Importing Chinese Consumer Goods Is One Thing...Importing Their Authoritarian "Social Credit System" Is Something Entirely Different

It's actually too late, as we have seen over the past several years. Curiously, debits seem to fall primarily in the conservative thoughts and behaviors column. Funny, that...

The Invisible Shackles of America's Social Credit System

There are hundreds of examples that have been prominently discussed in the right-of-center world. The Oberlin College vs. Gibson's Bakery is a excellent example with a happy ending, but far too many of these censorious events slip past the media and become embedded in the default behaviors of regular folk.

And it's censorship, plain and simple. And yes, I know what censorship really is, but when the internet police, with their monopoly on most communication decide to censor, it is indistinguishable from government action. And when banks (with government licenses!) limit speech and behavior and commerce to leftist-approved businesses, how does it differ from government's jack-booted thugs shutting down a legal business?

Social media platforms are the modern “town square,” a place where everyone comes to discover and share information and weigh-in with opinions. Everyone, regardless of their politics, class, or creed, should have access to this marketplace of ideas.
As much as the idea of defining internet and social media access as a civil right makes me queasy, it may be the only way around the pinch-faced scolds of Silicon Valley. Access to the banking system is less problematic, but never forget the law of unintended consequences: it will always bite you in the ass!

18 A few decades ago the California Supreme Court held that owners of private shopping centers could not exclude protestors and activists from their property on the theory that these privately-owned spaces had supplanted the traditional town square and exclusion would subvert the protestors' First Amendment rights.

It seems like a principle that is well suited to the new internet oligarchs -- Google, Facebook, Twitter, et. al. -- who seek to mold public opinion by systematically marginalizing speakers with whom they disagree.

23 >>> As much as the idea of defining internet and social media access as a civil right makes me queasy, it...

If internet and social media is so important to modern then it is a 'utility'. Very similar to Ma Bell actually.

But for reason whenever some assclown comes up with an entirely new idea using the internet the only thing new about it is 'internet'. For example,

Hey! I have a great new invention, instead of calling a taxi on the phone we can 'call it' using the internet. And on the other side, instead of the dispatcher, all the available drivers call use the internet when they are available to see if there is a 'fare' nearby then get get to asap... and instead of calling it 'internet taxi' we can call it 'ride share'...

So free?

No, you still have to pay for it, just like a taxi, but it's not a taxi because internet.

26 That is why conservatives should support vigorous anti trust actions that break up monopoly and oligarchic companies. The libertarian strains of economic thought that argue these are a positive good ignore the collateral consequences that monopolies and oligopolies bring to the table: notably corruption of government officials, treating one set of customers better than others on things like pricing, disdain for customer service, and ultimately stagnation in the market until either the monopoly is outflanked or collapses under its misdeeds.

Have enough competition where you will go broke if you screw your customers because they will go elsewhere or if you engage in government corruption is a good thing.

What I have learned is that any government based action can be captured by the persistent monopoly or oligopoly companies. Eliminate gatekeepers where individual and lawyers can sue their butts into oblivion makes it a lot harder to choke off opposition.

Anti-trust is like that.

31 Historically, the ability of a government to effectively tyrannize 100 percent of its subjects has been constrained by technology and cost. The East bloc had to rely on hordes of watchers to watch the citizenry and it was still a hit or miss situation at best.

With the amount of data that is routinely collected on every person every day by electronic devices, that barrier is gone. When seen in conjunction with the Left's wholesale embrace of totalitarianism, this does not bode well for the future.

Here's my take on it:

1) It's common courtesy to acknowledge a gift. Just because he acknowledges it - and thanks you for it! - doesn't mean that that's why you did it!
2) I doubt that many parishioners do all that much for him that he could be spending his days thanking him for.
3) I think you'd be surprised who they know - and it probably meant a lot to him that you thought enough of him to send him that gift card.

49 Commenters on AoSHQ will absolutely be the first people dinged for credit scores.

My next door neighbor works from home and teaches Chinese people English. If you can speak fluent English without an accent, it is a boost to your social credit score. Basically, she says when she teaches rural students, the entire family will be in the room trying to learn so they all improve their scores on the test. If your score is too low, you aren't allowed to travel across the country or even apply for jobs in cities.

What scares me is if I am advertising on Google or Facebook for my business and they're logging whether I am a second amendment supporter or anti-LGBT, etc., that they will in turn penalize my business. I guarantee if I turned my business website into a LGBT holiday, it would immediately see SEO benefits. Some of this social score will be hidden- i.e. business that back the approved public thinking will be the only ones that show up in the results. No due process or debate needed.

The problem is in the mindset of the people writing and running the code and capturing and using the data.

Breaking up Google into separate search, cloud, apps, etc. divisions or companies will do nothing. The same poisoned mindset will run all of those companies.

The ideas poisoning these people need to be rooted out. Unfortunately, that's going to eventually require violence. I think it's eventually going to be armed conflict, but it could also be an Atlas Shrugged sort of thing where the productive normals shut off the electricity, water, food, and fuel just by walking away.

75 "China reformed nothing in response to the efforts of Nixon. In fact one
gets the impression that Nixon was okay with China's murderous ways"

one of the reasons for Nixon "opening the door" for China was supposedly to keep China/Russia from becoming more unified. I've heard that is one of the long term goals for US, but at this point at least, we'd be better aligned (in detente style perhaps) with Russia/India/US ... not with China/Pakistan/US ... which is what WallStreet and ??? shadow men seemed to like.

But I haven't seen real authoritative sources speak on that old "dilemma". Interesting though that Clinton sold out tech to China (covertly ... in the 90s and maybe more recently with most favored nation status, and tech secrets stolen) ... but Clinton also sold Uranium and Skolkovo tech to Russia ... then tried to make sure Trump had trouble with talking with Putin.

If there is a grand plan, it is not clear to me. We got way too close to China, which I think was a globalist plan to marginalize USA sovereignty patriots (deplorables).

A great many websites use Google trackers and won't work properly if you block them.

Google bought Captcha, which means if you want access to a lot of sites on the internet, you have to grant access to Google to your browser and all the other history it encompasses.

This is why they need to be broken up, to keep their reach avoidable if you so choose.

At first, I also scoffed at the idea of seeing access as "a right". But now I see demonstrated every day how the power to control access is turned into the power to control people, and votes. And now I don't scoff at any of it anymore.

Posted by: Tom Servo at September 15, 2019 01:11 PM (V2Yro)

86 Once the censorship and job loss gets to be too much to bear, people will start moving to the places where it either doesn't happen as much or where its against the law.

Unless Congress takes steps now to stop or slow this.

This will be the foundation of the future conflict between the right and the left.

The right or the left will move to areas where they can express themselves the way they wish without penalty and eventually this will cause conflicts between these areas.

Just as California bans certain goods from certain states they will do the same for other causes.

This may not be statewide. I figure in rural PA, I'll be relatively okay because I'm retired and am surrounded by ppl who live the old fashioned way of live and let live. You know, like it was 20 years ago.

But there will be lines drawn so that the larger and Democrat controlled cities will force out those who cannot live under their rules. And vice versa.

We have little crime here in my small town because all the criminals go to Pittsburgh or Philly if they want to try and make it. Crime does not pay in a small town. Everyone knows your business and thus so do the police. Only the occasional stranger crime gets away with it and even that is less because there is little action late at night so marauding criminals are more easily spotted.

I know it's not fair that some have to move to get their guaranteed rights but hey that's the breaks. Politically you may not be able to overcome them and you will have to put up with it or move.

the (liberal) guy that did analysis on how many votes Google influenced, and showed that their searches were indeed biased (Bing was not, but Bing is 2% of the search market) ... that liberal guy says he (and Google has it)has the ability to analyze and see if searches are programmed with bias.

So we would need oversight to make sure they do NOT give political advantage via "Go Vote" messages sent only to liberals, for example. Also the whole search itself, that pushes an agenda in results, rather than true results ... would be a breach of their "contract" to be a neutral participant. (just a provider, not an editor).

Also they have lied to Congress .. lock them up for the lies they told ... many ways to crack this nut, but the GOPe is not on our side.

110 I'm kind of surprised that on blogs and in the US generally, so little attention is being paid to the attacks on the Saudi Oil facilities yesterday. Maybe because it wasn't the typical terrorist attacks that kill a bunch of people.

I know what guides the news, if it bleeds, it leads. BUT as sad as it is when 100 civilians get killed for no reason in Afghanistan or any other mid eastern shithole, strategically attacks like that are meaningless. They have no significance other than to add to the general ongoing misery of the region.

BUT - an attack, sponsored by Iran, on the heart of the Saudi supply apparatus (which is the main supply line to Europe, China, and Japan) is Huge. Which is why the Saudi's, under MBS, have been working so hard to build a military alliance with Israel. Israel rightly sees the Iranian regime as the biggest existential threat to them in the world today, especially if they get nukes, and so Israel will jump at the opportunity to be part of an Arab led effort to destroy the Iranian government.

Of course once Israel attacks Iran, then Lebanon explodes with missiles and attacks down into the Galilee region. But Israel may welcome the opportunity to finally eliminate that threat once and for all.

161 I think someone needs to propose an amendment to the constitution expanding the First Amendment to all private and non profit entities.

Also, finally, a conservative gets what needs to be done. Michelle Mallon organized a rally a few days ago in Rockville, Maryland, the county seat of Montgomery County, opposing the county executive's sanctuary policies, which has resulted in a number of illegal aliens raping women. Malkin even confronted the County Executive to his face, but unsurprisingly, he did not respond.

This is a good start, but people in Maryland who oppose these policies - and local people have to be the ones to do this - must knock on the doors of their neighbors and talk to them about the county's sanctuary policies. Even if it means confronting hard to convince leftist voters.

I recall that in 1994, I did volunteer work for George Pataki, who was running for Governor of New York, who eventually upset Mario Cuomo. I was doing cold calls, and one of them was to a woman in The Bronx, who yelled at me for calling her, saying that she would never vote for a Republican. I apologized and hung up, but in retrospect, I should have firmly disagreed with her. This is what committed people on our side are going to have to do to stop leftism from winning.

It is hard (impossible?) to define "The Saudis" or the Israelis ... or many of these countries as any one thing. Many of them are as divided as US, or more so. The USA concept of liberty for all (Americans) is rather unique ... we hope other Western countries have it, but I'm not sure if any of them have a Bill of Rights like ours.

The Saudi elite are heavily invested in our markets, and our politics (Hillary, Bush ?) ... but despite all their revenue, they had bin Laden and the factions that were in constant rebellion. We hope some MENA "NATO" emerges that works for US (Jordan/Egypt/Israel/Saudis/?) ... and that seems to be what we have for now, with our back seat leadership I guess.

But all those countries have various degrees of intense internal struggle ... we hope to get out guys in power everywhere (Iran, Ukraine, Venezuela) ... but that can be tricky ColonialismLite business. imo though, we need to prevent ChinaMob or RussianMob from getting greater hold in our hemisphere ... many things come to a head before 2020 election, probably.

I wish mom was leaving today as planned so that i could have asked her what her problem was with PDT. And so I can keep on topic. We need to begin manufacturing in the US again. Our economy is booming and it only took 3 years to fire it up. The 2019 Michigan MoMe is next weekend!!!

Join us September 20 & 21 in the greater metropolitan area of Chelsea, Michigan for the festivities.

Friday night, we dine in Hell. Literally. We'll be at the Hell Saloon in Hell, Michigan for dinner around 6:30-ish. After dinner, we'll return to the cabin campsite built on the cursed ancient Indian burial ground just down the road from the state prison for the criminally insane for ukulele practice.

During the day on Saturday, we'll be hanging out at the cabin, whittling entire trees into toothpicks & just generally relaxing. The roundtable discussion topic this year is "IKEA Shelving: Threat or Menace?", followed by small unit tactics practice.

Saturday evening we'll go in to town for diner at the BBQ joint around 4:30; after which we'll return to the campsite for a large thermal event & pants-less dancing to the finest ukulele band in all the land.

If you have a sense of adventure & questionable judgement, there are a limited number of berths still available in the bunk-house style cabin. Let us know if you plan on over-nighting on site.

Click the link in the sidebar for more details. If you signed up prior to 06SEP19 but did not receive a confirmation e-mail, please sign up again.
