What Color Is The Sky In Their World? The (Il)Logic Behind Progressive Policies

We love to make fun of the liberals and progressives because they believe in the perfectibility of Man, and are willing to suspend belief in immutable laws of economics in furtherance of their goals. Many of us have first-hand knowledge of the destruction wrought by rent control and minimum wage laws, and here is a concise explanation of the (lack of) mindset that allows otherwise minimally intelligent people to believe in things that just aren't so.

What If All Reality Were Optional?

Take, for example, support for rent control. Having the state keep the monetary prices of rental units below the values that would arise in free markets is believed by many pols and pundits – and by nearly all “Progressives” – to effectively keep the actual market values of rental units at whatever low prices the state sets. In this reality-is-optional world, when the state pushes down nominal rental prices, the quantity of rental units supplied not only does not fall, it increases to match the increase in the quantity of rental units demanded.

Want more housing for folks with modest incomes? No problem! We’ll just push the rental prices lower to increase ordinary folks’ access to housing. See, the world is such a simple place!

Similar reality-is-optional ‘solutions’ are minimum-wage statutes (for increasing the pay of low-skilled workers) and mandated paid-leave (for increasing the welfare of all workers).

The article is funny, but also sad, because untold millions of people have been and continue to be injured by the hubris of perfectibility coupled with the stupidity of liberalism.

Of course the hard Left uses these dupes as fodder, and they care not a whit that unemployment will rise and housing will grow both more scarce and less habitable, because that is the goal, and not an unintended consequence.

In this World, at this Time, the word "Trans" means pretend.

Prove me wrong.

For instance, a transwoman is...a man pretending to be a woman.

Thus, the word trans obviously and logically means "pretend."

31 Ignoring reality is the shibboleth of leftist theology. To show your virtue, you HAVE to express belief in manifestly ridiculous items of The Faith.

You HAVE to believe (at least appear to believe) that global warming is an existential threat, despite the lack of evidence You HAVE to believe that spending more on educating dumb kids will make them bright, despite a half century of contrary evidence. You HAVE to believe that differential rates of incarceration reflect racism, not differential rates of criminality. You HAVE to believe that there is a large and growing number of sexes, despite your own two eyes. You HAVE to believe that "diversity" is a strength, despite the painful experience of Yugoslavia, Rwanda, the Kurds, etc.

The list goes on and on.

35 On the topic of "reality is optional" - the NYT is flogging this story about Kavanaugh that they claim is 'new". In fact it is not "new", and it got dropped when it first came out because it was a man telling a story about a woman at a party, and she was asked about it and said she didn't remember anything at about it. Nobody else remembered anything about it either.

Wow, what a "scoop".

And the NYT deliberately misuses the word "corroboration" in their story today, which is unforgivable. It is supposed to mean that OTHER people confirm the story; but in this case they mean that two people went back and asked the guy who told the story if he said that, and he said "yeah, but I will never testify to it under oath. "

And that is the entire "Story" - one liberal democrat told a story that he won't swear to, and not one other single person in the world will back it up. That's it, that's the entire thing.

The current system is even crazier. You can get tax abatements for building luxury units but only if you set aside units for low income tenants. These go to friends of DiBlasio

WWII price controls is what got us employer paid health insurance.

68 The post is true but incomplete. A lot of silly politics are deliberately obtuse in order to hide theft (usually ongoing theft).

Since we're all mortal and money is just a time coupon, the theft either is, or often evolves to be, a form of slavery. A huge amount of leftist nonsense is a misdirection used to mask their advocacy for various forms of slavery large and small.

The Slavery Party often tries to return to their roots and since they dare not admit it openly they have to believe (or at least pretend to believe) obvious lies.

They also overestimate ability to sustain a convincing lie. So their leftist schemes always lead to colossal failure because, surprising enough, people don't usually want to be slaves.

Depends on what she wants.

If she wants the big prize, she needs to knock off Warren.

And should concentrate on that.

Then go after Biden and Bernie.

If Warren's out or severely damaged that leaves her as the only "alternative" candidate.

Bernie strikes me as easy to knock off.

Biden may knock himself out with his senility. So him last.

Probably stuff called ibogaine.

That was the secret drug that Hunter S. Thompson claimed Ed Muskie started taking when he was getting crushed in early primaries in 1972. Muskie was the front-runner at the beginning of '72, but dropped-out by the end of April. Joe Biden seems more like Ed Muskie every day now. I need to re-read Thompson's "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72." I highly recommend it. It demonstrates that US Presidential politics hasn't changed a bit since 1972. (And probably not since 1792.)

They were already entering the farcical stage 15 years ago, when they still had real reporters, with brains and reason, like John Burns or Dexter Filkins [somehow refrained from ever asking them how they felt about their paper's worst low-points, wonder how they felt about them].

Now? Beats that once, not THAT long ago, were done by fairly reasonable people [even if crippled by NYC/Beltway mindsets, ignorance, and bigotries] are handled by the likes of Haberman, just dumb hacks who wouldn't have been able to be researchers in years past.

Yep. Rant on textbooks to follow.

Why the hell do they need new textbooks all the time, especially for subjects such as math? Students aren't learning the latest advances in math; they're learning (or are supposed to be learning) stuff that in many cases has been known for centuries.

If I were teaching math, I'd just go to Project Gutenberg and adopt some free out of copyright texts.

For example, I'd teach calculus from Silvanus Thompson's* book "Calculus Made Easy," published in 1914. It's wonderful, a perfect introduction to the subject, and the price is right.

About the author:

* "Silvanus Phillips Thompson (1851 - 1916) was a professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College in Finsbury, England. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1891 and was known for his work as an electrical engineer and as an author. Thompson's most enduring publication is his 1910 text Calculus Made Easy, which teaches the fundamentals of infinitesimal calculus, and is still in print."

Posted by: Hoary Puffleg at September 15, 2019 03:23 PM (j0JAA)

No, because they're intentionally using the legal dodge that the American system allows. (we shouldn't, but we do) The NYT is saying "look at what this OTHER person said about Kavanaugh!" So in terms of legal fact, this is a "true" statement, since yes, this other person did say that. The fact that the person they're quoting is a shameless liar and everyone who's looked at his story agrees that it is total bunk doesn't enter into it.

That's why libel laws are a joke in this country. Publishers are allowed to print any libel they want, as long as they say "oh WE'RE not saying that, we're just reporting that this OTHER person said that."

Even when, as in this case, that person only said it privately and then refused to repeat the claim under oath.

Exactly. Even in the sciences, where things have advanced a lot, a 20 year old textbook will do perfectly well even for lower division college students (and a a fortiori for high school students) , because students still need to learn the basics first.

In physics, treatment of classical mechanics, electrical circuits, etc. at the elementary level hasn't changed in generations.

Same thing with chemistry: pH, buffers, Lewis/ Bronsted acids-bases, stoichiometry, introductory bonding and thermodynamics, etc. haven't changed conceptually in generations either.

So why the need for ludicrously expensive four-color textbooks with marginal entries about the first black female astronaut to take a dump in space, as one of my sons' books featured?

Double the tax per pack to $2, take $1.4 Billion. What happened?

The tax is not on smoking, it is on the purchase of cigarettes in Mass. People will change their behavior to avoid paying the tax less than they will change it to not smoke.

Another thing I've seen mentioned, which really isn't a surprise to anyone who's followed the Saudi's - the accuracy of the targeting indicates that there were people inside the oil operations providing info and working with the attackers.

I wouldn't be surprised if some members of the Saudi Royals who have been sidelined by MBS are overjoyed at this, hoping it will make him look bad. Wouldn't be surprised if some of them were involved as well.

236 "All else being equal" has to be the biggest fallacy in economics.

Massachusetts makes $1 Billion annually taxing cigarettes $1/pack
(amount is fictional for this example)

Double the tax per pack to $2, take $1.4 Billion. What happened?

Some quit, some smoke less, more people go to NH for cigarettes, fewer come from NY and CT to buy cigs.

The tax is not on smoking, it is on the purchase of cigarettes in Mass. People will change their behavior to avoid paying the tax less than they will change it to not smoke.

This, in a nutshell, is the most common fallacy of leftist thought, if you'll pardon the exaggeration. They've never taken differential equations, and consequently do not grasp that changing one quantity will induce a concomitant change in other quantities to which the first quantity is coupled.

If the Prog's dreams of "Universal Health Care is a Right," and "Free Universal Health Care," dreams ever come true, we'll learn that that Right is far, far from absolute and unlimited. Older people will probably learn that their "right" to health care may turn out to be only a right to an annual physical and a limited list of medications. Also, the Bill of Rights guarantees the right to a speedy trial, but does not guarantee the right to speedy or even timely health care.

And wow, that's a keeper. Flavorful, rich, and honestly pretty low-carb. And fool-proof -- I won't say easy, you have to cut a pork shoulder into little 1 inch cubes and brown them. But there's no way to mess this recipe up, no measurement required.

Did all browning and simmering in the same cast-iron dutch oven on the stove top, so not much clean-up. Made it the night before, then warmed it up, probably made it even better, because left-overs were great.

Thank you for this thread. I really appreciate it.

Most don't understand what all this means.

If Trump can prove to the world that we can replace mid east oil, then suddenly that part of the world has a LOT less clout on the world stage, and folks won't have to handle them with Kid Gloves anymore.

It Trump was REALLY going to freak people out, call Vlad Putin and tell him we will help with HIS oil production as well, to help out Europe, IF he will help us get to the bottom of who REALLY was meddling in our elections.

292 optimal allocation of resources is NOT THE GOAL of society. Subsidies, price controls, etc, all commit the crime of suboptimal efficiency but maybe try measuring society by a metric that actually matters like social trust and cohesion. A blue collar worker neighbor being well-off enough to say, for example, support a family of 4 on a single income, is much more in my interest than the profit maximization of a capital owner.
