Trump Withdraws John Ratcliffe as Nominee for Director of National Intelligence

Ah darn. I thought he'd be good.

Previously it had been reported, and I think accurately, that Trump had either chosen or was leaning towards Fred Fleitz, of the Center for Security Policy.

But Trump seems to have decided against him. The Daily Beast, for example, reports that Trump has requested a list of all of the top intelligence managers, which is assumedly being collected for purposes of picking a new DNI. That suggests he's eliminated Fleitz from consideration, or else he'd just go back to his original first pick.

A friend who's an expert in this are is upset at this news of asking for a list of the top intelligence officials, because almost all of the people on that list are Deep State Obama operators. "Might as well just pick John Brennan and be done with it," he says.

Ugh:

It won't be Sue Gordon, says the NYT.

The backtrack leaves Mr. Trump without any obvious candidate to fill one of the country’s most important national-security jobs, heightening scrutiny on what will happen with Sue Gordon, Mr. Coats’s No. 2. Mr. Trump has already decided not to allow her to rise to the role of acting director of national intelligence when Mr. Coats steps down, according to people familiar with his plans.

The decision to circumvent Ms. Gordon, who has served as the principal deputy director in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, will probably upset Republicans and Democrats in the Senate who had expressed doubts about Mr. Ratcliffe.

Mr. Trump recently blocked Ms. Gordon from personally delivering an intelligence briefing after she arrived at the White House, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Ratcliffe was hung out to dry, complain some Republican Congressmen:

No, I don't think so - nothing more needed than 4 GOP Senators saying they don't like Ratcliffe because he's too conservative for them, and he's talked about the Deep State in public too much. Even I didn't think that Republican Senators would so eagerly shit on a Republican Congressman just because their deep state friends told them to, but here we are.

There are only like 30 guys with experience doing this, and that includes connections to donors and stuff, and Perry got in the race very late, when most of the better people were already working for candidates.

(Assuming this is about his earlier 2012 bid. If it's about the 2016 one, I'd have to think of a different excuse. Though, there as well -- a lot of candidates. Perry might not have had his pick of the litter, being a damaged candidate.)

I am thrilled to have an American president who will take action to Americans jailed under sketchy circumstances in other countries. That was one of the many despicable things Obama did: ignored these such cases, whether it was a Marine who took a wrong turn and accidently entered Mexico, Otto Wambier, or these Americans held by ISIS. He did not lift a finger to assist them.

People wonder why senators like McCain, Lamar Alexander, and Lindsay Graham kept getting elected, and it's because of this smallball stuff.

The fact that Trump is doing it, and very publicly doing it, shows that he understands the micro-levels of politics as well as senators who've been in the game for decades.

That is indeed the problem. Any "solution" that doesn't severely reduce the size and scope of the FBI and DOJ is no solution at all.

This will make the FBI and DOJ bolder. Why not ? It's pretty out there now what they tried to do this time - and they're going to get away with it. Why shouldn't they push harder next time.

Trump's got the same problem Sessions had. He simply won't, not can't - won't, see that the structure is rotten to the core. And because of this - Trump will be the last "outsider" to ever be President again.

I think it was supposed to be "keel hauled". Which usually resulted in the death of the hauled. Barnacles and other assorted very sharp bivalve sea life attached itself to the hulls of sailing ship which would render the hauled sliced and diced.

If that didn't happen the sharks would get them. There are extremely few recorded survivors of that punishment.

If you have to ask why a long term senator isn't regularly challenged by members of their own party, you probably don't understand American politics terribly well.

And Diogenes, OK, I will follow up with a snail mail and enclose a copy of the receipt so they can get the exact time ... I only got one name, but their clock-in times should get the asst. manager's name as well as the cashier's.

The helpful service I got definitely deserves acknowledgement.

Posted by: Lurking Lurker - Not In My Purview at August 02, 2019 03:55 PM (FiUMj)

Most likely reason mentioned up-thread, enough Senate Republicans balked - and Cocaine Mitch gave the numbers to Trump. Votes weren't there.

2020 is going to be something. A very popular siting President with over half the country, getting knee-capped at every turn by a sizeable contingent of his own party. The GOP even got in line behind Reagan at the time. Sure - they all shit on him about 5 minutes after he was moved out of the White House, but they supported him while he was there.

Not Trump, though. I guess once they rebuffed the Tea Party surge, they adopted a new campaign slogan ...

It's our party and we'll tank if we want to.
