly innocent and pure as the wind driven snow. For wild burros they sure line up nicely for photos. Thanks for the photos and stories.

15 I enjoyed the "Cat Scratch Fever" photoshop at the top because of its timing-- just last week the cat rescue group I work with had its annual major fundraiser/dance. The band donates its time for the event, and the guys always play "Alley Cat" and "What's New, Pussycat?" as well as "Cat Scratch Fever." This year's dance was a great success in raising money for our spay/neuter and emergency vet care program, and everyone had a really good time. FWIW, no cats lost their s--t.

Saucer is fully furred-now. But for a couple of early years she constantly licked at her belly and made it bald and sore.
We finally figured out she had a food allergy and once we fixed that and changed her food she's been perfect. Unfortunately, at her age she has entered the slow kidney failure stage.
Every day with her is a blessing.

84 It's a beautiful day here in NoCo. 68 and sunny, the sunlight has that amber hue to it.

I should be out hiking, but, nope. Being 29 and all, I was coughing (getting over a cold), and wrenched my lower back. Nothing serious, but it's stiff and sore.

so, I am forced to sip bourbon, watch MST with my elderly tabby cat, Mischa.

She's heading toward her 21st birthday. She often seems confused, and is vocal as hell, which she never was in her youth. There is such a thing as feline dementia, and I think it explains how she is now. often agitated, confused, and spends most of her time in a few small, familiar locations. But her favorite things are food and my lap.

87 She's heading toward her 21st birthday. She often
seems confused, and is vocal as hell, which she never was in her
youth. There is such a thing as feline dementia, and I think it
explains how she is now. often agitated, confused, and spends most of
her time in a few small, familiar locations. But her favorite things
are food and my lap.

My miniature Scottie had doggy dementia at the end. He bit the mail lady who had been his friend for almost 14 years when she tried to pet him. He would forget where he was and would stand in the middle of the room looking confused until I picked him up.

I used a pet stroller for a long time for the oldest pup after age and a back surgery made it difficult for her to keep up with the younger pups. She loved going on an outing and was quite regal as she watched the lesser dogs walking along. Being left behind would have broken her heart, so it was a great solution!

102 A few mornings ago...

Stumbling in the dim light, something crunches underfoot, where nothing crunchy should be.

At least it wasn't squishy poo or puke. At least I was wearing my houseslippers.

Got a flashlight, took a look... a small and rended bird, guts and feathers all neatly kept on one easily-removed rag rug, but, still, crunchy dead bird.

How did this happen, I wondered. Cats have been in all night and I didn't think there was a bird in the house when we retired.

Got the felines' food ready and went to serve them on the front porch, which was when I discovered... the door was ajar, about one kitty-body width. Apparently, we'd not closed it firmly, and the smart black kitteh knows how to nudge it open.

Glad it wasn't one of those arctic nights. Still, never mind the rended bird, what else could have come in at night!

Which reminds me it's been two years since our dear Defender Doggie departed this world. Hard to believe.

--

Our cats are more the quarreling than the cuddling type, but maybe with age and winter comes some camaraderie. A few days ago, Milady got a picture of all three of them lined up sleeping on the couch! Now, we only need to get the pic from her camera to my computer to the pet thread... #twoweeks

They don't always need to nudge . . . cats can squeeze through small openings because their collarbones are not attached to other bones-- this allows them to get through small spaces.

Well, when they shred them up instead of just leaving them, it means they love you more. They're preparing them for you.

I had a cat named Pantera who did that whenever you left for more than a day, like a cargo cult thing to bring you back. Best cat ever.

But if you left her for say, week, there'd be seven dead animals. One ripped up as you've described. Six stripped down to the spines, and laid out side by side. She'd kill one every day and leave it, and eat it if you didn't come back, and kill a fresh one for you, until they disappeared. That's how she knew you'd returned and "eaten" her offering.

I loved that cat.

I'll bet it was fun while it lasted! When I was a kid, Grampa had a retired work horse - Billie. Billie was the sweetest tempered horse ever. All of us kids would get on him at the same time, using his tail and mane, and he'd just lumber around the farm slowly, take us down to the creek and let us jump off of him into the water and just pal around with us. I finally got rid of his tack two years ago but now I wished I'd have kept it.

117 Another cool thing about mighty Pantera was that she was a preferential hunter. Her cat food would gather dust for eight or nine months a year. But when she had a litter and went into teaching mode, it was ludicrous. She would kill WAY more than normal. Just a constant shredding of woodland creatures until the kittens could kill and shred on their own.

Cats are awesome.

I used to have a female bear neighbor - she adopted a large, disused materials shed on my property as a den. Most of the time, she was pretty cool.

But when she'd have cubs and come out of hibernation, and be gaunt and ferocious for prey, with hungry mouths to feed, I'd wait for her to leave for work. Then, for a couple weeks, I'd bring down a mixing bowl with cheap-o fatty ground beef and eggs and leave it for her, til she got replenished enough to really hunt and teach.

I love bears too.

I've always hoped my ex looked out for her, but I doubt it.

125 Basement Cat #106: [Cats] don't always need to nudge . . . cats can squeeze through small openings because their collarbones are not attached to other bones-- this allows them to get through small spaces.

Well, true, she doesn't need much (and funny, but, the guycat needs it open just a bit more than she leaves it).
But from barely ajar, just not latched, this little gal can nudge the door open with her head, and also can paw it open from outside, and does the same with the kitchen window. Only cat we've ever had who figured that out.

When monkeys see, monkeys imitate.

When cats see, they go, fine, let that one do it.

128 It's a small thing, but it's another reason I hate the CA people infesting the front range. They do nothing to protect the trash, or the bears. So they end up with hungry bears feeding on trash, and then the bears get dependent and aggressive, and get shot.
