Long time lurker. AoS is my go to site every morning. Love the Pet
Thread. This is my three year old rescue kitty Coco. (daughter named her
as in Coco Chanell) with her buddy a three year old dwarf pug named Happy. Happy is a service dog as well as a therapy dog. He spends many days at the Reno
airport along with 29 other teams in Paws 4 Passengers. - Intruder Driver.

Great work ID. How wonderful that you folks spend that much time assisting people. Pretty cool that you rescued a cat as well. They appear to be super-duper friends. Thanks for supporting the AoSHQ.

No luck so far though.

On a side note Winston, I do appreciate your patience with this dork Cob. Quite the the adventure you have going on there with Lover Boy.

I don’t know if these guys qualify as pets or not. A few years back, the XO gave me about ten pots of mums for my birthday (September). I clumped them tightly around a big pot, then enclosed them with a couple rows of landscaping bricks. Come spring, it turned out about half of them had survived the winter. About that time, I noticed a whole flock of newly hostaed preying mantises crawling around the big central pot. Evidently, these two decided the mums made a terrific home and stayed all summer. They’d come out when I watered the mums, looking a little miffed that they’d gotten soaked. A few time, I deliberately watered the mums just to see them. I never named them, but figured I was housing and feeding them. (All the garden bugs they could catch and eat.) They were a lot of fun for the summer months, but vanished with the cold weather. I keep looking, but no other mantises have taken up residence. - Captain Josepha Sabin.

If they are critters, you like them and take the time to share with us, they will make the AoS Pet Thread. What a shame they or their ancestors never returned. You have to love insects who eat insects.

4dogs.jpg

Another installment from the great white north, where our leader not only wears blackface, but black arms, torso & legs too.

Our pack has appeared in this hallowed column before & I thought it may be of interest to share our experience with our four rescues. We previously had pure bred dogs & were unsure of what to expect with our first rescue, for example would the dog come with baggage requiring extra care or attention? I suppose that happens with some animals but it’s not been the case with any of ours.

We got Candi, our first in 2015. She has a classic Jack Russell look & was found in an abandoned shed in Kentucky, on a property that had been repossessed by the bank. She was skittish & understandably slow to trust initially but has turned into a loveable little sweetheart.

Molly, our second, also in 2015, is a Jack Russell mixed with who knows what from Ontario. She sits funny, has a cute little underbite, ears that flip inside out when she runs & a face like a meerkat. The original owners both worked so she spent most days alone in a bathroom & then was too energetic for them when they returned after work. When we heard the story of this puppy being alone for much of her short life I thought she may have issues but from day one she’s been the happiest dog we’ve ever had & my companion when I putter around the property. Molly would have made a great farm dog because she has endless energy & loves to work.

Sally, a street dog, also from Kentucky, came to us in 2016. Since she’s mostly beagle & cannot resist a scent she has to be on leash when outside which isn’t often because she prefers to sleep 20 hours a day. When we take her for a walk she can be hard to drag away from a good sniff because she splays her legs out with her belly near the ground making her hard to move like a sumo wrestler, hence her nickname Sumo-Sally. Street dog habits are hard to break. When sally poops she scouts around for a rare bit of concrete instead of the abundance of grass or forest like the others.

Our most recent addition was Maggie in 2018. She’s a PappiJack (Papillon/Jack mix) purchased as a puppy by an elderly man who, soon after, passed away. Despite being half the size of the others she thinks she’s twice as big & deserves to be the boss. She has giant papillon ears that never flop & looks like a gremlin from the movie. Sometimes she’s the good gremlin, other times the bad one but she always tops the scale on the cuteness meter.

We feel very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place & are glad to share it with these little critters. They truly enrich our lives.

One last thing, I’ve been banned by the Missus from visiting the Jack Russell Terrier Rescue Ontario web site. - Brian

What a great video clip Brian. Thanks for sharing with us. Quite the household you have there. What Missus Brian doesn't know won't hurt her, amirite?

That Deplorable SOB Van Owen here.

This past week my BIL brought home a 6 week old Bull Mastiff puppy. Talk about cute as an (un)speckled pup! She weighs less than my Colt Light Weight Commander right now, but the breeder says she will double in size every two weeks. Dam and Sire are both around 200 lbs, so I believe it!

Hey Deplorable SOB Van Owen please tell your BIL that he has a cute puppeh. How can such a cute little puppeh grow so big. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Our beasts awaiting dinner. Not staged. Minoux (age 13) the asshole (don't touch me) cat. Tibby (age 13) the Tibetan Terrier. Bruno (age the Lab that won't retrieve and hates the water. He just got out of the Cone of Shame recovering from dog ACL surgery. That menagerie is into us for about $5K this year! But, they're worth it. PS: we're full time RV'ers. Love the Pet Thread. Thanks for doing it.

Thanks Dingbat for the photos. Best wishes and speedy recovery for Bruno. And good luck with the rest of the crew.

Fluffy The Terrible. Caught as a young feral in the 'hood in DC. Had a litter soon after we caught her. Placed all the kittens quickly as they were all cuties... She lived at the shop, and became the terror of the area. Rats, mice, sneks(!!) and the occasional bunny. She never tangled with the raccoons, and she tried to figure out the deer.
We closed the shop August a year ago. Living in the city is not kitty safe, so she has transitioned to being an indoor kitty. Her last companion kitty died in the beginning of summer. That was Fang, also caught as a feral, we had had her 17 years, who knew how old she was.
Fluffy is about 6 now...

10 I had never heard that Mastiffs were particularly dim. I am actually surprised that basenji are so far down the list. There is one in the complex here (with a cute brunette owner) and he seems extremely good natured. Of course, good natured does not mean bright, but he seems to keep himself clean, is very outgoing and curious about everything.

12 Benny is halfway through Obedience 1 and is in hunter training. Doing great in both. He is a really great dog. We take him to the farm supply store every weekend (they allow leashed doggehs). He is a furry little rock star at that store. The cashiers call him by name and bring treats for him. Thanks for the thread MH!

15 Apropos of ID's Coco, I too have a kitteh named for Mlle. Chanel-- she's a dilute tortie about 5 years old. My Coco supervises a dude cat (same age as she is) named for Casey Stengel. He may think he can manage a baseball team, but he's under Coco's management. She gets the first dish of cat food, first turn at the kitchen water bowl, etc. He doesn't seem to mind it, though-- I often see them playing or napping together.

16 Hey Horde!!

Well, the dog intelligence list explains why our pup is the way he is. Bullmastiffs are around 147th on the list. He is adorable, but dumb as dirt.

They are great dogs, but unless you are young and have endless energy, they are a handful. After a lab, a Newfoundland and a German Shepherd, this was a huge change.

They must have surveyed only Basenjis that were pursuing post-graduate degrees in canine studies.

Real world Basenjis are extremely bright, groom themselves like cats, and have a great sense of play and adventure. Independent, yes. Dim, absolutely not.

We used to have a white cat. He liked to go to a neighbor's yard and sit under the bird bath waiting for unsuspecting birds. The neighbor would come out to shoo him away and he would mosey into her house through the open door. The neighbor said then he would sit on the couch and light up a cigarette like he owned the place.

35 Holy moly, the cute factor on Benny is what, 13 on a scale of 1 to 10? You now have to get a cat named Eggs.

Dingbat, I'm strongly considering the RV life, although Mrs. Hoser and I are still a decade away (three more kids in the house!). How do the pets handle the travel, and how often do you pack up and git? I love how they are all so patient!
Lover Boy looks strikingly similar to my former pal Lanny. Same colour and so named because his huge whiskers matched him to Lanny McDonald. Lanny was a PITA, including biting my heel in my sleep hard enough to get me to jump up screaming and coming home once missing about half an ear.

36 Update on Baby:

Vet wants to do mastectomy. And spay. And charge $1200.

Doesn't matter whether it's "cancer" we're absolutely not going to put her through chemo.

The lump is on a breast but seems not to be bothering doggy at all-- she's her happy go lucky, though elderly and slower, self. (Got her 13 years ago; she was good-sized then, maybe 6mo to a year old.)

Vet is confident that this is all hormone-related and spay would be to stop hormone production. Mastectomy to remove existing lump, prevent larger growth...

We can handle the cost.

I can't handle the idea of putting her through major surgery at her age.

Recovery will require cone of shame due to large incisions and she'll need constant supervision, limited activity for a few days to a week. (Not an issue as hubby is retired.)

She's been a little unsteady on her feet for over a year now, especially if she gets excited and turns around too quickly. Her paw pads tend to be dry, so she'll easily slip on bare floors. I can't bear the thought of her falling while incisions are still fresh.

We've scheduled the surgery because hubby is in favor-- but it's a month away so there's time to consider all the factors, perhaps cancel.

I remember the article linked here a few weeks ago, about vets not being able to make our pets live forever. Got REALLY dusty in here when I read it.

I know our girl doesn't have a *huge* amount of time left-- no matter what we do or don't do-- and I just hate the thought of her having even more discomfort than she does already.

Damned allergies...

60 Working on arrangements for boarding New Old Dog for one day for son's wedding. The costs are becoming astronomical for a wedding in the park in Dane County, WI. New Old Dog needs four more shots/tests approx $180 for a 24-hour board, plus the board cost. Old Dog can stay at son's house and there are no pet-friendly hotels at peak autumn season. Old Cat will stay by himself for 36-48 hours, but I know he will make me pay -- spiteful peeing frenzy probably.

65 Yay. Pet thread! What beautiful moronimals.

Cat-2 got teeth cleaned this week and anal glands expressed. Most traumatic part was we had to put away the food and water nite before at 10p since she was being put under anesthesia.

Our kittehs are free grange pets. Foods out all day for them to snack on at their leisure. Cat-1 was not pleased to say the least. So I snuck food and water into my bedroom when I went to bed. He was confused about new feeding locale, but adapted quickly.

All the relatives I would trust to stop by to let them out, etc are going with us. I love my neighbors, but I wouldn't trust them with younger children, much less the dogs.

Darnitall, this is only 36-48 hours and our budget is busted. Oh well, it will all work out in the end. Groom's family doesn't really have to do anything but show up and smile. That I can usually manage.

79 Darnitall, I was going to laugh with moki about having a regular dog after high-powered canine brainiacs.

Laughing because New Old Dog is some kind of bulldog and his default mode is to stand foursquare. Took us months to teach 'sit'. He is very gentle except when it comes to cuddles.

New Old Dog has been looking to Old Dog finally to figure out what he is supposed to do. Sweet-natured, but box-o-rocks.

82 Roof kittehs! Hah!

When I was very young, it was fashionable to have cast iron kittens on the roof as some kind of decor. My grandpa told me the cat was struck by lightning and it was paralyzed on the roof forever. Grandpa was rather surprised that I took it literally and was having nightmares about poor cats.

84 Is the dog intelligence rating accurate or do they mix up 'strong willed' with 'not smart?' We took a Great Pyr dog for a friend of a friend who had made a bad choice for guard dog for family living in town. GPs bark to warn predators to STHA. Mia never seemed very bright but she knew what she wanted. 'be outside guarding the critters thats my duty as a GP.' She didn't like heat and would come in the house to sleep in the cool zone on summer days. Then at dusk the switch flipped to on - it was like the old Loony Tunes cartoons with Ralph the sheep dog and the wolf clocking in.

89 I'm not a fan of pugs (I know, right? Just play along). Well. Let me clarify. I kind of feel sad for some pugs, because of the no-neck barely able to breathe thing. But some pugs are actually adorable.

My boss just got a pug for his daughters. It's a boy pup with a brindle coat, and he does not have the overly buggy eyes. So, for the first time, I said to myself: Pug. Maybe a pug would be a nice doggie to join the Mahon Clan.

I really do not like smaller dogs and/or terriers, but I was really impressed with a few Boston Terriers I have met living with families. Small enough to be accepted pretty much anywhere, but really good with the kids, ie, smart enough to get away from excessive affection and good-natured enough to tolerate them without getting silly..

So....Bulldogs third to last on the intelligence list? I think maybe it's stubbornness rather than lack of intelligence that prevents them from learning commands.

It was hilarious to watch my husband try to teach them to STAY, though. Soon as he turned his back and walked away, they were sneaking up behind him. Every. Time. For about 40 times. I see that he needed to keep it up for another 40 to 70 times.

124 It is very difficult for me to have a dog who is not as smart as I think I am. My previous dogs were all smarter than me and for the most part indulged me as the head of household. Having a regular dog who wants to please but can't figure out how to please is a hoot. Silly beast stands there, foursquare, and is just waiting for something he understands. Old Dog has assigned 2yo babysitting to New Old Dog; Old Dog retains 4yo as his own. All babies entering the house belong to Old Dog first.

125 Apropos of ID's Coco, I too have a kitteh named for Mlle.
Posted by: Basement Cat at October 12, 2019 03:21 PM (pPNCa)

I have many times seen one of the more senior males take a role where they eat last, watching over the others. They often sit somewhat apart, again watching the backs of the rest of the group.

I have also seen this job pass from one cat to another, and to one of the more passive and cautious of the boys I had. He had never done that before but when the watcher died, he quickly became the watcher of the others.
