The difference is that we're now in more dangerous territory. It is getting to the point where more people actively distrust the government, and increasingly people think the government has become explicitly counter to truth, justice and their interests.

We also strongly support law enforcement because law enforcement is the only way to achieve some semblance of justice here on Earth.

Excellent question. I began to realize how utterly corrupt they were when the FBI outright manufactured hair and fiber evidence and even sent people to be executed on the basis of their falsified results. From memory, not a single one of the guilty ever did a day for their crimes.
The FBI is a political police force, straight up, no different from the KGB or Gestapo other than they haven't gotten around to mass murder except on a few occasions. It should have been shuttered decades ago but apparently they have congress too scared to act. The late Mr. Epstein may have been very useful to them.

Turns out that after the original standoff the FBI sent in undercover agents posing as documentary filmmakers. They stayed with the Bundys for months (IIRC), interviewed them, their friends, etc. They also had an undercover agent in the group of the later standoff (not sure if it was these same documentary people). That agent convinced the group to do some practice shots in an open field during that standoff, filmed it, and then that film was used to justify aggressive intervention (because they are violent, shooting).
That this was going on at the same time the FBO was systematically dropping the ball on the Boston bombers, the Pulse shooter, the Parkland shooter, etc. tells you about the FBI's priorities. Slap down the FBI's enemies (uppity citizens), not America's enemies.

I think we're going to eventually learn of a study that shows statistically that FBI profiles are pretty much a coin flip. They treat profiling like a magical science in TV and movies, but its wrong quite often and based on a lot of presumptions and old presuppositions about humanity and race.

I can see the utility of profiling - including racial profiling - as addressing the likelihood of someone being the offender. Likelihood, but not chiseled into stone certainty.
After all, law enforcement routinely and reflexively profiles on age and sex, and for good reason. They're just playing the odds. But odds are not sacrosanct; sometimes longshots come in. So what they really need is someone to play devil's advocate at each stage of an investigation. (But doing so is probably a good way to get fired.)
