Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | American Spectator: Are We Ever Going to See Evidence That Kevin D. Williamson is a Serious Intellectual and Great Writer, Or Will We Just Have to Take His Soyboy Beta Orbiters' Word for It?Hey, I remember when nonsequitor vulgarities and idiotic Twitterspeak were considered funny! It was from 2003 to 2010. I guess conservatives do yearn for an idealized past -- including the fake ones. Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys, yo!This is a funny thing about Williamson's book: he spends pages talking about the importance of culture and the lamentable philistinism of the masses but trades heavily in swear words and toilet humor. The book opens with a quote by Leo Strauss, who said: 'The Greeks had a beautiful word for "vulgarity"; they called it apeirokalia, lack of experience in things beautiful.' The following pages contain jokes and arguments revolving around animal masturbation, animal defecation, human masturbation, vomit, sex toys, testicles and Caravaggio's 'bony cannelloni'. ... It does not help that Williamson’s insults are so often lazy. Ex-CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill is described as a 'mush-brained half-literate assclown', a 'cretin' and an 'asshole', which are the kind of devastating witticisms that your alcoholic uncle might come up with to describe his ex-wife's new husband.... The strange thing is that I have heard a lot of people claim that even if you do not like Williamson's opinions you have to respect his prose. There are nice flourishes here and there. None of them, however, could make up for his use of the phrase 'dumbasstical shitweasels', which appeared in a paragraph like a dead cockroach in an otherwise passable slice of cake. Bizarrely, Williamson adds a footnote clarifying that by 'dumbasstical shitweasel' he means an 'ordinary constituent of the demos.' If you are going to deride the intelligence of the average man, which can often be justifiably done, do not use a phrase so artless and childish. This guy is saying that the average member of the demos -- demos meaning "the people," so the average member of the public -- is a "dumasstic shitweasel"? Should they all just die, I wonder? The reviewer notes the central problem with Kevin D. Williamson: He's a would-be elitist who mocks the non-elites for not being smart like the elites. But are the elites smart? Does the dumbtasstic shitweasel Kevin D. Williamson having anything beyond average intelligence, superior self-regard, and very superior contempt for everyone else? Say what you like about 'neoreactionary' thinker Mencius Moldbug, but when he took his stand against democracy he came with his own powerful if eccentric alternative. Williamson just grouses about the demos. We can agree, of course, that you should not idealize 'the people' when it contains so many embittered iconoclasts, paranoid pattern-seekers and tedious midwits. But we also have to accept that it was not the masses who came up with harebrained schemes like the Iraq war. It is not the masses who got rich off other people’s crippling opioid addictions. It is not the masses who enabled Jeffrey Epstein. Mocking the hoi polloi has its charms, but if you are going to be an elitist then a far more difficult endeavor would be making a case for a better elite. But he can't do that. He seems like a man who is hateful about his own modest origins, and who only dreams of climbing the social ladder into upper middle class, or "elite" (in quotes), respectability. How can he criticize the group that represents his life's ambition? Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

And then instead of holding to the IF and eating later in the day, the next morning I woke up and said, "OOh, time for chicken parm." But are the elites smart? Does the dumbtasstic shitweasel Kevin D. Williamson having anything beyond average intelligence, superior self-regard, and very superior contempt for everyone else?
I think Tucker Carlson calls it the "Meritocracy Without Merit" and that is pretty spot on. I suspect Williamson is of above-average intelligence, but probably not significantly so. Williamson, however, has a far bigger problem than his pedestrian intellect. His problem is that he's an immoral monster who would happily see vast tracts of the country die off. He has *advocated* for the same. In his article that was the genesis of my visceral hatred of Williamson (it was previously mere contempt) - The Father-Fuhrer - he flat-out called the white working class "morally indefensible." If they move away and go learn to code and become good big-city dwellers who at *least* ignore their own histories (preferably they will disparage them just like Williamson does), then they become defensible but otherwise they can just go die because they're just a net cost anyway. I have no doubt that Williamson would happily shove me and anyone else who disagrees with his vision of the future into a furnace if it would reduce our moral cost and recover those "indefensible" areas of which he speaks so contemptuously. Kevin Williams is a fetid pile of garbage. I suspect he isn't nearly as smart as he thinks he is, but that is beside the point. You can be smart, stupid or anywhere in between and not be evil. Kevin Williamson is evil, and whether or not he is smart is irrelevant when considered in the context of his grotesque psyche. There's theory that we only have a certain amount of will power. Then we
have to spread that amount over a myriad of activities that need it. Exercise, diet, blogging, learning something new, practicing the ukulele, keeping up with maintenance on the fucking house..blah blah blah. Depending how much one item takes of our will power (how demanding it might be), then we only have so much left for other activities. Its a constantly moving target. Especially if you have lots of balls in the air and other unexpected demands intrude into the mix. Posted by: Cannibal Bob at August 12, 2019 05:58 PM (O5bec) 72
Pro-Tip to Williamson and company: Actual intellectuals and social aristocrats maintain their bearing at ALL times. They don't do the "I'm a devotee of the opera" one minute and gush about the Marvel universe while cursing like a Marine the next.
Pick a persona and inhabit it - which also means living within its restrictions. Because of Williamson's humble beginnings, he could never be more than a charter member of the elite. Full membership in the elite ranks generally requires that you be born into it. OTOH, there is hope for Kevin's kids, if he has any. Full membership in the elite is virtually guaranteed for life. You can be a terrorist and remain an elite - just ask Billy Ayers. He used to be a really good columnist and wrote a very interesting book about a libertarian view of the future. He took it on the chin for an article essentially about the working poor refusing to be mobile (relocation), which in fact is a pretty accurate reflection of how the working poor often view economic upheaval (and being trapped by welfare payments making leaving even more difficult) and lots of Trump supporters went at him hard for that. But what causes a guy to go completely off the rails. Goldberg strikes me the same way. They each wrote a pretty reflective book, and now ignore everything they wrote.

But the thing is, BoJo never looks like he slept under a bridge, he just looks like he's busy and absent-minded. He know how to dress well, he's just careless about it. Goldberg and company don't actually know how to dress well. They can hold whatever chair they want, claim to be part of the DC circuit, but deep down they know they're everything they look down on. Williamson is a pretentious flounder.
He may have had some kind of advanced education, but he is silly and vulgar. I am really amazed at how far "National Review" has fallen since Buckley died. Say what you will about his son Christopher (who also kind of turned out to be leftist crapweasel), but he was also a pretty witty writer. This is all emblematic of how really dumb our society is getting, how really post-literate we are becoming. We have discarded the fundamental cultural ideas that the country was based on. And substituted Twitter, TV, the internet and basically the banal mumblings of someone that Kevin Williamson, and the collection of stumble bums on the Left. HOORAY for the liberation of the internet. Let a thousand dummies bloom and write dumb stuff. We (as a society) pretty much deserve what is going to happen to us, and it won't be pretty. We have invited it, begged for it, asked for it. And now, pretty soon, we are going to get it. The rain will fall on the just and the unjust. Williamson is an intellectual fraud. Back in the day, when I commented at NRO, I notice he did join in, responding to comments of certain types. Standard liberal talking points, and minor corrections or expansions were fine by him.
But when called on major errors - which in my case were directed at his English major history and philosophy - crickets. He clearly knew no more about, e.g., Berkeley or Scholasticism than he'd picked up in an English Lit "backgrounds" lecture. And he displayed that a lot, increasingly over the years. One thing the linked article doesn't point out: both he and Mencken*are essentially aesthetes. Waugh protested in the 30s that the word "intellectual" was ceasing to mean one oriented toward the intellect, and more toward aesthetics. Once again, he was right. * A better writer than Williamson, nonetheless. Posted by: Eeyore at August 12, 2019 06:25 PM (VaN/j) 195

Please put your crack research staff on to this. Williamson can be understood according to some things he wrote years ago. One was about being adopted, and how his teenage unwed mother had not aborted him. He was grateful and amazed at the strength of his (then) teenage unwed mother. The other was about the mother who loved and raised him; and, although I don't think he intended it, it was utterly clear how much that mother embarrassed him as he grew up. "That's how they get you" was the mother's phrase that I recall from the piece. Williamson was adolescent embarrassed by his lower middle class mother's willingness to argue over every bill or charge; her conviction that the rich and powerful were ripping off the poor folks at every opportunity; it goes on. I also don't recall the excellent essay about when small town people move to big cities and adopt their attitudes, because it self-validates their aspirations. Totes Maslow. Posted by: BackwardsBoy - #PurgeProgressivism at August 12, 2019 06:36 PM (HaL55) Yep, the Premium Pillow has 5 different sizes, representing different amounts of fill. Depends on how big you are, and also if you sleep on your side or back. The correct size aligns your neck correctly. It is all on the website. Hate to say it but I do too. I've had neck and back problems all my life and I've tried every kind of pillow I can find. It works for me, better than anything else I've tried. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at August 12, 2019 06:34 PM (vEIlU) My husband has so many it takes me an extra 5 mins to make the bed. He got one of those GERD pillow thingies. It has a slanted pillow but also a large candy cane shaped one. He didn't like the slanted thing but uses the large candy cane one. He also has a regular pillow he uses on the top portion of the candy cane and another pillow that he slips between the bed and his built-in nightstand. It's ridiculous. It's fairly common for (self-anointed) "elites" to make a big deal about their superiority over the "deplorables".
