The Saturday Night Joke

A friend told me about his trip out with his grandson. This is what he said. "Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My 6 year-old grandson asked if he could say grace."

As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food and I would thank you even more if Grandpa gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty, peace & justice for all. Amen!"

Along with the laughter and nodding of heads from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman at the next table remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why -- I never!"

Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong Grandpa? Is God mad at me?"

After I assured him that he had done a terrific job and that God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer." "Really?" my grandson asked.

"Cross my heart," the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is sometimes good for the soul."

Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his ice cream for a moment, and then he did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman.

With a big smile he looked her in the eye and told her, "Here ma'am, this is for you, you grouchy old bitch. You must be a Democrat, shove it up your ass and cool off!"

Kinda brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it! H/T Legally Sufficient

There could be a newly named arena in Miami. The BBC?

The American Airlines Arena, aka The AAA, has been the home of Miami Heat since its construction in 1999. The times are changing, though, and American Airlines last year announced it was no longer looking to renew its sponsorship of the venue. A bidding war has begun, as companies jostle to become synonymous with the arena. If things go a certain online porn site's way, the Heat could soon be playing basketball games in The BangBros Center.

BangBros, a Miami-based porn site, said it has bid $10 million for 10 years of naming rights. The company said via tweet that it wishes to call the venue the BangBros Center, or BBC. You may need to UrbanDictionary what that acronym means, because the company definitely isn't alluding to the British Broadcast Corporation.

McDonalds is looking towards using AI in the drive-thru.

McDonald's is to replace human servers with voice-based technology in its US drive-throughs.

The fast-food chain hopes the AI technology will make the ordering process more efficient.

McDonald's is implementing the technology with the help of start-up Apprente, which it acquired this week.

The move comes amid concern about workers whose jobs may become obsolete as a result of automation and new technologies.

Tojo, the rum loving US "Airman".

Back in April 1943, in the depths of the Second World War, an American B-17 crash landed in the seaside town of Clonakilty, County Cork, southern Ireland.

Local Irish residents were astonished to find that one of the crew members who had landed in their midst wasn’t actually an American or, in fact, a human being at all.

Rather, he was a small monkey called Tojo who’d been taken from his home in Morocco and placed aboard an American war plane which went by the name of “T’ain’t a Bird”.

Why does one eat plant based burgers? Virtue signaling? They certainly don't sound overly healthy.

The title question is being asked by Kate Bernot at The Takeout, and it’s a good one. Before anyone starts imagining a totally meatless future (speaking of horror shows), we should figure out why so many people are flocking to plant-based “meat” like the Impossible Whopper and its cousins. Since experts are quickly concluding that these products are no healthier for you (or for the environment) than their traditional animal-based counterparts, what’s the attraction making these offerings sustainable?

(Insert record scratch sound effect here.) Whoa! Hold on one second. Did someone just say that these “impossible” foods aren’t any better for you? Wasn’t that supposed to be the whole idea? As it turns out, they’re not. So the people peddling them had better figure out another market hook if they want their businesses to continue booming.

Once again, The ONT Is Looking Out For You TM

A new research, based on data collected from some 3,500 people living in Switzerland, was published Monday in the journal Heart. The research found new evidence that daytime naps may be related towards a lower risk of heart attack or stroke. There’s a catch, however: the naps should only be limited to a few times a week.

Research lead author Nadine Häusler, an internist at the University Hospital of Lausanne, stated that they looked into the lives of healthy adults. They found out that “people who take occasional naps — once or twice a week — had a lower risk for cardiovascular disease compared to people who were not napping at all.

It has taken many years. But, it has finally happened, Bob Ross art makes it to the Smithsonian.

In 1994, Bob Ross told talk show host Phil Donahue that his paintings would likely never hang in the Smithsonian, but it looks like the famous PBS painter may have spoken too soon.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. acquired four authentic Bob Ross paintings in March along with his original easel made from a step stool, paint brushes, and the palette used on The Joy of Painting, the now-classic public television show he hosted from 1983 to 1994, says Sarah Strohl, executive assistant at Bob Ross Inc., the company started by Ross that now manages his brand. When Strohl stumbled upon Ross’s quote about his work never hanging in the Smithsonian, she was inspired to land at least one of his paintings there. “It was through a love of Bob and also being like, ‘No Bob, you’re wrong. You need to be in the Smithsonian.”

It now costs $350,000 a year to live a middle-class lifestyle in a big city—here’s a sad breakdown of why

Here’s a sad reality: In order to raise a family in an expensive coastal city like San Francisco or New York, you’ve now got to make $350,000 or more a year.

You can certainly live on less, but it won’t be easy if your goal is to raise a family, save for your children’s education, save for your own home and save for retirement (so you can actually retire by a reasonable age).

A middle-class lifestyle is a reasonable ask. But thanks to inflation, it has gotten a lot more expensive if you want to have children. The median wealth of middle-income Americans has stayed flat for years, at about $87,140, according to the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances. Yet, prices for things such as housing and college tuition have risen tremendously.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. Guess orange wine is a no-go for the upper crust of New York.

Over the weekend, the New Yorker published a weird story that attempts to, once and for all, stop Big Orange Wine. In it, the author talks about visiting the land where this strange beverage has become de rigueur: an Italian restaurant in Brooklyn, where (gasp!) the children’s menu has cheese older than some of its audience and all the wines are natural. And what was learned on this journey? That, uh, orange wine is not really about tasting good so much as it is about challenging your taste buds.

The story reads like one long troll, with the author describing his unpleasant experiences of drinking orange wines. He finds “undertones of acid reflux” in one, saying drinking it was “a test of stamina.” He identifies what might’ve been “a hint of Goodyear rubber” in a Sicilian wine. In talking about an orange wine he actually likes, the 2017 Domaine Glinavos Paleokerisio, he notes that some orange wine geeks actually don’t like it because of “its extreme pleasantness” and determines that orange wine mania is a trend driven by the “fervor of ideologues.” Ultimately, orange wine is just another style of fermented grape juice but “an especially dramatic example of aggressions against taste buds.” (Grub Street, for our part, likens orange wine to Bon Iver: Maybe it’s not to everyone’s taste, but there are many moments of joy to be found for the people who do like it.)

Spilling coffee is a no-no in my book. Spilling coffee on the control panel of a jet: Genius Award Winner.

A passenger aircraft with 337 people on board was forced to divert in February after the pilot spilled coffee on the controls panel, UK investigators say.

The Airbus A330-243 from Frankfurt, Germany, to Cancun, Mexico, had to land in Shannon, Ireland, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) reports .

This was because the pilots' audio control panels (ACP) started melting and there was smoke in the cockpit.

The pilots had to use oxygen masks. There were no injuries.

And yes, Orange Wine Bad. I haven't read the article yet but I think Orange wine is the organic stuff done with wild yeasts and no added sulfites etc. The ones I tried were funky in a bad way. Mike Judge apparently has gotten only one thing wrong with his documentary Idiocracy. Not Sure could have simply gone on a week-long bender in Yukon instead of being cryogenically frozen for hundreds of years.

Idiocracy is gestating rapidly.

I found I had to be VERY disciplined in retirement. It's best to have general plan for your day. Days in retirement can disintegrate easily.

I was offered a paid job yesterday to sort through organize and dispose of a college professor's detritus, plus the contents of two estates she inherited. The work included a trip to Martha's Vineyard.

Now, after 5 years I've given all that up except for one very part time gig i can always reject if I so choose. Life is great. No way could I go back to working a regular job. I think it depends on

a) Is your job your "identity"? Do you hang out with the folks you work with or do you hang out with folks you know from other places?

b) How disciplined are you? Are you gonna fall into a cycle of sloth and laziness when you don't have a schedule you are forced to adhere to? (Raising hand here.)

c) How bad do you hate your job? (8 on the hatred scale for me me when I left.)

This. I've talked it over with sundry friends, and the consensus is that the pressure to get things done is largely gone.

Stuff you used to have to get done on weekends, you can now do when ever you get around to it. Discipline is lost.

The upcoming "Ghostbuster" sequel will focus on the descendants of the original ghost-catchers who rushed around New York City in proton packs and jumpsuits.

Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd revealed details of the new film, saying it is expected out next year and will star Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon and McKenna Grace. Reitman directed the original 1984 film and Aykroyd co-wrote and co-starred in it. Reitman's son, Jason, is directing the new movie.

At YT recently, I was watching an old (195 telecast of a videotaped (!) Fred Astaire special, An Evening With Fred Astaire.

Anyway, it actually contained the sponsor messages. The show starts with Chrysler sharing models of all their lines at the time, which were Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto and Imperial.

I admit DeSoto and Imperial were eye-openers for me. I thought they were just models, not actual makes at one time.

(I've since learned, Chrysler has now spun off Ram as a full model line.)

320 to be honest, I've tried to like She Wants Revenge for awhile, but I just can't. Except for "She Will Always Be A Broken Girl".

SWR consists of a beat poet backed by a band. It's not really music. The obvious parallel is Joy Division but in their case, Hook and Sumner were composing the music and they got Curtis to write his poetry over that. So Joy Division works as music, not just as poetry.

321 Insomniac,

I've been having my own Year of General Suckage, with the loss of income and and general uncertainty that comes along with it. Had a few hits on my resume only to have the contacts ghost me for one reason or the other.

Got a bunch of folks praying for me, and I pray for myself and others. but brother, it gets hard to stay positive when you see your savings dwindling to zilch. I do believe God has a plan for us both. For what it's worth, I've been looking into becoming a substitute teacher. Always enjoyed sharing knowledge with kids. It would be a departure from my current profession, but I've taken tentative steps and challenging God to make it happen if it's His will.

Anyway, do some thinking on what your own choice for a career do-over might look like, and maybe go from there.

Godspeed and God bless,

Al

I do believe God has a plan for us both. For what it's worth, I've been looking into becoming a substitute teacher. Always enjoyed sharing knowledge with kids. It would be a departure from my current profession, but I've taken tentative steps and challenging God to make it happen if it's His will.

Anyway, do some thinking on what your own choice for a career do-over might look like, and maybe go from there.

At 52 I had a decent accounting practice. At the same time 50 to 60 hours a week at the office and another 12 to 14 in the car I felt like a boarder in my own house. I think my wife and son felt the same way. I quit my practice and took a job as custodian at the local elementary school in the small town near where I live. More than a few people thought I had gone nuts. It was a considerable hit to our finances. I dont have room here to tell you what a blessing in my life that was. Most fun I have ever had at a job. I still run a BB program for the kids....

The quiet sojourn is the Way of the Warrior.

Astride a Gold Wing at 3 am in the Nevada desert, and the next town on the map is nearly 200 miles ahead. Just you, the bike, the road and the stars. And your thoughts.

Heeled hard over on a beam reach on twenty knot winds and four foot seas, nary a bit of land to be imagined for the next two days.

Day is night and night is day; it is yours to hold the course and keep watch, there is no other crew to call to the helm. Alone, but for your thoughts.

Hunting solo a day off the trailhead. It's you and the buck, and he can out-smell you, out-walk you, damn sure out-run you and damn near out-think you.

But not quite that, the last, and there lies your edge.

Because of your thoughts.

The Quiet Hours are where the Warriors live, learn, love and thrive.

Pretty cool place, and welcoming too, but they demand that YOU make the first embrace.

The rest is Providence, and Grace.

Yeah. It's getting clear it's a lynchpin of my long-standing depression. It's easy for a young boy to blame God for the things in his life going wrong; when his brain chemistry is subtly wrong...and it doesn't get figured out for decades...well. Let's just say I can see where Insomniac comes from in that department. I try to fight it but it's kept me from going to church even when I want to. Hell, when I do I cry nearly the whole time.

That's why I shitpost most of the time. I do anything else and the abyss beckons.

379 This abyss -- that's a metaphor. What it's a metaphor of, that could be totally real. But there's no abyss.

Keep dealing with what's real and commit yourself totally to what's true, and you'll be fine. If you're already doing that, then I say you are fine, despite what you may feel.

Simple as this (and complex as hell)

You gots to be DOING something while in the quiet zone, for all this to be working for you.

Hippieville, but hike the damn Appalachian Trail if you gotta. Or whatever is in your local A.O.

I never have ridden a motorcycle on my own but I can certainly see the allure of your scenario. The sailing alone scenario is one I have thought about from time to time. It is a metaphor and also something I would like to do one day.

I have hunted alone a few times and those were the most spiritual and successful hunts I have ever done. It was years ago but I got two bucks, boone and crocket type bucks, hunting alone, not even a stand. I think I will get my license this year, thanks for the reminder and inspiration.

The 2019 Michigan MoMe is next weekend!!!

Join us September 20 & 21 in the greater metropolitan area of Chelsea, Michigan for the festivities.

Friday night, we dine in Hell. Literally. We'll be at the Hell Saloon in Hell, Michigan for dinner around 6:30-ish. After dinner, we'll return to the cabin campsite built on the cursed ancient Indian burial ground just down the road from the state prison for the criminally insane for ukulele practice.

During the day on Saturday, we'll be hanging out at the cabin, whittling entire trees into toothpicks & just generally relaxing. The roundtable discussion topic this year is "IKEA Shelving: Threat or Menace?", followed by small unit tactics practice.

Saturday evening we'll go in to town for diner at the BBQ joint around 4:30; after which we'll return to the campsite for a large thermal event & pants-less dancing to the finest ukulele band in all the land.

If you have a sense of adventure & questionable judgement, there are a limited number of berths still available in the bunk-house style cabin. Let us know if you plan on over-nighting on site.

Click the link in the sidebar for more details. If you signed up prior to 06SEP19 but did not receive a confirmation e-mail, please sign up again.

I am now very worried about hunting license databases. I am guessing they are not regularly purged of PII and could easily be used by someone like Betoff or Berni to find gun owners.

I know that the Muni and City IDs are scrubbed of data that allows Illegals to be found.

I guess I need to check and see if TX is holding PII.

My meeting with two state level Kansas officials went well. My paperwork was in very god shape, just what was needed to request Federal dollars for my political sub-unit. Except ....

I need two more letters, signed by a bunch of people, and another all-singing, all-dancing spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is a more detailed telling of what is in the other spreadsheet, and must harmonize and tell a story. Sigh.

Federal dollars come with requirements that large cities can easily accomplish, not small rural areas.

I say the difference is that we accept that the process, however imperfect, is working as designed and it's operating as well as in can in an environment it was never intended for - an electorate that is actively deceived by the PR organ of an avowed enemy that has embedded itself in the state. Whereas the commies complain that the process is unfair whenever they lose, which is why they try to do things like dismantle the electoral college or impeach on what amounts to a bill of attainder. Because they are juveniles, who flip the board over and cry whenever they're losing.

I've fixed a couple that don't drain. Check the reversing valve on the pump. They are an extra shitty design and fail often. $5 part killing a $500 machine. Suprisingly this happens so often that replacements are available on Amazon.

I'm also confused.

Several cases are in progress that look to restore the old standard of libel protection.

The left is currently making a very strong case for doing just that. Each baseless, reputation-destroying lie they spread about Kavanaugh will be added to the legal brief arguing that this is not "protected speech" and that reputations are being destroyed without any legal recourse.

The left is its own worst enemy.

Those were the good ol' days, before they regulated the phosphates out. Now setting even the original models to 10 and three-quarters will result in a fine.

Apparently the casclidiation adapter gets too brittle and releases CO2.

Yes, and worse, the retrofit to the original models to support the Internet of Things (so your intabulator settings were instantly reported to the Bureau of Things) was very costly! It was much cheaper to just get the modern EU approved model intabulator and get the digital henweigh upgrade as well.
