Revealed: Nuclear Blast in Russia Was Caused by Reactor Meltdown of Superweapon Named "Skyfall"

The nuclear-powered cruise missile had fallen into the sea during a flight test.

They left it sitting on the sea-floor for a year. Which... okay, whatever, it's Russia.

Only a year later did they attempt to recover it.

Their recovery efforts did not go as one might have hoped. The reactor exploded and has flooded the areas around it -- including big towns -- with radiation.

Russia covered up the deadly nuclear reactor explosion in August during the salvage at sea of one of Vladimir Putin's new superweapons, a nuclear-powered cruise missile called Skyfall, a senior State Department official disclosed.

The reactor exploded Aug. 8 off the coast of the northern Russian town of Nenoska, killing seven Russians on a barge in the White Sea as they were overseeing the recovery of a sunken Skyfall. The missile had been sitting on the seafloor for about year after a failed flight test, said State Department official Thomas G. DiNanno.

"The explosion was caused by the Skyfall experiencing a criticality accident, an uncontrolled nuclear reaction that released a burst of radiation while Russian personnel retrieved it from the seafloor," Mr. DiNanno said in an interview with The Washington Times.

It gets worse: Experts say that approximately $150,000 worth of FaceBook ads accidentally blew up the entire democracy of the United States as well

Reactors can't turn into bombs. They can remain fissile and create a lot of heat, but you don't get the chain-reaction explosion, just a thermal blast throwing radioactive stuff all over.

Russian weapon names are rarely used. I'm thinking "Skyfall" is the NATO code work, like Shipwreck, Sunburn, etc.

There's a code system where all the items in a particular series use the same letter prefix. That's how you get names like Fishbed and Fulcrum. Not what the Russians actually call them.

A friend suggested to me that something strange was going on because of a big ammo explosion in Russia not long ago.

I then pointed out that ammo dumps blow up there about every six months, give or take. This is because:

1. Russia never throws old ammo away, and it becomes unstable, and
2. Most Russians are drunk most of the time.

Russia is trying to get rid of the ammo, which of course also gives it another opportunity to blow up when the drunks trying to disarm it set it off.

Point of pedantry. One does not spread radiation. One spreads radioactive materials or particles or radioactivity, which then radiate whatever radiation they radiate.

Radiation can be waves (gamma, xray, etc.) or high-energy particles (alpha, beta (electrons)).

Well, the ones killed in the blast sure are, but probably don't care.

Radiation sickness is not as deadly as movies like "Chernobyl" suggest.

It's also hard to tell just how bad long-term exposure is because everything in Russia (and the Ukraine) is heavily polluted and most of them are raging alcoholics. Kind of a contest to see what they'll die of first.

My understanding is that the water was for the spent fuel rods, and the concern was never criticality, but getting hot and offgassing. Spent rods have a lot of nasty byproducts that would have gone into the wind. So it would have looked more like Chernobyl with the fire.

From what I can get from the article, it's nuclear-powered, with an optional nuclear warhead (in the XLE model). So the reactor is part of the propulsion system, but not necessarily the warhead.

Nuclear aircraft propulsion was studied in the US during the cold war (imagine a B-52 that could loiter on station basically forever), but was eventually abandoned as completely fucking bugnuts bonkers.

Ah yes, the carrier that's power plant ran so rough that it appeared to be burning coal.

They sent it to Syria accompanied by two (2) ocean-going tugs, in case it's engines quit completely. The reason they have two, is that on a previous sortie, one of the tugs broke after the carrier broke. So they have to bring a spare for the spare.

While off the coast of Syria, they lost 10 percent of their aircraft to flying accidents. Because they're Russia.

I think the missile is designed to be air-cooled, which it gets from high speed. When it went into the water, deep cold water did the job, but bringing it up probably caused an issue since the gap between pulling it out of the cold water and slapping some coolant around it could have caused an explosion.

Radiation sickness is not as deadly as movies like "Chernobyl" suggest.

It's
also hard to tell just how bad long-term exposure is because everything
in Russia (and the Ukraine) is heavily polluted and most of them are
raging alcoholics. Kind of a contest to see what they'll die of first.

--

I just finished "Midnight in Chernobyl." You're right about the alcoholics. When all you have to live for is vodka, things aren't so great in your country. There were people there in Pripyat who even believed drinking vodka would protect them from the radiation.

I also read that the deadliness of the radiation is determined by several factors. Gamma being the worst type of exposure if I remember correctly? The victims at Chernobyl were exposed to alpha and beta, as well. It all depended on the time, the type and how the contact was made...breathing, touching, etc.

296 Radiation sickness is not as deadly as movies like "Chernobyl" suggest.

It depends on the dosage. TV series like "Chernobyl" made clear that the dosage the firefighters and plant personnel got was deadly. The dosage the cleanup crew wasn't so bad on account that, by then, the Soviets knew what they were up against (and had mostly quit lying to everyone about it), and prepared accordingly.

Guess I'll watch Live and Let Die in his honor.

But speaking of Sir Roger, if you have COZI TV on your cable package, they show The Saint every day.

And in a non-Bond role, the underrated ffolkes, co-starring James Mason and Anthony Perkins is well worth watching. It's an action film about terrorists led by Perkins taking over two North Sea oil rigs.

idk, I pictured a big fireworks going off for a month, spewing (technical term) radioactive material around wherever the wind and water would take it. Spent fuel rods can still "melt down"? I think -- which I guess is not "criticality" (is that the nuclear explosion part? yeah, not that, uncontained melt down is bad enough, dirty bomb effect)

453 If it hasn't been said... this weapon was nuclear powered and "could" carry a nuclear warhead(s).

Nuclear power implies unlimited range. In theory one could launch it today and nuke somebody in a couple of years, assuming the weapon could "just fly around in circles, undetected or over friendly territory or whatnot."

Many weapons guru's have scratched their heads over this. As in "why?"

Bonus info: the US looked into this back in the 60's and basically said, yea... no... this sucks. I don't believe we ever killed anyone though.

BTW: this is one of Putin's pet projects, like the "doomsday" torpedo that is also nuke powered and carries a couple dozen megaton warhead designed to create tidal waves to destroy costal cities.

There are a couple other Putin designed "super weapons" in the pipeline over in commie land. He's a real engineer that one.

495 Nuclear powered soviet subs had the problem of run away reactors in the early days - like, a lot. Cooled by seawater, the resulting salt caused lots of issues and the cooling of rods was, um, inefficient, to day the least. Not saying its a good idea, but,

We are building a missile shield against ICBMs.

So, a Nuclear powered CRUISE missile, could be launched from Siberia, fly over crap Russian territory, and threaten the US by flying under the radar.

Current cruise missiles don't have the range to do that.

Interesting that a major component is Ankara's reaffirmation of the Adana agreement [21 years ago] that settled an earlier case of Kurdish hijinks in that area, abetted by Damascus because who knows why/hey let's piss off a hugely superior NATO member.

Posted by: Anna Puma

The speed of sound in room temperature ocean water is 1531 m/s, so if you go faster than that, you're technically supersonic.

Of course that is 2,976.026 knots, so pretty impossible.

They probably don't mean that, and are saying they're going over 767 mph in the water, thoroughly mixing their mediums and measurements.

Posted by: Sharkman at October 22, 2019 07:21 PM (g7BLK)

513 If you want to worry about Russian nuclear dumps in the ocean, consider that the Russian government has officially *admitted* (meaning numbers could be higher) that at the end of the Soviet Union, they decommissioned 14 nuclear submarines and sunk them into the Barents sea, with their reactors intact; they also sank 19 ships loaded up with nuclear waste in the same general location; and they dumped 17,000 nuclear waste containers into the ocean there, because what the hell, why not. There were already 14 fully loaded reactors down there.

It's all still down there. Probably far too deteriorated now for anyone to be able to recover it without making even more of a mess.

My very limited understanding is you create a cavitation bubble in front of the thing then basically fly through that bubble you continually create. So you're slamming a path of air through the water, then flying that path.

Sound does travel underwater. Ask any of some of the most respected crewmembers of our submarine force, the sonarpersons.

At 25°C, the speed of sound in distilled water is 1498 m/s. In sea water, 1531 m/s. So, under those conditions, anything traveling faster than 1531 m/s is, by definition, supersonic.

537 I read the theory of the high speed torpedo on some tech site a while back. If I remember the general idea, it was that some high powered heat source in the torpedo would create a layer of superheated air in front of it and along the sides, so that the torpedo could move through the water with no drag at all. I didn't really see how you could ever get enough energy to make that work, but I believe that was the theory.

And we did that one [entered it] for the same reasons we got out of it - our interests were served. Of course some russki cheating on the margins on that one, too, but nothing important.

so every once in a while, I go over to the hard core right wing web sites to read them for a while, mostly for entertainment.

it is the same thing I do when I go over to the hard core left wing sites like Daily Kos or HuffPost, or these days, CNN.

It is the first time in months I have been at any of those sites. Most of them are writing about the collapse is certain, it's only a matter of time until Schumer/fan situation, they say.

I saw one phrase attributed to someone I never heard of: war is just the extension of politics.

The Democrats, their Press Tools, and the Deep State are all syncing up to create chaos, and soon, according to them.

Before I join the revolution, however, I am going to enjoy this cup of freshly brewed coffee I just poured. If it is going to Schumer so soon, I want an afternoon refresher first.

You'd make more than enough sound to be detected easily at any speed approaching 50 knots - the forming of bubbles on the hull casing creates an pretty big sonic noise. The faster you go underwater, the greater the heat generated by your motion in the surrounding water, creating another signature. The ocean has it limits as far as detection goes.

549 So this was a plutonium fueled ramjet then.
Uranium fission's after absorbing slow moving neutrons. You need a moderator such as heavy water or graphite to slow the neutrons. That adds a lot of weight to a missile. Plutonium fission's from fast neutrons and that makes it hard to make a bomb. One has to implode one very fast to very high density to get decent yield before it blows itself apart.

So the Russian's missile has a critical plutonium mass putting out lots of energy for the engine when it falls into the ocean. Water gets into the engine and the light water absorbs the neutrons and quenches the chain reaction. The missile sits quietly on the ocean floor.
Russian salvage guys lift the missile out of the ocean and the water runs out.........
