In my book about my dad in WWII I snuck in a passage about him and his brothers kneeling in front of grandpa while he read the newspaper, looking at the backside of the paper. But I flipped it so that grandpa was reading the comics and the boys were devouring the front page news.

207 What an adorable portrait of a little girl playing 'grown-up'. It reminds me, in subject and approach, of the family oriented Scandi artists we've seen here.

Besides capturing the attitude and expression of the girl so well, his use of color for the skin tones and the light coming from the upper left is right on. The detail, both form and color, of the cane back of the chair really caught my eye. My grandparents had a chair like that and I immediately thought of it on seeing this painting.

Thanks to CBD. This painting and others Georgios Jakobides did are delightful. Nice way to end the week.

Posted by: mindful webworker - click for cat pic at July 19, 2019 10:10 AM (LO5Qy)

The real, significant thing about CNN's attack (and the left's of course) - is that they're not attacking Trump for "who he is" or even "what he does" - they are now openly attacking Trump because We support Him, and He supports Us. Of course, that's always been their only real complaint, and we always knew that, but like everything else, it's good to see all the cards on the table.

The only reason the Left hates Trump is because they hate Us.

He deserved more than honorary, but that's good to hear. He was a rare character actor of those days who could also headline a picture -- The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse and The Sea Wolf and The Woman in the Window were three examples.

Oh, before somebody checks me, Robinson's character in Ten Commandments wasn't the pyramid architect; that was Vincent Price. Robinson's character was basically an informer to Yul Brynner's Pharaoh.

The Nur family was well connected in the country led by the Marxist regime. Young Omar went to kindergarten at age four, their family lived in a secure compound in Mogadishu. When the regime was overtaken, the family caught a plane to escape the country. The average GDP per capita in Somalia was only $187 dollars in 2010 twenty years after they fled the country when the regime fell. Obviously, Nur's family was a privileged family.

Not to mention that it was well-established that the payments by himself, for the personal benefit of himself was never an in-kind political contribution, regardless of any political benefit that may have accrued to his campaign.

It was ludicrous and politically motivated from the get go. But it was hilarious watching lefties getting all lathered up over Cohen going to flip and the plea deal that included an admission of a campaign finance violation that never was, despite all the warnings to the contrary.

432 Key Largo is a crime movie that should be more exciting than it is. You've got Bogie, Bacall, Barrymore, Robinson in one of his patented gangster roles, Claire Trevor as a beautiful drunk, a hurricane bearing down on them . . . and somehow it can't measure up to Double Indemnity or White Heat or The Maltese Falcon for excitement and tension. Dunno why that is.

I have some dim memory as a kid of a serial in The Saturday Evening Post which featured a lot of these elements. But that would have been in the early Sixties, KL was long before, and I don't think KL was ever a novel. 486 Now Nurse has to say the best thing about Florida is Insomniac.

And maybe BBQ. B'Gal and I had lunch with them at a great little place down here with outstanding food. They're a cute couple IRL.

488 Isn't it interesting that while "The Slippery Slope" is a fallacy, it is usually true. "You let homos marry and what next? People marrying their pets?" "Why, yes! Thank you!"

Again, the slippery slope argument isn't a fallacy because its false, its a fallacy because it doesn't prove your argument. The fact that something can (or probably will) lead to bad things doesn't necessarily mean in and of its self it is bad.

491 477 JamesMadison, I finally saw Once Upon a Time in America-the long version-and was very disappointed. It starts off decent but just goes nowhere. The ending was a let down and there were entire scenes that were meaningless to the plot. What did you think?

==========

I love that long version.

The thing about really long movies is that they behave more like novels than what most people think of in terms of movies.

Scenes go longer and stray further from plot, digging deeper into character.

I think the relationship between Noodles and Max is a wonderful journey of friendship, hatred, and finally acceptance.

492 Yeah, it's Shakespeare done curiously wrong. It's hard to do Shakespeare wrong. You have to try at it.

I recall one work of Shakespeare that had a musical number in it. The one Branaugh did. Had Alicia Silverstone in it, they put her in the second row of dancers since she couldn't dance a step. It was pretty bad as I recall, so bad I have purposefully forgotten the name. Blechh.

493 I disagree about the length of Key Largo - the pace maintains the tension. Modern audiences want everything sped up, audiences of the time didn't have the same sensibility.

It's also worth pointing out the great performance of Claire Trevor, often overlooked. She's the one who got an academy award for that movie.

495 Yet another flaw in our post-1965 immigration policies is that the imbalanced immigration flows has now racialized all debates about immigration policy/preferences.

"Send her back" is now supposedly the functional equivalent of hurling a racial epithet, but maybe people should read up on some of the insults hurled at Caribbean-born Alexander Hamilton to see that a preference for not being told how to run your own country by a non-native (even one that literally fought next to George Washington) is not particularly a racial thing.

502 I was able to go out and hire a gang of hyenas to kill someone so, obviously, we have to treat Scar as innocent because anyone could have hired hyenas to kill Simba! And I'd hate to think we were condemning an innocent lion because you want to get a cricket match early to eat the best spectators.

504 https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger_Fremdenblatt

"The Hamburger Fremdenblatt was one of the most important daily newspapers of the 19th and early 20th century in Hamburg.

The newspaper was originally published in 1828 list of arriving strangers in Hamburg and appeared from September 24, 1864 Hamburg Hamburger stranger sheet . It came in 1907 in the possession of the publisher Albert Broschek and was expropriated in 1936 by the Nazis. At the beginning of September 1944 she was forcibly merged with the Hamburger Anzeiger and the Hamburg Tageblatt due to the war.

The Hamburger Fremdenblatt was distinguished from other newspapers by its unusually large format - so this sheet was immediately noticed among all other newspapers. In addition, the Hamburger Fremdenblatt illustrated as early as the 1920s, many of his articles with large photographs in the copper-plate printing - that was then, when newspapers still predominantly from " lead deserts " (ie almost only from texts) existed, a sensation.
