Gun Thread: Post-Texas MoMe Discussion & Analysis [Weasel]

Texas-Flag-Map - scaled.jpg

As mentioned last week, I was arriving home from the 4th Annual Texas MoMe just about the time the Gun Thread went up, so I didn't have much of a chance to review the proceedings. Let's take care of that now, shall we?

I have one word to describe the TXMoMe. Holy Shit.

I don't know how it's possible, but it just keeps getting better each year. Every time I think we've finally reached Peak MoMe, Ben Had raises the bar - and not just a little, but a lot. Like you can't even see the bar anymore. At the rate it's going, I suspect next year we're going to have a flight demonstration by the Blue Angels or something. Texas hospitality is amazing, and Ben Had is triple amazing.

First a comment on Moron Meetups in general. Every single one I have attended has offered participants as much or as little opportunity to engage others as they like. Seriously. I know we have a lot of introverted lurkers among us, and a fair number of people at these events spend as much time simply people-watching as they do dancing naked and singing with lampshades on their heads. If you are at all MoMe curious, then you owe it to yourself to attend one. If you enjoy this site, then you will love attending a MoMe. It's like potato chips - try it once and you're hooked! Honest!

And a yuuuge thank you to our hosts Rancher Bob and Cow Horse Queen for graciously inviting 60 or so Morons to their beautiful ranch for the weekend. Also, a big thanks to their "next door" neighbor, Dr. Bob for allowing us to use his manicured ranch for the rifle portion of the festivities. Again, incredibly gracious and generous people.

Moving along to shooting and stuff...

The TXMoMe is renowned for shoooting and this year was no exception, with separate handgun and rifle ranges available for all to use. First the handgun portion; everyone's pals and all around good guys Eromero and Jim Sunk New Dawn did an amazing job running the short range for plain ol' plinking and a number of practice drills. Many Horde members brought their own personal weapons and ammo for others to try, with several people shooting for the first time. A great time was had by all! Special thanks to Panhandler for bringing a literal car load of weapons for everyone to shoot. Panhandler's collection for the weekend included a 1909 Luger, a Smith & Wesson Model 41, a remarkable Hi-Standard Supermatic Citation target pistol in .22LR, and an incredible and original M1D Garand Sniper rifle that was a huge hit, among others.

Did I mention the machine gun? No? Did I not mention the machine gun? Yep, an actual honest-to-God Browning M1919, belt-fed .30 caliber machine gun was available and a number of people enjoyed taking their turn at the trigger. Is there anything better than the sound of automatic weapons fire on a beautiful Texas afternoon?

m1919 stock scaled.jpg
M1919 (stock photo)

About 15 attendees were kind enough to listen to me ramble for a couple of hours on Friday at Dr. Bob's place for an introductory mid-range rifle clinic. Dr. Bob made one of his guest houses available for the morning classroom portion which included topics on gear, ballistics, optics and generally all of the myriad factors involved in shooting at longer range. Frankly, I'd have been perfectly happy sitting on the porch overlooking the countryside all day, but after my antics in front of the white board, it was time for lunch. I've never met Nurse ratched in person, and all I can say is SMOOCH!! Thank you so much! The lovely and talented Nurse sent a smoked salmon - one that her sons caught and she later brined and smoked - to us for lunch. Holy crap was that ever delicious! Ben Had showed up with the salmon and all the fixin's just as I was wrapping up my remarks, and after a delightful lunch the class adjourned to the rifle range to engage targets from 100 to 500 yards. I'm here to tell you we have some real shooters among us!! Again, Jim Sunk New Dawn was present for all the rifle business and was a huge help building the targets and running the firing line. Thank you, Jim!

I'm hoping to improve on my little presentation next year, and thank you all for being my guinea pigs and great sports in general as I found my way along this time!

I'm certain I'm leaving out several names and a lot of weapons from the weekend that I should have included above. If you attended the TXMoMe, please give us your thoughts in the comments below!

*******

It occurs to me we haven't had much in the way of actual gun stuff recently here on the Ol' Gun Thread. Sorry about that!! Hmmm... here's an idea!

Adopt an Orphan!

model 10 scaled.jpg
Surplus S&W Model 10

This is a Smith & Wesson Model 10-5 made in about 1971 and delivered to the Victoria Australia PD. Several years ago Bud's Gun Shop purchased these as surplus and offered them for sale for under $300. Not being able to resist buying guns in general and Smith & Wesson revolvers in particular, I ordered one online. When ordering, you weren't guaranteed a particular gun, but rather simply one of the batch and the condition of the revolvers varied significantly. As is the case with most police surplus weapons, they look a little rough from years of use but many times have been fired very little and this one is no exception. It came with original S&W grips which were pretty tired, so I replaced those with the Hogue Combat grips which are much more comfy.

Why did I buy this gun? I don't know. Just because, I suppose. I will tell you it's a tight shooter and I'm not too worried about messing up the finish. Do you have a gun like this? Sort of an ugly orphan that isn't going to win a beauty contest but is a lot of fun to shoot? Some people keep a gun like this in their glove compartment or tackle box for that very reason. Do you have an ugly orphan?

The Next Generation of Shooters

Here is a great story on a new generation of shooters - youngsters who have been raised to ignore the nonsense talking points of the left by embracing firearms and the shooting sports. In a time when our 2nd Amendment rights are under constant attack, it's refreshing to see that some kids are being introduced to firearms and shooting. A big h/t to our friend SMH for sending this along. Thanks!!

A few weeks ago we talked about introducing new shooters of all ages to firearms and shooting, and I asked you all to make an effort to find someone who isn't already a gun owner and take them to the range. Thought I'd forgotten your little Gun Thread homework assignment, didn't you?

You there - in the back trying to be inconspicuous - how's that coming along? Ask yourself this; if you aren't going to introduce new people to firearms in a positive way, who do you think will? Do you want your message to be heard, or that of the lunatic gun-grabbers?

******

Please note the new and improved gmail account morongunthread at gmail dot com. An informal Gun Thread archive can be found HERE. If you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff offline, just send us a note and we'll do our best to answer. If you care to share the story of your favorite firearm, send a picture with your nic and tell us what you sadly lost in the tragic canoe accident. If you would like to remain completely anonymous, just say so. Lurkers are always welcome!

That's it for this week - have you been to the range?

Maybe the 22 Magnum.

And the .243.

Coupla 1911's.

But not much more than that.

19 I tried like hell to make it to Texas this time 'round. Next year for sure.

I am one of them inter-verts you hear about. Hell, I go full-on wallflower at office parties, with people I know and like, and see every day. I believe part of it is that I have little in common with them aside from trivial things and work things.

but I've been to two CO meetups, and had a great time. it's weird for me, but I love meeting good people like the Horde.

I want to see some of the other meetups too. I considered the recent Ohio one, but that would have been a longer drive.

She is gonna be happy, she was shooting the 12 and it was heavy to carry and punched a bit with Turkey loads.

I was so proud of her when they had one of those walkouts at school, she stayed in class and told everyone " I love my second amendment.

She turns 16 this month.

34 Dang--I wish I had a Mome gun story! I didn't get in until dinner time on Friday, and, of course, spent Saturday socializing with the AMAZING Morons who attended.

However, I was encouraged to try out the machine gun, and ended up sharing a round with WDS and Bebe. Those ladies are a hoot!

OMG the machine gun was very fast but really fun (there are other things in life like that!). I'm soooooglad I did it!

I treated everyone to a view of my ass when I got on the ground to shoot. I can't imagine the horror. I hope none who watched needs therapy as a result.

35 I am looking forward to going to Texas next year and maybe bring something along with me. (Nudge nudge wink wink)
As I posted a couple of weeks ago I just acquired a NYC Premise handgun permit. About 2 weeks after that I bought my first ever firearm, a Sig Sauer P226 RX Legion. Yes, it might be a little much for a first gun but at my age my collecting years will be limited (unless I win the lottery) so I might as well get what I want.
Took it to the range and put a hundred down range. I will say I did much better with the iron sights than with the red dot. I think I have to zero that in a bit more.
Looking forward to putting many more through this gun.
Next up rifle / shotgun permit and when I get that a decision on what I will buy.

37 Because of idiotic CA gun lawz, Weasel, answer is "no" to having a nice older surplus revolver. J and G, AIM, various places have had them for great prices over the years I've been a gun nut, but because the older models aren't on the "roster", no-go.

Of course I do have a few nice older revolvers, but two of them are kinda valuable and I don't shoot 'em much - the one whose photo you ran here way back, and a slightly less valuable Colt Magnum Carry snub. My Model 66 [original, not from the new "Classic" line] is my main revolver shooter, has been shot quite a bit.

Just the normal brief indoor handgun range shoot this past week, 9mm from the XD, but happy to report my striker retention pin replacement was successful [even looks better than the original, got it recessed into frame just right].

42 On a shitty note I got a letter from the Cali DOJ that my current purchase is on hold for 30 days at least. They don't tell you why.

It says I may or may not have similar characteristics with someone who is prohibited from owning a gun. And if that is determined they will refer law enforcement to me !

There is absolutely no chance that I have anything on my record. I haven't had a traffic ticket in 10 years and have bought numerous guns in past years.

The gun shop said they are doing this bullshit to all kinds of people.

California is dead, it's over for rights here.

66 Got to the range today for the first time since the MoMe. Clear, light breeze and 74 degrees - Fun! Worked with a couple of 9s but spent most of the time with an Artillery Luger - heavy trigger and long pull, hard to keep on target. I pick up a Panzer Arms (Turkey) BP12 tomorrow. Will have a range report next week on how a bullpup 12 gauge handles and its practicality for home use.

Hey Weasel, I found a club close to me that has a monthly 500 yard F Class match. I'm going to try to get out and observe a couple of matches and in the meantime work up a load for the Schultz & Larsen with the 155 Palma SMKs. I think that might work better than the 168s for my slow twist.

116 Against all previous advice here, I went and watched HBO's Wokemen, because I'm a long-time fan of the The Watchmen.

That's why someone shouldn't watch it. Alan Moore has been a long-time left-wing crank, but he wrote a major viewpoint character as a political reactionary, and even made him sympathetic, if disturbed, and ends the comic series as the "hero" who absolutely refused to compromise.

The news series thinks: Hey, reactionary -> White supremacy. And some of Rorschach's iconic monologues are laced with racism and spouted by this army of White power fanatics that have risen up, (as almost a copy of Gotham's Joker craze) as a Rorschach army. Also, without any indication of how this army would know what Rorschach said in private conversations before being turned into a pool by Dr. Manhattan.

Anyway, the series opens up with a Nazi-type raid on a black neighborhood in Tulsa in 1921. So it's featuring very prominently one of the most horrible racial incidents in American history. You can look up the Tulsa Race Riots.

And that's just the start of the problems. It shows just a version of the aftermath of what happened to the prosperous black neighborhood of Greenwood.

If you follow up on it, later, you learn it wasn't racist whites who just decided to chase middle-class blacks out of "Black Wall Street" (which it once was called).

You can learn that after the lynching of a white young man who said he did't mean to shoot a prominent Tulsan, a black newspaper editor ran an opinion that if whites are lynching whites, then black people need to protect black people against the police should a black man be arrested.

There was an incident where a young black men was arrested for assaulting a white female (who never consented to pressing charges). A white rabble did show up to demand the police to release the young man for lynching, but after the last police chief lost his job on the prior lynching, the new one was determined against the crowd. They moved the young man to a county facility, but some black veterans of WWI showed up to the city jail with guns to protect the young man. And it seems that somehow the idea that the young man wasn't there anymore turned into stories that he'd already been lynched. Meanwhile, whites seeing the black vets showing up with guns went home (and tried to raid a nearby armory) to get their guns. Later an exchange of fire left 10 white and 2 black Tulsans dead.

The official record suggests that throughout the conflict, until Greenwood was destroyed, there were exchanges of gunfire on both sides. It's called a "massacre" because when the smoke cleared quite a few more black people were dead than whites. However, interestingly enough, during the occupation by the national guard, only a white person was killed when he refused to stop when ordered to do so.

It's a terrible time in history. Such that Oklahoma has tried to cover up their "national disgrace" for several decades. And while I'm glad to learn about it, learning how it came about, combined with the show's almost approved McCarthyism about Rorschach Army, definitely gives credence to the idea that the show is very much anti-conservative-as-White-supremacists centered.

135 @56 Almost twenty years ago, I got to spend an evening with a Mateba Unica 6, .357
The guy wanted a thousand for it. I liked its "handling" a thousand worth, but since they had gone off our market at that time, I quailed at that price, fearing that any little part need would lay it up. I regret that. Wish I'd bought it.

With a medium-length barrel, the feel as it fired just made you look at it in amazement. A nice slow even push, no snap at all, and the whole frame stayed exactly where you started. Sight acquisition for the next shot was instantaneous; an order of magnitude better than a merely well-balanced .357.
I have not tried the Chiappa because the guys in my club who bring one have the shortest barrel, and in the mean time I've just been in the right place to be offered a couple of nice revolvers in that size range, so have not been in the market. If I were suddenly in need of a .357 revolver, I would line one up with a four-and-a-fraction barrel and try it, before any other model.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 27, 2019 07:47 PM (8ZmvG)

136 I have an ugly orphan, a S and W model 10-8. It's another police turn-in I picked up a few years ago. Looks like it has led a hard life but I doubt it got used much. I wanted it partly for the history, partly out of curiosity, partly because Ed McGivern used them, and partly as a project gun. I have a DVD of Jerry Miculek on how to polish and tighten a model 10. Haven't tried that yet.

BTW, it is a decent shooter with standard ammo but does better with cast bullet reloads using .358 bullets.

145 I have an ex cop Smith and Wesson. It is marked as a 14-3, from the 70s. Target trigger, target hammer, worn but servicable target grips. However... it has a 4 inch standard barrel instead of the 6 inch the specs call for. Nor is it the 4 inch heavy barrel that was an option. Mystery...
It is marked UMBC police, which I believe is University of Maryland Baltimore Campus.
It has holster wear, and has been carried much, but like many cop guns, as not been shot much.
I inherited this one from my dad. I routinely shoot this at 50 yards...

The cute harmless little white girl adopted by black parents is a "good little white girl". Also, Don Jonson's character is a "good white". Even Tim Blake Nelson's character trying to sniff out the white supremacists with the pictures and eye responses seems to be a "good white". (However, the question "Are you now or have you ever been affiliated with" is the part that I was calling SJW-approved "McCarthyism")

I'm wondering what in that scene you're referring to. I think part of that scene is just to make the happy face which is supposed to visually associate this series with Moore's Watchmen.

190 Our club had a swap meet today and it reflects the politics in Virginia. Usually, there are a lot of firearms and reloading gear along with other gun-related items. Most members are Virginia residents so sales can be done privately. Out of state members use the owner of the pro shop, an FFL, to make a purchase. No BS 'loop hole', of course. The Commonwealth has an election in a couple of weeks and the anti-gun groups are dumping big bucks to sway the election. If the Demshits get control they will try to pass laws against private sales between residents or even passing on guns to family members. It meant there were fewer guns and reloading tools at the meet since folks were holding onto their items more than usual.

I hate politicians generally. They exist to interfere with our rights. I REALLY hate these out of state groups, Soros and Bloomberg among many others, who use money to destroy our country.

Booing is the norm [which I've actually always chosen to interpret as feisty, if ill-mannered, expression of American freedom, including that of mocking or criticizing our most powerful officials, to their faces].

Just curious.

I do not know any of your secrets, but I expect you have many stories to tell.

You were the hostess with the mostest. You and your friends know how to put on a party! What a great time. Meeting some of the people, whose comments I've admired for years, was wonderful. Add the discussions, and the stories with Hrothgar on the roads of Dallas.

The only thing I seemed to have missed was singing Happy Birthday and the dancing late Saturday night.

My wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Feb of this year. Had a Whipple operation in April and spent the next 2 months in hospital. Been back for more surgeries due to complications and started chemo this June. Let's just say 2019 sucks.

Can't remember exactly how this came about but Ben Had was the instigator, IIRC. She put together getting a T-shirt for my wife that was signed by many of the attendees at the TxMoMe, as well as proxy signatures from many of you here that did not attend.

Message on T- shirt read:

My Husband
Comments at AOSHQ
I Have Chemo Brain
He Has NO Excuse

Well, Wife just opened her package Ben Had mailed to her from the TxMoMe and was like, WTF? Now mind you she doesn't do AOS, but knows how much I do. She could not believe she had received gifts from the Horde and was quite moved. I have the mascara on my shirt to prove it.

It was funny to hear read out the names on the T-shirt. She recognized several names from me boring her with comments from the Horde. Included in the package was a lovely bracelet from Jewells. It will match the one we got from her earlier.

I've always shared the love and heartfelt sentiments from you guys and she knows that you're special one-of-a-kind people.

320 309 I am way late but I have a question. I started building a 2nd AR and the nitrided barrel I bought is just a tiny bit too short or tight for a Clymer Go gauge. The lugs start to rotate but won't go all the way into lockup. It will close pretty easily on a 62gr NATO marked cartridge. Should I just shoot it in? I'm thinking it's only a thousandths short.

I don't know the answer. I'd be worried about overpressure. It headspaces on the shoulder and the bullet jump (or jam) shouldn't make a difference. Hopefully one of the people with more AR building experience will chime in. I am often full of shit.

Just guessing here, but it may be the result of a 5.56/223 difference where both the gauge and barrel are within spec but at the precise length where the two calibers differ.

Range time? YES!! Youngest son and I went this week. He shoots better than I ever will - this trip we shot various AR platforms. My rifle wasn't quite right so son completely stripped it down right there, took a couple of file strokes on a piece I didn't see, slapped it back together and all was well.

Took him about 90 secs. That gunnersmate training comes in handy.

Went a second time alone and shot 5 or 6 CZ 9mms. I'm in the market for one and I wanted to evaluate a few for my EDC. I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to the Phantom but I want to shoot it a bit more before the purchase.

As I understand it, that wouldn't make any difference as you are just moving the barrel extension where the lockup occurs, not changing the distance from the barrel lugs to the shoulder. Shims are for getting the barrel nut alignment that you seek rather than changing the headspace.

Are the barrel and gauge both the same caliber?

Both are marked 5.56.

I emailed my question to the vendor and they said they would shoot it in if it were them. A few singles, then a mag dump, then check again. And check again after a couple of hundred rounds.

Real cartridges lock up easily as I noted.

410 BTW, here is the vendors response to my query

Every now and then (with any manufacturer) we can initially think there is a problem. In almost every case, we find that it is within spec, but needs a little cleaning or break in. Your inclination to "just fire it" is exactly what I do here in house. I fire it, clean the chamber, fire it, clean the chamber, and so on. I usually do that with one round in only each time for three or four rounds. Then I test with two rounds, and then a full mag. I am hesitant to rely only on the gauge, like they say, I'm from Missouri... you have to "Show Me". At any rate, I do suggest firing it. Clean the chamber with a chamber brush first. A little grit in the chamber can give a misleading result with the gauge. If it is truly a short chamber, it should not fire, just click each time, even after cleaning.

474 Grump928(c),

If the barrel was a ordinary chrome-moly barrel, you could ream out the chamber a bit more with a finish reamer. But, no go on either nitride or chrome lined barrels as these will wreck the reamer.

If you are not getting lockup then do not shoot the rifle as too short headspace is not a good idea in semi-autos because of the risk of out of battery and pressure spikes if things like bullet setback occur.

Few things, did you remove the ejector and extractor before using the headspace gage. Headspace should only be checked with those things removed. Did you clean the locking lugs thoroughly? Are there any burrs around the locking lugs or chamber area?
Use a light and dental mirrors or a borescope to check. Even shipping grease around the chamber is enough to screw up your headspace readings.

If you truly have short headspace, I recommend that you get another stripped AR bolt (or one that is not stripped) and try it with your barrel. These are cheaper than barrels and try somewhere like CDNN Sports or Delta Tactical for good prices on stripped bolts. Primary Arms is another good source at times.

If you are around a store that has AR components, then you might be able to try quite a few of them to find one with perfect headspace.

What might have happened is something called tolerance stacking which is primarily due to machine tooling wear (or lack thereof). Estimates are that roughly 1/30 or so AR bolt/barrel combos will either be too long or short due to differences in dimensions (while still being in spec) between the bolt and barrel combo. The easiest fix is generally trying a bolt until you get one that fits.

Lots of ammo is manufactured about 10 thou under SAAMI spec. That puts it at Field Gauge spec (Go plus 10 thou). Lets you chamber the round when the chamber is somewhat fouled.

i should be able to be there next year, *IF* i can find a co-driver here in SoCal.

if i load up the truck with toys, i really don't want to either have them in the truck, or a motel room, overnight between here there. i'm assuming secure storage is available on site.

I'm guessing most people take them into their hotel at night. Might take some advance planning to work something out. Would love to meet you!

494 Here's the conclusion I draw from the TxMOME. I have never been around a group of people who are my imaginary friends in the computer and my real friends, nay family in meatspace. Different people but all on the same page so to speak. Professions/callings and etc are many, same as say a Mensa gathering, but not as many freaks or lefties. At the end of the evening some of them would be screaming, crying, or fighting. So now who's smart? Mensans or morons?

495 Good grief. Mrs. DIG is watching 90-day fiance stuff and this dumbshit woman married an 'Omar' from Syria. She basically is rejecting US culture but wants to get a spousal visa for the dude. They said they plan to move to Syria. I say good riddance to the bitch.

504 Son N**** the Valiant, Air Force Intel Officer, flies into the Middle East. Two weeks later, al Baghdadi is mort. Coincidence?

Posted by: Charles the Simple
My compliments to your son, and secret congratulations to you.Our kids and a lot of their friends are in "a related field," and I often wonder at news events. You know damned well, even if he wasn't up to his hips in it, he was part of the show.

He could tell you, of course. But then he'd have to kill you.
I know how it goes. I'm so over "So how's work?"

Yes, but most in other states won't take this shit.

Makes me sad that it may be time to fall back, to AZ or ID. It's a shame I was born here over 50 years ago and have enjoyed the best of hunting and fishing, blv it or not there is still lots of open country, but we are under siege.
