Washington Post Express Shuts Down, Laying Off 20 "Journalists"

The free commuter paper was put out of business due to a lack of public interest in something free.

Even at zero dollars and zero cents, it did not have enough customers.

The whiny babies blamed the public's complete lack of interest in anything they did on smart phones.

"Add Express to the list of print publications done in by mobile technology," the editors wrote. "Sadly, this is our final edition."

The Post announced the shuttering of its Express publication just a day earlier, ending the 16-year run of the publication handed out to riders on D.C.'s Metro rail system.

About 20 journalists have been laid off as a result of the publication's closure. The Washington Post Guild, which did not represent the Express's writers, slammed the decision and in particular the short notice given to employees, some of whom found out from media reports.

"This announcement came the day before operations ceased, with no advance warning," the union said Wednesday.

"These employees, many of them young women, performed the same jobs as other staff in our newsroom for substantially lesser pay," it continued.

"Journalists" call this bitchy, whiny cover "perfect."

110 Its not really phones that are killing newspapers, though. Its the cost of newspapers and their plummeting quality. Yes, the internet's news access is a factor, but if newspapers didn't suck so hard for so long, people might have still read them. But the cost kept going up and the quality (and size) kept going down so people lost any affection or loyalty they may have had.

132 Kinda related to phones....I was reading some reviews of campgrounds on the Oregon coast. Now when you read reviews of a campground, what do you looks for? Were the campsites good size, was there a nice view were the bathrooms clean, etc.

But at least 1/4 of the review, and mostly the 1 or 2 star reviews were about cell phone coverage. Whole bunch of review along the lines of "this place sucked we got no bars on the phone" or "we were told there'd be good wifi and it sucked so we are never coming back here again".

And I'm like fuck, if wifi is your #1 priority when camping, you're doing it wrong.

Implication for more hair-on-fire pay inequality? Except, it says "many of them were young women." Meaning not all. Meaning others (men, presumably) also made less.

I don't know about these sainted people, but in the real world, there also exists a pay grade structure, and it's based on performance, but even more so, how long one has been at that job. Not everyone hired to do "X" will make the exact same amount, as some are newer hires than others. Does this factor into their insinuation? Something tells me we'll never know.

181 What's laughable is that instead of taking a deep, hard look into themselves to see what they did wrong, they instead blame technology.

They cannot figure out that theirs is an industry dominated by CONTENT. No CONTENT, no one reads.

There is PLENTY of room left for print media but their CONTENT must improve.

Heading home from Paris right now, I read this and was instantly reminded of what I saw there: at the train station, you could pick up the Financial Times, several German, Spanish and Russian publications, other British titles, including the disgraced weekly The Economist, and naturally every French publication under the sun. And as bad as most of those publications are, I guarantee you, even without the benefit of knowing those languages fluently, the reporting and writing is far superior to anything you can find in the United States.

Our media SUCKS and this is just the latest evidence of that.

225 181 What's laughable is that instead of taking a deep, hard look into themselves to see what they did wrong, they instead blame technology.

The thing about this machine is if it actually works, then humanity can build a few of them and directly address the problem that climate hysterics have pinpointed for decades as the single largest environmental problem.

We rev those machines up and they get our CO2 particulates down to a level the climate science community has deemed acceptable? Well, then what more do they want?

The science has been addressed.

Putting aside whether this is specific solution actually desirable or not, can you imagine a better way to identify the environmental movement as nothing more than a political Trojan Horse for socialism than to actually address their problem with a different solution than they had advised and for them to just simply continue demanding their own solution?

Most of what he made after a certain point was supposed to have undertones of "pacifism" and complete moral relativism regarding the East vs West Cold War.

The problem is that he could only get it out in certain speeches while the movies dramatically undermined those points.

The Guns of Navarone is supposed to be anti-war based on a couple of speeches, but the fight is won through violence. So, what's the message?

Neither the Brits (or the Canadians or other people in countries with parliamentary systems) do not understand our politics because they detest political gridlock and cannot understand why it is not a bug in our system but rather a feature.

Once you figure out a parliamentary system is just a way to fuse the legislative function with the executive (and bye-bye "separation of powers/checks and balances") it's relatively easy to understand.

Posted by: Curmudgeon

Lack of awareness and the desire to display their hippness. Advertisers are told we have a weekly readership of 10,00 (number randomly pulled out of my monkey butt). Publisher actually prints 10k and puts them in free distribution points. At the end of the week they pickup 7485 (nrpoommb) which are untouched. Of the other 2515 copies 2406 were grabbed so someone could read the alternative comics or the upcoming music venues while eating a burger and then thrown in the trash. The Feminist Union of Cat Ladies are the only ones who actually took the remaining 109 copies home and read them cover to cover. Print advertising is a foolish waste of $ with the possible exception of car dealers.

Northern Lurker pointed out that Biden over and over either threatens
someone with violence or invites advisories to a wrestling or punching

428 Anyway, the best line in Biden's ramble is "My word as a Biden". What does that even mean?

Kumquat.

430 The thing about this machine is if it actually works, then humanity can build a few of them and directly address the problem that climate hysterics have pinpointed for decades as the single largest environmental problem.

Except, of course, that cannot be done. Thermodynamics tells us so. Sequestering CO2 permanently would require more energy than was obtained by burning the original fuel that contained it.

432 Easy. Read "Mein Kampf." Young Schicklgruber was fanatically pro-German (in which category he included Austria), rails against the Slavs marginalizing ethnic Germans in his native Austria, and of course volunteered to fight for Germany in WWI.

Along come the international socialists who want to do away with the very concept of "nation."

That's why.

Incidentally, he asserts in Mein Kampf that this internationalism was what made him anti-Semitic as well.

Yes, and they still come at this from two completely opposite directions.

The Commies believed in uniting all of the working people under one banner until eventually all the borders could fade away and humanity could be one, big, happy family. The Nazis believed the end of the nation state could be achieved simply by conquering everybody and killing anyone who opposed it or who, in their view, simply didn't belong.

They existed on the same evil, Statist coin, but on two different sides.

We build a special rocket ship, fill it full of CO2, and launch it into deep dpace.
