THE QUOTES OF THE DAY

Quote I

"The hydro-technical facility was self-constructed and, I believe, all rules I can and cannot think of were violated," Yuri Lapshin, the head of the Krasnoyarsk regional government

Quote II

I stand here before you as a proud parent, son, obviously a member of this community,' You see my name, but yet you see a lot of people behind me and the commitment, especially from my mom, about caring for other people and being a part of a community that matters.Michael Jordan

Quote III

“The truth is anyone who says they definitively know what is causing it doesn’t know what they’re talking about,” “It’s a complex problem with no easy answers so far.”Ursula Whiteside, a researcher with the University of Washington

Quote IV

“It’s getting kind of hot. I’m telling you, Hillary Clinton is playing a very dangerous game. I do not want someone of her stature to legitimate these attacks against anybody. If you’ve got real evidence, come forward with it. But if you’re just going to smear people casually on podcasts, you are playing right into the Russians’ hands.”Van Jones

Quote V

“Do not run the water when you brush your teeth, only wash with filled washing machines, only buy washing machines that don’t use so much water, use a pot when you ate watering plants in your garden. And pee in the shower in the morning,”Frode Hult

If it isn't Florida Man or Woman in the news, it's Florida Caterpillar. These fuzzy creatures might look cute and harmless, but in fact they pack a big punch. The venomous puss caterpillar appears to be back in Florida for its seasonal return.

A Florida woman documented her scary and painful encounter on Facebook.

Bri Oteri was in Dade City, Florida, said in the post she leaned against a wooden fence and felt her wrist start to burn after coming in contact with the puss caterpillar.

Oteri said, “It felt like fire ants in that moment. I looked down and saw this fuzzy thing moving across the wood.”

The woman was checked out by an EMT but symptoms increased later in the day and her husband took her to the ER.

“I was watching my son practice and all of a sudden I couldn’t breathe. I thought I was going to pass out, and then came the pain. In my chest.. in my entire right arm, radiating from my wrist all throughout my arm and shoulder,” Oteri said. “The pain was so excruciating I was hysterically crying in the hospital pleading for the doctors and nurses to help me. Morphine didn’t even touch the pain.”

Reason #417 why you shouldn't have a Face Book account.

PHOENIX – A police sergeant is suing the Phoenix Police Department in federal court, claiming the agency violated his First Amendment rights by trying to discipline him for his Facebook posts that disparaged Muslims and illegal immigrants.

Sgt. Juan Hernandez shared 11 memes or “news articles” that say Muslims are criminals or refer to immigrants as illegal. Hernandez’s Facebook posts were part of a database by the Plain View Project that examined the accounts of 2,900 officers from eight U.S. police departments, azcentral.com reported.

Since its publication in June, the departments have faced backlash, including in Phoenix. At the time, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said that she pulled some officers from enforcement duties, but she didn’t specify whom. Moreover, the chief said her agency would be investigating those officers.

According to the lawsuit, the department’s Professional Standards Bureau’s “draft investigation” would sustain that Hernandez violated the Police Department’s policy. As a result, Hernandez would be suspended between 40 to 240 hours without pay or be demoted or terminated, the lawsuit says.

As a parent you attempt to do whatever to keep them safe. Unless you're a selfish hypocrite by the name of Shannon Watts.

While violent crime in the United States continues to decline, technology continues to try and find ways to combat the current violence we have in this country. For better or worse, bad things can happen almost anywhere and at any time.

So, it’s not surprising that a handful of companies have sprung up to meet the demand for using this tech to protect what matters most to us, our children.

Lori Alhadeff is haunted by the fact that she did not send her 14-year-old daughter to school with a bulletproof backpack. The mother of three had wanted to buy one but never got around to it. By Feb. 14, 2018, it was too late. Her first child, Alyssa, was fatally shot trying to hide under a classroom table at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. “I wish to this day that I did give that protection to Alyssa. It could have saved her life,” Alhadeff says. “Obviously, I regret that.”

Yes, a "Hate Incident". You will be made to care and enjoy.

A transgender woman says she is a victim of ‘transphobic’ discrimination after being snubbed for job as a female porn star – because she still has a penis

Ria Cooper, 25, who became Britain’s youngest trans person when she transitioned 10 years ago, encountered the photographer after deciding to embark on a career in the sex industry.

She says the anonymous individual messaged her saying he wanted to have sex on camera then sell the resulting porno to make some quick cash. But little did he know Ria was transgender and when he found out she still has male reproductive organs he immediately retracted the offer.

In messages exchanged over WhatsApp, the photographer bluntly proclaimed he couldn’t work with her because ‘she has a c**k’.

One of the problems with elected officials? They think they are Economists.

Los Angeles lawmakers on Tuesday took the first step toward a minimum wage for tens of thousands of Uber and Lyft drivers, approving a study of how the law would work and how it would be enforced.

The City Council also requested an independent study of how much Uber and Lyft drivers earn in L.A., and how much they spend on gas, insurance and other operating costs.

The vote comes less than a week after City Council President Herb Wesson, who is running for a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, introduced a motion asking for a draft law to mandate a $15 hourly wage for drivers and $15 per hour to cover their expenses.

Lawmakers approved a softer version Tuesday, asking city analysts to study an hourly minimum wage, “with the goal of a $30 minimum.”

They plan on building 1,000 cars per week. But will they? Tesla is given permission to build cars in China.

Tesla has been given the green light to start manufacturing its cars in China.

The electric carmaker, which is run by billionaire Elon Musk, is building a $2bn (£1.5bn) factory in the eastern city of Shanghai.

Tesla plans to build at least 1,000 of its Model 3s each week in the Chinese factory, which could be up and running within weeks.

The new factory will give Tesla access to China, which is the world's biggest car market.

It would also help the company avoid higher import tariffs that are imposed on cars made in the US.

When he checked out the status of the vehicle, he found that it had been reported stolen on Wednesday.

Stewart was arrested for vehicle theft and possession of methamphetamine and booked into the South Placer Jail.

Marathons don't take that much time. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

CHICAGO —
A Boston man disarmed a robber on a train in Chicago on Sunday before running in the city’s marathon.

Jean Paul LaPierre, 54, was on a CTA Blue Line train when he stepped off and asked another commuter why marathoners seemed to be rushing for the doors, WGN-TV reported.

He said he was told there was another man on the train robbing commuters.

LaPierre got back on the train and confronted the robber. Video captured of the incident shows LaPierre struggling with the man and pulling a gun from his hands.

“I’m a boxer. I’ll break your head in one punch,” he said in the video.

LaPierre said he grew up boxing, which prepared him for the encounter, the station reported.

At least 12 white supremacists have been arrested on allegations of plotting, threatening or carrying out anti-Semitic attacks in the U.S. since the massacre at a Pittsburgh synagogue nearly one year ago, a Jewish civil rights group reported Sunday.

The ADL also counted three additional 2019 cases in which individuals were arrested for targeting Jews but weren't deemed to be white supremacists. Two were motivated by Islamist extremist ideology, the organization said.

Butthead dog snuck into her room, snuck the cookie off her desk and then went prancing around the house til somebody noticed him being...prancy. The keystone cop chase that ensued knocked a bunch of furniture over, and left us with some bruises.

Miraculously, the dog didn't eat the cookie. But daughter threw it away because, "I'm not eating his spit." She's being in a snit ever since, not that I really blame her.

So thank you for making me smile!!

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc.

The whole thing is disturbing as Hell. One thing you can say is that depression among Teens must be rising. Psychological depression or clinical depression is probably the one common denominator in most suicides.
Why people are that deeply depressed is the key question.

To your point, perhaps participation in Social media (or perhaps exclusiong from participation or notice from your so called "friends") leads to more clinical depression about teenagers. They are not the most stable group (psychologically) around.
Full of hormones pushing you to mature, and a mass of conflicting signals from the larger society about how you should think and behave.
Tough times for them, really.

156 Moki-

I bought a painted rock from a little girl at a yard sale this past summer.

Its flat and about 3 inches around and painted with 2 shades of brown paint.

It looks like a big cookie.

I keep it in the garage so I don't wake up in the middle of the night and see it and say Heeyyyyyyy !

157 Grist Magazine had the usual thumb-sucking article about how "climate activists" fight the overwhelming depression caused by the fact that gerbil warbeling will soon kill us all. If you're not seriously depressed, there's something wrong with you, you see.

One of the contributors lives in Minnesota, and stated: "Minnesota has the fastest-warming winters in the country."

Wha? I thought Alaska had the fastest warming winters in the country! No wait, it was Montana! No wait, Tennessee! No wait, Texas! No wait, Hawaii!

Needless to say, environmentalists never observe that someplace is warming slower than overage.

What makes this particularly hilarious is that Minnesota had a brutally cold winter last year.

She should learn from the taxpayer-funded Oregon Global Warming Commission. In low-snow years, the Commission puts a statement up on its webpage that Mt. Hood will soon be without snow in the winter. In high-snow years, they quietly delete that statement from their webpage.

do you keep the power cord plugged in? or run the computer off the cord until the battery's run down, and then recharge. or it doesn't matter.

no one seems to have an absolute answer, which i find weird. battery technology is the oldest tech in the computer and goes back to the 18th century, yet there doesn't seem to be a universally understood best use.

278 here's a question: what's the best practice on a laptop to maximize the battery?

Keeping it plugged in isn't the best practice because Li batteries aren't made to be kept at 100% all of the time.

Full cycle is not a best practice because Li only gets a few hundred full cycles.

So if possible manage your batter so that it runs around 80%.

I unplug my notebook computer when its in sleep mode, toss it in the vault as usual OPSEC and then plug it back in when ready to use.

One of my Dell notebooks had that bloated battery problem, used another computer for a month or so, and noticed that the battery out gassed and was back to its usual dimensions during that interval. So I regularly unplug when not in use.

309 Los Angeles lawmakers on Tuesday took the first step toward a minimum wage for tens of thousands of Uber and Lyft drivers

Mickey Kaus noted something about the California law that was just passed trying to make Uber and Lyft drivers into employees - the law also quite deliberately makes it almost impossible to be a freelance writer in California.

If you write more than 35 freelance submissions a year for a single publisher, you are treated as a employee of that publisher. Write a weekly gardening column for the local newspaper? You're now an employee of the newspaper. Or the newspaper stops using your stuff, which is far more likely.

The results are predictable:

"I have heard from clients that they're just going to avoid working with California freelancers," freelance entertainment writer Fred Topel says (Topel chose not to name those clients in case they change their minds). THR has additionally reviewed several job notices in transcription, blogging and SEO writing that have explicitly stated that California freelancers will not be considered.

A commenter noted that some of these freelancers will doubtless move out of California to other states, where they will continue voting for the sort of people who dreamed up this law.

You'd have to be kinda nutty to be a freelance writer living in California in the first place.

Since you can, almost by definition, live anywhere you want if you have that gig, why the hell would you choose California?

There's a reason why the old-time pulp writers tended to move to places like Mexico or Cuba, and it wasn't because of the weather. It's 'cause the living was cheap.

You're welcome, and it was a true honor and pleasure to meet you there, too!

And you'll be pleased to know too, that the Hospitality you there enjoyed, is actually Standard Operating Procedure in these parts.

Yes, even in Greater Houston, too.

Ever seen 7.5 million people pull together as one? That's the approximate population of the Houston Metro area, covering more than Harris County, alone.

Hurricane Harvey, 2017. No one gave a damn about race or station in life, but everyone simply did what they could do, and damned if they didn't do it well.

Compare to the thousands of cases of looting in New Orleans ref: Hurricane Katrina.

Here in the Houston area, the Harris County D.A. (then a Law & Order Republican, not this crime coddling *$)# of a leftist Dem we have now), filed looting charges against a mere 54 cases.

54 cases out of a population much larger than Houston's 3.5 mil.

Those bonds are stronger still in the rural areas of Texas. Bonds of love, neighborliness, trust, respect, work and more.

Texans are family, wherever in the world we may be found.

A LINUX install is not trivial, but still relatively quite. I resurrected a $5 32 bit laptop but had to search for a distro that would no it (never found a MINT one that worked). If it is almost any 64 bit platform a MINT install the ticket, and you can dual boot leaving the old Win install available. If you're the least bit handy, you can add a new (extra) drive and install LINUX on that but retain the ability to boot from either OS.

393 A LINUX install is not trivial, but still relatively quite.
Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at October 20, 2019 11:38 PM (BiNEL)

If I can do it, anyone here can. I am not a computer geek, but I am persistent, and learn to fix what I have. There was a 32-bit version on Linux Mint 17 that I put on my desktop in AZ. I ended up replacing it with the 64-bit version when I could not find a 32-bit version of brave browser.

From memory, the steps are: download the ISO file from a reputable Linux site; verify the file at a file verifying site; burn the ISO to a DVD ROM, or copy to a thumb drive; boot the target machine to the chosen medium; run Mint from the removable medium, and then select: install in partition, preserving previous OS allowing dual boot, or wipe and install Mint as a standalone OS. I have always chosen the latter, as the old Windows installs were either corrupt, or not mine.

All these steps have ample tutorials on line.

460 I may have started a fight on facebutt, and wisely walked away because it's late. A few thoughts to get down:

I think Scott Adams is correct that there are "two movies" played out of the context created by the people watching. In 2017 I endured a Sam Harris podcast, where he brought up the latest Trump "scandal", and he would explain his least-charitable interpretation of of the event with previous events and their least-charitable interpretations. It is scary to see someone getting stuck in a rut, and especially a man who seems to not know how to get angry.

These two-movie scenarios (Scott Adams) are naturally occurring, between two honest sides, but politics can preserve them in amber indefinitely. TDS will not have a reliable cure until after 2024. (Cue CGP Grey talking about internet arguments.)

If our principles and character can be measured by our ability to give grudging praise to people we don't like, or criticism to people we do like, then political hacks are far more poisonous than normal liars. A man who is bit by a zombie might go on to bite three more people, so his obligation to self-preservation is higher on z-day.

I am pro-Trump but have had a very strong aversion to Trump cheerleaders, as best as I can identify them.

We have deep culture-level ideas that can make us angry, or sad, or a warm fuzzy. The brain is good at post-hoc rationalizations, so it is better define how you feel. Example: I will not apologies for buying meat and gas every week, so
Swedish Greta can fuck off. The TDS affected will not use this to cure themselves, because they are childish, dull, and lazy.

I was a Ted Cruz guy. Trump got my vote because he was Not Hillary, and my expectations of him were very low...all he had to do was be Not Hillary. I am pleased to say he has exceeded my low expectations and I plan on voting for him willingly and not grudgingly a year from November.

On the other hand, there is a farcebook acquaintance I have that cannot seem to admit that PDT has done anything positive. He's stuck on "but muy bumpstock!!!" Seriously, he touts the fact that Trump has made more gun control laws than Obummer. Telling him that bumpstocks were going to go away either way and doing so by EO rather than legislation was the better of bad choices (think about it, what else would have been in the legislation) is a losing proposition. I've since given up.

498 Good Morning ONT Morons; today is Monday, October 21, 2019. On this day in 1879 Thomas Edison applied for a patent for his design for an incandescent light bulb. They lasted until 2007 when the idiots in congress passed a law banning them for the so-called Global Warming scam. Then in 2011 they passed a law denying funds to enforce the ban. In 2007 Democrats controlled everything. In 2011 The Republicans controlled the House. But the bulb manufacturers said too late, we have retooled and moved on. So legally, we could go back to the old bulbs but the bulb makers are making too much money off the new bulbs.

It depends on where you use them. If you use them in a place that is turned off and on a lot they will not last very long. If you use them in a location that comes on and stays on for a long time they will last. I have some sun-activated flood lights on my front porch that come on when the sun goes down and off when it comes back up. They are the new florescent type encased in a 'floodlight' body. They last forever and a day. I haven't seen any LED floodlights, however I would not trust them because they are 'electronic' and more susceptible to voltage surges from lightning strikes. Which is also a problem. We have a LOT of Lightning strikes around here.

We replaced all of the fluorescent lights in our VFW with LED's that fit into the existing fixture. A simple fix that took our electrician about 20 hours to pull off.

Those LED's do save a bunch of $$$.

Our light fixtures had 4 bulbs in them When we started the project we were putting 4 led's into the fixtures to replace the fluorescent ones. Turned out to be way too bright and we settled on 2 bulbs per fixture.

The Big Govt Ruling Class is coming after you. Every Progressive running for the Dem Nom wants to add thousands of laws and regulations to break your back into submission.

560 Was anyone in those tornados around Dallas last night? It look like it got real bad.

Yep. Mother's street was hit, took the tops off very large live oaks in the front yard, destroyed potted plants, slammed outdoor furniture against house, large limbs in the street, fortunately not on the roof.

There was an ad hoc block party to clear the streets and assess damage. People were looking out for each other.

BiL in another part of Dallas texted us with photos of the damage of his knocked down fence and a tree that took out his next door neighbor's home. They lost power.

564 Betoff said its no longer sufficient for Americans not to be racist at his Rally Against Fear in Texas. Instead, he said, they must be anti-racist

Is he really giving us the Green Light to take-out the Leftists who believe that Islam is a race, that blacks are inferior and need Affirmative Action, that only Latinos can be illegal aliens, and that there is some thing as White Privilege because nothing else explains why all other ethnicities can't compare?

Those racists?

Good thing we had "anti-racist" practice at the TxMoMe.

There was a big DOD contract years ago to transfer that data to newer storage media. Most likely it is still ongoing.

566 Waiting impatiently for the dentist office to answer their phone. Been icing and taking advil since Saturday morning due to a wisdom tooth that has made its presence more than known to me. After today, that tooth may be given his own name! Dentist's office hours are 7-4, yet no one answers the phone at 7:05 or 7:14. Arg!

572 One of my cats got into my box of tootsie roll pops. She chewed up the box then started dragging the pops out and batting them around the floor. I dumped them into a big plastic bowl and there was a bunch of liquid in the bottom. Cat spit? I suspect she chewed on more than the box.
