Mid-Morning Art Thread [Kris]

Repin Nicholas II.jpg

Nicholas II Of Russia
Ilya Repin

Ilya Repin started his career as a cartographer in military school. He then studied art under various icon painters. After a few fits and starts, he finally entered the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg where his work began to focus on social issues and The Struggle. His political views would ebb and flow over the years, but he eventually took a job as a professor in the Imperial Academy in the early 1890s and seemed to have a friendly relationship with the upper classes.

This work was painted on the occasion of Nicholas II’s coronation as Czar of All the Russias after the sudden death of his father. Every source I’ve read says that Nicholas was totally unprepared for rule and that everyone in the imperial circles knew it, including Nicholas himself and both his parents. The new Czar accepted it as a divine calling however, as his destiny and duty. It would be a disaster.

The painting is life size, about 8x5. The Czar is front and center, in the vast space of his new throne room. He isn’t in his coronation robes or crown, however, he’s in military dress uniform. The mood is relaxed. Nicholas is young. He is smiling and his eyes look friendly and joyful. His arms are folded gently in front of him, not on his hips like Holbein’s famous portrait of Henry VIII. He also doesn’t project superiority like the portrait of Louis XIV. Except for the throne in the background, it looks like a portrait of a young gentleman officer in any given army. The size of the work denotes importance but Nicholas stares the viewer straight in the eye. He isn’t looking down at us nor ignoring us all together. If one didn’t know the rest of the story, he looks like a decent man, and in his private life, he was.

It is the setting of the portrait that is important here. The space surrounding him is vast. He stands in the very center of the room and the hazy background creates a sense of space. This room is so large that the walls faze into the distance. This room announces the imperial majesty of this person, and, for me, it symbolizes the massiveness of his empire. It is also a metaphor for the scale of the job ahead of him. The room and the job dwarf him.

Light shines in the windows behind him, perhaps symbolizing the bright new day ahead for Russia with its new, young emperor. But the windows are shaded, creating bright streaks across the floor that lead to the throne, not the figure. The throne is in the distant left, slightly faded and blurred. Even out of focus, it still dominates the scene. It looms in the background. The responsibilities of the imperial office overwhelmed Nicholas, and though he tried to manage it, he did not have the skills needed to rule nor did he develop them as time went on.

Imperial artists get to know their patrons pretty well and their art can be very perceptive. An excellent example is Goya’s group portrait of the Spanish royal family. I believe Repin wanted Nicholas look amiable and hopeful, but some details seem apprehensive. Nicholas was a weak-willed reactionary who listened to the wrong people and made the same mistakes over and over and over. The consequences destroyed his family and his country.

18 There's also a neat thing going on behind Nicki's head that resembles a halo-like device. I knew the Byzantine emperors were also titled as one of the Apostles and living saints. After the fall of Constantinople, Russia took on the mantle of the New Rome, but I don't know if the Czars adopted that title. I don't believe in coincidences in art, but I didn't want to sate something that I wasn't sure of. I'll leave the Horde Council to discuss this idea amongst themselves.

26 If you've watched some of the Victoria series, a major part of the story is how hard her Uncle Leopold worked to unify the ruling families of Europe, in the interest of peace and stabilit (and his own family running everything) Leopold was German by birth, English by marriage and title, and ended up as Emperor of Belgium.

Hard to criticize him too much, his plan actually worked right up til 1914, long after he was dead. And he would say that without his guidance, the Europeans finally did what he was always worried they were going to do.

Czar means Caesar
The Muscovite 3rd Rome was all about it. Interestingly, their adoption of Eastern Orthodox Christianity and the Cyrillic alphabet plus a habit of eschewing classical writings for the Russian vernacular cut them off from the West and removed a common lexicon, the educated westerner being educated in the the language, stories and philosophy of Greece and Rome. Post Mongol, they were less a 3rd Rome than a 2nd Byzantium losing a lot of Rome in the translation through Asia Minor.

70 I read a plausible theory once that the tragic course of the 20th century was set when Alexander II, a competent and decent reformist tsar, was assassinated in 1881. That destroyed the prospect for gradual reform rather than violent revolution in Russia.

And plainly, without Lenin, Hitler would never have risen to power. Seeing the charnel house of revutionary Russia, German burghers knew what was in store for them if the German Communist Party seized power. With the Weimar government hanging by a thread, many--enough--concluded that only one man was hard enough to stop them.

95 But I don't know of the Czar's religious stature in the culture of this era so I left it out.
The Czar would have been the head of the Church like a Caesar or a Byzantine Emperor. Or hell, even an English monarch post Henry VIII. The Muscovite Emperors moved the Metropolitan (eastern pope, sorta) to Moscow to solidify power there. Red Square, aka the Kremlin was part fortress, part pentagon, part Vatican.

Feudalism is pretty decentralized. An absolute monarchy might be a better analog(single head, state administered through vast bureaucracy).

Communism is the Roman Empire before they stopped pretending about the degree of despotism. Big man in charge, rubber-stamp legislature, secret police, army does its job and is the regular police, BS about a "republic" to keep the plebs happy, the citizens/Party members have it good, and the Emperor's favorite bureaucrats are living it up.

Feudalism was the answer to a failure of monarchy post Charlemagne, however, I don't doubt that the Russian aristocrats were landed and acted as feudal lords under the Czar. The current oligarchs have replaced them culturally. The only real way to run vast no-technology, no commuication farms in the steppe would have been via a local lord. The czar was hardly managing those except via decree. The Russians were about as advanced as the "dark" ages and haven't come that far since.

Speaking of oligarchs, Fuckerberg is in front of congress pretending to not be an oligarch and tool of China today.

Her persistence on this idea led Nicholas to turn away from parliamentary reforms...

-----
Because the plan was already in place to Impeach Trump for obstruction of justice.

Their deep state allies had assured them that they would block Trump from releasing the complaint or the transcript though lies about threats to national security, etc.
Trick Trump into waiting for their "sanitizer" process, manipulating his loyalty to country, so that he takes the blame for their delay while they promise and promise it'll be scrubbed by next week for sure.
And the only "transcript" we were ever to be allowed was Scheiff's fiction.
On that, they fan the flames into a bonfire.

Note how quickly they got the Senate to vote to"demand" Trump release the complaint?

This was all supposed to be voted out of the House by now so it could die in the Senate just before Thanksgiving at exactly 52 votes

The Dems get their political club, the GOPe get a permanently weakened Trump--win, win for uniparty.

Wise king/emperors went along with this.

The rise of the Western nation-state can be seen in the history of the attempts of the various Kings (English, French, Spanish) to consolidate power and subdue their respective aristocracies. As this process was successful, it led to the rise of large, centralized governments that served themselves before they serve the nation.

It was an inevitable process because of the constancy of War. Every time there was a war against a foreign enemy, the King could raise a large army to fight that war, and simultaneously use it to dispose of any less powerful rivals inside his own country. Of all the European monarchies, the English monarchy was the one that never went all the way to seizing absolute control of everything. But Oliver Cromwell made up for that oversight.

252 We've got a flat one in our camper that works great, and a pole-mounted one on the house that works really well. It all depends on where you are in relation to the signal, of course.

I think there are $40 DVR boxes that allow you to record to hard drives, too.

I know there's a good website where you enter your location and it will give you a pretty accurate response on which channels you can expect to receive. I'll see if I can track it down.

WUWT will post pieces from that school of thought from time to time; it's an interesting insight into that side of the issue. Right now, the enviro-left is splitting into two main factions - the majority are all with Greta Thornburg, "WE WILL ALL DIE IN 12 YEARS UNLESS CAPITALISM IS ABOLISHED NOW!!!" and a distinct minority who are saying "you know we believe in all this global warming stuff, but going at it the way Greta wants to go at it is nuts, and is gonna destroy our entire movement."

so the article comes from that school of enviro-leftism. Of course the response from the Greta devotees is "YOU'RE A WITCH TOO! BURN THE WITCH!!! BUUURRRNNN!!!"

263

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 23, 2019 10:32 AM (Kpl3J)

The rise of absolutism typically depended on eliminating the upper aristocracy(large dukes and such) by enlisting the help of the lower aristocracy(who become bureaucrats and officers of the state), as well as weakening or controlling the clergy. Typically this latter effort involved conflict with the Catholic Church, but Spain found a way around it via the Inquisition(an Inquisition is subordinate to the secular monarch).

That's sort of where we were. We had an older one that I rigged up for the house, but when it's time to replace it I'm going to go with the King brand. I know a couple of people who have them and they swear by them. I think there are omni and unidirectional models, and (assuming it works in your application) you can save a few bucks if you don't buy the mounting attachment and just put it on top of a piece of conduit.

FWIW, those cheap flat ones work great for what they are. If you're close enough to the signals I wouldn't doubt if one of those on the wall would do a fine job. Might be worth a try before spending $100.

I reject that the founders, having gone through what they went through, and created what they created, would be all, let your freak flag fly with regards to impeachment.

You need to specify real crimes, not we think this guys a dick so we are going to get rid of him.

That simply won't fly.

People get caught up on the words high crime, and cast their gaze to heaven and say, what did they mean, what did they mean.

They meant you need to have committed an actual serious crime and not some ticky tack shit.

I mean jay walkings a statutory crime, right, could you impeach a President for jay walking?

According to some, sure.

But that would be patently ridiculous and absurd.

The problem is that the Supremes stuck their foot in it.

Andrew Johnson was being impeached by the House, for firing someone in his administration that Congress had passed a law that he could not fire.

It went to Court, and the Supremes said it was not their place to define what a high crime or misdemeanor was, ie that what Crime was a high crime, was up to the House and Senate.

But they wrote it poorly, and Congress had taken that to mean that impeachment is a purely political process.

Note, Johnson had 11 charges against him, ONE of which was breaking that laws. He went to trial in the Senate, and over a period of a couple of weeks was tried on 3 of those counts. All three missed convicting him by one vote, so the Senate then decided to just skip the rest.

So, I agree that the Constitution says it must be a crime of some type, but the Supremes and Congress decided a clearly written phrase, means nothing.

How this will play out in the Modern Court, will be interesting.

438 I come from a long line of white male oppressors.

My Viking forefathers sailed down a kicked the port-frog's asses and settled in Normandy (North-man-dy).

Then sailed over to England as part of Bishop Odo's crew (and is part of the Bayeux tapestry) where they kicked assorted Saxons and Angles asses, and became very minor royalty.

We actually have a real coat of arms. Not a cool one though. 3 little birds. (though it probably inspired Bob Marley ).

On my Mom's side, we had a lieutenant under Wellington's command, who fought at Waterloo.

And, this is kinda cool, we have his portrait that was painted at that time.

Then many years passed, and it was all horse-thieves and gamblers after that.

What I noticed in mine was that there would be some fairly well-off guy with a will, then his son would be ok, then his kid would be a "laborer," then his kid ok, then a well off guy with a good will, then the process repeats. It's like the old I fight so my son can trade so that his son can paint or some such. Then the "painter" really just worked the fields because they'd blown the family fortune and lost at poker, whores, and moonshine.

448 As always, the art work chosen for this site constantly pleases the eye. I am a great admirer of Repin and the subtle psychological elements he puts in all of his portraits... I was just in St. Petersburg 10 days ago and probably stood in the exact spot that Nicholas is in... while the above analysis is really spot on, the room itself is only about 1/10th shown. This throne room was the focal point of power and authority within the entire Hermitage/Winter Palace. The room is way over the top in white and gold and high ceiling and chandeliers and windows....and you enter the room directly opposite in direct line to the throne that is shown... it is a processional entrance and an intimidating feeling, be it an empty room or one filled with tens or hundreds of even a thousand people... the only thing you constantly look at is the throne and if you were allowed to approach it and get near it and be recognized, you were made a person... to see him, young, alone, away from the throne, out of the direct line of perspective is truly a revealing psychological perspective that Repin gave to this tragic man and family. Thank you again for posting the image, always a joy to see something that makes one think out of the box.

Posted by: nicholas at October 23, 2019 02:57 PM (R8pP2)

449 I know where he's standing in that portrait: the large throne room at the Winter Palace. Last summer my wife and I took a trip to St. Petersburg and got to tour the palace in a private group tour. I got to stand in that spot. There's an elaborate decoration on the ceiling that is matched exactly by the inlay pattern on the floor. It's magnificent.
