A Terminator Needs a Man Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle

Uggh.

It's not that this is a feminist Terminator -- most Terminator movies (and most James Cameron movies, period) have a feminist agitprop message.

It just looks so, so dull and so done to death.

Haven't we seen a version of this several times before? Versions that didn't suck?

T2 was a good movie, but it did something that wasn't good for a Terminator series: By remaking T1's chase plot, it established the template, the rule really, that all Terminator movies must be chase movies where the Good Terminator wants to save the person and the Bad Terminator wants to kill the person.

All T2 did was add a short sidequest about killing some black asthmatic.

If T2 pushed a different kind of plot, it would have established that a lot of different things can happen in the Terminator universe, apart from one Terminator chasing a somewhat older and more Arnoldian Terminator.

Running the chase plot twice in a row set in stone the Terminator formula, and that formula, while great for two movies, gets really old and played out after six.

It was the right decision for a one-shot sequel, but the wrong decision for an ongoing series.

So here we go again. Thirty five years on, and we have another Good Terminator trying to save a person from a Bad Terminator in a chase plot.

Oh, and this Terminator can do New Tricks -- another part of the formula established with T2 and slavishly held to every since.

This one seems to be completely serious and humorless. A "dark and gritty" reboot of the Terminator franchise.

Ugh. No one wants to see that. This is all dumb lowest-common-denominator chase plot nonsense. It's basically a superhero movie, but with plainclothes.

You really think you call sell us on a "dark and gritty" nonsense superhero chase plot movie just by having an old woman growl something about "fate" every three minutes?

Hey, Terminator: The DCEU called. It says it wants its disappointing box office back.

I always preferred the first one. Though the second one had very good VFX and action.

107 And Aliens. But T3 and beyond, and Alien 3 or whatever it was called, and beyond, were sequels too far.

That's pretty much where I draw the line as well. For example, a fair chunk of the special effects/drama in T3, like the crane smashing multiple buildings, don't begin to pass the smell test.

118 it's a comedy, with action.

All the sci-fi stuff needs vulnerable machines, when really, it would be more like iron-man ... where the bad guys hold the hostages, and his rockets take out all the bad guys at once, almost instantly. (and that would be "old tech" in T5 times)

Why would a robot so advanced allow a human to even get close with a gun? It would kill them in an instant from 100 (1000?) yards. Or it sends out a 100 little drones and kills everyone in an instant. Or how about laser tech ... we already have that ... it could just laser every target through the eyeball in an instant. But they need the action and drama, so that doesn't work.

I agree. it's not some complicated "laws of physics" that are routinely being violated, but really basic conservation of momentum and mass. All the time in most of these movies.

Also, it happens in kung fu movies (and movies with kung fu fights) all the time too. Some 100-lb Asian guy standing stock still will put a "Buddha's Hand" strike on a 280-pound baddies chest and sending him flying backwards through a brick wall. Etc. Yeah.

182 I disliked, or maybe was just disappointed by, T2. T1 had been original; you never knew what was going to happen; the heroes were human, the villain not; and the dialog sparkled and crackled. T2, as you say, ace, was pretty much a chase sequence, and it lacked that zip that the first had.

So I haven't seen any of the others. Why do we need a "dark and gritty" reboot? The first film was pretty darn gritty all by itself.

190 181 I agree. it's not some complicated "laws of physics" that are routinely being violated, but really basic conservation of momentum and mass.

Etc. Yeah.

I think there are a couple of conflicting stories around.

The one I know is that Lance Henrickson was slotted to play the Terminator then Cameron found Arnold and just knew he'd make a great bad guy.

The idea behind Lance being the Terminator (easily hidden in plain sight) got reused in T2 with the T1000 played by Robert Patrick.

"What did he say?"
"He said a storm is coming."
(Sarah looks off into the distance, considering the future and the human-cyborg apocalyse that looms)
"I know. . . ."
(Thunderous music as she slams the jeep into gear and drives off into the mountains)

There was *nothing* half as good as this kind of dialog in T2. If any of the later sequels came close to this, I'd like to know.

260 Max Power --

Actually, I remember at the time that people were very interested in the "flash-forwards" of the robot vs. humanity war, because Cameron made it look so cool.

He probably couldn't have sustained that for a whole movie just for budgetary/FX reasons not to mention dubious writing skills, but that would've been a more interesting approach: Having saved John Conner, show the future being reclaimed from the 'bots.

But then, as Carpenter proved with "Halloween 3", people don't go to sequels to see something different.

Skynet sends the Terminator back to get John Connor, but misses the date and sends the Terminator to 1930's Germany. The Terminator gets weirded out and thinks that this could be the way to get John Connor by signing up with the Nazis.

The British get wind of the unstoppable Nazi battle-bot and decide that it has to be destroyed with secret agents, but they are betrayed and mostly killed by the Terminator. A young Ian Fleming is the only agent to survive and he has to recruit allies to figure out how to take down the Terminator before the Nazis launch WWII and win, destroying John Connors family line before his mother can be born.

Reese said that after the original Terminator went through to the past, and after he himself went through, the humans destroyed the time travel machinery. There could not be any more trips into the past, by anyone. So how come we have all these cyborgs and humans or whatever blithely leaping into the 1980s?

Unless Skynet rebuilt the time travel device.

Or unless something stopped the humans from destroying it as they told Reese they were going to do.

But I never heard that mentioned by anybody in T2. Did it ever get brought up in any of the other films, or the TV series?

The story I've always heard is that Cameron wanted him to play Reese, the human soldier. He said, no; I want to play the Terminator. Now whether that was because it was the title role, because he knew that all eyes and minds would be focused on that character onscreen or off, or because he knew his acting skills were not that great, I don't know.

But he made the right call.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at August 30, 2019 01:35 PM (ClOmq)

I think there are a couple of conflicting stories around.

The one I know is that Lance Henrickson was slotted to play the Terminator then Cameron found Arnold and just knew he'd make a great bad guy.

The idea behind Lance being the Terminator (easily hidden in plain sight) got reused in T2 with the T1000 played by Robert Patrick.
========
Having seen Aliens many many times, I can see Lance Henrickson as the Terminator and doing a good job. But Ah-nuld was the man. He got it down, the cold inhuman expression, the matching speech pattern, the hidden strength under control, and the sense of inexorable pursuit. It was his role after that.

That dark bluish-gray look. I keep saying, "Have these people never heard of Technicolor?"

341 >> 297 Who's seen "Russian Terminator?" Show of hands?

Kenny Rogers looks great in that. I just wished they would of fleshed out Ricky Schroder's character more.

338 But if the terminator succeeds then John Connor would never be born, so Skynet would never need to send the terminator back!

Did you ever think of that, huh?

I think the terminator would then leave a note or talk to baby skynet.

343 old kung foo type movies ... they are so pure of thought, they tap into the supernatural. Isn't that why they can go beyond natural law physics? It's "magic". (Big Trouble in Little China shows that, but in a comical way ... favorite part, when they take the drug, going down the elevator ... all smiling "I feel pretty good about this" ... ha)

But part of that China lore is how they are pure, while the West is full of dirty capitalists. hahahaha ... China has young prostitution everywhere ... despite it being illegal. But they still get to mock us dirty Westerners ... because the world revolves around China, center of the universe.

These China ADV guys take on that topic ... young daughters from out back often get sold into prostitution, to pay for education for the (more important) son. Not all Chinese participate, but it is prevalent everywhere. ...

That's a reason that Limitless (movie and TV show) was so interesting. It would use warm hues to indicate the influence of an intelligence boosting drug

347 So let me get this straight. Our savior is a latino, usually in the back of a pick-up looking like an illegal immigrant being chased by a Terminator disguised as a border patrol agent.

Really?

Really?

Oh sure, no symbolism there. Naaaaahhhh.

351 I'm shocked that Hamilton stayed on the project after the studio execs said stupid shit about this being the "first Terminator movie with strong female leads"

I mean, for fuck's sake, her character was tied with Weaver's for being synonymous with "badass action movie chick" for anyone who isn't braindead.

354 I'll tell what's always bugged me about The Terminator. Skynet feels the walls closing in on it, and sends a robot assassin back in time to make sure John Connor is never born.

How long would it take for Skynet to realize the Terminator had failed? I'll tell you how long... it would know immediately. After all, it sent that assassin back in time and the situation didn't instantly change. So, why didn't it then send two or three Terminators back in time right away? And then four or five Terminators if that didn't work?

Well, maybe it took a tremendous amount of time and resources and preparation just to send one back in time. But that still leaves another question...

Kyle Reese followed the Terminator back to 1984, and ended up becoming the father of John Connor. John Connor thus wouldn't have existed if the Terminator hadn't been sent back in time. So... why did Skynet send the Terminator back in time? Without it having already done that, there should've been no John Connor to begin with...

355 Also! How did Kyle Reese get sent back in time to save John Connor, if there was no John Connor to begin with?
