I'm thinking most of them could probably kick my butt.

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1046)

How should White play this position? Be sure to take into consideration all of Black's defensive resources.

Goal: White can obtain a winning position after about > 8 moves
Hint: No matter with rook to use to block the initial threat, the resulting lines are pretty much the same.

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20191005 - Problem 1.jpg
8/prR2B1k/3q2pp/5b2/5p2/8/P5PK/Q7 w - - 0 1

1.Bg8+ Kxg8
2.Qg7#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20191005 - Problem 2.jpg
r4bkr/1pqb1Npn/4n3/p1p1p2B/3pP3/8/PPPBQ2P/2K2R1R w - - 0 1

1. Nh6+ gxh6
2. Bf7+

Not 2.Qg4+ Neg5 3.Bf7+ Kg7 and the quick win slips away)

2...Kg7
3.Bxh6+ Kxh6
4.Qh5+ Kg7
5.Qg6#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20191005 - Problem 3.jpg
5r1k/2R4p/p3p3/BpQ1Pr2/1P1P4/5p2/P4qnP/2R4K w - - 0 1

1.Qe7 R5f7!

The pawn cannot be defended, i.e. 1...Qh4?? 2.Qg7#

So the question is, what rook will you use to block the attack. This choice gives rise to two similar lines, one is just a bit longer than the other. The first line is:

1...R8f7
2.Qxf7 Rxf7
3.Rxf7 Qe1+
4.Rxe1 Nxe1
5.Kg1 Kg8
6.Rd7 Nc2
7.Kf2 Kf8
8.Kxf3 h5
9.Ke4 Na3
10.Rd6 Kf7
11.Rxa6 etc.

If Black defends with the other rook, it's over more quickly:

2.Qxf7 Rxf7
3.Rxf7 Kg8
4.Ra7 Qe1+
5.Rxe1 Nxe1
6.Kg1 Nd3
7.Re7 Nf4
8.Kf2

In either case, it's not a quick mate, but the simplification allows White to snap up the vulnerable black pawns like low-hanging fruit.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

that Gordon Sundland guy who is in the latest Ukraine controversy?

He was in my pledge class at the frat I was in at the UofW.

Didn't keep in touch with him, others in my circle did, and occasionally saw a text about him. He is a good guy pretty much. Also a self-made man all the way. His parents were Holocaust survivors and owned a dry cleaners in West Seattle. He has donated a lot to charities over the years.

4. Qxe6+ (f)

(a) Black is threatened with loss of a rook or mate.
(b) White threatens Qxe6+
(c) Black threatens Qg2#
(d) White prevents mate threat.
(e) Black blocks check.
(f) So Nh4 is premature.

2. Qe7 Qxa2 (protect e6)
3. Rxf8+ Rxf8
4. Qg5+ Kh8 (if Kf7 5. Rc7+ Ke8 Qe7#)
5. Bd8

The threat now is Bf6+ and Black will have to give up the Rook with check and White can bring in his rook from c1.

98 When I despair at the State of the COE, I am always glad to hear that there are Christians in England. This evangelical church apparently started in a pastor's home in 1988 with nine members and now has four campuses and thousands of members. There's not a depth of theology in the "What we believe" section but they obviously believe in a relationship with Christ and the vital value of prayer:

Sadly more like darting them with a birth control vaccine, which will not minimize the numbers moving from other parts on the state. The bambi-ites get very up at arms about a good cull, but as one of the local officials woke to find that a deer broke his picture window and was eating plants in the living room, maybe they will start empathizing with homeowners rather than the students at Princeton.

221 KCMo first allowed limited "special managed hunts" within city limits about 10 years ago.
I got to hunt the first one at Swope Park, where the zoo is. 1,000 acres, but lots of public use and areas. Biggest fear was that someone would arrow a deer, and that it'd cross in front of some women golfers, and die right there.
Sure as shootin', first morning, a guy arrows one on the banks of the Blue, it runs over the golf course, in front of a group of women golfers, and dies in the pond!
The women golfers were thrilled to see it. Never heard another word from anyone about it since.

I hunted in some hills above the Africa zoo area. Weird sensation, being in a tree with a primitive weapon, and hearing baboons hoot and lions roar.

Holy crap:

Bear is a novel by Canadian author Marian Engel, published in 1976. It won the Governor General's Literary Award the same year. It is Engel's fifth novel, and her most famous. The story tells of a lonely librarian in northern Ontario who enters into a sexual relationship with a bear.

Allowing yourself to get schtupped by a bear? That sounds kind of dangerous.

275 Bear is a novel by Canadian author Marian Engel, published in 1976. It won the Governor General's Literary Award the same year. It is Engel's fifth novel, and her most famous. The story tells of a lonely librarian in northern Ontario who enters into a sexual relationship with a bear.

I'm assuming bear does not mean a reformed hairy gay dude.
