Overnight Open Thread (07-16-2019)

[Misanthropic Humanitarian is otherwise engaged, and Ace's D&D die, repurposed for who gets Tuesday night coverage, landed on "Dildo." The downside is that I usually get a head start on the Art Thread on Tuesday nights, so next week will probably just be a Lucian Freud/Ivan Albright retrospective]

I have a friend who's an artist and has sometimes taken a view which I don't agree with very well. He'll hold up a flower and say "look how beautiful it is," and I'll agree. Then he says "I as an artist can see how beautiful this is but you as a scientist take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing," and I think that he's kind of nutty. First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me too, I believe. Although I may not be quite as refined aesthetically as he is ... I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time, I see much more about the flower than he sees. I could imagine the cells in there, the complicated actions inside, which also have a beauty. I mean it's not just beauty at this dimension, at one centimeter; there's also beauty at smaller dimensions, the inner structure, also the processes. The fact that the colors in the flower evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting; it means that insects can see the color. It adds a question: does this aesthetic sense also exist in the lower forms? Why is it aesthetic? All kinds of interesting questions which the science knowledge only adds to the excitement, the mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds. I don't understand how it subtracts.

Another man wins gold in women's weightlifting
The transgender conquest of women's sports continued over the weekend as a New Zealand weightlifter took home multiple gold medals at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.

Laurel Hubbard won two gold medals and a silver in the three heavyweight categories, for women weighing more than 87 kilograms, or 192 pounds, finishing first in the snatch-lift and combined categories and second in the clean-and-jerk.

The 41-year-old weightlifter was born as Gavin Hubbard and reportedly transitioned while in the mid-30s.

Of course he did.

I'm thinking that the hammer & sickle stickers really, really bothered them and they want to throw it right back to us thinking that somehow we would believe it.

91 A few years ago I had a "The Media is the Enemy" sticker on my car for a little while. I put it of the black rubber or plastic part of the bumper, not the painted part.

If I put a Trump sticker on it, I'd be worried about it being keyed or the tires slashed.

I died. I only wish I could have hung around to see the manlet's hissy fit.

She said the original crocs, made in the US, are a good resell item if you can find them. Then the manufacturing moved to Mexico. Quality went down but still decent, not as good for resale. Now they're made in China. Don't bother, not even worth paying a nominal amount at the thrift store for them.

I believe articles of impeachment have been introduced into the House
quite a few times since Trump has been elected. They either die without
being brought up for votes or have a dozen nutjobs voting yes and then
they die. They have to be voted on and sent to committee hearings first,
before ever ending up for a full House vote.

Here is a Newsweek article from 2017, stating that an article of
impeachment had been introduced by Democrats EVERY MONTH of the Trump
presidency at the publishing of the article.

There is no easy answer about what to do about addictive substances. However this statement is simply not true. How much do we spend feeding and housing the children of addicts because their behavior makes them unemployable and useless. It isn't just that they steal to get money to buy drugs, their drug use makes them a mess. They ruin their children's lives.

⇉ Hey, Richard P Feynman: shut up and smell the roses. (Actually his friend sounds like a jerk.)

⇉ Was it Milton Friedman who said you can have a welfare society or open borders but not both? Anyway, same applies to substances and other abuses: you can have self-endangerment or gov't health care, but not both.

Basically, it's always the collectivist governmenters who mess with everything.

⇉ I'm sorry, Ernie, but who the he!! was saying there is anything noble in being superior to your fellow men?

Never read any Hemingway. Well, the gal with that last name, I've read some of her stuff.

⇉ So, Oscar divides people as charming (good) and tedious (bad) but says good/bad is an error. Wot an idjit. (We use patriot and traitor.)

Don't think I've ever read any of Wilde, either, beyond a few pithyquotes.

⇉ Fake woman beats real women in sports. Shockah!

I'm with Vic. What would folks have done 100 years ago. (Locked up lunatics, tar and feathers, whatever seems right.)

⇉ Dads! Indeed!

(Note to CBD: Put a linefeed in there after "Dads.")

⇉ Bumper sickos!

I had a bumper sticker once. Only once. A friend had printed it. Said: "Visit beautiful Oblivion." Mom was afraid it was some kind of drug reference; I just thought it was funny. Covered up the "MACH I" on the tailfin of my '70 Mustang. I was an idiot even then.

⇉ Well, that was fun, CBD, thanks.

On the other hand, when I started studying Russian, about the only Russian words I knew came from Clockwork Orange. (Burgess based his made-up language on Russian.)

446 I've earned two Iron Butt pins in my motorcycle career.

The first, was San Antonio, TX to San Diego CA in 1986. About 1,600 miles, and I got the Tuscon, AZ P.D. desk officer to "time stamp" the same form that the Leon Valley, TX P.D. had stamped some 23 hours and just over a thousand miles earlier. Total time to San Diego was 32 hours. A nap on a picnic bench outside of Las Cruces, NM and under a tree in Yuma, AZ, helped more than a little.

As did standing under the radiator fill hose at a gas station in Gila Bend, AZ. 117 degrees in the shade, and that's the closest I ever truly came to dying on the bike, including a leg-breaking wreck in '98.

The second, in 1996, was from San Antonio, TX to Watertown, TN, about forty minutes East of Nashville.

One thousand and forty one miles, seventeen and one-half hours.

That trip continued on to a convention in Columbus, OH, then downhill to another in South Carolina, followed by a return Westward to San Antonio.

The Honda Gold Wing can roll some miles under those wheels.

- Slaughterhouse Five

- Bonfire of the Vanities
- A Clockwork Orange (which I've heard is far more violent/disturbing than Kubrick's movie)

471 Raton New Mexico - oh there was a memory there! Me and my wifes family from Shreveport were headed to Estes Park for a big family reunion years ago. (I think it was the OJ trial year) We were traveling in convoy, a car and two vans, all full of people and kids. So we pull into Raton late, nobody's eaten, we pull up to some chicken place 5 minutes before they close, and 15 of us pile in wanting to be fed. And I can tell the employees had everything clean and were ready to go home, and were clearly pissed we were there. But we outnumbered them 5 -1, so too bad.

and then they gave us some food, and couple of the older kids were running around playing some chase game since they'd been locked in the car all day, and then another knocked his drink on the floor, and then a box of chicken went under a table, and than the 7 year old's stomach had it with all the traveling , and he puked up an incredible amount right in front of the counter, and then the 2 older kids playing chase ran through it and within a couple minutes had tracked puke footprints up and down every part of that store.

The employees just sat there in shock watching us with their mouths open. Within 10 minutes of arriving, we completely demolished what had been an absolutely pristine dining area in the most vile way possible. And then we just said "bye!'

yeah that was rotten, but I wasn't gonna clean all that puke up when I wasn't being paid to, and it wasn't even my kid. As we left, you know the saying - if Looks could Kill....

A police department in Tennessee is warning people to stop flushing drugs down their toilets or sinks, out of fear that it could create "meth-gators."

The Loretto Police Department posted the warning on Facebook after officers found that a suspect unsuccessfully tried to flush meth and paraphernalia at his home.

Police say the flushing of drugs has become an issue because the drugs can end up in retention ponds for processing before it is sent downstream.

"Ducks, Geese, and other fowl frequent our treatment ponds and we shudder to think what one all hyped up on meth would do," the police department wrote on Facebook. "Furthermore, if it made it far enough we could create meth-gators in Shoal Creek and the Tennessee River down in North Alabama."

GILCHRIST COUNTY, Fla. A Florida man is accused of breaking into the home and cutting off a man's penis because he caught the man having sex with his wife.

According to First Coast News, the victim told police his neighbor broke into his home during the morning hours Sunday, forced him into his bedroom at gunpoint, tied him up and then cut off his penis with a pair of scissors.

Two children were home at the time of the break-in and assault.

The suspect was identified as 49-year-old Alex Bonilla, who fled from the home to his own house across the street, still holding his neighbor's penis. The sheriff's office later discovered Bonilla caught the victim having sex with the suspect's wife in May.

Bonilla his being held on a $1.25 million bond. The victim is in the hospital in stable condition.

514 One of those boys was about 9, i think, that year, and that was the year he was obsessed with Sticks. (he grew up to be a very good bowhunter, so this finally got channeled in a useful direction) But that whole year at family gatherings, he'd always have a stick. (His grandfathers house was rural, on some acreage, and that's where we usually met). He'd hit the cars with the stick, he'd hit his brother with a stick, he'd hit his cousins with the stick, he'd hit the pets with the stick, his mother would try to make him behave but didn't work much. (his dad would yell but never get his fat ass off the couch, and they boy knew it)

he finally learned his lesson one time when he came running up to the house, crying and yelling horribly. The adults all jumped up and tried to find out what catastrophe had happened, and one of his cousins came up and said "you know grampa's beehives out back? Well David saw them too and he wanted to see what would happen if he jammed the stick up inside one!" Yeah, he got some good experience that day, and never forgot it.

At the end of the blistering performance, you can hear scattered boos. They thought he was too loud... and he did play LOUD. That's the thing with those 1950's Fender tube amps... to get them to sound great -- at that perfect position where they're just starting to distort... juuust starting -- they have to be cranked. And if you look at the video you can see he draped blankets over his two Fender Deluxe Reverbs.

596 I had a teacher in college in one of those really basic "can you write the words" classes, who was way too bright to be in that kind of class, who opined about bumper stickers and their effectiveness.

He said, I could tape a lengthy essay about the virtues of nuclear power to the bumper of my car, but would anybody take the time to read it?

For better, or for worse, bumper stickers present things pretty clearly.

Alas, mostly it's the feebs on the Left who do this.

631 Av Guy, dunno where you abide in the Gay Area, but for a few weeks now we've had absolutely classic summer weather - good marine layer, early morning fog and overcast, burning off by mid-morning, nice afternoon breeze, hot sun/cool air. Beaches have not been entirely sunny, presumably to the dismay of the turistas who didn't do their homework, but nice. Water's average temp for here - mid-6Os - likely to hit 7O by Labor Day, and surf quite good for summer [typically it's flat/bad].

632 @579. SoCal is just lovely if you can afford it. Not sure where you live now but start looking at real estate prices here first. We've lived here a long time but the politics and tax burden are just about equal to the beauty. We are seriously thinking about jumping ship to more hospitable if not sunny territory. I thinks it's the politics shoved down your throat which is the worst. But ridiculous taxes to pay for illegal healthcare while we pay higher and our kids pay higher for college to fund free illegal tuition, well that really is getting to the last straw.

He was actually just trying to wipe some piss droplets off his pants. She told him she would continue to live in his house for free, and collect a salary, and do no work whatsoever, and if he had a problem with that she would tell his wife what (she thought) she'd seen.

Yep, I think Larson's character from The League is who she really is.

It was the other way 'round. Fuchs was senior, having received his PhD in 1937. Feynman was a young, low-paid punk by comparison, having only received his PhD in 1942.
Fuchs let Feynman borrow his car to go visit his wife, who was dying of tuberculosis at the time.

I once saw a hitchhiker taking a leak right beside the Trans-Canada Highway. I think in Manitoba, but might've been in Saskatchewan. Nothing but wheat as far as the eye could see (maybe a farmhouse out near the horizon or something). No concealment to be had.
So... he stood behind a speed limit sign, such that most of his wedding tackle was concealed by the pole from oncoming traffic on that side of the road, stream of piss clearly visible arcing out from behind the pole.
Hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go.

685 The female fossa, from Madagascar, will climb in a tree when she is ready to mate attracting all
males in the area with her scent.

The males will gather at the base of the tree with each ascending the tree one at a time over the course of several hours, each breeding with the female, at which time the female leaves the tree and another female will take her place.

The penis of the male fossa is disproportionately large, extending to its forelegs when rigid and also is spiked with reverse facing spikes that make it painful for the female to disengage during coitus should she change her mind.

707 Here to mutter in the corner, because no one here's awake.

My mom moved into an assisted living facility at the end of June. It's an hour away. I'd been her sole caretaker (very little help from brother) for 4 years; every day, since my dad passed. Myriad health problems & a dangerous pain med issue that forced me to dole them out to her once a day. And bitter fighting often erupted because of it.

I lived close by, so was called on often. And now, it's just me. In the two weeks since, my health has suffered: headaches, back trauma, etc. A friend told me, this is normal.

Haven't been out to see her yet, ostensibly because work & health ish. And I've been sleeping a LOT.

Nothing to be done I guess. Just wait it out. In the meantime, it's night and it's dark and I'm alone.

You've probably already been told this, but auto stores (and Walmart) sell AC refill canisters with a gauge attached. Unless it's the compressor or some mechanical problem you may be able to get it going again for $30 or so.

Or take it to a shop and they'll fill it and add dye to find the leak for $45-60.

Lurking in the back of my mind is the knowledge that, no matter who we elect, at this stage of the game we've reached the point of no return. With 25-40 million illegal aliens here, with 100s of 1000s streaming across the border every year now and gaming the legal system with their rehearsed lies, the end result is what will ultimately be the destruction of America in all ways we hold dear. It can't be stopped. Congress won't stop it, no matter who is in the majority (Trump would...if he could, but he can't all by himself). The courts won't stop it. They aren't going back involuntarily. They aren't going back voluntarily. It's a crushing realization and I try and push it out of my head, but it's back there lurking all the time. And I'm not stupid. I see the writing on the wall and there's nothing I can do about it.
