Saturday Morning Coffee Break

funny-pic-dump-9.png

***

Good morning Horde. Hope your Saturday has started on a positive note. In the meantime, let's review some stories that didn't get their fair share of attention here at the AoSHQ.

  • Ouch! Hell hath no fury as a woman pissed off.

  • Here's your chance for a new start. It helps if you speak Italian.

  • Not quite the camping trip they had in mind.

  • When you gotta go, you gotta go.

  • Raccoons & Valu-Rite

  • Talk about a party girl.

  • I can't remember what I had for supper last night. This guy remembers credit card numbers.

  • So much for a romantic dinner.

  • Genius Award Winners are in an Iranian prison. My sympathy meter is broken.

  • Did we lose a Moron?

Open thread. Enjoy these or anything else that comes to mind. Just a couple of rules: No running with sharp objects, no pissing in the pool and do not take bluebell's shanks.

    Have a great weekend!!!

Kind of annoyed that I missed the cuckold thread last night. I'm not going to read the comments because I'm sure it was epic.

There was a link on Insty yesterday that the free marketeers (with brains) now accept that they need to re-evaluate their views and arguments in light of current events. The assumption that corporations would simply focus on commerce and not try their hand at social engineering is no longer operative.

I still think the pharmaceutical industry has a hand in this. I haven't seen any numbers, but I'll bet that sales of nicotine gum and patches have taken a beating since vaping came along.

Some time ago I saw a cancer prevention event at a hospital. The exhibits all said that vaping was dangerous, and if you want to quit smoking, gum and patches are the only way to go. This was about a year ago, before the recent hysteria. It sounds orchestrated to me.

Hell, if "saving lives" and "public health" were the real issues, the government would be offering subsidies to smokers to get them to switch to vaping.

Just wait and see. Once the vape manufacturers are all bought out and taken over by Merck and Pfizer, they'll suddenly discover "safe" vaping products.

That's my understanding, too. It's basically street drugs. You have no idea what you're getting.

When I started vaping, I bought a disposable product with cartridges. I quickly discovered that it was made in China. I went online, did some research, and found Halo Cigs, who say that their e-liquids are made in the USA with pharmaceutical grade ingredients. I haven't had any problems with them.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at September 14, 2019 08:45 AM (aA3+G)

    Caution, Horde, math ahead*...

Per Cuisinart, it takes 100g of ground coffee to make a 12 cup pot (it only yields about 11 cups actually).

So a pound of coffee (454g) will make roughly 4.5 pots.

Now, a cup of coffee is defined as 6 fluid ounces. A standard size thermos holds about six 6 ounce cups.

Thusly, you should get about two full thermoses from one 12 cup pot. Which I know to be true, as I do this all the time.

So finally, we now know that a pound of coffee will make about 9 full thermoses.

And at $7 per thermos, Mis Hum, you're drinking some expensive shit there. 7*9 = $63 per pound.

    Mr. GotRocks.

*I'd promise not to do this again, but I'd be lying.

Yeah, the whole vaping foofaraw is Fake News.

If it was an honest campaign, it would be about not using DIY Illegal Drug Vaping.

Nicotine in and of itself isn't particularly bad for you. Some studies even show a big benefit for folks with Alzheimer's and memory issues.

It's along the lines of caffeine. Mildly addicting stimulant.

It's all the other crap in cigarette smoke that gives you health issues. Same with marijuana by the way.

So, this is about the usual leftard banning reflex that (probably) gets them bribe money from competitors (?).

I got no dog in this fight. I've never smoked.

One interesting thing - in Japan some of the "energy drinks" have nicotine in them.

A couple of years ago, I had really bad jet lag when I flew there so I grab one of those 1 shot energy drinks to slam down.

Man, it worked like magic. My thinking was so clear it was amazing.

So, I looked at the ingredients. Among the usual stuff was nicotine.

I think that what the difference was. Amazing.

Anyway, there's probably a market for "safe" nicotine out there without all the problems associated with smoking.

That's probably what this is about.

And as usual, the low-IQ Left is easy to lead by the nose for the benefit of Our Betters.

Like the main branch of the Denver Public Library getting NARCAN for every floor a few years ago so that when one of the lovely homeless drug-addled library residents OD's they can "save" them.

They have a couple regulars - regularly live there (we're talking decades), regularly shoot up there, regularly OD there, and now have been regularly saved using the handy NARCAN doses supplied by the city!

The first Presidential campaign I really watched closely (meaning that I understood how it was playing out) was Reagan - Carter, 1980. It was clearly early on the Reagan *owned* the Flag, and Carter hated it, never used. All Carters campaign materials were green, foreshadowing what the dems would do for the next 40 years, and also telegraphing to all that he despised the colors Red, White, and Blue.

And dems were astounded when working class voters took the lesson that Carter just didn't like America very much at all.

Also, started the Bill Burr special. He's not as clever and funny as Chapelle. Though he's got some funny lines.

181 The push behind killing the vaping industry is to kill the vaping industry, not to "save lives" or permit less dangerous alternatives.

Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at September 14, 2019 08:30 AM (lD3vL)

I travel a lot. Every trip to and from the airport is about $80.00. Every city I visit, two and from the airport or to meetings easily averages between $150-$200. I very easily replaced them for a trip to Chicago.

It's a shame really. The same two local guys usually pick me up. When I told them it was over they were blown away. I told them to go tell their company if they want to play politics and undermine people's rights this is the cost.

Somewhere along the way, I picked up a little bit of the etiquette on Naval flags, in the days of sail. You wanted a big flag with a single dominant color because at distance and in the smoke of battle, it was very difficult to make out details, and you wanted to be able to tell who was who at a glance. England probably picked Red because it was believed to be most visible (It also was a Royal Color) and they built the first big modern navy. (we know now that Yellow is more visible, but fire engines are still red)

The upper left hand corner of a naval flag is "The Jack". A ship flew a big version of The Jack when they were in harbor, and it was easy for everyone to see. Hence, the "Union Jack". An American Jack would be a field of blue with silver stars, nothing else.

one last trivia - In UK flag terms, "Union" applies to the Cross of St. George, represent England, overlaid on the Cross of St. Andrew, representing Scotland. Do the Cross of St. Andrew in Red and Blue, add some stars, and you've got the Confederate Battle Flag.

Scotland went broke and needed an English bailout, which united the two kingdoms in 1707.

After a failed rebellion in the Year of the French, Ireland was forced into union in 1801 and the Cross of St Patrick got added, giving us the now classic Union Jack, one of the great achievements in graphic design.

Vaping was never meant to be a way to quit.

It's a healthier alternative to smoking.

One happy effect is that more people quit smoking after they start vaping.

My guess is because vaping makes it clear that your "smoking" just to get nicotine.

Vaping doesn't have the cultural history and cache that cigarette smoking does.

Anywho, your thinking is wrong on this.

    And "disease vector"? what the...?

Nicotine is a legal and harmless "vice". Vaping makes getting it healthier and is more socially acceptable than stinking out everyone else in the surrounding area.

Sounds like he remembered where the grooves and curves were... which sounds weird, but ok. If someone says it on the internet, it must be true.

There is the story about the counterfeiter, from years ago, he hand painted, I think mostly 20 dollar bills, and was very very good at it. Spent lots of time in and out of prisons though, and eventually they put him away for good.

He took up painting artsy fartsy art, and it turns out people wanted his paintings! Sold many, for much more than $20, that took him much less time than it took to paint 20 dollar bills.

I'm about to write a blurb in software-ease about programming languages as a 4 or 5 hour expenditure of time and energy.
Basically 'splaining how one creates software from my own perspective.Since I am downright religious about C and Perl they will be the focus.
The intended audience is for one particular cat who is looking to get back into technology. I will approach it as if the reader thinks in logic and therefore understands how to reason through any problem.
Under duress, too. My wor-oh-wor is not unlike others, I'm just gonna see what I come up with (url to be listed later, maybe by pet thread time). From my heart, experience and utter disdain for what passes as software these days.
And to repeat from yesterday, thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

339 Eris, the Spithead and Noir mutinies were mutinies about pay and conditions on board the naval ships. It happened during the blockade on the French republic.

The red flag was the attack flag, and would signal the attack when it was taken down. The mutineers ran it up as an advisement, and it was eventually taken down, but it was a warning that the mutineers were aware of what they were doing.

Ever since then it was something of a symbol of revolt of the lower classes and may be why the Bolsheviks adopted it. I wonder if it is because of the mutiny on the Potemkin in Odessa, but I suppose it would be easy to look up*.

Anyhow "we don't like the image of revolution" is a tell on a group that has been loudly espousing revolution for 50 years.
They dropped the flag and didn't light off the candle.

(*the only thing I know about the Potemkin mutiny is from Eisenstein's movie, and it shows the rations were contaminated with earthworms. And the Odessa stairs thing. Bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp. Has anyone done a Slinky version of that?)
