Is This Something?

I have a nequel... a nequel for sequel.

Verdict: Meh. The plane stuff was pretty good but I just saw similar aerial stuff in M:I Fallout.

I didn't understand -- were there flashbacks in this? Was I supposed to be seeing Goose or is that just an actor that looks a lot like him?

And volleyball? We gotta do the volleyball scene too?

Eh, Tom Cruise is mostly doing good work lately so whatever, I'll probably see it.

7 Cruise might be a lunatic, but it's been a long time since he made a film that wasn't fun. American Made was a two hour dunk on the FBI, the MIs are all passably watchable, and with the Navy providing the capability for the flight sequences of everything but the Iranian Tomcat, it'll be worth it just to watch some of the finest hardware the US makes do its thing at high speed.

98 The Iranians have a "handful" of F-14A models and have to manufacture their own spare parts. To say they have an "air wing" of them is laughable. There are about half a dozen that can actually fly combat missions. They've reversed engineered the AIM-64 "Phoenix" anti-air missile and given it a cool Islamic name, but it's inferior to the original. Otherwise it's a big, fast sled like the original without talent at the controls.

I'd not dismiss a competent Iranian Air Force pilot with a competent weapons officer in the back, but I'd wager there are maybe 6 Iranian pilots and WEPS that could give any US pilot a hard time, and they were trained in the US and are now as old as Maverick.

Groom Lake still flies F-14's BTW. (aka Area 51)

It, like the original Star Wars, is very fun to watch with the exact opposite understanding of what the creators were trying for. And it's easily achieved with both.

European actresses particularly. They come to Hollywood, hit big for one film, and wind up back in Europe for the rest of their careers.

Isabelle Adjani

151 Star Wars: Orphan is groomed by religious zealots to assassinate the elected leader of the government.

We're not sure in that movie that the Emperor was elected in the normal sense; we're just aware of a residual Senate that's about to be abolished. We show up when there's an uneasy balance between the military and the Sith Lords. The military thinks they're in charge and even the last Senatorial remnants (Leia) suspect as much.

As far as we know, the Emperor is a figurehead just like the Senate by that stage.

It's over "The Empire Strikes Back" and the sequels that we learn that Palpatine was Space Hitler all along.

The 80's are dead to me musically..
But.. I gotta say.. Kenny Loggins songs were pretty good to me when I was busting my nut playing crappy pubs in the 70's and early 80's.. everyone liked his songs! And they are easy to play and easy to give it some of the good ole Kenny inflections. I actually looked a lot like him back then.. He made a lot more money though.. then pissed it away in several divorces..

Back in WWII, there were Russian women who flew obsolete biplanes to harass German ground troops. They flew at night and cut their engines to glide silently over their targets before dropping their bombs.

Their planes' cruising speed was slower than the German fighters' stall speeds, so they were very difficult to shoot down.

The Germans called them the "Night Witches".

That was an F-14 Tomcat in the very last scene.

"Phoenix" is Goose's daughter (Meg Ryan was pregnant when Goose died, obviously). And of course, Phoenix gets killed fighting against the Evil White Supremacists (Russians allied with Trump to take over the Ukraine, or something. Work with me here).

After being grounded for punching Rick Rossovich's lights out at the Squadron Football Game/Homo-Erotic Picnic, Mav travels to the Boneyard at Davis Monthan AFB in AZ and refurbishes his old Tomcat into flying condition (insert montage scene here).

Maverick then flies solo in his old 'cat into Russia to finally put a Hellfire Phoenix Missile (not named for the dead daughter of Meg and Goose - It's the AIM-54 System the F-14 carried) right up Ol' Putin's ass.

Tom Cruise finally dies in a flurry of Russian AA missiles, content, smirking to the end.

Roll credits.

Yes and I held that view for a long time. Still hold that view for any role that a forward combat troop would do. The physical risks leading to debilitating injury and shortened periods of being mission capable are just to high.

But the physical demands of flying are actually well suited to personnel with slighter upper-body builds and tempered aggressiveness. Anger and ego in an aircraft gets you dead.
Women have proved themselves as pilots.

Besides, you just can't know how much it lifts the spirits of all of us in the blood and mud to hear a sweet southern lilt asking, "How ya'll boys doin. Would you like me to make all your troubles go away?"

457 @411 Back in WWII, there were Russian women who flew obsolete biplanes to harass German ground troops.

-----------------

The Soviets also had a couple of female combat aces. The more successful of the two was Lidya Litvyak who is credited with somewhere between five and a dozen kills (her exact tally varies depending on the source).

During the Battle of Kursk, she turned to meet two on-coming German Bf-109 fighters, flew into a cloud, and was never seen again. The official story is that she successfully crash-landed her plane outside a nearby village, but died of wounds she'd suffered. A body in the village is claimed to be that of an unknown female pilot that the villagers buried, and this is generally believed to be her. An official investigation agreed with this conclusion. Others, though, point to rumors that suggest she might have been captured by German troops operating in the area, and taken as a prisoner of war. If so, her subsequent fate is unknown.

472 387 I'm being serious, though. I know technology helps, but men still have faster reaction times than women.

I'm just wondering if the protocol is to send up women knowing
because equality, h8rs, when they know that choice involves a higher
potential to lose the pilot, plane, and fight.-----------------------
Revealing a little more, I was also at the USAFA, class of 82, before I decided to ditch the politics of the officer corps.
Point being, I was a classmate of a lot of the pilots that I controlled and was well ingratiated to their trials and tribulations.

I also road raced motorcycles for a few decades and a surprising number of my competitors were ex military pilots.

Which brings me to the point.
road racing a motorcycle is a lot like flying a fighter. Quick reactions are NOT the key. Quick decisions are. Things happen too fast for anyone to meaningfully react to. You have to mentally be way ahead of your vehicle. That is the core principle of OODA. Hyper fast reactions with bad forsight makes for jittery control and that is in stable.

So your proper angle of criticism for women fighter pilots is, can women be taught to be aggressive enough? Can they learn to be the snarling attack dog pulling at the chain always looking for the sequence to a kill.
Well, yes they can, as many a male fighter pilot has learned.
It isn't 100% of them, but neither is it 100% for men either.

487 @437 Long time between movies. How long does the average fighter pilot fly before he's sidelined to a desk job ?

---------------

It's not so much that. The US military employs an "up or out" policy (implemented by McNamara, iirc). You either get promoted, or you're forced out. The trailer puts him at the rank of Captain, or O-6. That's the same rank as a Colonel in the other services, and is the last rank before Admiral, where he'd pretty much be forced out of the cockpit. He's not going to be in the cockpit for much longer because they'll force him to either become an Admiral (in which case his assignment will pull him off the flight roster), or be forced to retire.

I would imagine that he's the Commander Air Group (i.e. the guy in charge of all of the pilots and planes) for whichever posting he's currently at.

Something else worth noting -

One of the problems afflicting combat pilots these days is information overload from their HUD display in the cockpit.

One item that I've heard that supposedly differentiates the sexes is that men in general tend to do really well focusing on one thing, while women tend to do better with splitting their attention between multiple things. Depending on how well that stereotype holds up, women might do better with the information overload problem.

I'm personally not aware of anything on this topic either way. However, also note that women were allowed to become combat pilots back in the '90s, when things weren't quite so insane. If there had been problems back then, I'd imagine that word would have gotten out at that time.

The "women in every other front-line combat role" thing is a much more recent phenomenon, and has largely only been able to come about because of the current insanity.

Puh-leeease.

The fact is that democratic processes are some of the stupidest ways to fill positions and that most people treat any vote frivolously and as a sideshow. Voting is such a brittle exercise that it's amazing people have been sold on how important it is. It's a joke.

Just the fact that releasing numbers before the polls close has such a massive effect on voting that we have banned it in 50 states tells you how easy and silly it is to affect votes.

Google doesn't have any magic vote turning machine. They just have some normal, run-of-the-mill propaganda. The same that the left has always had.

The same can be said of a number of minorities that are not well represented in motorsports as well. It doesn't mean they don't have the ability nearly so much as it means they haven't taken a sustained interest. To excel at motor sports you need to be committed for a long time and you need lots of other people who believe you, even after you've turned thousands or hundreds of thousands of finely crafted machinery into very poor lawn art.

So which is it. Are you saying that Pro Drag racing doesn't involve good reactions, timing, and motor skills under high G forces and with significant risks and thus proves that women do have the abilities for other similar roles, just as how minority men performing in other sports proves that it isn't ability that keeps them from rising to the top of motorsports.
Or are you intimating that your argument excusing minority men from being in the top of motorsports is somehow different from women who are actually at the top of a motorsport?

I'm saying that being able to excel in one particular sport out of so many isn't the greatest argument for the quality one can expect from women (fighter) pilots. It certainly says that the numbers of women becoming pilots is wildly out of proportion to the very, very few that one would expect could actually compete with the men on an even basis, without ever expecting to get more than one or two elite women pilots over a decade or two.
