The Morning Report - 11/6/19

robabc.jpg

Good morning kids. Midweek and the results from the off-year elections are in. The big story revolves around the key race for governor of Kentucky and Democrat Greg Beshear is ahead of Matt Bevin by a thin margin, roughly 4,000 votes or 0.3%. Of course, as the Democrats race to stuff 10 or 20,000 more ballots into the trunk of Al Franken's Buick LeSabre, Beshear is declaring victory, but Bevin as of this morning has yet to concede. Oddly enough, Kentucky has elected its first black attorney general, who just happens to be a Republican. Congratulations to Daniel Cameron and vayr-ge-hargit to Nazi collaborator George Soros and his AG project.

Elsewhere, the other big story is Democrats taking control of both houses of the Virginia legislature for the first time in decades. With all the locust carpetbaggers escaping from blue state shit holes, as well as the creeping socialist-sharia from DC infecting the surrounding counties, perhaps the die had been cast. But the fact that the GOP did not have a candidate in fully one quarter of the races is inexcusable.

Also of note in the plus column, Republican Tate Evers has won the gubernatorial race in Mississippi and Washington State voters narrowly rejected a ballot initiative to reinstate affirmative action after a 20-year ban. On the down side, New York City overwhelmingly enacts "ranked voting," which all but legalizes election rigging. Can't seem to find any results for some of the other races, so stay tuned.

Now on to our regularly scheduled meshugas...

PS: Thanks to all for the suggestions on how to remove the BPA coating from steel food cans. So far, acetone soaking overnight didn't cut it. Will try Drano next.

PPS: Hang on a tic. Just for a goof, I started lightly scraping a soaked test piece with a razor blade and, voila! Bare metal. I'll let it soak more and try again this afternoon.

6 Texas election results:

Proposition 4
The constitutional amendment prohibiting the imposition of an individual income tax, including a tax on an individual's share of partnership and unincorporated association income.

There is currently no income tax in Texas but the constitution does allow the legislature to impose an income tax if approved in a statewide referendum. The amendment would further limit the legislature's ability in being able to do so.

1,254,393 voted in favor of passage.

And the cases of dem red-ass are legendary.
They are already whining.

What it does do, is requires 2/3 of both houses to agree before putting a personal income tax vote to the people.
If Texas' finances became that dire, they wouldn't have a problem. But dems gotta dem.

Well, according to a recently banned troll, he was slated to win, until Trump stumped for him.

30% approval and a State which historically has never re-elected a Republican governor suggests that it wasn't Trump that was the problem.

Bevins is apparently deeply unpopular so I wouldn't be shocked if he loses. OTOH, I suspect that the Dems wouldn't necessarily have to cheat to get this election. I think McConnell hates Bevins and would be glad to ensure his defeat without the Dems lifting a finger.

41 About Virginia. I heard a lot of happy talk yesterday on our conservative radio about how Virginia can be saved and all you have to do is go out and vote.

Well.

I mean, I guess they have to say that. Can't say "might as well stay home." I get it.

But here is the deal on Virginia - heavily populated areas are deep, deep blue. Northern Virginia has tons more Demcorats and if every Republican goes out and votes and half the Democrats do, the Dem will win. It is not even close.

There was some talk about how to stir people up to vote - remind them the Dems are coming for your guns, want abortion up to point of birth, want sanctuary cities, want higher taxes, want transgender reading days for pre-schoolers in the library....

Except Virginians want all of those things. No, not me, no not bluebell, not any moron here who lives in the Commonwealth - but all those people who came out and elected Democrats everywhere - that is what they wanted.

I keep saying that part of democracy is accepting defeat. We got beat here in Virginia. Just 10 years the Republican governor won by 30 points. But if you look at the vote counts over the next two elections, it rapidly went the other way. We are going to continue to get beat for a while.

46 As a Kentucky resident, I hope Daniel Cameron does what his predecessor, Andy Beshear, did: sue the governor every chance he gets.

Bevin ran afoul of the teachers' union because he dared to try to address an underfunded pension. Can't say I agreed with how it was attempted, but something needs to be done. That and the fact that he was from CT, which is an awful place to be from if you are a Republican in KY. But illegals from South and Central America are okay for the Dums.

His family had a bell factory that used old fashioned processes. Lost wax casting or something like that. It was in a historical building to boot.

His dad gave it to him and he ran the business into the ground. One night the factory caught on fire and burnt to the ground, he didn't have insurance.

He went whining to his buddy blumenthal who convinced the State to bail him out so he could rebuild. He took the money and pretty much left the State without rebuilding anything. I am not sure if his family ever rebuilt the factory as we had left CT at that point.

Interesting reaction I've seen to O'Keefe's latest: media people asking "why couldn't this have been reported by *anyone else*" and "why wasn't this taken to a 'credible' news organization,"

THAT is why it's a bombshell, it's a bit of cognitive dissonance. ABC is an alleged 'credible' news source to the blue checkmarks asking those questions, while O'Keefe is labeled guy who makes fake news with "selectively edited" video. Bzzzt! This shows the opposite is true. . . And then they consider who else could the clip be taken to, and then Bzzzt! they see other media companies ignoring/dismissing this O'Keefe video.

Well done, Project Veritas!

In primary elections, any candidate can request a recount. In general elections, any candidate for state, county, district, or city office can request a recount, with the exception of candidates for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor, and General Assembly member. In these latter cases, a candidate who has won at least 25 percent of the votes cast for the successful candidate for the office in question can contest the election, which entails a recount. Candidates are liable for the costs associated with a recount

60 It may be indicative of nothing, but if you don't read the warning signs you're being foolish. Democrats are slowly marching across states, local elections and governors mansions- and successfully winning. The GOP, as usual, is playing yesterday's game and getting their asses handed to them.

Virginia has a governor who mocked African Americans and a LT Governor accused of sexual misconduct. Yet they still won the legislature and won numerous races in Republican districts where the GOTV sucked balls. Ow Virginia will get it good and hard with the first step being gun control.

If this is the way Republicans are going to play the game next year, you better buy some lube or a ticket to Norway.

And I love this little nugget buried in that story:

Republican also loses a Governors race in KY maybe it's about the
candidates and not a referendum on the President. It's embarrassing I

67 Found this at the Courier Journal. I would have just posted the link but, my gawd, what an annoying site!

The first step under Kentucky law is a recanvass of the vote, which is a review of the vote totals by each county clerk - counting absentee votes and checking printouts to make sure the numbers they transmitted to the State Board of Elections were correct.

State law allows for a recanvassing if a county clerk or a county board of elections notices a discrepancy, or if a candidate makes a written request to the secretary of state.

There is no provision for an automatic recount under Kentucky law. A candidate must file a petition with the Franklin Circuit Court by the Tuesday following the election.

If petitioned, the judge would take possession of the paper ballots and voting machines and conduct their own recount. After doing so, the judge would make the final decision on who won the race, but that would be subject to appeal to the Kentucky Court of Appeals or the Kentucky Supreme Court.

The third step that a candidate could take is a formal election contest, which must also be filed by the Tuesday after the election. Under this contest, the candidate challenging the results must specify the grounds for the action, such as a violation of campaign finance rules or specific problems when it comes to how ballots were cast.

Last but not least, there is Section 90 of the state constitution, which addresses a "contest of election for Governor or Lieutenant Governor."

Section 90 states: "Contested elections for Governor and Lieutenant Governor shall be determined by both Houses of the General Assembly, according to such regulations as may be established by law."

Here's the link anyway but be warned, tons of ads and you have to turn off your adblocker...

75 For Lurking et alia, from early this morning at Insty's ...

KENTUCKY: Matt Bevin's Gubernatorial Loss Has Nothing to do With
President Trump. "In Kentucky, Governor Matt Bevin lost to a Democrat.
No Republican Governor of Kentucky has ever won re-election. Democrats
have rushed to make this about Bevin, but consider Bevin was at 30%
approval and, after Trump's visit, got within striking distance of
victory tonight. This really was not about Trump. Kentucky Republicans
swept all the other statewide races. Kentucky elected its first black
Attorney General, who also happens to be Kentucky's first Republican
Attorney General since 1948."
.

And an interaction between two Insty commenters:

geek49203 . 12 minutes ago
KY
guy here. 1. Bevin won 4 years ago cause his opponent ran on the
wonders of ObamaCare. Bevin was weak then, and was quite the surprise
when he won. 2. Bevin has done so good things, but no one likes the
smell of infected corrupted abscesses when they are lanced. It's been
quite contentious for 4 years. 3. Bevin himself doesn't exactly have a
winning personality that jumps through the TV. That's a real problem,
and quite frankly, the main campaign tool of the Dems was that he was
easy to hate. 4. Americans always vote for the better looking candidate.
That is true here too

css123 replying to geek49203 . 2 minutes ago

It doesn't help that he pissed of most of the teachers in the state.
Throw in a spoiler Libertarian candidate for those that despise Bevin
and Beshear equally (that I think based on county breakdowns would have
likely split enough for Bevin from those that would have voted without
the L on the ballot), you have this result.

Now to be fair,
there's still some outstanding votes to be tallied (enough to push Bevin
over if luck suddenly breaks his way), but this isn't a huge win for
the dems with the GOP taking every single other partisan race on the
ballot today (both statewide and special election general assembly
seats). Cameron will do to Beshear what he did to Bevin (and considering
the corruption in Beshears family tree, his dad was the previous gov
before Bevin) it's probably not going to be pretty. Adams will likely
make some improvements to the SOS office, though he's GOPe in the
McConnell camp. The GOP retains majorities in both chambers of the state
house. Beshear isn't getting anything done.

Posted by: andycanuck at November 06, 2019 07:40 AM (Dh1wo)

76 My thoughts exactly. Trump damn near worked miracles
getting Bevins anywhere near to winning but it would be great if he
pulled him over the finish line too.

And Yertle really needs to stop playing games with R's he personally does not like.

78 That transman doing all those social experiments in order to determine why women don't want to date xim is fascinating (and sad). This is madness on display.

The answer is biological. These women are dating a person they think is a man because they are attracted to - get this - men, including all that, uh, package includes (they want dick). Most women also want some form of settling down and having a family --- or at least the option to do so. Settling down with a fellow woman who believes she is a man is the opposite of stability and possibility to reproduce.

Maybe the best approach to combat the current trans trend is fact about trans life. The messy, gross aftereffects of the surgery, the chances you'll date/to whom you will realistically be attractive to, that statistically the suicide rate is about the same (IIRC), that over 90% of kids who don't medically transition revert back to their biological sex by the time they reach adulthood (i.e., it's a phase you will grow out of), etc.. Just the facts, not judgement.

"How do I find when and where my local crime meetings occur?"

In our situation, we have access to that POS social media platform known as NextDoor.

But...one good thing out of it has been the open complaining about local crime in our general neighborhoods.
And some community leaders reached out and basically demanded a sit-down community meeting between city/county officials and residents of the communities to talk about the topic.

Your area may have something like this.

If not, and if crime is increasing, find a way to force government engagement on the topic.

papertiger0 . an hour ago
I went and looked at the history of politics in Virginia. Up until the second Reagan admin the GOP was never competitive. I mean not even close. The state house would be 33D, 7R in the senate, 75D, 10R in the assembly. That's the historical average.

A fifty fifty split was the aberration. Don't expect that commonwealth of louts to ever be competitive.

BTW= you all like throwing shade on California, Virginia is a hundred times worse. It's only their anemic population total that allows them to hide out.

I mean Bustamonte got dunked on for open racism in California. That's how we got Arnold. In Virginia blackface and minstrel show is a political career enhancement.

139 It wasn't that the perps should not be held accountable. The point was more about this incident being part of a continuing circle of violence related to the cartels. This incident was highlighted by the relatives for a reason and they were pretty successful with the initial reaction, including the president. But in the next few weeks you are going to be hearing more about what these people were into.

BTW this kind of stuff happens every day in Mexico. People, including children are killed or disappear forever. They keep finding mass graves and bodies all over the country. You could not pay me enough money to go there or allow my family to go.

The worst part for me is how brazen the groups doing this have become.

Then he dies in prison and the cameras break for 30 minutes.

Breakaway Mormon groups have been in Mexico for over a hundred years, long before the cartels came around. Many moved there when the Mormon church outlawed polygamy in the 1800s and they have built communities.

Some are very violent, mostly against other Mormon groups they believe are not following the word of God as they believe it. They are more like cults than that real Mormons.

It's easy to say, but people have no concept of what it would take. The idea that you can take out "only a few bad apples" and things will be fixed is the kind of dangerous nonsense that got us into trouble in Afghanistan and Iraq. If we want in acknowledging that we needed to hunt down and eliminate 90% of the current government officials, and 100% of the current military officers, and acknowledge that it would certainly require several hundred thousand - probably over a million - civilian casualties to accomplish that, then we could do it. But I don't think this country has the will to do it.

If we had gone into Afghanistan acknowledging that the civilian population was *always* going to oppose us and support the Taliban, we would not have taken nearly so many casualties, and would not have stayed nearly as long. Same thing would happen in Mexico. You can't "fix" it without eliminating a very significant part of the civilian population there.

Truth is more like BIG COAL damaged lives and communities with strip mining and filth and the hard workers were defeated and turned to "Medication and Mt Dew) and are fucked. The DC employees inundated the close to capitol areas and changed things to their liking same in the NOVA with techkies.

I think the break up of Ma Bell is a get parallel.

It's not that the new smaller companies will be this way or that way politically, it's that suddenly you have a bunch of companies fighting for the same space that one major company had before. The competition will lead to innovation instead of insular goals like political control over speech.

That's as long as the new smaller pieces are actually competing against each other and don't immediately form a cartel or something.

Democrats figured it out and then figured out a new and improved way to keep A voters on the plantation. Todays Virginia Democrats are the beneficiaries of that racist inheritance.

288 "Corporate socialism aims to arrive at a singular, one-world state, with vast globalist monopolies controlling production. These monopolies would be paralleled by a socialism or equality of reduced expectations for everyone else. "

Go back and give the `1975 film "Rollerball" (James Caan) another look. Not widely regarded as great sci-fi at the time, it has turned out to be more eerily prophetic than almost any other sci-fi film made. (although we still may end up in a Gattaca world)

Rollerball is set in that corporate, one world state, where Corporations have more power over the areas they control than Governments ever did, and the world is ruled by an oligarchy of mega-corps who each control a specific industry, and their own mega-cities.

a key moment is when the protagonist realizes that all history is being quietly erased, from everywhere, and no one except himself knows or cares. They're too busy being entertained.

These companies are acting like their own legal system, outside of the one we've already have and have had for a few hundred years. It's never perfect, but it's close enough for government work.
I'd like to see a law passed that extends the rights ensconced in our Constitution to consumers, too. This means that speech will not be censored in any way by anyone in any business for any reason. Citizens will hold all rights to any and all information they may generate in any form for any reason. This could take the form of a sort of individual copyright over your papers in order to keep them secure.

Funny how the right to privacy allows for killing you own child, but yet doesn't extend to everything else in your personal life. I'd think that the tippy-top of that penumbra had been established by precedent and everything else that's less serious would also be private, too.

But what do I know? I'm just an irredeemable deplorable who expects my own government to protect my freedom. Is that too much to ask? IIRC, they mentioned something like that at one time.

You folks that want to use the military to get rid of the cartels ... you better be fucking ready, willing, and able to get rid of a piss-pot of Mexican people, the Mexican national identity, and figure out how to reshape the Mexican way of life.

And then stare down the rest of the world for committing something that's gonna' look a whole lot like genocide.

Or ... you can do what we always do ... send in some troops, watch them get slowly fucked up over time ... then shrug your shoulders yet again and wonder why all that overwhelming firepower didn't somehow fix the problem.

==========

His assertion that Trump caused Bevin's loss was based on a poll done the week before that had Bevin at +5.

He knows we don't put too much stock in polls, and then he turned around and made a huge deal about a poll that said Bevin +5 leading to a Bevin loss of less than 1%. That was his ironclad proof that Trump caused Bevin's loss.

He was honestly not very smart. Not because he puts a lot of stock in polls, but because he doesn't even seem to remember who his audience is.

360 At least TABOR survived this round of regular assaults in Colorado. Based on the map, most of the metro counties went in favor of gutting it moderately (with the notable exception of Jefferson County), with the rest of the state going hard to retain it. That won't be possible within three years and TABOR will be gone by '22, but it was nice to see it survive one more siege.

I live here.

Neither candidate, Bevin or Beshear, put out much in the way of a positive vibe. Bevin had a hard time throughout his term of staying on message - he wanted to be a reformer, but never really stuck to a plan. He seemed to just kinda' bounce around picking fight after fight. And Bevin did a shitty job of never, ever putting out the public case for what he was doing.

Case in point - he squared off against the teacher's union over their pension plan. He was right ... but he refused to sell his point to the people. The union ran commercials. They won debate in the eyes of the voters.

And - like some have said - the electorate matters. They'll absolutely hate Beshear - but being an off year, they were honestly .... and I'm not kidding ... more interested in UK and UL basketball opening nights than that election.

They'll go Trump, bigly, in 2020.

432 "If we had gone into Afghanistan acknowledging that the civilian population was *always* going to oppose us and support the Taliban, we would not have taken nearly so many casualties"

There is so much wrong with that statement I don't have time to unpack it. But our ROE's even during King Turd's reign, never reflected that. Nor did our policies support that presumption. Nor is that presumption even remotely correct. The AFG people do not "largely" support the Taliban as it exists today. Most of them want to be left alone to continue pursuing their tribal ways. But on a tribal environment where some people have fins and numbers, and you don't, well you know the rest.

And lastly, linking that to our casualties is insulting. We were there. It was war and people die pursuing the mission. You want to instead say, "you know what- our goals were wrong and we should have just set up shop at Balad, killed every bad fucker we could find, and then garrisoned until they picked up their heads again"- maybe I'm with you, with the understanding these engagements are complex and there is a lot of "whack a mole" we have to play in the 21at century to mitigate these threats.

I was around for a little of it last night and found that he was just being a dick. Not really anything to get banned for.

He was posting data from some local channel website and was getting trashed for it. He called the loss an hour before the polls closed when the state doesn't release numbers and it was all speculation.

The vote was a LOT closer than anticipated when it was all said and done, so he was overconfident.

Banning him was likely more frustration for him being a dick more than the actual usual troll. I think it was him siding with Gerg that was the final straw.

440 Mexican President Obrador looks like he's going to be a greater disappointment than even Vicente Fox was, for the same reasons. When he won, some were worried that he was going to be a socialist dictator - I was hopeful, because a harsh dictator willing to kill thousands is the only thing that could save Mexico now. But in his statements yesterday and today, he's announced complete, unilateral surrender to the cartels. He's going to fight them with the "power of love" or something - yeah, while he accepts boxcar loads of their cash on the side.

all this talk about "fighting the cartels" - Forget it, in Mexico the fight's already over. Cartels won, cartels now have total control, with the Government existing only as a figurehead for ceremonial purposes. (thinks of the Cartels as now holding a Shogun's role)

We do not have the power or the will to change that, all we can do is try to wall them off from ourselves.

Heh. Excellent snark. Big, big fan of snark.

The only thing we could do ... maybe ... is set up safe zones for the military and police, allowing them to fight the cartels. The problem would be ... the military and police are in on it. They'd hide behind their families and kill our boys and girls inside the safe zones.

Kids - we can't fix this problem. You kill the cartels - you're killing Mexicans. And the Mexicans will resent the high-handed gringos more than they hate the cartels.

This is the American Paradox. We have the ability to project power anywhere in the world. The problem is - knowing when to do with it, and when not to.

We invaded a small area of Mexico a century ago to try to stop a "cartel" of thieves and killers, led by Pancho Villa. 478 TABOR is Colorado's TAxpayer Bill Of Rights, which requires the state gov to return surplus tax revenue to citizens. Prop CC would have effed this, but per JJ's link it was defeated.

An awesome law that is the bete noire of the CO Left. They hate it with the heat of a thousand suns.

The Taxpayers Bill of Rights basically says any revenue beyond last year's + inflation goes back to the taxpayers. Makes runaway spending much harder.

483 I don't have any beef with Lurking Lurker. It's not so much what he's saying at this point as how he's saying it - the condescending, bear-baiting nature of it - and saying it endlessly like a broken record. It looks a lot like late-stage BSG (another guy who was a lot more reasonable before the end). He should take some time to cool off for his own good; he's trying to prove he's right on the internet a little too hard.

If you get banned, it's because you've crossed a line with personal attacks, violence or racialism. The real kind, that is.

If LL did that, then he's gone. Also being an asshole will do it as well.

489 The Democrat Party has an easy to understand message. Everyone knows what they stand for. Open borders. Free sh-t. Climate Totalitarianism. Their voters know what they're getting.

The Republican Party doesn't really stand for anything but tax cuts - which are irrelevant when half of the country doesn't pay taxes. And since they don't have any clear and consistent program, the Democrats can easily define them instead as racists who oppose progress, and put them perpetually on defense.

I just wanted to clarify, because when the sick nonsense they did comes out, the LDS church will be blamed. People conflate LDS and FLDS all the time, and those of us who are LDS have to deal with it.

I don't know how I feel about US military in Mexico. The murders can't go unanswered, but I don't know the proper response.

494 124 Right there with you in Stafford. It's going to be a mess here even moreso than it has become. Northern VA is has crept south in a tidal wave. It's going to be Fairfax south here - it already is in the Aquia/Garrisonville area.

They don't even bother studying power, gas, sewer, traffic, etc. as they toss up houses all over the place here. The traffic on weekends is abyssmal - 95 is backed up so they jump on Rt. 1 and jam locals trying to run errands and whatnot on the weekend.

I talked to Milde for a long time couple weeks ago. Of course his name wasn't on some ballots yesterday in a few precincts. Of course. Trial run for 2020 I am sure.

My elderly, 80 yrs. old, parents are both depressed as hell with the results from yesterday in the Commonwealth. It's unreal how some of these lunatics won but insanity is the norm. The world has been turned upside down over the years. Black is white, right is left, etc.

Ugh. I need a drink and I just woke up.

501 LL is a troll. In every sense of the word. Banning him is a good idea, even if it is possible to work around.

He starts off with semi-interested comments, before slowly segueing into his consistently shtick. He really brings nothing to the party except his nasty "get out of the bubble" speeches and anti-Trump talk. Since I read Daily Kos about once a week, to see what they other team thinks is happening in the world, these are phrases I often read. Terms directly from DK and similar sites are what tipped me off early, but his consistently sneaky way of crawling into threads and spreading anti-PDJT rhetoric made it obvious.

509 Regarding LL, from what I've seen, it probably has some issues where it believes that it is a secret king who is the wise and observant participant that is graciously sharing its knowledge with the blog. Its psyche though is brittle and when challenged, this sort of person cannot handle it and doubles down and then doubles down more because it simply cannot admit any mistakes. It is not a classic troll other than engaging in concern trolling in some posts. I also suspect a person who is not particularly well educated and relies on the "media" for information to pass on its wisdom. Its knowledge of polling, political and social history, and even political parties positions are scant so it relies on msm commentators and writers that share its traits who are by and large undereducated idiots or partisan shills.

The classic trolls don't really interact--use simple and short names, burp out whatever Blue Corp's line is today, and I suspect that some are actually scripts from groups like Shartblue, etc. because I see the same stuff on other comment sites.

~~~ A contributory factor, yes. But Hillary's ego, "Why am I not ahead 50 points", influenced her campaign focus (Where, exactly, is Wisconsin?) and ultimately the GOTV results.
So, Clinton is the only 'reason' she lost those states to Trump.
514 Matt Bevin is a deeply unlikeable guy. He pisses off everyone he comes in contact with. My fellow Republicans can't stand him, but we all voted for the lesser of evils. He trash talks party members, and hasn't got a diplomatic bone in his body. Thing is, he's a pretty good governor. The teachers all hate him because he was truthful, even though he's the only governor who has even attempted to save their pathetic pension plan. But when they pulled an illegal strike, he demanded the names of the involved and made public how many of them just took advantage to get a free day off, without actually going to the capital or doing any protesting. Bevin is like that smart kid who tests well, but doesn't play well with the other students and can't work in groups.
Your constant invoking of Allah is cringeworthy. And it embarrasses yourself. Stop with the "inshalla." You might as well be crying, Allahu akbar! Just stop it. The Biblical phrase you want is Deo volente. For the devout, the initials suffice, so you can use DV (in italics).
