This is one of the greatest works of political propaganda of all time. It's power is in its appropriation of religious imagery--namely the Pieta and various Lamentations, to create a martyred saint for the great Revolutionary Cause. David was also in charge of Marat's funeral.

Detail of The Death of Marat showing the paper held in Marat's left hand. The letter reads (in French) "Il suffit que je sois bien malheureuse pour avoir droit a votre bienveillance" or in English, "Given that I am unhappy, I have a right to your help" - Marat (24 May 1743 - 13 July 1793) was one of the leaders of the Montagnards, the radical faction ascendant in French politics during the Reign of Terror until the Thermidorian Reaction. Charlotte Corday was a Girondin from a minor aristocratic family and a political enemy of Marat who blamed him for the September Massacre. She gained entrance to Marat's rooms with a note promising details of a counter-revolutionary ring in Caen. Marat suffered from a skin condition that caused him to spend much of his time in his bathtub; he would often work there. Corday fatally stabbed Marat, but she did not attempt to flee. She was later tried and executed for the murder. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler at July 15, 2019 09:43 AM (+y/Ru) 75

Mornin', all,
I came through the tropical storm fine; never lost power or had any real inconvenience. But -- The heavy rain on Wednesday flooded the passenger footwells of my new-to-me BMW sedan. The car started and drove fine, and I got home. But the windshield wipers and windows started misbehaving. I disconnected the battery so no more windows would open, bagged the unclosable windows, and had the car towed to the local dealer. Flo's Bros have opened a claim for me. But the advice I'm getting from online BMW forums says, "Total the car." Progressive is due to inspect the beast on Wednesday. Any advice welcome. I've driven Buicks and Oldsmobiles and Fords through deeper water than this. If a BMW is that delicate, I'm going back to Buick. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at July 15, 2019 09:49 AM (ClOmq) 97

Posted by: kraken at July 15, 2019 09:53 AM (bCLt0) ========== I think it had a lot to do with the fact that the instigators were well educated and the crown was so far away. They could burn George in effigy all day every day, but they were never closer than a few thousand miles from him. And, the Americans considered themselves British through most of the Revolution. It was about establishing their own rights as English subjects, not breaking away (which it evolved into and many at the beginning instigated for, of course). Our Revolution really is an interesting historical anomaly. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at July 15, 2019 09:55 AM (VyAV0) 124

Corday was was a Leftist, just not as radical as Marat and David. She murdered Marat because she thought he was ruining the spirit of the Revolution. That opened the door for Robespierre to take over, who plotted against Danton to take complete control. It's hard to say whether the murder made the Revolution worse. Since Marat was a total psychopath, it's probable the Terror would have happened anyway, and lasted longer than just a year.

Drying the module out, and clearing the fault codes (required a scan tool, not just a code reader) fixed it. How did so much water get into the car? Barring a window or two left down, there's a fault right there. Seems to me that your problem, and the one I had, is a result of moisture glitching logic circuits. Water is not sufficiently conductive to pass enough juice to power a window down or operate a lock solenoid, but a logic gate in the brain box only has to "see" a little voltage to think, "OK, I will turn on now." Disconnecting the battery saved me from having to replace the battery ($$$$) or bag any more windows or sunroof. Of course the battery in a BMW is in the trunk. Once you close the trunk on a disconnected battery, to open the trunk you have to lower the rear seat and crawl into the compartment to pull a mechanical handle. The car was parked on a street that in my experience of 18 years rarely floods. The whole area was surprised at how much water fell in an hour. When I got back to the car at 11:30 am, water was an inch below the passenger door -- which suggests it was probably higher earlier. Maybe there was a faulty door seal --? Aside: The movie Danton staring Gerard Depardieu as Danton is great. And since the car is still under factory warranty until August, I can complain about that failure, maybe.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at July 15, 2019 10:07 AM (ClOmq) Ah. So the car was in a flood? Not rainfall, per se, entering the car, but surface water. It's next to impossible to make a car body completely watertight. Long enough immersion in standing water, and they all will take on water. If the insurance company does not give satisfaction, you could remove all the seats, and take out the carpets, dry all the wiring and any modules you discover, and put it back together. But that's a huge chore. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 15, 2019 10:16 AM (abNpZ) 227

At this time, David was an antitheist who wanted to erase any Christianity from French culture. One of the ways he did this was to replace God and the Saints with new, modern, "real" saints and martyrs". David last saw Marat the day before his was killed. They met while Marat soaked in his bath. The pose is a direct copy of the Pieta. The white blanket is a shroud. His skin is ivory-the white of heavenly innocence and purity. No hint of the ugly skin disease. The small cut on his chest drips blood, similar to many depictions of the Crucifixion where Christ's wounds are tiny and the blood is minimal. There is no background. Just the emptiness of the void. He seems to be laid out on an altar in a darkened room, with only a single light illuminating him. His face is peaceful, like he's asleep. No pain, fear, anger. If he's asleep, then he's not really dead. The letter is a rouse. He was killed by deception--like Judas in the Garden. The other letter on the box is from a destitute mother. She become the ideal mother in this story, and replaces Mary. This peace is fantastic in it's deviousness.

Posted by: USNtakim It is a biting mite that is smaller than a flea. Red in color, hence the name red bugs. Irritating bite, usually around the ankles, groin & armpits due to thinner skin. Willowed: I'm worried about 2020. My SIL and her ilk give me a window into lefty thinking. The push starting now is to vote for whomever ends up running against Trump. If a meth-head who feels xirself up in public runs, that's who will get the young vote.
My dad used to say that if a duck ran on either ticket, it would get 1/3 of the vote. But this FB (and I suppose Twitter) push is making me sick. Posted by: NaughtyPine at July 15, 2019 10:17 AM (/+bwe) The "young" vote might end up splitting itself into voting for an old, White coot that wants to take from the rich and give to the poor, for some drag queen story hour champion, or for somebody that proudly eats his boogers in public. The "normal" Demonicrats, if there is such a thing, will vote for another old, White coot for stability and veritas. Posted by: Anonymous White Male at July 15, 2019 10:22 AM (m79Dg) 268
Maybe there was a faulty door seal --? And since the car is still under factory warranty until August, I can complain about that failure, maybe.
That sounds most likely. Factory testing in Germany for car seals involves leaving a cat in the closed car overnight. If the cat has suffocated, the car is OK. I think a whole lot of "gourmet" food is just overhyped average fare that you could easily make yourself. The city of Minneapolis-stan voted 12-1 to ban single family zoning in the city. Which means any piece of land can be converted into apartments, condos, flop houses, you name it. It was done in the name of racial justice!!! Cuz you see, 100 years ago blacks weren't allowed to live in white areas or something.
That's the big leftie push right now. They've been trying to do that in California statewide for a couple years now, that San Francisco filth Scott Weiner keeps pushing it. They have managed to cram 'additional dwelling units' down everyone's throat, so R1 zoning throughout California now means you can have a 'junior ADU' (500sf max, 'convenience kitchen', no parking) or an 'ADU' (620sf max, full kitchen, must have parking) in any single-family property. We were looking at a place as a rental property in a nearby city that was ~6000sf lot, zoned R4 (though the lot size was too small to build four units, the most you could get on that lot is a duplex) because it's near a transit corridor (the other big leftie hot-button out here), the existing dwelling is a 1400sf house (would rent for $3800ish) with an add-on in-law that'd be easily permitted as an ADU (and rent for $1500ish). We got outbid by $200K. Posted by: JEM at July 15, 2019 10:40 AM (8erNz) 395

No? Then he's just a sanctimonious hypocrite who wants others to do and pay for that which he won't do on his own. Also, Kurt, which costs more? Did someone say 'Fair Housing Act"?
Read all the links to the analysis, and the Federal program. Maryland's Leftist idiots put this legislation shit up there every legislative session. And if you don't think it will be coming to a community near you at some point, guess again. It will be disguised by some nice 'Fair" sounding bill title. But it comes down to... You will be required to participate in the Federal Housing Voucher program, wether you want to or not. And if you chose to rent to the other applicant, who was paying for the rent out of their paycheck, instead of the voucher carrying applicant, it proves that you are a racist. https://bit.ly/2XQBnYr https://bit.ly/2XQBnYr Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at July 15, 2019 10:46 AM (cqNba) 428

Posted by: JoeF. at July 15, 2019 10:50 AM (NFEMn) Most parents think their kids are Jesus and fight off every indication that they're not, blaming others for any of their kids' failure to be utterly divine. That teaches the kid that they have no personal responsibility and if anything isn't perfect that they're a victim of someone/something. I have no problem telling kids "everyone has their own unique gifts and talents" but that also means that they have their own inabilities TOO. I remember once one of my sons was saying that his little brother, while great at large motor sports, wasn't all that coordinated. I was defending the less coordinated kid saying he was younger, etc. Then the less coordinated kid fell out of the chair he was sitting in, knocking over a pitcher of tea. Just because you aren't Jesus, doesn't mean you're bad, but you'd better know your challenges and learn to compensate. And you aren't a victim of the world, you're just human and you have to figure it out. Posted by: dagny at July 15, 2019 10:59 AM (nRWPy) 504

Same reasoning....fight racism and create affordable housing. In reality though it will have the opposite effect IMO. Developers won't build low end housing in expensive hoods since it's too expensive. They'll buy tear downs and build high end condos. Still sucks if you own a house next door, but it won't create anything near "affordable" housing. This is basically a giveaway to developers. As always, follow the money. Random things:
1) The painter David was a poster-propagandist, first for The Terror, & then for Bonaparte. A truly despicable man. 2) Unless Epstein committed NEW federal crimes, after he was sentenced in FL in 2008, the SDNY case against him will be dismissed. Andy McCarthy has explained why. And I haven't yet read about any NEW crimes, btw. 3) Trump's polls have taken a turn for the worse of late. I wish it were otherwise, & I hope he turns it around fast. 4) The trade negotiations with China aren't going well, & the likely result will be new tariffs on China (& reciprocal new tariffs on U.S. goods) this fall.
