In all seriousness, there was some stupid discrimination against women in the early astronaut program. And John Glenn was part of it. They waived the college degree requirement for him, and he made some blanket statement about all women being "unqualified" even though there were some well-qualified applicants.

Here's something from the article:

"The most recent lesson emerged in April, when NASA had scheduled a spacewalk that was, quite by accident, staffed by two female astronauts. The agency had to restaff the spacewalk because it had only one spacesuit that was the correct size for both women."

I don't categorize that as anti-woman. It's just your run-of-the-mill government ineptitude.

48 If we do not acknowledge the gender bias of the early space program, it becomes difficult to move past it.

Move past a meritocracy?

That's brilliant.

And what sort of "gender bias" is the New York Slimes talking about, given that they acknowledge no less than 627 different genders, role-claims, animal spirits and the like?

In order to satisfy the New York Slimes and the rest of the totally insane, lunatic left we would have to send only crews that were multiples of the 627 different genders (and probably a multiple for races and race identities, too, I guess). No space project with less than 2508 people would be allowed to even be considered. Because they are necessary for the success of any mission. NECESSARY!!!!

. . .

One source says "oxygen, magnesium, silicon, iron, aluminum, and calcium," but admits we could find those easily here. Another mentions helium-3 as part of the fuel for fusion reactors, which of course we don't have yet. Remember, too, the asteroids have pummeled the moon for eons; there could be a lot of valuable minerals and metals from them.

But we could also have centers for geriatric medicine. Imagine weighing only 1/6th of your current weight? (You'd still mass the same, but weigh less.) A lot easier on your heart and blood vessels, and bones and joints. You'd need to exercise, but then you need to do that here.

This article is so easy to pick apart.

"Cady Coleman, an astronaut who has flown on two space shuttles and traveled to the space station, stands 5 feet 4 inches tall and remains the smallest person to ever do a spacewalk. While she was training in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab, she had to improvise padding to wear inside her spacesuit."

Is she complaining about anti-feminism, or is she just factually telling how she solved her problem?

This is one of those examples where you can't even tell because of the bias of the reporter. It happened to a friend of mine who was interviewed for an article about bias in another industry.

117 How do they know no women were involved, I mean, besides the Hidden Figures math women?

Some family of mine got a special tour of NASA in FL as part of a science museum employees trip. One of the tours was led by a woman who was a NASA seamstress for most of the critical years of space exploration.

Did you know that every space suit, all of the material inside the space capsule, and even the shingles of the space shuttles (each one is encased in Teflon fabric) are ***hand sewn***? These women had to sew through dense, Teflon-coated material at 12 stitches per inch. That is incredibly detailed, painstaking, expert work. Sure, we don't hear about women such as these seamstresses - they are part of so many nameless, faceless men and women on the team that got men on the mon and other subsequent flights.

This NYT lady needs to STFU and learn history.

251 Does the degradation of the NYT to its comically ridiculous condition reflect the wider degradation of society, or is it one of the drivers?

Have a friend who gets a fair amount of national media on big issues who grew up when the NYT still had some real reporters and of course the editorial board wasn't a freakshow of dim racists. A few years ago I asked how he could still pay any attention to it and he sort of weakly replied that one had to in order to be part of the general Beltway buzz. I think he's finally moved on even from that vestige of interest.

But America is the ultimate victim when there simply aren't many real news-gathering operations. Fine to celebrate the deserved collapse of the old institutions but the absence of new real ones is not encouraging.

Didn't OChumpo make "muslim outreach" the mission of NASA? How's that working out?

-------

Well a few years back, some imam issued a fatwa against space travel, so not well.

The fatwa against space travel was silly for a couple of reasons.

For one thing, it assumes that Muslims will one day be advanced enough to travel in space, which will never happen. Ever.

For another, his reasoning was that the Muslim spacemen (I know, I can't stop laughing, either) wouldn't be able to genuflect toward Mecca from space, because there's no East or West or North or South. Apparently, he doesn't understand that space is three-dimensional, or something. Who knows.

What a bunch of 'tards.

True enough. But when the process is "no females" that kind of simplifies the process.

There was, iirc, a black Vietnam vet pilot that Kennedy wanted to include in the program, but said pilot had no real interest in becoming an astronaut. So "diversity" goes back a ways in American politics.

Yes ... the Apollo program was a failure ... Yep ...

The key to leftist thinking is that no jobs require any actual expertise, so anyone can do anything and the only reason someone doesn't do something is because mean white men don't let them do it. This is the essence of modern marxism.

Kibbutzim took this idea seriously and actually used to have everyone rotate through every job. That didn't last too long.

I recently went back to college, graduated three years ago.

One class which was a 400/500 class on Mars (my degree is in Earth
and Planetary Science, the department has done stuff with the Curiosity
rover and hosts a/the national Meteoritics something or other) and I
realized one day that the grad students in the class were 1) all female
and 2) all but one shorter than 5 feet.

And it seemed *practical* that this would be an obvious good
selection for astronauts. Scientists who are actually studying
extraterrestrial bodies, so they've got the STEM chops, and small... a
100 pound person has got to use less oxygen and food than a 180 pound
person. And since they were more or less all the same size the suits
could be standardized, and that's important.

But note, five feet and less would disqualify most women as well. Still seems like it would be practical, though.

I did get a chance to answer one of them about mining asteroids, who was concerned that economic development was opposed to science. (I'd given a presentation on asteroid mining.) I just told her that anything that gets us out there (with a wave of my hand to the ceiling) was good for science.

So how do we get it from there to here efficiently in quantity?

Posted by: irongrampa at July 18, 2019 12:45 PM (KATBx)

Two points:

1. It can't be done efficiently (actually, economically) with current technology (nor with technology likely available within the next 20 years).

2. The minerals and stuff brought back will have to be necessary for some reason, to make the economics work. For example, if Elon Musk brings a 10,000 ton solid gold asteroid to Earth's surface, the result will be a collapse of gold's value.

Yep. The problem is that STEM fields tend to select for Asperger's types, much like chess. People who are utterly consumed by and focused on one thing, to the exclusion of practically everything else. That's more of a male thing than a female one, and so I suspect that a lot of women are put off by that.

But if you don't have that focus, you're unlikely to attain the upper reaches of STEM. You can't train part-time for the Olympics, or for the SEALs. You're either all-in, or you go home.

Once saw an article weeping about how few woman coaches there were in women's college basketball. But a coach and assistants of any sport at a top-tier school work insane hours, like 100 a week. Few women have the stamina and single-mindedness for that.

And while sexism may be part of the reason why there aren't any women umpires in baseball, the path to an MLB career is unutterably sucky.

Well put, donna.

The "send her back" isn't helpful right now. First off, she's not going back. And she's doing much more harm to herself all on her own. Let her own words be her undoing. And if anything comes to light about immigration fraud, then let it play out without Trump being misconstrued as anti-immigrant. Yes, they'll try it anyway, but it will ring hollow. 835 "OT, I'm listening to the classical music station on Amazon Prime. Since when is the theme to Harry Potter classical music??"
Jordan, you just hit on one of my pet peeves: the exclusion of film music from the classical canon.
Suites from the film scores by Sergei Prokofiev, for "Battleship Potemkin", "Ten Days That Shook the World", "Alexander Nevsky", and "Ivan the Terrible" are an acknowledged part of the classical canon. So too is film music Eric Wolfgang Korngold, who was an opera composer before he fled the Nazis and came to Hollywood. Likewise, the movie music of Philip Glass and John Adams.
Some of the best classical music of the 20th century, at least in the US, was written for the movies. The music of Dmitri Tiompkin, Bernard Herrmann, Howard Shore, James Horner, or Danny Elfman, among others, is delightful, and often powerful. For example, I defy anyone - especially this week - to see the launch scene from "Apollo 13" and not be moved by the music.
In the past, composers wrote "incidental music", which in effect was movie music, but played for live theater. The incidental music by Schubert ("Rosamunde"), Grieg ("Peer Gynt"), Beethoven ("The Ruins of Athens"), and Mendelssohn ("Midsummer Night's Dream") are beloved parts of the classical canon. Composers for film are simply carrying on this tradition.

John Williams is an accomplished composer in many fields; for example, I've heard his violin concerto performed by Gil Shaham, and is an outstanding work. And he has arranged music from his films into suites for symphony orchestra that are extraordinary. For example, he arranged the music from "Schindler's List" into a concerto for violin and orchestra that, when I heard it performed live recently, moved me to tears. And yes, the suite of music from the Harry Potter films captures much of the delight in the wizarding world that the books describe.
So, since when is the music from the Harry Potter films classical music? Since the day it was composed. The music itself may not be your bag of chips, but it most definitely is legitimate part of the classical canon, and should be treated and enjoyed as such.
