As soon as I saw the style, I went, "Hopper!" And I was right. It does remind you of the Bates Motel, or the hotel/whorehouse in the Stewart/Fonda comedy Cheyenne Social Club -- which whorehouse, as I recall, was separate from the town, and located just across the railroad tracks.

On the surface it's a simple picture of a lonely house beside some train tracks. Exacty like the tile says, but the way it's presented is very moody.
It's a lonely house. No background. No trees or shrubbery. No people. Not even a cloud in the sky. The viewer is at a low angle looking up, so the house almost looms over us. The tracks cut through the lower canvas, separating us from the house. There is no sign of life in the house, no lights in the windows. The track seem rusty, like they haven't been used in a while. The color of the rails is also used in the brick chimney, connecting the two images. Probably the most fascinating part about this painting is that Hopper was able to present this mood all the while using bright, clean colors. Because of this, the work is even more foreboding to me because it looks deceptive. They don't build houses like that anymore, do they. Look at the detail captured in the painting: he hand-carved frames of the windows, the woodworking detail around the widow's porch, etc. Real craftsmanship there, and this, I'm guessing, was not a rich person's house.
Every McMansion I see going up these days is every bit as large as the one in this painting, but has none of the demonstrated workmanship and all of the charm and character of Greta the magic climate profit (and yeah, that's intentionally misspelled, of course). "Always reluctant to discuss himself and his art, Hopper simply said, 'The whole answer is there on the canvas.' Hopper was stoic and fatalistic - a quiet introverted man with a gentle sense of humor and a frank manner. Hopper was someone drawn to an emblematic, anti-narrative symbolism, who 'painted short isolated moments of configuration, saturated with suggestion'. His silent spaces and uneasy encounters 'touch us where we are most vulnerable', and have 'a suggestion of melancholy, that melancholy being enacted'... Conservative in politics and social matters (Hopper asserted for example that 'artists' lives should be written by people very close to them'), he accepted things as they were and displayed a lack of idealism. Cultured and sophisticated, he was well-read, and many of his paintings show figures reading." Sounds like a good egg. Not one of his contemporary or our modern-day agitprop types. If you got to the link, the site provides two images of this picture, one slightly embiggened. But in the embiggened one, the tones change. I'm unsure as to why MOMA would provide one with different tones. One is wrong. The only reason I can think of is that the signature is visible in the other.

Hopper often offers an interesting viewpoint and this one is no exception. Instead of concentrating on the house (which is 'interesting' by itself) the strong, dark railroad and bed is the focus. The deep reddish-brown of the road bed is like a dark slash (threatening?), harsh and solid, across the image of the softer lines of the sunlit house. It's a little disturbing.
This painting makes me start thinking of story lines or at least situations. Here is a handsome, Victorian-era home with its appointments and comforts, looking out over sunlit grassy expanses, waiting for horse drawn carriages to bring visitors. It's away from the clamor of the city. Then comes the intrusion and disruption of the railroad, expressed so strongly in the painting. What happened to the people who lived there? Did they leave? Did they put up with the disruption of their lives? Does anyone still live there? There's no indication that the house is in use. The effectiveness of Hopper's painting for me is the way it produces an immediate emotional response and then the story thoughts. Posted by: JTB at September 20, 2019 09:59 AM (bmdz3) 133

Right now individual variation causes a lot of uncertainty in drug effectiveness and side effects, having some way of countering that would be ideal. Of course it would also have the potential for privacy violation Google could only dream of, so perhaps I should be more careful what I wish for.

155 Man being by a railroad sucks. Aunt/Uncle had a house in FL near the tracks. Yikes! Heidi almost jumped out of her skin in the middle of the night when that train came by. Lights right in the window, train rumble...whoa. Had to keep her from running out of the house. My aunt and uncle learned to sleep though it's.
Posted by: Cannibal Bob at September 20, 2019 10:04 AM (Zv1X1) Remember My Cousin Vinny? "Does that train come through here at 5 AM every morning???" "Oh no sir, that's very unusual." I lived about 2 miles from a train track and on some nights, it sounded like the train was in my backyard. It's amazing how that sound can travel.

I remember being taught that the Mansard Roof became popular when local governments used to assess homeowner taxes by how many stories your house had, and the Mansard was a cheat, as -- clearly -- it is simply the roof, not another level of the house.
A reason why many homes had few or no closets was due to taxes on the number of rooms. many row homes, including 'pepperboxes' were narrow and went straight back, because the taxation was by street frontage. Posted by: Blue Hen at September 20, 2019 10:23 AM (4rQKQ) 227

I don't know how much to blame the Somalis vs the local white liberals. I've been reading more about how Ilhan intimidates that community and it's effing terrifying. Her enforcers literally go door to door threatening people. It's literally the effing mafia all over again, and no one seems interested in clearing the warlord criminality away so those immigrants who came here for legit reasons can enjoy the rights they're entitled to -- also so the rest of us can be free of that criminal menace. One of her enforcers is now running for office in Somalia, where he can eff people up badly if their American relatives fail to support Ilhan. It is beyond sickening that the US AG was informed of all this and refused to look into any of it.

I love Victorian homes. There are many by me and some have been restored magnificently, but sadly, many others have bee butchered or torn down.
The originals usually had the kitchen and help's quarters in the basement. Most had dumbwaiters. They are filled with smallish rooms with specific purposes, like the music room, sitting room, gentlemen's parlous (for smoking,) etc. and usually a fireplace on each level. The best renovations I have seen move the kitchen to the first floor and knock down just a couple of walls to make for fewer but larger rooms. Same goes for upstairs where bedrooms were small and had no closets, just hooks on the wall. Posted by: IrishEi at September 20, 2019 10:37 AM (sGotD) 284

The one emotion that a movie can make me feel that I am most appreciative of is sadness.
I don't mean, "We're gonna kill a dog to get you crying," but actors, writers, and directors creating characters strong enough for me to actually invest in them and to see them fall apart convincingly. It's hard to make me sad, and I appreciate it when a movie can do that. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, The Winter Soldier with a new arm at September 20, 2019 10:35 AM (5eTMF) Happiness and joy are powerful emotions, but sadness is on a whole other level. Sadness is visceral. It's us at our most vulnerable and alone. Everyone feels sad, even depressed, but in our sadness we feel like we're the only sad ones in the world. When an artist is able to produce that feeling in me, especially in a work like this, i take special notice. Posted by: Kris at September 20, 2019 10:47 AM (OyyDO) 323

If you think of money as a government obligation then this chart should be a little disturbing. Look at the growth in central bank assets (money created and sent out into the markets) as a per cent of GDP for the G4, and you see it grew quite a bit during the financial crisis, and then went nuts afterwards. Still going.

and old wood everywhere, Great porch. Until I bought an old home (1924) and had to fix the damn thing. Ugh. NEVER again. Posted by: Cannibal Bob I think you need a metric fukton of money, and an army of people with the necessary skills, to turn such a house into a modern home. I lived in a circa-1850's house in NJ growing up. Full of charm and character, 12-foot ceilings in the downstairs, gorgeous woodworking throughout. Also drafty, 1940's plumbing, electric and heat, and generally in need of $100K plus in updates and repairs when my folks bought it in 1976 - money they never, ever had. Still love that old house, but yeah it was a mess. Posted by: DocJ at September 20, 2019 10:43 AM (77WPm) ... And you can thoroughly screw up an old house frame by mixing modern improvements. Those homes worked well, preservation-wise, because they were fairly drafty. Moisture got in, but it got back out. Seal it up with modern vapor barriers and what-not in the wrong way and you can start the clock on mold and mildew. I think those problems are probably mostly addressed if you simultaneously add an HVAC system. Posted by: TexasDan at September 20, 2019 10:49 AM (yL25O) 327

As to cloud computing, what this probably means is that MS will now have a monopoly on the O & G Bizness requirements. BUT in the case that MS wants to drop them, the O&G Bizness is big enough and wealthy enough that a good profit could be made by any group that wanted to set up a cloud business provider that only catered to oil and gas biz, and nothing else. A lot of that business is already industry specific. (But my bet is that MS will be happy to hang onto those profits)

My office used to be in an historic building (An old warehouse circa 1844) in Downtown Frederick MD. I first noticed something funky after the birth of my daughter. I was in the office after the restaurant closed downstairs when the opening and closing of doors told me something wasn't right. Went downstairs to see who was down there and found the building totally empty. I gathered my things and quick walked out of there when the pipe smoke commenced. Scared the shit out of me. Someone also greeted my first employee in to the office everyday at 0630 by saying hello or shifting things around an under stair closet. What drove me batty when working on a house like the above was when
adding a door, for example, the door would be plumb, level and square BUT it was hell to make it look right with the house that leaned towards Philadelphia, had a floor that dropped three inches in just that one corner and a wall that had a four inch bow in the eight foot run. You had to spend all day just making the new fit visually with the old. Posted by: Tonypete I had a few people in the family that specialized in the old houses, so my first real job out of high school was learning that trade. I did it for years, as much as the music thing allowed anyway, and it was always an adventure. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 20, 2019 11:28 AM (9Om/r) 490
