Study: There Is No Single "Gay Gene," But a Range of Genes Explain 8-25% of Homosexuality

Really.

There is no one gene that determines a person’s sexual orientation, but genetics -- along with environment -- play a part in shaping sexuality, a massive new study shows.

Researchers analyzed DNA from hundreds of thousands of people and found that there are a handful of genes clearly connected with same-sex sexual behavior. The researchers say that, although variations in these genes cannot predict whether a person is gay, these variants may partly influence sexual behavior.

...

The researchers were able to find five genetic variants that were statistically associated with same-sex sexual behaviors, but none had a large effect and none could itself predict same-sex behaviors. One of the variants was found in a stretch of DNA that includes several genes related to the sense of smell. And another one of the genes is related to male pattern baldness, which the authors said could suggest that sex hormone regulation may somehow be involved.

and nothing else

That joke out of the way: No way, bruv, you're telling me that sex hormone regulation may be involved in homosexuality?

Sex hormones? Estrogen and testosterone? The hormones that make women women and men men? You're saying that something going on with those might somehow be involved in homosexuality?

I think gayness, and a lot of things, are epigenetic in nature. It's not true that we are what our DNA codes say we are. That's incomplete. We are what the expressed codes in our DNA say, but not everything in our DNA is actually expressed, or switched on.

Some code is present, but silent, unactivated, dormant, and will only be activated in certain situations, like a strong hormonal signal or even a disease.

So here's one I wonder about: A lot of immigrants are short, but then their grandkids are tall.

Well, so: It's just that the kids are getting better nutrition, so they get taller as they mature.

But I seem to remember it's the second generation that gets tall. The first generation over hear should get tall, as they have the American nutrition, but I thought that the height increase doesn't usually come with full force until the second generation born in the US.

I used to be friends with an Italian family, specifically a Sicilian one. The grandad was short, the dad was average height, and then all his sons and his daughter were tall. The sons were all over six foot three.

Always having to crane my neck to look into the eyes of these Gargantuan Wops, these Lumbering Gnocchi Herders, these Towering Spaghetti Yetis, really set me to thinking.

So maybe it works like this: if the mother is underfed and/or pumpting a lot stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline into an unborn baby (due to scarcity/precarious living), the epigentics of the unborn kid favor genetic expression for shortness, because short people need less food (all other things being equal).*

But when the mom (now the first generation born in America) doesn't experience such scarcity/fear, her hormonal signaling to the fetus switches on the tallness/bigness genes. In an environment where there's more food/less scarcity, the hormones in the neonatal bath trigger the "grow as big as you can" response.

I don't know if all that's right but you get what I'm getting at -- a lot of stuff, I think, is going to turn out to be determined by the neonatal hormonal bath a baby gestated in for nine months. Some genes get switched off, some get switched on.

* By the way, I think this because of seasonal dimorphism in bugs and plants -- where the bugs and plants produce a smaller, hardier version in cold weather and a bigger version in warm weather. They can often appear to be two different species.

Obviously, humans don't do this, but it seems like such a fundamental bit of coding -- grow big in conditions of warmth and plenty, grow small in conditions of cold and scarcity -- that it seems to me likely that this sort of switch must be lurking in our genetic code somewhere, even though it would work in a much diminished, much more subtle way.

And this is also connected to my theory that all people born under the sign of Aquarius are homos.

Water carriers, huh? You know what also carries water? My dick.

7 I've been saying for a while that this was likely the case, that there is no single 'gay gene' that turns homosexuality on or off.

My longstanding theory is that homosexuality is actually two separate things: the attraction to others of the same sex, and sexual impulse. They are not governed by all the same genes. Furthermore, they're probably tied into a lot of other behaviors as well, which means turning them on or off isn't easy to do without consequences.

40 I think the jump from nutrition to fear is a big one, so that specific hypothesis aside, placental size , protein and micronutrient abundance as well as maternal hormonal milieu probably all play a role.

That said this:"the epigentics of the unborn kid favor genetic expression for shortness" has me banging my head against the desk. I get what you mean, but...arrrrrgggg....
I think you mean "the maternal environment may lead to epigenetic changes in the fetus resulting in smaller body size".

I've read that the soy and phytoestrogen stuff is bullshit. I'm always talking about soyboys, as a joke, but I've looked into it, and it seems like bullshit.

Few problems:

1, these are phytoestrogens, plant estrogens, not animal estrogens or human estrogen. There's great reason to doubt that what are essentially alien hormones would do ANYTHING in our bodies.

2, for this to work, the phytoestrogens would have to pass intact without being digested/broken up into component amino acids and stuff. Why would that happen?

3, i've seen the amounts we're talking about here and they're very small.

I read a paper about estrogen given to cows to bulk them up or make them produce more milk. That's at least an animal hormone. But the teeny tiny quantities you'd get in beef are really really small, really small, well under anything you'd call a dose.

95 I think gayness, and a lot of things, are epigenetic in nature.

Well and... scientists have found out that at different times, genes will do different things. Which means that hard and fast 'this is what this gene does and means' attempts are ludicrous.

To stop that we're going to take your boys and girls away from you and make sure they are mentored by loving professional adults who are already homosexual or trans to ensure the kids get the best start in life possible!

My favorite of all of them was the Japanese school director who grew up in Japan during the war. Charming, funny, smart, etc. He was tiny. Just about my size -- 5'3" and 110 lbs. not unusual for a woman like myself, but very small for a man in the U.S.

One day a giant teenager boy came into my office and said his dad asked him to come in and say hello. He had Asian features, but I couldn't image who his dad was. It never occurred to me that this big kid was my friend the Japanese school's director's son. Later we laughed about it. The genes were there all along, but they need some nourishment to be able to reach their potential in growth. Apparently brains and temperament can survive starvation, but the body needs something tangible to grown on.

162 I've read that the soy and phytoestrogen stuff is
bullshit. I'm always talking about soyboys, as a joke, but I've looked
into it, and it seems like bullshit.

It mostly is, I think.

1, these are phytoestrogens, plant estrogens, not animal estrogens
or human estrogen. There's great reason to doubt that what are
essentially alien hormones would do ANYTHING in our bodies.

Well, some would. It just depends on the fit of the particular phytoestrogen to any of the various steroid hormone receptors. Steroid hormones all share a very similar carbon skeleton so there's no reason that just because it comes from a plant it won't have an effect. I mean, there are any number of plant derived stroid hormones that do have effects on humans (I think one ofthe frst estrogen analogues used in the pill was plant derived) so it's just a matter of whether or not any do fit.. It's an empirical question not a theoretical one.

2, for this to work, the phytoestrogens would have to pass intact
without being digested/broken up into component amino acids and stuff.
Why would that happen?

Steroid hormones are small molerules that are fat soluble, and can be absorbed directly. They aren't made of amino acids but are built around a cholesterol structure.

3, i've seen the amounts we're talking about here and they're very small.
I read a paper about estrogen given to cows to bulk them up or make
them produce more milk. That's at least an animal hormone. But the teeny
tiny quantities you'd get in beef are really really small, really
small, well under anything you'd call a dose.

Posted by: ace at August 29, 2019 03:23 PM (PbpT7)

This is true. Most soy related phytoestrogens are not particularly potent. You would have to ingest a ton of most of them to have any effect. But then again, you would really like to do a large scale randomized trial to test this.

167 I hold to my opinion that there are traits (such as less testosterone) that might "encourage" a person toward a gay life. But the gay behavior is also encourage by the culture (the Afghan leaders with boys in their tents ... is cultural, no?).

Well raised kids not exposed to pedo parents/teachers/ministers ... not told that white and straight means evil .... may (most likely?) never turn "gay". Guys in prison ... not gay, just can't find a woman? To me ... nope, they just chose "gay" ... it is a choice, and an action, even in prison. (unless being raped in prison, that's just rape)

The shortness to taller after two generations, could also be partly nurture. The habits/diets carry on in the US for a generation, perhaps. Or they move over without means (poor), eat poorly, exposed to bad environment (lead paint, dirty work, dirty part of town) ... so takes time to adapt to the new country ways?

171 "A lot of immigrants are short, but then their grandkids are tall. Well, so: It's just that the kids are getting better nutrition, so they get taller as they mature.

"But I seem to remember it's the second generation that gets tall. The first generation over hear should get tall, as they have the American nutrition, but I thought that the height increase doesn't usually come with full force until the second generation born in the US."

What you may be forgetting is that the first generation "Born in the USA" are sons and daughters of frugal, hard-bitten emigrants from places where they had little and never knew what was coming next. These folk lived small-c conservative lives of modest expenditure and indulgence, much as experienced by many whose American parents were raised in the hardest years of the Great Depression.

It is the second generation that benefits from what their parents know (and their heroic grandparents did not) about this great land --- its incredible bounty --- and indulge their offspring accordingly.

I've heard that one, too. Assumed it was supposed to be the result of all the womenfolk peeing while taking the pill.

All of my boys are significantly more masculine than their peers and the second two are so much larger that they looked like they were baby sitting throughout elementary school.

The third, 15, has a nice full beard he'll have to shave off next week before school starts but after he plays starting center on the varsity football team like he did as a freshman. I know soy isn't supposed to matter, I have no science, only anecdote but, I think it does. Also, if someone could have two Y chromosomes it would be them. 196 Looking over a study that reviewed all the extant literature till about 3 years ago, the biggest things gay people have in common was being sexually assaulted as children. This is correlation, not causation. Roughly 30% of gays self report childhood molestation. Also, anyone who doesn't feel sexual attraction towards trans people just has to "get over it", use their mind power to switch their libido, because trans women are women and trans men are men. And anyone who doesn't do this is a Bad Person, a hater who hates with hatey hate.

One would think that the above two are kinda contradictory, but progressives believe in both at the same time.

Also, don't forget, there are feedback mechanisms. For example, if men go on hormone (T) replacement therapy, they usually have to stay on for life, because their body will start producing very little testosterone when it detects the large amount of exogenous testosterone coming in.

Looking over a study that reviewed all the extant literature till about 3
years ago, the biggest things gay people have in common was being
sexually assaulted as children. This is correlation, not causation.
Roughly 30% of gays self report childhood molestation. The other main
theory with support is mistiming of hormone release during gestation, as
much of the gender differentiation happens at specific developmental
phases.

Posted by: IanDeal at August 29, 2019 03:36 PM (ArXEJ)

It's true that childhood sexual molestation increases the risk of adult homosexuality/bisexuality, but I think the 30% rate is pretty high. Probably true in some subpopulations, but in general? I'd peg it at half to a third that. I'd check it carefully....As to gender differentiation in gestation.....Hm, you might want to also check this out. early (embryonic) gender differentiation happens in an exclusively female hormonal milieu. Testosterone exposure in the fetal male only occurs after testes are formed.

There's a LOT of crappy literature and science outthere.

No, no, no, no.......This sounds reasonable but it actually isn't right.

Firstly, genotype by environment interactions can be important but difficult to detect, and they tend to be underestimated in human populations. It's a methodological problem. Secondly, maternal effects and epigenetic effects are non genetic. Thirdly, early sexual development is highly tuned to environment. In theory, sexual preference could be both completely non genetic and strictly deterministic. I personally doubt that that's universally true, but it is a possibility that should be kept in mind.

357 @281, I've seen a couple of studies (which .. take it for what it's worth) that 40% of gay men were sexually abused as children, and another 35% were physical abused. And the average age of first sexual encounter for gay men is 12, compared to 17 for straight men. That strongly implies that even for the gay men who didn't report being sexually abused, they are reporting sexual abuse as consensual encounters (and maybe even believing it).

There are way, way too many pathologies associated with homosexuality that ALSO correlate to pathologies associated with childhood sexual abuse -- hypersexuality, risk-taking behaviors, addictive behaviors, severe depression and anxiety disorders, difficulty regulating emotions, difficulty establishing stable relationships. Especially with a really low genetic correlation (that we've discovered so far), and I'm heavy on the nurture side.

People who write about birth order hold that often that big a gap is like starting a whole new sequence. My wife's family was like that - there were 3 older kids, then a 9 year gap, then 2 younger kids. The 3 older kids always felt like one family, the 2 youngers ones a separate one. (although they all get along) My wife's oldest brother was 16 years old when she was born.

A few years back, I was reading some stuff on the Japanese officer class during WWII and it was noted that the average officer was quite a bit shorter, lighter and less robust than the average enlisted soldier.

Apparently the argument was that Japanese officers were almost all sent through military schools the moment they were able, so kindergarten or 1st grade. One of the ways that the military schools cultivated toughness in their students was to basically STARVE them. Similar to the classic Spartan agoge. The problem is that the kids were being starved at the time when they needed the most nutrition for robust physical development.

So the Japanese ended up with fanatical, tough, disciplined, dedicated, and well-trained shrimps for their officer corps.

I really need to track that down again so I can give a proper cite, but it always stuck in my mind.

463 357 @281, I've seen a couple of studies (which .. take it for what it's worth) that 40% of gay men were sexually abused as children, and another 35% were physical abused.

Posted by: sunny-dee at August 29, 2019 03:55 PM (pID7O)

Given that there are many identical twin studies which prove there is no gay gene, this just reinforces it. Homosexuals, by their very nature cannot reproduce naturally, so there is no way for a "gay" gene to be passed on.
That leaves homosexuality to be a function of environment and behavior. Choices in other words. Remember up until modern times, there was was no such thing as exclusive homosexuality, especially outside the west. What we would consider forms of Bi-sexuality were more common.
Which is why the homosexual movement has always tried to claim "born this way". Because if its inherent you can't legislate against it, but if its a behavior, you could.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at August 29, 2019 04:04 PM (yHwQE)

466 I've long had a theory that expression of the gay gene relates to overcrowding as well. When humans roamed the plains, it was a genetic disaster to have one who couldn't or wouldn't reproduce. But when there are too may humans, nonreproduction seems like a perfectly normal thing for a population to do. This would explain, at least in part, why you tend to see more gays in cities -- not because they're more visible and can find each other more easily, although those things are true, but because there actually are more of them proportionately. That and theater, but mostly theater.

I don't doubt he had temptations before which he may have acted on, but I'm also sure that when he found that out, he thought to himself, "I'm not putting myself through that ever again!" 496 I'm sure there's been a lively discussion on this topic already, but I just got here, so...

What I know is that many maladaptive behaviors in humans are strongly correlated to childhood stressors, up to and including physical and sexual abuse. I've come to believe that a vast amount of what is "wrong" with people are directly traced back to that. Generally at a very early age.

So... I don't see any reason NOT to think homosexuality isn't also largely explained by childhood experiences, and whether you want to call that abuse or neglect or trauma or stress or whatever else, I'm not sure it matters all that much. Adults turn out the way they do, of course in part because of their genetics, but I'm convinced even moreso, because of what they're exposed to as kids.

537 Remember up until modern times, there was was no such thing as exclusive homosexuality, especially outside the west. What we would consider forms of Bi-sexuality were more common.
Which is why the homosexual movement has always tried to claim "born this way". Because if its inherent you can't legislate against it, but if its a behavior, you could.

No, that's not why. They claimed "born this way" because religious people "hate the sin but love the sinner".

Many gay people have a HUGE chip on their shoulder about Christianity because Christianity tells them engaging in homosexual activities is a sin.

They came up with "born this way" to say, "No, this isn't behavior, this is intrinsic to who I am, so stop calling it a sin because if there's a God, He made me this way, and any homosexual activity is my God-given gender identity."

I think its a mistake to say absolute things like this. There's a lot of odd and varied things in humans, even people who are born with parts missing or extra parts. I think some people are born a certain way, but definitely at least some are moved that way by others, or culture.

OK.Kids often know they are gay very early. They have massive crushes on same gender people as young children (like 5-6 yearsold) , that turn into erotic crushes in early adolescents, just like heterosexual kids have opposite gender crushes. It's just like that. There's never a choice with most gay guys: guys make them horny, and always have, and that's just that.

This is really really simple.

Good timing, mostly.
In J-school he created a popular media fanboy website, and NYT hired him despite little experience in their rush to establish an online presence based on Stetler's success with his own site. Then Fox hired away Howey whatever from CNN and they needed a replacement, and hired Stetler away from NYT. Right time, right place kind of meteoric rise within the industry. His performance at CNN indicates he could have used more experience before being promoted (if at all).

This happened a lot when the MSM moved from print to web -- young journalists such as Stetler and Ezra Klein got big jobs without the requisite experience.

I think asking for your father's twin's opinion on things such as this is perfectly acceptable and to be commended.

560 117 What I get most annoyed with is the showboating parades that the gays have to put on, the more provocative and decadent, the better - the banners are always about "the love!". It is not love, it is sex.

=======
I wouldn't dignify that with the term sex, it's just 'rutting'.

I use the MS Word Cyrillic keyboard, and it always takes me a couple minutes to readjust to, e.g., the "a" and "f" keys being reversed, the English "k" being the Cyrillic "l," etc.

The lessons include Russian to English and English to Russian questions, so I have to keep switching keyboard layouts back and forth. Sometimes that's easy, and other times, it's much more difficult, for some reason.

568 But you do have complete control concerning what you do about those you are attracted to

And I would further say that you have a moral requirement to control what you do about who you are attracted to. My friend's wife was this gorgeous blonde girl who was super smart and sweet as honey-dipped cinnamon rolls. She was everything I ever wanted in a girl. Somehow, despite this attraction at every level, I managed to treat her with respect and dignity, and not hit on her or try to sleep with her.

Just because you want a thin, does not mean that you must have a thing, or as REM put it: What we want, and what we need has been confused, been confused.

571 537 Remember up until modern times, there was was no such thing as exclusive homosexuality, especially outside the west.

Posted by: bonhomme at August 29, 2019 04:15 PM (9t0Zz)

My church's take on this is somewhat controversial, even within the congregation, but it shouldn't be. It's that having homosexual sex is a sin, and so is adultery, and so is divorce, and so is theft, and so on, and so on. We are all sinners, and you're not a special type of simmer, you're just a plain old sinner like everyone else. No, we're not going to marry you, which would be approving (even encouraging) you to continue to sin, but all you straight people, get off your high horses, you're just as bad in your own ways. Fortunately, we have a loving God who sent His son to die for your sins, and you are forgiven.

I think he covers that in the book too. I know I heard that before, so it was probably in the book. There are a couple of other studies he covers as well. The finch one was pretty interesting because a team went to the same isolated island in Galapagos and measured the beak geometry of 100% of the population for like 20 years. Within one generation it would evolve to be able to crack the type of seeds that grew based upon weather changes. Interesting stuff for a complete novice (me).

I did not squash him. This morning he was gone so all is well, he must have got better and flew home!

My dick.

LOL, pure poetry indeed. We do know from observation that higher density populations produce gay children at a higher rate in the West. Perhaps that has something to do with the hormones triggered by close living conditions.
