House Votes to Kill Fakey-Fake Impeachment Inquiry

Should be a lot of anger among the emotionally incontinent.

The resolution went down on a vote of 332 to 95, with all Republicans voting for it and more Democrats in favor of killing the impeachment resolution than were for backing it. There was a single abstention.

After hours of uncertainty about the mechanics of how the measure would be dealt with, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, a Trump loyalist, moved to table the resolution – not long after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would 'deal' with it, without specifying precisely how.

This doesn't mean that the Democrats got out of this with no penalty -- now they have a lot of "moderate" Democrats who have voted to keep Literal Hitler, Worse Than the First Hitler, in Das Weiss Haus, and that's going to Not Be Okay with the progressives, super-partisans, NeverTrumpers and assorted other lunatics who sit on Twitter all day and then cry in the shower like Glenn Close in the Big Chill.

Also, Trump can now say, correctly, that even his enemies in the Democrat-controlled Congress have decided that there's no case for impeachment.

From Tami:

@ChadPergram

Hse votes to set aside articles of impeachment for President Trump prepared by Rep Al Green (D-TX).

The vote was 332-95

137 Democrats voted yea

95 Democrats voted no

All Republicans voted nay

Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI) voted yes.

Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) voted present

This is a delight:

Also via Tami: Jake Tapper's twitter thread with what he hears from his many, many, MANY close Democrat friends, some of whom don't even work for Fusion GPS!

House Democrats appeared unified in their votes this week but I've spent the day talking to a bunch of them and many are extremely frustrated. All agree POTUS's tweets needed to be condemned; they spoke under condition of anonymity so they could be candid. (Thread)

2
2/ "The president won this one," said House Dem 1 of the Trump v Squad (AOC, Tlaib, Omar & Pressley) showdown. "What the president has done is politically brilliant. Pelosi was trying to marginalize these folks and the president has now identified the entire party with them."

3/ Another issue: what are Dems focused on? Is it what will help the class of 2018 (largely more moderate than the Squad) get reelected?

Dem Rep 2: "The president's words and actions speak for themselves. We need to focus on the issues that got them here: jobs, health care..."

4/ "...instead of the issues the president brings up deliberately. Anything that takes away from bread and butter issues is playing into his hands."

5/ Other House Democrats are conflicted about having to defend the Squad given things they've said and done. House Dems cited: talk of supporting challengers to incumbent Dems in primaries, AOC's use of the term "concentration camps," anti-Semitic comments by Tlaib & Omar.

6/ This perceived selective outrage rankled some Dems.

"Everybody was completely outraged by what the president said," said House Dem 3, "and everybody thought it was appropriate to criticize him...

7/ "...but this was the *first* time the House has taken action to criticize him in any way, We couldn't even bring ourselves to have a resolution exclusively condemning anti-Semitism uttered by one of those members" -- Omar -- "but we leapt to their defense here."

1
8/ A few House Dems noted that Omar and Tlaib just introduced a resolution affirming the right of Americans to boycott, perceived as an expression of support for the anti-Israel BDS (boycott, divest, and sanction) movement that most House Dems oppose.

9/ "So we'll hear a tirade of attacks on Israel from the same group," said House Dem 3. "Hopefully they won't be anti Semitic."

House Dem 4 also brought up that bill coming "from someone with a history of anti-Semitism" -- Omar -- "So yeah it’s challenging."

10/ House Dem 4 recalls that "less than 2 weeks ago when members of our caucus were trying to support funds for children at the border," the Squad was arguing that "we're pro-putting kids in cages, we're against human rights. So there’s frustration."

11/ Others noted that this week the House Democratic Caucus stood by a group that is not perceived as standing by them.

"I can't tell you the number of Members who are angry and annoyed about them criticizing us," said House Dem 3.

12/ AOC, in particular "gives her chief of staff license to get candidates to run against her colleagues and to go after them on social media. It makes people's skin crawl," said House Dem 3.

House Dem 4 summed it up: "We were there for them; they should stop attacking us."

Wow. There's more drama here than David French and Jonah Goldberg arguing about what Starbucks to hang out while their wives are "otherwise occupied."

We had a beautifully mannered lemon-beagle-ish dog and he loved ham so we called him Jambon. We had just lost one of ours at home, and had we had the kind of 'net access we do now and figured out in time that Tahiti is regarded as disease-safe and doesn't require quarantine or anything to bring a dog in to the US we'd have just grabbed him and brought him home, but we didn't have the data and so we didn't.

Yes, but the non-crazy Dems wanted to do that, to sweep it under the rug and not expose any more of their craziness. All the Republicans voted nay. Amash voted with the Dems.
If there is anything that strikes fear into Nancy Pelosi's dead, black heart, it's the idea of O'CrazyHo, Taliban, BroFo, and Ringo ranting on national television for public consumption, and that's exactly what a Trump impeachment hearing would produce.

No, Amash voted to go ahead with Impeachment. I don't think anyone has anything "on" Amash, it's just that he went down that same Never Trump path that Ace described a couple of years ago. He probably listened to Kristol and thought he could get a lot of publicity about being the Leader of the Anti-Trump Republicans or some such nonsense, so he jumped out there and called for Impeachment when the Mueller Report came out.

I think he was shocked to find out that all his financial backers abandoned him, as did all of his one time voters. Now it's too late, he's too proud to walk it back (not that it would matter) and he's thrown away his entire political career for nothing. It really doesn't matter what he says or does anymore, he's finished.

And that, as Ace predicted, is the inevitable path that any Never Trumping Republican will find himself on. Too bad for Amash that he never heard that advice.

268 I was looking for the practical impact of the Contempt resolutions against Barr and Ross - apparently the only practical effect is that it will allow the Dems to sue Barr and Ross in Federal Court, to try to force them to respond to a subpoena for documents in the Census Immigration Question case, which in fact is already moot.

i can think of a half dozen ways off the top of my head that Barr and Ross can push back any court hearing on that for at least a year and a half, well after the next election. And if the next House is Republican, then it will all be dropped.

Oh I forgot there is one other option - Pelosi can send a note over to Barr demanding that he arrest himself. HA!

But then I've come to realize, more and more, both for myself and others, that "who you are" really doesn't mean nearly as much as What You Do, and the choices you make."

Which is a principal reason why "X is a racist" is such a vacuous argument. Accepting, even for argument's sake, that a person possesses some (even minor) portion of a character flaw, which is increasingly defined to include anything said about anyone, what difference does it make in the scheme of things, if that person is a gifted brain surgeon, or even a good husband and father?

It's as invalidating to say x "is vain" or x "likes money too much" in my opinion, though this is heresy in the present time.

2. Don Junior, unless he is a total chip off the old block, will be seen as a disappointment.

417 1) The Democrats hate Trump and seize on every single thing he says.

2) The Democrats ignore the horrible things done by Democrats.

3) Trump accurate describes something terrible the Democrats have done.

4) democrats either have to deny it is true. Side with the radical assholes in their own party, or ignore trump.

Guess which one they pick? They actually usually try to get away with #1 - lie and deny. But Trump keeps it up, and the more he says it, the harder the lie is to maintain. So then they go with number 2 - closing ranks with the radical assholes.

It really is a brilliant strategy - He makes them either cut the radicals loose, lie about them, or defend them.

What target must the enemy hold at all costs? Make him pay that price - "all costs". make him expend time and energy defending places thought safe. better yet, make them defend things at high cost that they don't really even want. MOST democrats would happily jettison the Squad. But they can't. They would be called racist and worse.

Posted by: rickl at July 17, 2019 06:59 PM (sdi6R)

A thought by C.S. Lewis always stuck with me on the topic. He was considering the situation of people who think they aren't good enough, or aren't the right kind of person, or don't think they have enough faith, the kind of thing that gives them doubt about themselves, and depression.

So he proposed, Consider a man who does indeed have "bad thoughts", but he chooses not to act on them, and instead he is helpful to his neighbors, loyal to his family, diligent at his work, he doesn't lie, he respects others, but he still isn't sure that he's a very "good" man. Which is more important, what he does, or who he "thinks" he is?

and he went on, that case may be a bit difficult, but then consider the opposite case. Take a Man who believes all of the Right Things, he thinks Good Thoughts constantly, he is absolutely Sure that he is a Good Man - and yet this man cheats his neighbors, steals from his employers, is a constant burden to his family, is always unfaithful to his wife - is this man a Good man, or a bad one? Which is more important, what he thinks, or what he does?

and he concluded with this - What is true of one, is true of the other.

492 Austria-Hungary didn't WANT to go to war over archduke Ferdinand, they could have cared less. But they couldn't just let it GO. So they attacked Serbia, and Russia attacked them, and Germany attacked Russia, and France and England attacked Germany...and WW1.

The Democrats don't WANT to defend the squad - most probably fucking hate those four turds, and none are worth defending. But they can't NOT defend them. They would be called racist or sexist if they didn't. So they have to defend them, and the squad is further emboldened to say and do stupid shit.

Now, republicans are also forced to (moderately) defend trump, but in that case trump is fucking worth something. he's the president. he has power.

It's like there is some holy shrine in the middle of the desert. Trump attacks it, and because it is this holy shrine, the dems must expend every once of energy defending it, even though it is strategically useless and hard to defend. On the flip side, the dems attack trump, and we defend him, but in our case. he's the capital city, and major arms manufacturer supplying the entire war effort.

Its a brilliant strategy. Over time, as more men and materials are sacrificed defending the remote shrine, you generate a split in the enemy, between those who must defend it and those that see it as a waste. That can't ever happen on our side - we must defend trump no matter what or utterly lose the war.
