They’ll turn into your driveway, not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door, as innocent as children, longing for the past. “Of course, we won’t mind if you look around,” you’ll say, “It’s only twenty dollars per person.” And they’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it, for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk off to the bleachers and sit in their short sleeves on a perfect afternoon. And find they have reserved seats somewhere along the baselines where they sat when they were children. And cheer their heroes. And they’ll watch the game, and it’ll be as they’d dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. Anyway, the highlight was our speaker explaining that the university makes a point of *not* treating people equally, because to do so would be to ignore the historical inequities that have created today's current social imbalances blah blah blah. Leif maybe stood there. Mad props for getting to L'Anse aux Meadows. It was definitive proof that the Icelandic sagas' claims of New World voyages were real. There was question until the early '60s when a Danish archaeologist, Helge Ingstatt, and his wife found this site. The thing is that there are two sagas which recount voyages to Vinland and neither exactly describes the kind of settlement at L'Anse aux Meadow, which may have been used for one to three winters. That is, it may be supplemental to the Sagas and not necessarily a Leif Eriksson site. Posted by: Bandersnatch at August 09, 2019 10:15 PM (fuK7c) 45

We also are three days away from the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, but given the waxing moon, its brightness will interfere with viewing around that time. Here is an article on where to find the radiant - between the constellation Cassiopeia and the star Capella -- https://www.space.com/32868-perseid-meteor-shower-guide.html You can compute when Capella rises at your location using this link -- https://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/mrst.php Your best time for viewing this evening is between 2:00 and 4:00 EDT, I would guess. Take a chair or blanket, find a location with a clear view to the north of east and keep your eyes peeled for streaking lights in the sky coming from the vicinity of the radiant. Caution, contains moving tributes to dead pets.
Those are serious tributes rather than New Age flaky. But as "flaky" is right up WD's alley, here is a New Age guru's insights about 10 signs that your pet is visiting you from the afterlife. Some signs are dog-specific and others are cat-specific. "A typical cat visitation is where [sic] you will feel your cat curl up along the backs of your knees while laying [sic] down, at the foot of your beds [sic], or along your back, also when you're laying [sic] down in bed. A cat in spirit or their presence can even make a physical impression in the sheets of the bed, so be sure to look for that." https://tinyurl.com/y699vqrd As they say, you can't make this stuff up. OTOH, I doubt that MisHum will borrow this for the Caturday Pet Thread, so there's that. Posted by: Basement Cat at August 09, 2019 10:49 PM (pPNCa) 166

Taylor Swift is approaching 30 and is going through the same downward spiral as every other hot young pop star when they are too old to be singing bubble gum songs and not deep enough to keep it going. Posted by: Radical Centrist at August 09, 2019 10:21 PM (44Cld) A decade or more ago, I was impressed with this young new talent by the name of Taylor Swift. She turned out a lot of good music, very relate-able. Now, just another leftist tool. And her newest songs sound like shit, too. Not angry at all, just kinda sad at another talent being wasted by Leftism. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at August 09, 2019 11:00 PM (sy5kK) 197

Illinois' politicians are freaking out over Trump's proposal to pardon former governor Rod Blagojevich. They're afraid that Blago has been talking to the Feds, and that what is knows is really damaging, even after seven years in prison.
In particular, rumor has it that when Blago was trying to auction off Obama's vacant Senate seat after Obama was elected president, Obama was overheard on an FBI wiretap trying to convince Blago to appoint Valerie Jarrett to the seat. If true, it would be interesting to know what inducements Obama was offering. Robert Mueller's FBI had zero interest in investigating Obama, of course, and allegedly terminated the investigation immediately once Obama showed up on a FBI wiretap. Posted by: Wiliam Shatner Conjugation. This is the stuff of nightmares for kids. I had several hours of tutoring after school three times every week. It was my mother's idea to compensate for my school's deficiencies. The only subject I dreaded and to this day have confined to the deepest and darkest purposely forgotten recesses of my brain was conjugating verbs in Spanish. I did my best. I learned and practiced being a good kid wanting to please parents. But no matter how many tenses I learned, there were always more. A never ending line of Castilian verbs waiting to make life miserable. So I gave up and blocked it off. No more pluscuanperfecto for me. I have gotten to the point where I will grab a beer and walk back to my office to continue working, because the conversations are so fucking inane - "I lurve my plug-in electric car, you guys..."
The older I get, the more het up I get about the erosion of what has made America great. I'm just glad that the woman who shares an office with me gets me. She's close to my age, married to an Army guy, used to fly small planes in Alaska. She's nearly impossible to offend. She actually was offended once, when Bob walked in to bitch about something and dropped an F-bomb, then hastily apologized. Office mate said,"quit fucking apologizing." Bob said, "sorry." Miley's neighbor across the street here is something. He's the one with the insanely manicured lawn. Manicured isn't even the word -- it just doesn't do it justice. Apparently he was using some landscaping outfit to cut that grass, but he bought a mower to do it himself, looks like. Now, this is about a $5K mower, I figure. It's one of those zero turn radius jobs with the deck on front, and the bobcat-like handle controls. It has a fancy bagger on it, too. Now, his yard is not that big. It's a little bigger than a postage stamp. Maybe a postage stamp and a half. One could easily do it with a push mower in no time at all. And he bagged his clippings. It was ridiculous. He filled the catcher up about half way through -- 3/4 of a postage stamp. He then had to get off and load the clippings into plastic bags. I can't stand to bag clippings. Wastes all the nutrients. Put it back on the ground from which it came. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at August 09, 2019 11:40 PM (f1Vqw) 310

great post wd. as usual.
allow me to vent before i scan the comments wtf is going on with coke. I saw the link about their Hungary gay adds. Here in Japan they are pushing hard on their coke-zero. wtf. Diet has a limited audience in Japan, mostly young women, so they push this coke zero crap and the regular coke never goes on sale. They also push the 500ml plastic bottles and not the 1.5 l or cans (200ml, so smaller than us but everything is smaller here.) why would they push the coke-zero? is the chemical crap cheaper even than HFCS? Do they think people will drink anything (well, they did drink tab, so i guess they will.) They also stopped having sales on their sports drink, trying to move it up to the premium slot owned by Pocari Sweat. The coke stuff is lousy and now I buy the off brand at the home center which is actually very good. So coke seems to be on a steady path of higher prices, crappy product and getting worse. I really think they have given up on quality and figure the whole business is about forcing retailers to stoke and push your crap and people getting used to the taste of whatever shit they put in the bottle and paint red. One of my best buddies works in a government contracting job. Years ago some SJW type raised a stink and got preferred personal pronouns to be mandated at his job. So everyone had to give their pronouns, and he, with a straight and clam face, identified as The Earthen. Ever since then he has insisted that that's how he be identified. Not angry, but he always corrects. The SJW guy greets him through grinding teeth, but my buddy has never, not once, broken character. Posted by: Charles Martell at August 09, 2019 11:54 PM (mI2lW) Instead of a compost heap, you can try trench composting. I did that on some ground that was killed by having a shed on it for years. Just dig a trench, or even just dig a single shovel blade hole, dump your vegetable scraps in it, and bury it. If you want to be fancy, dig a trench instead, and each batch of veggie scraps get buried in turn. It works the soil, it loosens it up, and digs the scraps in to enrich the soil. What the heck is ace poly? Polyamorphus? Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 09, 2019 11:20 PM "Asexual polyamorous"? Posted by: Zettai Roshia-no Botto at August 09, 2019 11:21 PM (wgV7k) Ewoks, in the juvenile stage are trisexual and will be known to mate with common objects such as sofas and toasters. When the Ewok matures and puts on the beer-gut and has the under-pelt of gray come to the surface the Ewok forms a close, intense, yet violent attraction to the platypus; a reaction that involves lust, shame, growth, and large cash bribes. At this point, when the platypus has been removed, the Ewok will retreat into a Brooklyn apartment to weep, groom his pelt, indulge in the consumption of Bugles and Fritos while binge watching "Murder She Wrote." After several weeks and applications of "Dynasty" and "Dallas" the Ewok may be recovered and capable to enter society once more with a sense of hope based on wealth and delicate female undergarments as seen on ABC on Friday night. I'm watching Perry Mason now, and had to laugh out loud. He just did some slick lawyerin'. His client, a pretty blonde ingenue (he got a of those) was being charged. I wasn't paying attention until then, don't know if the murder had happened yet, but she was charged with stealing $50K worth of jewelry from a jewelry box. Some prominent dude's wife or something. The prosecutor -- not Burger, but some young punk -- wanted to deny bail. Perry said I'll compromise -- we'll set bail at the amount that was stolen. Young punk agrees, $50K would suit him fine. Mason smiles. He then calls the guy on the stand and pulls out a copy of the insurance papers on that jewelry. Didn't you just pull that $50K out of how much you insured it for? Is the box completely empty now? Well, no. So less than $50K was thus missing. How much less, Mr. So-and-so? Before it was over, the guy couldn't swear that $5 was missing, much less $50K. The judge releases her own her own recognizance, per the agreement Mason just made with the prosecutor. Best matrix of cost / effectiveness in a mower I've yet seen, is a fat tired, self-propelled 44" mower, with the fat tires as the drive wheels, the front wheels were free-turning caster mounts.
What made it special? The operator stood on a wheeled "Surrey" platform immediately behind the mower. Steered the mower by wide, great leverage handlebars. Motorcycle type throttle. WAY faster than any "zero turn" sit-on platform. And a turn radius so tight as to collar a tree in one pass, even if not a true "zero turn". Looked like it took a bit of skill and physicality to run it well though. If it doesn't have a Dead-Man switch n' cable, it damn well ought to! How much timing chain stretch is acceptable on an older V8? I've tried everything else, I think it's a little doggy, maybe due to timing chain. I had a great overlook of the UTSA campus, and a bit to the left, a view of Fiesta Texas, from the backyard deck. Said backyard featured 29 mature trees on an oddly shaped, trapezoidal residential lot... still, the typical 1/4 acre. That's a lot of tress there. My lawn contractor drove one of those Surrey rigs. Don't know his blade speed, but it must've been-a-spinnin'. Fast as he could go, and he was FAST, he left a golf-fairway manicured lawn in his wake. He did once tell me that he never trusted a shop to sharpen his blades... he did that himself, as often as needed, even in mid-job if the mowed results so required. His turnover in crew was about a bazillion percent though. No one could keep up with his pace. Not with a weed eater, not with a leaf blower. He got his immigration the LEGAL way, and Citizenship, too. He HATED liberal democrats. Said they were the same as PRI in Mexico, only worse. On a 90 degree V-8 engine, it's a killer, and you won't ever get the engine to run smoothly at all. On a 45 degree V-8? Well that's what I thought, and from what I'm reading it should perk it up a bit. It's had new rings and bearings, new distributor, timing curve is good, but it's a little doggy down low, no grunt.
Compression is about 150 across the board, 8 to 1 compression. One thing I noticed, I'm a big proponent of using a mechanics vacuum gauge for diagnostics and tuning. But I've never been able to get this thing into the 18" to 20" manifold vacuum at idle unless I advance the timing quite a lot past stock. It's not unusual to advance timing past stock, but I kind of thought the engine should reach those numbers at a stock factory initial timing. If my theory is correct I should see another 5 or 10 psi maybe on a compression test, and manifold vacuum run much better at factory timing settings, and it should run and idle better. It's real good now, just ... weak. Posted by: Common Tater at August 10, 2019 12:50 AM (Jyo5m) 403
I did some searching. Three to five degrees slack is normal for a new chain; over ten, time to replace it. At nine degrees? may as well replace it.
Some Fords had a nylon wear surface molded to the camshaft gear (302's in the '70's). If that wore off, flakes got in the oil pump, and twisted off the distributor drive shaft. Roller chains seem to hold up better than the 'silent" chains. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 10, 2019 12:51 AM (abNpZ) 404

Posted by: Common Tater at August 10, 2019 12:50 AM (Jyo5m) Well, you cam timing is going to be about 9 degrees late, isn't it? You can adjust distributor timing, but the cam timing is what it is. Changing timing chains is not very hard to do. If you have not changed the water pump in recent memory, may as well do that, too, since it will be coming out anyway. Also, check your valve lift. Early '70's Chevy 350's had a problem with soft cams, and lobes on the rear cylinders would wear down to nubbins. Engine would slowly lose power, but ran smooth. When lift gets to near-zero, though, loud carb backfires occur all the time. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 10, 2019 12:57 AM (abNpZ) 408
The thing with camshaft phasing, ya really have to use a degree wheel and see what's what. The keyway error on crankshaft and camshaft gear during manufacture, and consistency in the camshaft itself, the errors might cancel out, or they can stack up. Then they sell offset woodruff keys to advance or retard the camshaft phasing. The really slick setups have crankshaft timing chain gears with offset keyways in different degrees.
I am replacing the timing set tomorrow, but I don't foresee a degree wheel in my future. It should help quite a bit though just getting everything setup according to Hoyle. Posted by: Common Tater at August 10, 2019 12:57 AM (Jyo5m) 409

Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 10, 2019 12:56 AM (QzJWU) Timing chain tensioners, on those engines so fitted, usually have a shoe faced with hard rubber, or nylon, or Delrin. Less often, a roller. Very common on Japanese 4 cylinders, back in the day. Now, they nearly all use cog belts, outside of the oiling system. Get a Studebaker V8. Or six. They use timing gears, no chain, and slack is well under one degree. The gears do wear, and torsional vibration in the cam and distributor can occur, but the slack is still virtually undetectable. Usually the piston rings wore out before the timing gears became a problem. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 10, 2019 01:03 AM (abNpZ) 414

Thing is I don't have a degree wheel nor a dial indicator and fixtures. I've read how to do it, it's not too bad, but I don't want to make a career out of it. Yes it is common to advance ignition timing to compensate for stretch. All chains stretch or wear, it just gets worse over time. Some will add in a few degrees of camshaft phasing to compensate for that. I paid to have the engine rebuilt a long time ago, and all the shit he was supposed to do ... he didn't. If you were building a race engine, and wanted to wring every last driblet of power out of it, you would already be degree-wheeling the living snot out of it, wouldn't you?
------------- Yes, but even a stock engine, a daily driver, can benefit from degreeing the cam. Because there's no way to know how far off ot might be due to production tolerances. The crank keyway could/would be off slightly. The crank gear keyway can be off slightly. Same with the camshaft keyway and gear keyway. All those production tolerance errors can add up or stack up. That's why people degree a cam. Then the camshaft itself can be messed up. Or inconsistent across lobes etc. My problem, when I tear into something, I fall prey to the "Well as long as I'm in here, I might as well do ______"; start measuring everything, of course it's way out of spec. So a simple valve seal replacement ends up rebuilding the entire engine.. I'm trying to stay focused here ... I suspect it will be another one of those "shoulda done a long time ago" deals. "I envy other people's ability to fix things " Don't, because we end up having to fix things all the time. Things will not stay fixed! If they try to stay fixed, sooner or later someone will show up and unfix them. It's a fixation of mine.

I've read Studebaker was VERY competitive in racing for a time.
Didja hear about the auction in Minnesota? Some old Farmer passed, age 88, last name Graham, he amassed over 400 cars, I think it's this weekend. Lots of vintage Studes and Fords and generally cool shit. No, nothing like that on the balancer. It has solid lifters, I have it tuned up pretty well I suppose, hopefully this tightens it up. Has the same firing order as a flathead, for some reason this makes for a unique exhaust note. Sounds good with dual exhaust especially. The "InOp1" mark on the balancer is in addition to TDC I'm sure, it's there to help in degreeing the cam? Or?
A rough idea of camshaft phasing on most V8 can be deduced by observing that when #1 is at TDC compression #6 valves will be at overlap and vice versa. This doesn't work on Buick Nailheads. Posted by: Common Tater at August 10, 2019 01:36 AM (Jyo5m) 449

Perhaps all public building should have 3 restrooms, man, woman, and crazy
or 1 RR with a 1 holer and locking door. That is what my Dr's office has. Posted by: Vic at August 10, 2019 07:05 AM (mpXpK) 553

I'm confused. A transgendered male is a girl that
switches/changes/identifies to/as a guy right? So the school was making the trans male use the girls or private restroom. That's what the judge found discriminatory. -- I have this sneaking suspicion that's the entire point. There is no law, not really, and any law can be used against you. Many of the businesses that we do business with locally have some kind of customer rewards program, usually associated with our phone number.
And in most cases, the cashier's screen will reveal the name of the account holder. Which oddly enough, usually shows mrs VIA's name, when I give our number to the clerk. And when it does, I usually say that I am self identifying as Mrs VIA today. And almost without fail, I get a response from the clerk showing some type of rejection of the popular idea that a person can just identify with any gender that they wish. And then we both get a chuckle out of how stupid the world has become. Black, white, young, old...it doesn't matter. Ain't nobody buying the progressive bullshit on this stuff. 543 Yeah, they can be and they burn easily, too. Links
are good with quickie food like pancakes or French toast. Patties are made for biscuits, though. Perfect combination of round with round (and a slice of cheese and a schemer of mustard -- the Breakfast of Champions). Posted by: RickZ at August 10, 2019 06:55 AM (Y8PSl) I have been using Pillsbury frozen biscuits for a while now so no big mess to clean up. They are pretty good too. We've gotten frozen sausage patties big enough for sammiches from Costco that are pretty darn good.

Posted by: Moron Robbie -Eight Has No Home Here at August 10, 2019 07:13 AM (A8W5E) Yeah those are the ones that come in a blue bag and you can cook as many as you want. The whop on the counter ones you have to fix 5 and with sausage that's a little much for one person. Posted by: Vic at August 10, 2019 07:16 AM (mpXpK) 562
I got some links at the store a few weeks ago because they did not have patties. Those are harder to fry than the patties.
I do links up in a pan with a lid on them. Let them cook on medium for about 4 minutes, turn, put the lid back on and cook for another 4. Remove from heat while I'm cooking the eggs. They brown up nice, and alllll the popping grease stays (mostly) contained in the lid/pan Posted by: Bruce at August 10, 2019 07:16 AM (vd8XM) 563

The Left has no place in its universe for guys that invent expanding tables. Or invent anything (other than another way to fool you into forfeiting your rights and your capacity for independent thought). Inventors, DIYers, problem-solvers, heretodox critical thinkers -- all scary and embarrassing propositions for the Left. Anything that removes you from, or increases your likelihood of escaping, their confined and controlled sphere of supplicating servitude and dependence -- very, very disturbing.

"Can they charge the utes with a hate crime?"
That has been requested by the local religious communities. I guess the Defense would point to their previous records of crimes to show that they are an equal opportunity group of little thugs. Willing to attack , regardless of race, ethnicity, religion...etc. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at August 10, 2019 07:25 AM (cqNba) 574
