The contacts made at college can help, but many have connections going back to their family, or their high school friends if they hung out in certain cliques, or various political favors. SOME of that used to be OK, in that it maintained a certain social order, but the flip side is it became MOSTLY about maintaining certain privilege. Not White Privilege, but certain families maintaining power.

That may have morphed into what we have today, with the leftists cancel culture extending their political clout into academia and now across the corporate world. But I think BigMoney was in control for a long time, and the 20 globalist banks running trillions still pull the strings on their puppets.

For the individual, being independent of that may have a cost, but liberty and America's future lies with thinkers not tied to TheBoss.

250 BTW about SSA

They KNOW who's doubling or tripling or whatever on an account number.

They have records that are filed under that number.

So finding and prosecuting those who use fake SS numbers could be found arrested and deported.

But it doesn't happen. I imagine that they were concerned about a national ID at the time so they made rules that the SSA can't give out that data to even Congress and def. not to FBI or LE.

Now that it's so widespread, we might as well make it official but only if as part of the deal that all the people using a fake id get arrested and if they're here illegally they get deported.

255 another surprising painting. i'm more familiar with signac's landscapes and i expect this is earlier. even though he breaks up the color with points and models with hue rather than tone, you get the sense he's applying a pointillist scrim to an otherwise traditional interior scene.

seurat is much different. he not only breaks down colors, he reduces the things to basic shapes placed in an ordered space. sometimes he even employs the golden section as an organizing principle. it's approach is a more fundamental restructuring of a painting.

286 The whole "hard work" vs "social connections" debate seems weird to me and it feels like both sides are generalizing to the entire workforce what is true in certain circumstances.

I feel like the people who are saying hard work doesn't mean much are saying so because they're talking about a sector of the economy where the labor market is oversaturated. Obviously when law schools are pumping out way more graduates with law degrees than there are actual legal jobs for those people, then your hard work isn't going to matter very much because your hard work isn't going to stand out. Same goes for creative endeavors. You need someone to notice you to get produced or published or whatever.

But you can't tell me that your average engineer isn't going to benefit from hard work. None of my friends in engineering school got their jobs based on connections they made (unless you count internships they did in college, which is just a slightly earlier way to apply for the job). Same goes for people doing trade work. Your plumber or electrician is going to make money directly proportional to the work they put in.

Disabled people in Canada have been pushed toward euthanasia by bureaucrats denying the kind of independent living support that would help a suicidal disabled person want to live - who then offered the patient euthanasia instead.

And then this lovely WH correspondent for the Las Vegas Review Journal tweeted this in response:

They never will be missed.

She's taking some major blow black.

@debrajsaunders

This is a reference to a Gilbert & Sullivan song in The Mikado. The Lord High Executioner has a "little list" of people who "never will be missed." I was making a statement about how easy it is for some to decide others, inconvenient people, can go.

yeah, my engineering friends were flying around interviewing and got good jobs. But I think the DC DeepState think is a different realm of controlled power. That also extends into certain communities of government workers saving certain jobs for friends and family, and they are expected to serve TheMachine.

In Illinois, Madigan is the heir to TheBoss Daly, after Daly the son was done. Now the Madigan daughter who was AG for a long time, is joining a powerful IL/DC law firm Kirkland and Ellis, which AG William Barr also worked for before becoming AG. Barr's father also hired Epstein at one point (or was it Epstein's father?) ... then left the position ...

so many strange connections, but yes, engineer types can still get good jobs based on their abilities, though even that is often outsourced making the path not so clear.

393 It's a strange balance to have to maintain in a job interview when they ask that "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" question. If you see yourself doing the job you're being interviewed for, you have no ambition. If you see yourself further ahead on the ladder, you have no commitment to the job you're being interviewed for and are just looking at it as a stepping stone.

417 Agree 100% with dress. My rule of thumb is, whatever the office dress code is, go one step above. If everyone is wearing jeans, wear slacks. If everyone is wearing slacks and a polo, wear slacks and a dress shirt, and so on.
Posted by: Lurking Lurker - Not In My Purview at September 13, 2019 10:34 AM (FiUMj)

One of the worst things, IMO, embraced by HR departments everywhere is casual Friday, which for many corporate offices, has devolved into casual workweek. IMO, the more casual you dress, the less serious you feel toward your job. Even people like Richard Rawlins, of GasMonkey Garage Rehab fame, makes sure that every garage he remodels provides classy uniform shirts for employees with the company's logo because it projects professionalism.
So much of the USA dresses like crap in their daily life, whether it's shopping, dinner out, etc. And it's carried over into the workplace. I've noticed many businesses , including banks are trying to reverse this trend by providing logo shirts, etc. But corporate offices are still behind.

463 373 STEM jobs are based on what you can demonstrate in skill. You don't need a degree if you can code. You don't need connections, of the social type, if you can do the math.

Those cone-like hipster things with barely any brim are not *real* fedoras. You want something like men wore in the Thirties or Forties, with a tall straight-sided crown and a noticeable brim. Sadly, even Stetson doesn't make those any more. You have to go vintage, or have one custom-made.

465 446 Chappelle's special was a 6 or 7 of 10 on the Chappelle index. It was an 11 on the Current Year Comedy index. That says a lot. A real comic just has to tell the truth, and he's funnier than anyone else these days - not a lot of effort needed there.

Bare metal roofing on the board is quite noisy. If you drop an insulation layer between, it is not. And is durable, fire resistant, less likely to be chainsawed open by mutants during face colander time, and is available in lovely colors!

She's been done since she started.

She had the NYT in her back pocket, but the NYT was never able to convince the hoi polloi to like her.

Even the NYT abandoned her weeks back.

She's lost her media support and she has never developed popular support.

It's going to be hilarious when she finishes 3rd or 4th in the California primary.

526 519 I have a felt fedora-ish (I don't really know hat design) that I bought back in the 90's. It's getting a little battered and worn.

I wear it when I'm walking the dog. It keeps rain off well and it makes me look a little less scary. It's bad enough that I'm a large bald man with a rottweiler

The hat does keep my head warm, though. It does not have vents, so I have to keep taking it off to let my head breathe when it's warm out.

541 I've noticed the big trends in dress tend to go back to old European regional sensibilities. Midwestern dress, which has spread everywhere during my life, is reflective of its central European/Northern European origins and their belief that everyone should look like some unisex peasant from the Baltic coast and no one should dare to stand out.

On the other side, you've got the Southern European view, especially from the French and the Italians, who have always known that "Girls go crazy for a Sharp Dressed Man." And as to women's styles - who would any man rather be seen with, some pudgy east German hausfrau, or an Italian Diva?

The Italians screw up a lot of things, but damn do they know how to Look Good while they're doing it.

STEM jobs are based on what you can demonstrate in skill. You don't

type, if you can do the math.

Now the managers are all about who they went to college with. And they are 90% worthless and pointless.

Seaxes

You can tell the designs that worked well for actual fighting. They're rare cause they were used until they wore out.

The stuff in the graves and barrows is all ceremonial mostly.

Full of jewels and engravings and such.

A real marauders weapon was a simple piece of iron with maybe a blood groove and with both edges sharp with a point.

The point was necessary when they went toe to toe in a shield line. The guy behind you would stab over you and your shield to the guy on the front opposite while you stabbed under your shield to get them in the leg or ankles.

You don't see the real tactics they use in sword fighting in movies.

They go for the ankles and the shoulders. Stabbing either. They don't spend a lot of time clashing steel together.
