Robert Francis "Blotto" O'Rourke: Hey, I've Got a Great Idea. Let's Pay Government Money to Illegal Marijuana Dealers as "Reparations" .

Beto: Let's pay reparations for non-violent marijuana offenders

Yes, reparations for those who have served jail time for nonviolent marijuana charges.

That means at least dealing -- it has long been virtually impossible to go to jail on mere possession.

It's the latest big idea coming out of Robert Francis O'Rourke's presidential campaign.

[Washington Post] The former congressman from Texas would combine a newly regulated marijuana market with restitution for policies that resulted in lengthy prison time for low-level drug crimes. The goal is to see that those who were harmed by the strict "war on drugs" policies of the past can now benefit from the money made in the marijuana business.

"We need to not only end the prohibition on marijuana but also repair the damage done to the communities of color disproportionately locked up in our criminal justice system or locked out of opportunity because of the War on Drugs," O'Rourke said in a statement.

The plan is on his campaign website and it is worth taking a look at, if for no other reason than to see just how far the left is going in their war on the American taxpayer.

Go home, Furry. You're drunk and high. As usual.

112 Beto is a new york billionaire's son in law. All he has to do in life is keep impressing that princess who's the key to all of Daddy's money. That's his only real job.

He's stupid, he has not a brain in his head. He sees all the adulation coming from the far left, and he's decided "yeah Bro!!! I'm gonna give them everything they want!" And so he goes harder and harder and harder left, because the cheering crowd of radicals wants him to, and he's desperate for their praise.

And that leads to scenes like today, where Beto is calling Chuck Schumer gutless and weak on Gun Control. Ok, well of course Schumer is, but that's the leadership on YOUR side, genius, you really think it's a smart move to make EVERYONE hate you?

133 I grew up seeing the cities fall apart in the 70s. I remember how common it was to see kids from 10 to 20 sitting on milk crates on the corners during the day sucking on the pipe.

Then they would break into houses at night and mug little old ladies for cash.

As the cities fell apart, the people who lived in them (mostly black) demanded tougher laws. The war on drugs was about trying to fix the social problems created by the war on poverty.

But the left has a new plan - isolate themselves from the crime and bad schools they created and get elected by giving shit away.

204 I have a serious problem with this proposal, and it has nothing to do with drug law.

1) The laws against marijuana were not unconstitutional. You can argue that they're bad laws or ineffective laws or immoral laws or laws inappropriate for the federal government to consider as opposed to state governments and you may have a point, but they were *not* unconstitutional.

2) Those who violated those laws and were punished for laws did so and were so *at the time that the laws were in place.*

3) There is grandfathering for *new* restrictions, but not for their repeal.

4) "Reparations" for those convicted of drug crimes - or any other crimes that are no longer crimes because a law was changed or repealed - is an insane idea. It would make the state liable after the fact for any change in law that reduces criminality.

This is absolutely batshit insane and counter to rational legal theory. If the law was unconstitutional then it was always wrong from the moment of incept and in that case you could make an argument for restitution for those victimized by an illegal law. A legal law, though, even if changed later, was still legitimate. No restitution is owed in that case and providing it would only result in no laws ever being repealed again and the only changes to law we would ever see would be those that *increase* criminality - the exact opposite of what we should have in a free society.

Plenty, actually. Price depends on the mileage (more-so than the age). Anything with 200K or more will go for a song. Anything with between 100K-125K will be pricey (in relative terms).

His life consists of going on hunting trips, watching some sports, and then about once a month he ventures out and buys some piece of property for $800,000 if someone tells him he should. And I think he is okay at putting all the checks together each month and putting them in the bank.

Yeah they deliberately limit those, I guess because they didn't trust drivers. Electric Engines don't need time to wind up or build power, they can put it instantly to the wheels. The only way it won't do that is if you intentionally design it not to.

271 It was minus 30 sans wind chill. Some EV owners were lamenting that the range was cut in half or more.

That's the hidden feature of electric cars not mentioned by almost any reviewer or test show.

Every car loses performance and mileage the more weight it has. Your Supercar goes that fast and handles that well because its just you in the car. Add someone else, and its not as good.

But electric cars suffer even more from this. Put passengers in, run the AC, even the radio, put in some luggage or groceries and its a serious reduction in range.

So yeah, MPG in your F-150 goes down from like 7 to 5 when you load it up.

But range in your Tesla goes down precipitously when you put passengers and weight into it, much more than gas powered.

But they don't mention that little bit.

277 The left has this notion that

--Tobacco is "right-wing"
-- Marijuana is "left-wing"

Since their goal is to utterly DESTROY every remnent of old-school conservative all-Amierican culture and replace it with party=approved "radical" "alternative" culture (e.g. Out: Football; In: Women's soccer, etc.), they want to simultaneously BAN and discourage cigarettes in every imaginable way, while PROMOTE and encourage marijuana in every possible way.

They fraudulently frame all this as a "health" issue (when discussing tobacco) abd then flip-flop to a "criminal justice" issue (when discussing marijuana).

The conveniently ignore the fact that marijuana is in many wyas worse for you than tobacco, and also than when you ban or severely restrict anything INCLUDING cigarettes, then there develops an illicit trade in it (as happens in places like prisons and asylums, where there is often an underground economy based on cigarette smuggling).

This has nothing to do with drugs, health or criminal justice reform; it has everything to do with th Culture War, and the left pushing something which they have identified as being part of the leftist spectrum, while banning the "old" American thing they want to replace.

You have a point.

If the federal government were diligent in enforcing the immigration laws, I wouldn't agree, because crime is pervasive, and it can't all be stopped.

But the federal government has not diligently enforced anything, and encourages the lawbreaking to the absolute furthest extent.

Their asses should be held liable. Forget reparations - civil damages awarded by a Court would be sufficient and appropriate. The negligence, nonfeasance and malfeasance rise to the level of culpability, as far as I'm concerned.

Electric Vehicles hide behind Gov Cheese and rebates then overcharge ,pun intended, and under deliver. The behind the scenes costs are as much or more as a regular car.You like them,so,thousands do let them wear adult pants and sell on their actual cost.
Lots of lesser priced electrics are for resale and could make a nice city/town car but please make them pay for their "gas" namely electricity ,that is cheating.\
The AUTONOMOUS shtick is annoying...billions will need to be spent(from Taxpayers who else it always circles back to the guy working and paying Gov.
I can imagine nothing less enjoyable than being driven around in a soulless vehicle..who yearns for a SubWay style commute always and forever, please stand back from the platform or you may get sucked off.

______________

Harry Reid has been a politician his whole life and somehow retired with a net worth of something like $10 million. I bet he has family members with crazy high numbers. All sorts of land deals.

McConnells number is not that high, him and his wife both have probably been making a few hundred thousand a year for decades in DC. So maybe $400k a year for 20+ years?

It wouldn't surprise me if a dentist or doctor retires with about the same amount.

Compound interest is very powerful, if you can squirrel only like $5k a year from when you start your career, hitting 7 figures is almost guaranteed in something like S&P500 index fund when you retire.

When pickup trucks became a combination of status symbol and everyday-driver for people, mostly men. Pickup trucks used to suck as daily drivers. As more people bought them for that purpose, they wanted features and luxuries. They got them.

I doubt the whiz-bang tailgate is going to make it onto most work trucks, but they will on the daily-driver/weekend-runabout trucks.

They made a movie about Aileen staring Charlize Theron titled Monster.

I found it weird, because it failed utterly to get me to sympathize with Aileen at all. One man hires her as a prostitute and then beats her. She then kills several other men (not the guy who beat her), including one very nice guy who wanted to help her.

Christina Ricci played Aileen's friend/lover, and she was portrayed negatively for giving Aileen up to authorities.

It was weird.

Right you are. But I wouldn't call the air-cooled versions "a joke." They were very competitive in that category in their time. Porsche is, or used to be, about the driving experience, the sensation of being on the road not above it, about weight to power efficiency, and about a car that tests you and loves to perform the more it performs. My favorite was the mid-80s Carrera with the 3.2. Porsche lost some soul when the went to water-cooled. That pure air-cooled howl at 5000 rpms was unmistakable and incomparable.

I've always bought Porsches close to their flatlined depreciation curve. Usually 5-7 years old. Still pretty new, but old enough to be able to enjoy without freaking out every time it goes outside the garage.

Right now the best buy out there is a 2010-12 Cayman S. You can get one for around 30-35K, they were $75-85K new. And are a hell of a car.

120 On this line item, at least, Beto is absolutely right, and doesn't even go far enough. Everyone who has taken part in enforcing any drug law should be subjected to "Nuremberg trials."
I am completely serious. If you add up the years of life wasted in prison by people who only wanted to help someone feel good, the War on Drugs is entirely comparable to the Holocaust.
****

"People who only wanted to help someone feel good" is the wierdest way I've ever heard to describe someone who deals drugs for a living.

Most of those don't really care why someone wants their product, they recognize its a product in high demand and the risk is astronomical, but the reward is very lucrative if you can move enough product.

There's nothing altruistic about it. At *best* its flat Greed. And while I don't automatically hate a person for Greed, very few drug dealers leave it at that.

Beto is the designated mover of the Overton Window, and he'll be rewarded in the future for his service to the socialist cause. Mind you in some cases that reward is a bullet, because socialists get rid of their useful idiots when they're no longer useful, but that won't be the case in this country for several years yet. He and Yang and Bernie push the limits on what is acceptable discourse on an issue, and that is their job. It works. Beto doesn't need a Dacha like Bernie did, being married to absurd wealth, so his reward will likely be fame or respectability inside the right circles. Not bad for a clown.

Btw, I have no idea what the hell happened up above.

548 The problem with any plan to do anything with "non-violent" offenders is that they almost always have one or more violent offenses. But if they happen to be in jail this time for for a non-violent one, they get whatever benefit is offered.

If we were going to consider any kind of benefit for "non-violent" offenders it would need to be only people who have NEVER committed a violent offense.

Not that I support this kind of stuff at all, but that seems to be a loophole no one ever points out.
