Tough choice faces the Heterodox AcademyUm, the correct word is "mission." Their mission is an important one. A common English word which just happens to be the correct word. Hint: If it says it in the Mission Statement, that might be a clue that we're talking about its mission, not it's "raison d'etre." "Raison d'etre" (circonflex omitted because of formatting problems) is the wrong word. It's a matter of usage -- as Twain said, the difference between the right word and the not-right word is the difference between the lightning and the lightning bug. You could say "the raison d'etre of Ford Motors is to sell cars and make a profit at doing so," but that would be fucking stupid, wouldn't it? Raison d'etre is not used to explain what something's obvious, part-of-the-very-corporate-charter mission is. It's used to say that something, thought it might not be obvious and might not be a common or literal Reason for Being, is, in a metaphyiscal or philosophical sense, something's reason for living. You could say "His raison d'etre is promoting the arts," if it's a private passion, and not what it says right on his office door. If it says "Vice President for Promotion of the Arts," that's not his raison d'etre. It is merely his job. Now, you could say it's his life's work or his life's mission, if it is that. If he was fighting for the promotion for the arts before he had the job, you could say, "Even before landing the job, advocating for the arts was his raison d'etre." But you can't just say that someone's designated function is their raison d'etre. A tuna can's raison d'etre is not to hold tuna. If it says it right on the tin, that's not a raison d'etre, that's just what it does. This annoys me anyway because, okay, so, yeah, I speak French. And a lot of these fucking cuck idiots think that's it's impressive to use Basic Bitch French that is so basic it's not even French, it's English (raison d'etre is an English term, now), and then they use it incorrectly on top of that. But I guess the Idiots pretending to be intellectuals who read their twitter feeds are impressed by this. It's a bit like Jonah using a very easily translated bit of German. It's not impressive. It's stupid, it's Basic Bitch, it's an easy affectation of being intellectual because the user has no way to do the hard work of being a real intellectual. And it's poseur. It's frimeur. Pardon my French. By the way, earlier this week, Jonah Goldberg, get very much this!, dropped a Simspons reference from 1999 to show Today's Youth how he's "with it" and "down." It just never gets old. Like GAS STATION SUSHI. Jonah's jokes, like his fat, sweaty face, age like salad. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I always took Raison D'etre to have a stronger meaning than 'mission'. It is not just their job, but the reason they were born/made.
I can sort of understand the usage here, but people who say 'I was born for this, it is what I am for.' always come off a bit douchey in real life. Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 17, 2019 04:39 PM (ycWCI) Posted by: ace at July 17, 2019 04:39 PM (PbpT7) 67

I started running across "cuck" in comment sections about 2014-2015 on sites like Taki's. The usage was always and exclusively a reference to mixed-race people. The raison d'etre for using the phrase was to refer to white women who have children with non-white men. They thus allow the white race to "cucked."
It's a reference seemingly to cuckold porn, which is, apparently, almost always full of vignettes of Men of Color having sex with white women while their husbands watch. It's taken on a whole other meaning, sure, but it's always struck me as disgusting and utterly creepy that it caught on. I was pretty disappointed Ace decided to run with this insult like he did. The GOP has just deflated like a used condom. It just depends on which side of the sheath you're on when it's all done, eh? Posted by: Miles Dyson at July 17, 2019 04:40 PM (TeOcQ) 69

I don't get that one either. I guess it has some tiny nuance of meaning (nuance is a french word meaning "shade," or even "nuance") that is part of its meaning, but not too much. there's a term "joie de laide," meaning "joy of (the) ugly," which is a term in art and film meaning seeing the beauty in ugliness. I guess that would be an acceptable term to use because it has an established meaning in art and film across languages. Posted by: ace at July 17, 2019 04:48 PM (PbpT7) 135

"Reason for being" comes up a lot in Thomistic and Thomistic-derived philosophy, specifically in teleological arguments and Natural Law. The idea is that to know a thing's purpose is also to know its highest and best use, and that being so informed one can more readily identify the misuse or even ab-use of that thing.

S'en vouloir -- that's a verb I picked up. It means "to be angry at, have an issue with." That meaning is completely idiomatic and cannot be guessed from the basic vocabulary (reflexive se, the nonspecific object pronoun "en," and the verb for "to want.") Another one he used a lot was something for "cheated on" -- something like, can't remember now, se [word for deceive or trick]. Posted by: ace at July 17, 2019 04:53 PM (PbpT7) 179

A nice little piece of added justice I just noticed - the Gibson's attorney's billed a huge amount of hours, over 14,000 I think at $290 per hour. Objectively, that could look unreasonable BUT... in the hearing, the attorney's pointed out that Oberlin's defense team had already billed for more hours than that. (15,000, iirc) It sure looks to me like the Oberlin attorney's massively overbilled their client, especially for the results they received, BUT the Judge ruled that Oberlin didn't have the right to claim that the Gibson's legal costs were unreasonable, since they had already accepted a greater amount on their part as being reasonable. In practical terms, since Oberlin had already allowed their SJW legal pals to massively overbill them on the case, the Gibson's legal team gets to overbill them by just as much. Sweet!!! Our master plan:
1) Double the price of electricity 2) Mandate the use of electric cars and all-electric buildings, thereby more than doubling electric consumption 3) Allow the use of unreliable forms of electric generation, like wind and solar. Give special emphasis to solar, because it's fun to lose a major chunk of your electrical generation every time the sun sets. 4) Profit! Posted by: Berkeley! at July 17, 2019 05:05 PM (I2/tG) 281

Funny that you mention "poutine". Vladimir Putin´s last name, pronounced in French, sounds exactly as the word "putain" (whore). When Putin became known in the international scene in the early 80s, the French had to re-invent, so to speak, his last name to avoid insulting him. For this reason, his last name is pronounced and published in French as Poutine. Posted by: Coco at July 18, 2019 03:52 PM (2Cm6i) 516
I knew French-sounding douchebaggery in this country was institutionalized the first time I heard about the Steele "Dossier". In English, the correct ecpression would have been "the Steele Papers". Except there were no actual papers.
