I've been on four full jury trials. They always picked me. I never had the nerve to try to get out of it. The most infuriating episode was the last. I was one seat away from being an alternate and it looked like I was scot free. Then this miserable bitch who'd been selected suddenly pulled an hysterical and clearly fake fit and was excused. So I was next.

This is true. All that matters is the political calculations at play. If he thinks he's better off keeping Trump (at this juncture, I think that IS the calculation), then he will.
If he thinks he can get away with convicting, then he will. The Senate GOP will be MORE than happy to cooperate, if given the go-ahead. I think that is why he's said he'd drag a Senate trial out for a long time - not because it harms Democrats, but because it provides time to grind down the President's popularity enough to potentially make conviction look like a survivable proposition.

Which of course is why Schiff is doing all this behind closed doors. If the Trump is impeached which is by no means a sure thing the Senate will done in public with Trump having lawyers with subpoena powers and they will be able to cross examine. All in public.
I'm not seeing that being real damaging to Trump.

Impeachment is a political process. The whole last 3 years has been an attempt to grind Trump's popularity to the point for the republican senators had political cover to vote for it. Hell, they think the evangelicals would jump at the chance for president Pence and are shocked more support hasn't bled off.

Trump hired Turtle's wife as Sec of Transportation because she is utterly corrupt and has relatives profiting mightily from Chinese trade that Elaine Chao can orchestrate on the regulation and policy side.
Chao gets to keep the money flowing if Turtle keeps the judges flowing.

If the GOP is in the process of taking out somebody who is not actually interested in how much ground he's conceding to the libs, there is no use for them. There never was (from 2007 on) any use for them.
When they cajoled us with "pick the most conservative candidate who can appeal to the middle (the most MOR)" and gave us McCain and Romney as "next up" candidates, it made some sense. Especially for the united goal of keeping the Dems from winning.
If the Republicans can just cede the first ever removal of a President on the a theory about interpreting crimes in just such an astral alignment, that party deserves to die.
And when they say "But Democrats will WIN!" We can just show the road of betrayal and say they should be okay with that--ESPECIALLY the NeverTrumpers who say VOTE WITH THE DEMS until the GOP's only fighter is gone.
