The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

This editorial pulls no punches, and it illuminates, at least peripherally, a profound difference between the West (or at least some of us) and the Arab/Muslim world.

Is the Arab psyche more comfortable in an authoritarian setting? And is the driver Islam, or the Arab predisposition to authoritarianism?

Just look back at the last 100 years, and you will discover numerous instances of grassroots protests up to outright revolutions, all of which led to...authoritarianism. So while I am enjoying the trouble that the current protests in Lebanon are causing for Iran and Hezbollah, I am far too jaded to expect anything to come out of it other than a lot of death and destruction, leading to absolutely no change for the people of Lebanon.

The fact that the protests lack a guiding hand, or any discernible leadership, not to mention any defined goals aside from vague slogans calling for "change to the system in Lebanon," is making it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's also safe to assume that the bitterness, frustrations and anger harbored by the youth for politics and politicians, the same cohort of corrupt hedonists who have brought Lebanon to the precipice of economic ruin, will continue fuelling the protests.

Simon Bolívar said it best when he described the struggle for freedom in South America...

He Who Serves a Revolution Plows the Sea

He despaired of what he saw as the immutable character of the people, and I wonder whether that applies to the Arab world as well. In fact, Western political philosophy relies on a mindset that is rare, and getting rarer. Every idiot Millennial who waxes poetic about a socialist paradise, and every politician who chips away at free speech, and every soccer mom who embraces socialist policies because "it's for the children," erodes the 2,500 year-old bedrock of freedom and liberty and self determination.

Are we becoming like the rest of the world? America was blissfully free of the sort of violent but pointless protest that much of the world favors. Sure, we have had our share, but for the most part, when Americans protested we had some sort of concrete goal in mind. But that seems to be changing, and the free-floating aggression that we see in most of the world has been embraced by the current crop of violent protesters. But what are they protesting? "We don't like the status quo?" Sounds rather 3rd-worldish to me.

Actually, there is a defined goal - to get rid of the inbred families in Lebanon that pass on high political office to their family members as inheritances from generation to generation. It's even worse than Illinois.

More than 1/2 the country pays no federal income tax. This is at the root of our problem.

You say FSA, and everyone thinks of the welfare queens. But it's a lot more than that. A family with a couple fo kids, earning $60K is part of the FSA.

Bush Jr created this by removing millions of lower and middle class workers from the tax rolls altogether. And then boasting about it as if it was something to celebrate. Trump enlarged this group, by doubling the child tax credit, removing even more people from paying any taxes.

When 50%+ of the country knows it can vote itself free shit without every having to pay for it....guess what happens?

The argument here is that we have a baby-boom across the world, grown up disillusioned by normal politics as young people usually are.

Here "normal politics" means Trump, and the standard Republocrat line about a modest social-network with capitalism... for the rich, old, and/or white. Capitalism does nothing for those without capital, like youngsters born to low-to-middle class parents and to immigrants. That Trump and the Republocrats aren't the same thing doesn't matter to them.

In the Near East, "normal politics" means fascism with an Islamic facade, against ISIS. The youth in the Near East hate both.

In 1848 the reactionary governments (or neoreactionaries like Napoleon III) successfully squashed the revolts. In 1968, America capitulated and handed over its universities to the Left.

I'm not taking sides on what Trump or others of the good guys should do. I'm just sketching out what we're in for.

Tucker had a segment the other night in which he proposed that the embrace of socialism by so many of today's young adults is a result of demanding that HS grads MUST attend college and then end up with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, often for degrees in which they cannot find a job, or the job pays 1/10th of what they need to pay it back. They blame it on capitalism, because the college is the one making huge amounts of money on them, and in exchange get nothing in return. So they believe capitalism must be replaced by a fairer system.

Sorry Tucker, how about placing the blame where it belongs, on the parents of said people who paraded their kids to schools of outrageous expense because they wanted to brag about their kid's degree from super special U of $$.

The Franco-German Rhineland (Charlemagne's base) didn't evolve democracy as such, but it developed a system of mostly-peaceful feudalism 800-1200 AD. They hashed out their differences at tournament. The real nasty happened over at France with the 100 Years War, and in Germany.

The Hajnal Line is a knock-on from that. The Rhineland, Benelux, northern Italy, and northern France is prosperous. Outside that, East Germany and Sicily suck balls.

Israel is acutely aware that a large chunk of its security is based on the quality of a few hundred fighter pilots, so they don't let other considerations affect who gets to be a fighter pilot.

But in Saudi, if you want to wash a pilot out of the F-15 program, you have to worry about what tribe the pilot belongs to, whether the tribe can be compensated if you wash a tribal member out of the F-15 program, and a lot of other considerations that have nothing to do with the quality of the pilot.

Guess which country has the better fighter pilots?

Tucker Carlson's solution to this is interesting. He recommends using the massive endowments of universities, especially Harvard and Yale, to pay student loan debt. He reasons it is the corrupt college administrators who created the massive tuition hikes and they - the most useless people in America - are sitting pretty while the kids they have indoctrinated blame "capitalism." Carlson says that any presidential candidate who figures that out and puts the blame where it should go will win the election.

Actually doing anything about it would be another thing altogether. I can see leftist judges (all products of elite universities) siding with the administrators.

139 Tucker had a segment the other night in which he proposed that the embrace of socialism by so many of today's young adults is a result of demanding that HS grads MUST attend college and then end up with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, often for degrees in which they cannot find a job, or the job pays 1/10th of what they need to pay it back. They blame it on capitalism, because the college is the one making huge amounts of money on them, and in exchange get nothing in return. So they believe capitalism must be replaced by a fairer system.

Sorry Tucker, how about placing the blame where it belongs, on the parents of said people who paraded their kids to schools of outrageous expense because they wanted to brag about their kid's degree from super special U of $$.

They are the ones that found against Duke Power that ended employment testing.

Which then, employment tests switched to having a college degree in order to get a job. When not every job truly requires a degree.

So now, everyone thinks they HAVE to have a degree to get a job.

Glenn Reynolds has suggested for years that universities be required to refund tuition to students who end up with useless degrees. They'll then have a real financial incentive to ditch the useless degrees.

If you haven't seen it, the latest fad in US universities is that it's racist to correct spelling or grammar. It's not even soft bigotry at this point, the KKK is running the Left.

Knowing the extensive rescue network in this county I suspect that the culprit will be identified and punished.

no one is thinking about that! no one is thinking about "must go to college to get job"

they are thinking:

parents: need to send Precious Prince/Princess to big name school to brag about! Need Princess to meet/marry a good prospect from the Right college!

kids: all my friends are going to XX and I want to get away from my parents and party and wear cool swag

here are the priorities among parents in my "set" of upper middle class coastal elites:
- School Name/Brand
- Can Buffy find a Chad?
- Football Football Football!
- Will they meet the right people?
- Needs to be far from home for prestige points
- Ivy OF COURSE because WE are smart so our kids are too

- DECOUPLE THE SPORTS!! only club/rec sports IN college, the rest spin off to youth semi-pro leagues
- Allow Single Sex Male Colleges!!!! jesus christmas why are there still girls colleges and yet no mens are allowed? the HBCs by me are struggling. if they could re-brand as Girls School/Boys School models with high priority on preparing kids for LIFE and not just going to and playing sports... The U.S. Constitution was designed for a republic and the idea of homogeneity of the populace was an old one which you can see in Montesquieu, Rousseau, etc. and even further back dating to the Reformation as even monarchs preferred to have all one religion versus a mixed population. Madison argued in No. 10 that a federal republic could encompass broader diversity but that only works if most decisions are made the state and local level rather than national.

Where Madison goes wrong is that losers at the local and state level inevitably hookup with others across the U.S. and nationalize the issue--e.g. trans bathrooms for example. The wading of the U.S. courts to nationalize social situations has made things much worse.

Madison's ideas work on economics but not so much on differing social ideals about what is a desirable society. These often have quasi-religious symbolisms to separate believers and non-believers and then the believers demand an inquisition to burn and punish the heretics.

We haven't really changed all that much from history because of the idiotic concept that this time things will be different and appear destined to repeat some of the less desirable mistakes.

Exactly. A lot of endowment money is from rich donors, usually alums. Educational institutions are 501 non profits, although some are for profit schools. I don't know how, other than by changing tax code, you require a school to give refunds basically to former students.

I don't know how you fix this. The politicians that claim they are going to make college free, or the government is going to cancel student debt( since most loans are now guaranteed by the federal government- Obama's takeover of school loans) seems like a more likely scenario than forcing colleges to pay back loans. And those politicians are going to be popular.

That entire takeover was a setup for free college/indoctrination for all by the Dems to keep under 35 year olds voting for them.

Right now, a bunch of idiot state and federal congress people are submitting bills to their respective legislature to force the NCAA to allow student athletes to be able to attract and accept endorsement money while in school. Which will essentially allow the better athletes to be owned by whatever syndicate, or big corporation or even Joe the Mattress Store owner to pay them to attend said advertiser's school of choice.

They are hell bent of doing this, given courage by Gavin Newsome's stupid bill in CA.

Rotten Tomatoes has been used wrong since it's inception.

It's a barometer of critical opinion, not a measure of a movie's quality. The best examples to make this point are the 70% movies that everyone loves vs. the 90% movies no one's heard of. Is the second 20% better than the first? No, it's nonsense. And yet, people seem to think of RT like that.

The best way to deal with film criticism in general is to find critics that you like reading and, perhaps, even agree with. RT is great as a place to aggregate all of these critics and read through them to find that kind of critic for you.

That's how I use it, anyway.

Funny you mentioned Kumon. I've been involved with them for 18 years prompted by my desire to provide my kids with strong Math and Reading Comprehension skills. The program is superior to any other supplemental program currently available. My grand children will also use it as a supplement. Ideally, I recommend parents to use their preferred home schooling curriculum plus ad Kumon as a supplement. Oregon, of course will make Kumon franchises wealthy given the states latest woke change from Math education to some sort of genderless patriarchy free sort of Math curriculum.

349 I have combed the internet and talked with family and friends looking for a solution to my neighbor's loud bass and can't find any solutions. I'm very concerned about my husband's well being. I thought I'd come out of lurkdom to ask the intelligent crowd here if there are any ideas.

A month ago our neighbors woke us up at 1am with loud bass music. This has been going on for about 9 months. I never got a chance to call the police, for the 8th time, because my husband started grabbing his left side of his chest. Rushed him to the ER. He had a heart attack and had another while waiting on blood test results to come back to confirm whether had had one or not. Granted, he had blockages, stents put in and he's ok. But his main culprit to the problem is high blood pressure which his previous doctor did a piss poor job of helping him to control. We did diet, exercise, etc... but his bp was hard to control. New doctor now and blood pressure is still slightly high but nothing like it was.

One of the top causes of high bp is getting upset. But for quite some time, we've been dealing with awfully loud neighbors. We moved away from a loud business that we could do nothing really about to now what seemed like a quieter neighborhood. But the guys across the street like to drink and get louder as they drink. Law has been called a number of times. I called over the weekend about the same thing. I told dispatch I want to speak to an officer because this has officially became very unhealthy for my husband. I waited outside. A county pd rolled by their place and mine really slow while the bass was really loud... but he kept going and no one paid me a visit at all.

The next day they were booming again. This time my husband called and told dispatch they turn it up and turn it down alternately today. She said they would send a unit out. After 15 mins they turned it off completely and it stayed that way so hubby called them back and told dispatch. He feels the police have better things to do than show up where a problem has stopped. Plus, if the cops don't hear it, there's nothing they can do. Dispatch asked did he want to speak to an officer anyway. He said there's no point, he's called several times about the same people. We've talked to officers twice but it keeps happening. She asked him again and hubby said he'd think about it.

Now, a neighbor down the road who did this earlier this year pushed things with his bass and an officer cited him a hefty fine. But these guys across the street must be special or something because absolutely nothing happens to these guys. One night when the cops showed up they couldn't get them to open the door no matter how hard they knocked. The music was blaring away as they tried. Every time the cops show up, these guys run off in the woods. That night they wouldn't come out of the house.

Moving is not an option for a while. I'm having to work 3rd shift because we have extra medical bills to pay now and I really worry about husband being at home alone at night if it happens again. We've tried noise cancelling stuff, try to drown out the bass with noise through a subwoofer and all. Apparently it doesn't bother other people in the neighborhood because they don't live across from them and hear it like we do. I even talked to a guy who doesn't live there but claims he owns the place and explained to him my husband's health. He seemed confused, did not speak english well, but I finally got him to understand it's the bass, not the music, just tell them to keep the bass down and we have no problems. I even told him about my husband's health. This was recently. But the next day those guys were at it again.

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them and if you're a praying person, prayers would be greatly appreciated too. It's not a distant thump you can hear indoors. It's a noise you can FEEL coming through the walls and overcomes the low frequency white noise we run through our subwoofer. And they're about 70 - 75 feet away.

good for the observant Catholic, but imo the Bible student should ask a lot of questions about their Christian heritage, and they should separate the traditions adopted from pagans but "Christianized" over the centuries. While most church goers are good people, they have been led into non-Christian tradition ... often in contradiction to scripture.

Steeples are phallic ... bells to wake the gods ... the list is long. "The Church" itself, is nice as a building, but we moved to a spiritual body (ekklesia, often translated as "church") of Christ, with JC (or CJ actually) as our high priest forever. The true church is composed of all Christians ... regardless of whether they belong to any certain denomination or not. The Catholic denomination has been infiltrated, it would seem. Many "observant Catholics" seem to recognize this ... good for them.

The only way it can possibly work is to attempt to place the state lines to approximate the tribal lines where they have traditionally been. Yes there will always be skirmishes along the border, this is to be expected as it has been this way for millennia, however there will be relative stability because each tribe will have its own space. Forcing Sunnis and Shiites to live together is like forcing oil and water to mix - it aint going to be stable for long.

Middle Eastern governments, with one notable exception, fall into this category. That said, we see old photos of Afghanistan and Iran with women with uncovered heads and high heels. The states may have been authoritarian, but Islamism didn't always run the show either.

We moved out into the country once. Rented a large place. Plenty of room around. Nothing but cows and horses around. Neighbor put in 6 chicken houses near us and ran them very poorly. He also liked to stand near our property and shoot guns for hours on weekends so he wouldn't bother his elderly neighbor on the other side of him. But at this point, I find I really miss that place. Lol.

You just never know, ya know?

The plan is to save up enough money to buy land and build a soundproof home. I'm amazed they haven't been cited yet. It's a 1500.00 fine. The guy down the road was cited for the same.

That's the only way power changes hands in places that aren't democratic republics. Such power vacuums typically allow for a new ruler that's the toughest SOB who beat the others...with the best or worst intentions.Despite whatever was happening in Britain in terms of monarchical overreach, they at least were experimenting with degrees of self rule.And frankly, I think these are big city problems. If you get far enough out there, anywhere, you'll find self-rule as things are taken care of locally.
