Brexit Deal Reached, But Questions About Whether Parliament Will Pass It

Walking papers?

Negotiators from the U.K. and EU reached a draft Brexit deal in 11th-hour talks Thursday, although there are serious doubts that the agreement will be approved by U.K. lawmakers back in Westminster.

Sterling rose on news after the U.K. made concessions over the Irish border, an issue that had proven to be the biggest obstacle to a deal....

The deal calls for allowing Northern Ireland -- a part of the UK, of course, but also entangled in a "no borders" treaty with the Republic of Ireland, which is part of the EU -- to be bound by some EU trade rules. The no-border policy would continue.

This sets up a complicated and difficult day for the U.K. Parliament on Saturday. There are doubts a deal will be approved in Westminster, with opposition parties already criticizing it.

The problem is Northern Ireland. The biggest Northern Ireland party, the DUP, is against any deal that treats it differently than the rest of the UK:

The DUP said in a statement earlier Thursday that it was unhappy with the proposed customs and consent arrangements, which were designed to give Northern Ireland a say over its relationship with the EU post-Brexit. The DUP has repeatedly opposed any plans that would see it treated differently from the U.K. after Brexit.

I guess we'll see.

9 Now that the queen has stated oh-so-politely that Brexit is happening on October 31, it will pass. The question is: what was the deal and what was in it? Is it a hard exit without strings attached? Because I have my doubts.

If the major powers of the EU (France and Germany) were falling over themselves trying to do some sort of trade deal with IRAN, over the objections of the USA, I don't see how the minor stumbling blocks that have stalled Brexit for two years+ could not have been taken care of much sooner.

I know the answer - they only care about the things that they care about. Anything else is 'insurmountable'.

+++++++++++++
This is one I don't get. The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland have had an open-border agreement since the Troubles were resolved and well before the Schengen Area was formed and the various cross-border EU stuff.

The Irish border has been used as a cudgel against the UK by the EU for some time. The UK and Ireland have an agreement, and the EU has been holding its power to impose border controls on behalf of its member states (e.g., Ireland) as a cudgel against Brexit since neither Ireland wants a hard border reimposed.

And yet, oddly, the Irish (Republican) look at the spectre of a hard border being the UK's fault, not the EU's, - when the open border between the Irelands is pre-EU law that would remain the same after reversion if not for EU recalcitrance.

I wonder how much getting the EU to play nice on the Irish border is going to cost the UK. The way this is written, it applies only to Northern Ireland. I wonder if the Irish are angling for (and the UK are willing to acquiesce to) secession and reunification with the entire island become Republican.

Right now the DUP is the Tories' majority in Parliament and they're not on board with this. Farage is taking a hard line on this but he's not going to be able to keep all his Brexit Party on-side.

We'll see if the Surrender Bill plotters try something else if this deal crashes and burns in Commons and the UK is looking at a 'hard Brexit' on October 31.

If he said, "we'll kill this through parliamentary procedure and the trial will never happen" then she might try to whip up enough votes to get it done.

A trial, though, would be a disaster for the Dems. Too much would come out. I think this might be McConnell in "war turtle" mode letting Nancy know that she should very, *very* carefully consider her next actions.

Unless something really major comes up, I can't see it, no. But the news organizations like CNN and MSNBC, NYT, WaPo, etc all need the distraction to focus on instead of... well anything that helps Trump or hurts their side. I don't honestly know what they will do.

I think they saw this has having real legs but Trump kicked the feet out from under them right away. Now its just random lunacy like Schiff's idiotic performance art, or Swallwell claiming that Trump signed a confession.
