The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Anyone wonder whether there has been a sea change among the "Palestinian People?" Poke through this poll and be amazed at the dysfunction and savagery that is apparent in their society. It amazes me that after 70 years they still won't admit that they would be much better off living in Israel than under the thumb of their kleptocratic, murderous current rulers.

Public Opinion Poll

In light of the suspension of peace negotiations, Palestinians support various alternative directions: 62% support popular non-violent resistance; 50% support a return to an armed intifada; 40% support dissolving the PA; and 32% support abandoning the two-state solution and demanding the establishment of one state for Palestinians and Israelis.

I had two interesting topics about which I was going to rant, but that early-rising, shape-shifitng, time-traveling, weather-manipulating landsman down below stole my links!

I think it may actually be a bad sign. I don't have polling numbers. But when I visited West Bank and Gaza twenty years ago, I would roughly approximate the number of Arabs who wanted rid of the PA/PLO to be approximately 110%.

How can a poll work if respondents can pick more than one option?

I would think certain groupings might be more meaningful, such as:

-- Preferring dissolve PA AND non-violent protest

I get the feeling they didn't pair these options in order to hide the true number of those who are violent and want a 1 state, i.e. OK with "kill all the Jews and make a Palestinian state."

Funny. It's sort of like the "old houses are better built" thing. It's not that all old houses were better built than new ones, it's that the old houses you still see around were built well enough to still be standing.

The old ideas that progressives see are the ones espoused by conservatives, and they are espoused by conservatives because of all the old ideas, these ones are the ones that work and allow a society to function well. The old ideas that didn't actually work were forgotten. But when you also think "Old things are bad" and don't realize that literally every possible idea of social configurations has been thought of and tried before somewhere in the past if it doesn't exist today, there's almost certainly a good reason why it didn't end up having legs.

And no, that reason is not that evil capitalism and christianity and the patriarchy stomped them all out.

Sadly, it's no longer online, but the weekly standard had a column by Larry Miller recounting a recent visit to Israel. He visited an Israeli hospital where they provided top care to all - Palestinians, Jews, all the same. He asked one of the doctors what was the hardest part of her work and she replied, "It's hard when they clap." Specifically, when Palestinian patients sitting in an Israeli hospital awaiting medical care from Jewish doctors, nurses, etc. that break out in applause when the ER receives a victim of Palestinian terrorists.

They get a 1 state solution, it will be a failed state solution on day 2.

But I guess suicide vests are sexier or something.

No, Mollie, you are being too generous and kind. Or you are simply trying to toot your own horn.

These people are inexperienced but that hasn't stopped them from using their full indoctrination in the US education system, especially college, to attack anyone they see as being an impediment to achieving their new world order. I believe this is why the left identifies with orthodox Muslims, whose Koran teaches that lying about your enemies is noble when it is done to further the cause. The left fully believes anything is acceptable in the march toward their domination, so have a lot in common with them.

You people think you have it bad?

It was 80 this am -- at 3 am, mind you -- with a heat index of 87. High today 93, heat index probably around 100. And this will not change appreciably before Thanksgiving, if then. We may have cool and once in a while cold weather (no guarantees) until Feb. 28, and then as if a switch has been thrown, back to humid nasty warmth, steadily heating up, until next November or December.

We have two seasons. January, and SUMMER.

However, the decision to continue to sell to LEO's and military will be used by the left. Their statement on Facebook needed less" we support the second amendment" and more leveling on the financial side of their decision.

There won't be enough LE sales to keep them afloat. LE buys once a year when their budgets come out, and not every department buys every year.

268 Stossell does a video about Africa's failures ... he says "too many rules" is a big problem that thwarts entrepreneurs. A business woman says the corruption is a problem, but it is a result of the stupid laws (e.g. 70% import tax on a product she needs to make her product).
youtube.com/watch?v=eqD3QbzSsIs

He also mentions a shoemaker that can't sell much, because American business can sell shoes by promising to give a pair to "Africa" for every pair bought in America. So the African has to compete against "American charity" and goes out of business.

imo the problem starts with the culture of corruption, and in the third world the not so "noble savages" are mostly tyrants with power to steal from the servant class, which destroys the local "free market" economy. These tyrants love to lay the blame for their hard times on some external "Satan". People in desperation may turn to drugs and/or violence against "the other".

USA drug death could be partly blamed on our own less than noble savages of Wall Street, that chose to ignore American Liberty, and ship our manufacturing economy to a place where they had slaves and could pollute, and got in bed with their "fellow commies" (commie being anyone ruling via control of government policy for personal gain).

"Free Trade" supported theft, slavery, pollution ... as long as it served the corporate interest, and rigged the markets for the leveraged gamblers. Back in 1990, Trump testified to Congress against such globalist tax/monetary policy, but the easy "irrational exuberance" fiat money kept flowing, and we were told "globalism" was inevitable, lay back and take it, with a spoonful of opiates to help the medicine go down. Our own tyrants turned major cities into third world hell holes.

Israel does a better job at recognizing their enemies and building barriers, though it is maybe more obvious for them. Bannon is trying to bring US back to believing more in American (Liberty) First than the MoneyFirst globalist "free trader" tyrant scams. Trump continues to win on that policy.

Posted by: shibumi, in house selling hell at September 19, 2019 11:45 AM (gdfZ0)

Bleh, the UAW always strategizes whenever contracts are up to determine which of the big 3 they are going to strike. They voted back in June to strike GM if contract negotiations didn't satisfy them because GM is perceived by the UAW to be in the weakest position and would cave easier.

GM announced this week that they have stopped paying health insurance premiums on striking workers, LOL.
The average worker on strike is receiving $250 a week from the union. Some are already caterwauling about having to pay bills. You see a handful of workers walking the picket line , if you were to poll a bunch of the rank and file, you would find they aren't enthused about a walk out.
It's not like there are thousands of workers out walking in front of GM plants.

Most of them had been off for a couple weeks for changeover anyway. Now they are on strike.

One thing I did hear a picket line worker say that I have to agree with is how GM is treating temporary workers. GM has been using temps now for years. Those temps are making $15 hour compared to union workers who average $30. There are temporaries who have been employed full time by GM for four years, who then get hired as permanent, but only get two of the four years counted as full time service. Which is BS, IMO.

The union wants that changed to include all four years.

Free trade theory has a massive, glaring hole in it. It's always assumed that capital is immobile. That each country's built in structural advantages stay there, and everyone profits from producing what they're most efficient at.

The reality is that capital is mobile, and in "free trade", nothing stops it from flowing to places with abundant slave labor to exploit.

My mom just bought a Sorento and I have been driving it for a few weeks. Very roomy, decent visibility, not too many bells and whistles (you can get them, of course) but they all work and work well. Floor is flat when the seats are down and tons of storage cubbies and power outlets.

A couple of years back, I had a "Soul" as a rental. It is spacious inside for passengers, but not so much for cargo. In terms of ergonomics, though, I really liked the Soul. I like a bigger car than that, but it was the best small car I have driven in a very long time.

383 The CO2 effect saturates quickly, to get the same effect as the first 400 ppm you have to double it to 800, then 1600, etc.

Also the absorption spectra of CO2 is almost completely eclipsed by water vapor. That's why deserts cool off rapidly at night and you still have swamp ass in New Orleans.

It hardly matters what CO2 concentration is when water vapor is present.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 19, 2019 12:07 PM (Ct55T)

I can see how as an intellectual exercise in sophistry, that makes sense, but scientifically it's a bad analogy, because CO2 is *Not* an "impurity", but rather is an essential component of the atmosphere. And might as well point out that concentration of CO2 in every breath you exhale is much, much higher than that of the atmosphere in general.

The argument against CO2 tries to make the case that the Breath of every human being and animal on Earth is poisoning the planet. That is completely and absolutely false.

I think you can drop the "nearly" at this point. They got pretty serious about quality in the mid-aughts and it has really shown. I have a 2017 Sonata now, and had a 2006 Sonata prior to that. The '06 was very very good mechanically but had a little bit of unexpected year in the interior (though I also had it for 225k miles). My new '17 has a much more solid interior and is also mechanically sound so far, but it is still pretty new. I am very impressed with the quality of my new one. It does not drive or feel or operate like a cheap car.

Ok then.

YOU explain to me, using plain old fashioned Newtonian physics and properties of a gas, how a gas that makes up less than 40 one thousandths of the atmosphere, has the same specific gravity as the atmosphere, can....by adding less than 3% of volume to that fractional amount (mankind), is going to create enough thermal resistance to reflected solar radiation to significantly heat the planet, thusly destroying the ecosystems.

Ill accept an endothermic or an exothermic rational.

Nothing of what I said was "sophistry."

- There is a common, casual argument or premise to an argument that minuscule concentrations of components in a system are necessarily negligible.

- One comment above brought that to mind, if not directly utilizing that argument itself.

- I point out that that argument isn't necessarily true, depending on the system.

I make no further claims, not being an expert on atmospheric chemistry.

What is "sophistry" about that?

++++++++++++
Weight-stripping. One of the easiest way to squeeze a bit more economy out of the car is to strip the weight. Spare tires are pretty heavy. The donuts were largely because of size constraints but the actual *absence* of a spare is usually an economy decision. Run-flat tires and bit of expanding foam is much lighter.

It is also why we have mandatory TPMS maintenance. If your car has it, it *must* be kept in good repair by tire shops. If you have run-flats, you might not notice a flat (duh) but tire integrity is compromised and the tire *will* fail if you keep going. TPMS helps solve that problem by notifying the driver that there's a loss of pressure. It also lets you know at at a glance that you are at or near ideal (e.g., economical) pressure.

But hundreds of dollars per car (for mending them, anyway, not sure about manufacture) and limitless ownership and maintenance headaches - largely in the name of CAFE standards.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 19, 2019 12:21 PM (Ct55T)

It's an intellectual word game that has no relationship at all to the actual physical science of the components in question.

SOME small physical impurities can have disproportionate affects, such as plutonium, for example. But MOST small physical "impurities" have no effect at all, and some are extremely beneficial. (carbon in steel, CO2 in the atmosphere) If there is any "general case" that can be stated, it is that most of the time small concentrations in a larger solution are meaningless, but there are cases where they can have either a beneficial or detrimental impact. But it depends on the specific case being discussed.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 19, 2019 12:07 PM (Ct55T)

It is if one is discussing the bulk thermodynamic effects of CO2 in the atmosphere. For small change in a tiny constituent to cause big changes in overall climate, that would imply a positive feedback mechanism, which, if it existed, would have already been triggered hundreds of times over geologic history, extinguishing all life on Earth.

The feedback mechanisms in the atmosphere are negative, which is why life is possible at all.

448 What nobody seems to notice is that most Palestinians believe that someone showing even the slightest preference for dealing with Israel in any honest way risks the health and life of that person's entire family from members of the militant wings of both Fatah and Hamas.
This is especially true when talking on the phone to some unknown European person who might well reveal such a preference to local contacts. As a result seeing such opinions, which almost every sentient Palestinian actually believe, is as rare as finding an op ed in the NY Times with the headline: Trump Has Been a Great President.
Yet the latter is actually believed by perhaps a third of the population of the USA.And there are Americans who will not talk to pollsters, for fear of doxxing by unscrupulous Democrats.
