Brexit risks dinosaur attacks in London,
warns Brussels-funded CBI.

Plus other horrors

Victor Davis Hanson has written a piece entitled, Is England Still Part of Europe? (h/t J.J. Sefton) Interesting to hear a reference to "England" instead of "Britain" these days.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is desperate to translate the British public's June 2016 vote to leave the European Union into a concrete Brexit.

But the real issue is far older and more important than whether 52 percent of Britain finally became understandably aggrieved by the increasingly anti-democratic and German-controlled European Union.

England is an island. Historically, politically and linguistically, it was never permanently or fully integrated into European culture and traditions.

The story of Britain has mostly been about conflict with France, Germany or Spain. . .

The 18th century British and Scottish Enlightenment of Edmund Burke, David Hume, John Locke and Adam Smith emphasized individualism, freedom and liberty far more than the government-enforced equality of result that was favored by French Enlightenment thinkers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is no accident that the American Revolution was founded on the idea of individual freedom and liberty, unlike the later French Revolution's violent effort to redistribute income and deprive "enemies of the people" of their rights and even their lives.

He outlines some reasons Britain might want to leave the EU.

Britain has a last chance to re-embrace the free-market democratic world that it once helped to create -- and distance itself from the creeping statism it once opposed.

Elites in Britain and Europe oppose Brexit, of course. But the EU has reasons, in addition to the loss of Britain, to oppose Brexit. For example.

The dissident Visegrad Group, comprised of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, seeks to create a mini-alliance inside the EU that promotes secure borders, legal immigration only, nuclear power, and traditional values and Christianity.

Who needs challenges to the EU's central planners like that?

The EU bureaucracy seems to have a grand vision for Europe. It may include dissidents from abroad, but who needs dissidents from within Europe?

What's going on in Britain?

I don't really understand all the maneuvering that is going on in Britain. A lot of people are recommending this piece by Christopher Caldwell on why Brexit hasn't happened yet, from August. It may be helpful in understanding the British Parliament.

This week, people are mad at Ringo Starr, because someone dug up a 2017 interview in which he favored Brexit. J.J. Sefton also picked up a piece on who supports and who opposes Brexit. With some recent news.

Music

Can someone explain Eurovision, the music contest, to me?

A reminder that European culture did not start with the EEC, or with Eurovision. The Eurovision theme may be the best part of the program. At least in its original form. Marc Antoine Charpentier wrote both serious Catholic music and light-hearted incidental music for Moliere's comedies. He lived in the 1600s, but he began his career working for a woman.

I think it's interesting that some of those old horns are played with one hand.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Ah, the California dipsy-doodle. California is oh so green, and will get 200% of its power from "renewable resources," by which they do not mean Democrat idiocy, which God knows is available in abundance.

Meanwhile California politicians crow about the "progress" they've made in that direction. How did they do it? Easy. For SoCal, at least, they buy the electricity - at top dollar - from a nuclear reactor in ... Arizona. There is no other way to do it. You cannot back up one unreliable source of energy with another unreliable source of energy. Solar panels don't work at all at night, and they don't put out their rated capacity except when the Sun is high in the sky.

And wind is randomly unreliable, except that, in general, there is less wind at night, because wind itself is the result of the Sun's heat.

Of course. But right near us is a gas-powered power plant (which is probably on Death Row), and a nuclear power plant that is being (maybe by now has been) shut down.

But rather than building more gas- or nuclear-powered plants, they buy electricity from more sensible places. Solar and wind contributions to the grid are negligible even under ideal conditions. They are to power generation as a backyard vegetable patch is to agriculture.

Americans don't realize this, but by our standards, Europeans are poor. Not so much in Germany, but all the rest of Europe is poor.

Sitting in the living room at a colleague's house that had two sofas facing each other, we had to correlate our movements. We're both over six feet, and our knees had to be interdigitated, the room was that small.

Shortly before leaving, my wife and I were looking to buy a house. The realtor showed us a place that included a room in which I could literally touch opposite walls. The "backyard" was literally about five feet on a side. When washing dishes at the sink, you could literally shake hands with passersby on the sidewalk.

In each case, I am using "literally" as it was meant to be used.

92 There is no other way to do it.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 14, 2019 12:20 PM (jEgzt)

The discussion I heard was that when you use wind and solar you need some storage to even out the variation in production, but since that is expensive, they just use the transmission network in place of storage. this causes problems in distribution and production that needs to go on line immediately to compensate for low wind or clouds. It will get worse as more wind and solar capacity gets added to the system.

There's no denying that a thorium reactor can be built. India has done it, since they are the only country in the world that has a place to mine thorium.

Uranium reactors work, too, and we already know how to build them. The "nuclear waste issue" is red herring.

Thorium reactors are pimped out by the greenies who want to shut down all nuclear power. Get aged-out uranium plants closed, and delay the building of new ones by promising a mythical "better way".

***PSA***

The 2019 Michigan MoMe is next weekend!!!

Join us September 20 & 21 in the greater metropolitan area of Chelsea, Michigan for the festivities.

Friday night, we dine in Hell. Literally. We'll be at the Hell Saloon in Hell, Michigan for dinner around 6:30-ish. After dinner, we'll return to the cabin campsite built on the cursed ancient Indian burial ground just down the road from the state prison for the criminally insane for ukulele practice.

During the day on Saturday, we'll be hanging out at the cabin, whittling entire trees into toothpicks & just generally relaxing. The roundtable discussion topic this year is "IKEA Shelving: Threat or Menace?", followed by small unit tactics practice.

Saturday evening we'll go in to town for diner at the BBQ joint around 4:30; after which we'll return to the campsite for a large thermal event & pants-less dancing to the finest ukulele band in all the land.

If you have a sense of adventure & questionable judgement, there are a limited number of berths still available in the bunk-house style cabin. Let us know if you plan on over-nighting on site.

Click the link in the sidebar for more details. If you signed up prior to 06SEP19 but did not receive a confirmation e-mail, please sign up again.

Kilts, hats with a feather, big belt buckle, weird sicks etc etc. They sat at a table at the hotel bar and invited me over when they heard the american accent while talking to the bar tender. They seemed cool at first, they were bitching about how england "stole" their country, etc etc. Then the topic turned to guns, and they asked if I had any. I said most americans do. The one dude says its the cowards way, you need to use an axe or a sword. The it switched back to england stealing their country. At this point I said well england tried to steal ours, and we threw them the fuck out, whats your excuse? Then I said oh right, we used guns.

I draw Social Security now that I'm retired, so I guess I would be in the "90%" here, then?

In addition, when I hit a certain age, I signed up for Medicare, even though I have private health insurance. "90%" bell rings again?

I wonder if the 90% in Scotland isn't comprised disproportionately of pensioners? I suspect whoever came up with "90%" had an agenda, & a motive to cast the widest possible net. Also, every UK citizen is in the NHS, right? So why isn't the figure 100%, instead of 90%?
