Study Finds Fruit Juice and Sugar-Sweetened Drinks Associated with Cancer, Artificially Sweetened Drinks Not Associated With Cancer

Before getting to that, let me toss this in here for anyone who's tired of my constant anti-sugar agitation.

Please report the below Thoughtcriminal for this unauthorized, non-accredited parody.

The medical experts accepted a theory with no evidence for it and foisted it on the country for fifty years in what has been called the largest, longest uncontrolled experiment in history.

We're finally now starting to test what this experiment has wrought.

Drinking large amounts of fruit juice may raise your risk of cancer, according to a big study which has found a link between the regular consumption of all kinds of sugary drinks and the likelihood of developing the disease.

The study, carried out in France, is the first substantial piece of research to find a specific association between sugar and cancer. Sugary drinks such as colas, lemonade and energy drinks have been linked to obesity, which is a cause of cancer, but the French researchers suggest there could also be other reasons sugar could trigger it.

The study, published in the BMJ, finds the association with cancer is just as strong with fruit juices as it is with colas. "When the group of sugary drinks was split into 100% fruit juices and other sugary drinks, the consumption of both beverage types was associated with a higher risk of overall cancer," it says.

...

"The recommendation from several public health agencies is to consume less than one drink per day. If you consume from time to time a sugary drink it won’t be a problem, but if you drink at least one glass a day it can raise the risk of several diseases -- here, maybe cancer, but also with a high level of evidence, cardiometabolic diseases."

Fruit juices showed the same association with cancer as colas. "The main driver of the association seems to be sugar, so when we just look at the sugar content per 100ml, regular Coke or 100% orange juice, for instance, are quite the same. So it's not so odd that we observe this association for fruit juices," said Touvier.

A lot of people have been saying for a decade or more that fruit juice is just Coca Cola with a side of vitamin C. This study is more confirmation of that.

They found that a 100ml increase in sugary drink consumption was associated with an 18% increased risk of overall cancer and a 22% increased risk of breast cancer.

There was no link between artificial sweeteners and cancer, but the numbers using artificial sweeteners were too small to be conclusive.

The study is here. High sugar doses, they say, might increase cancer rates as they increase obesity (which itself is linked to higher cancer rates), or it might increase the chances of cancer more directly -- through insulin resistance aka metabolic syndrome aka Syndrome X.

Apart from the obesity and adiposity pathways, mechanisms underlying a link between sugary drinks and cancer might involve insulin resistance caused by their high glycaemic index or glycaemic load, which have been related to breast cancer, hepatocellular cancer, and diabetes related carcinomas.

A weakness in the study is that it's just a questionnaire and self-tracking type of study, and people are usually not great at remembering and reporting everything they ate or drank.

Still, the American government declared a War on Eggs and Meat based on much, much weaker survey-style studies.

Posted by: Archer at July 11, 2019 01:27 PM (gmo/4)

Either, or even fresh juiced fruits. Fructose isn't any better for you than cane sugar. In fact it's actually more of a liver toxin. The benefit to fruit is that it has fiber which causes the release of the sugars to be delayed while the body breaks down the fiber. If you juice the fruit, there is no delay and it acts just like cane/beet or corn syrup. Sugar is sugar regardless of source. In fact a tablespoon of honey for example has more sugar and is worse for you than a tablespoon of table sugar.

At least when I was taught the food pyramid by health teachers and others when I was a young lad, I was told that drinking fruit was the same as eating fruit, and since the food pyramid had the bottom tier as "breads and cereals" and the second tier as "vegetables and fruits," I remember being told we were supposed to eat / drink a lot of fruit.

The problem with sugary drinks are that they are full of sugar!

Seriously, though, adding pure glucose (which is what fructose is after one molecular transition), without a glycogen intermediary, is poison designed to make you fat:

"Fructose is metabolized primarily in your liver. Fructose can be used to make glucose through gluconeogenesis, or it can be used to produce energy through glycolysis. However, in contrast to glucose, fructose enters glycolysis at a step that bypasses the regulatory control exerted by phosphofructokinase. This allows unimpeded conversion of excess fructose into cholesterol and triglycerides that can raise your blood lipid levels and increase body fat."

That's the rub of it, isn't it?

Like in theory, I want to live until I'm in my 90's.

But then I meet people in their 90's, and... yikes, I'm not sure that the quality of life (generalizing here) is anything to look forward to.

Mostly, their spouses are dead, their memories are failing, their families visit occasionally, they usually have to either live in a nursing home or be a burden on their retirement age kids, have all kinds of health and mobility-related issues... It doesn't look fun.

That being said, my brother in laws grandfather is 94 or so, still goes for walks every day, really fun guy, has a lot of friends, still mentally 100% there... so it's not universal.

(first time I went to the hospital, 2nd time I stayed home and suffer, since the hospital didn't do anything except say "here lay in bed and drink water till it passes, yeah that might take a couple days".

So, I did a lot of research and found there's quite a link between HFCS and kidney stones. Not for everybody, but if you're genetically susceptible to developing stones, then HFCS is like a 10X multiplier on that tendency. So, I cut them out of my diet, and it wasn't that hard - I don't need to drink sodas, there's other things I like just as well, same for any other products loaded up with HFCS. It's been about 12 years since I mostly cut it out of my diet (i'll have one soda every once in a while) and not a single kidney stone since I did it.

250 IDK, Alex. But I know when I eradicated all sugars (less than 11g a day) from my diet, as well as grains and starches which easily metabolize into sugar, all my health numbers corrected to perfect, I dropped 80 lbs, all my aches and pains and stomach issues disappeared and I feel 30 years younger. Also, no more jittery feelings and real hunger shows up but not the other "sick" feeling hunger. I also need less sleep, have no headaches, concentrate better and look hot in white jeans.

So I'm a believer because it made SUCH a huge difference in my life, mostly in how I feel and the energy I have. I'd tried before but didn't know that it wasn't calories in/calories out but more about insulin dumps which is the driver of obesity.

265 Still, the American government declared a War on Eggs and Meat based on much, much weaker survey-style studies.

This is what is so frustrating. Government policy being dictated by crap studies or isolated events. Most recent example: its now a regulation that ice cream tubs MUST have that protective plastic seal around them now because two people molested ice cream. In the history of ice cream, two people, over centuries. And now its gotta be a federal law??? This is why stuff costs so damned much.

266 I will say this, the intermittent fasting stuff makes me laugh like a loon. Why? Because I don't eat breakfast and haven't since I was about 13 or 14.

It is my normal routine to go without eating from say 7 or 8 at night until 12:30 p.m. or 1 p.m. the next day. That's every day. That's routinely 14-16 hours between one meal and the next and say a 7 to 8 hour window where I eat.

I'm fat as all get out.

Yeah, intermittent fasting is not some cure all. Mind you, I have the eating habits of an unsupervised six year old at a birthday party so that's the primary thing. But this whole oh intermittent fast! The pounds will fall off no matter what you do! Hahahahahahahahahaha no.

Now what would be interesting is seeing what would happen if I went to eating three meals a day at set times. In other words, is it the metabolism disruption of the intermittent fasting that is key. So since my store bought metabolism is set for that gap, would disrupting that have the same effect on me?

*shoves cookies into maw*

It's a mystery.

331 Raising you blood sugar causes an insulin dump which stores fat. So the less often you raise your blood sugar the better. However, if you spike it WAY up when you do eat twice or once a day, you body still has to dump enough insulin to bring it down. Intermittant fasting doesn't always do anything, depending on what you eat.

For example, I only eat "no spike" foods for breakfast, so not eating then doesn't change anything for me. Eating eggs either at 6 am or 12pm doesn't cause me to release more insulin. If you eat grains, starches, and sugar after not having eaten for 16 hours, you're going to get a giant insulin dump, low blood sugar 3-4 hours later and increased hunger. I don't know that skipping a meal or a meal and snacks then does anything, but is probably better than continuously spiking blood sugar.

Agree completely - they've gone all the way into sad joke territory. The only reason they're issuing these is because THEY HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO. They went "all-in" on anti Trump, they have no legislative plans for anything, they have never even bothered thinking about coming up with any actual "plans" to do anything worthwhile. They could adjourn now until the 2020 elections, and it wouldn't make any difference to anyone. AND THEY KNOW IT.

So that's why they have to invent crazy shit to make it look like they're doing something, even though it's guaranteed to have zero real world results. Look what's guaranteed to happen with every one of these subpoenas - there will be sparring on what can be asked, or whether exec privilege applies, in the end some agreement limiting testimony will be worked out, the witness will show and sit stiffly for 3 or 4 hours while giving formulaic answers vetted by lawyers for 3 or 4 hours, and no one will watch, no one will care, no one will remember, and that will be that.

and that's the Congressional Dem's game plan for Winning the 2020 Elections!!! Brilliant, guys, just brilliant.

351 Raising you blood sugar causes an insulin dump which stores fat. So the less often you raise your blood sugar the better. However, if you spike it WAY up when you do eat twice or once a day, you body still has to dump enough insulin to bring it down. Intermittant fasting doesn't always do anything, depending on what you eat.

Further, if your body has a period without food, it triggers your system to store more fat when you get food, in case that happens again. Fasting is training your body to pack on fat.

353 Cancer loves it the sugar.

It feeds off of sugar.

I personally know someone, a long time close friend, who had started getting massive headaches, went to the docs and was told he had stage 4 brain cancer. The regular docs basically said he was effed, go live out your final days.

A naturalistic medicine doctor who he knew for years met with him. After some tests that qualified him a certain treatment could work, that radically changing his diet that eliminated sugars and starches from his diet. That stuff turns to glucose, which the cancer feeds on.

He also ate foods that flooded his system with lactose, which essentially clogged the cancer cells from passing their waste, and the cancer died. It was pretty weird stuff, a bunch of green stuff that horses usually eat, some blueberries, and other stuff. It went into a blender and he had to drink it 4 times a day. It was pretty knarley. The purpose was to flood his system with lactose, to clog the cancer cells from functioning properly.

If you ever saw Star Trek's Trouble with Tribbles, they essentially died because their systems got clogged. That is what happened to my buddy.

He was originally given less than a year to live, that was about 15 years ago. It all happened in about a year. He went to the original cancer doc that told him he was finished and got another MRI, the 4 malignant tumors were gone. Completely eliminated. My buddy is doing fine. I saw a text from him a couple of days ago.

Obviously that was one person, one case. But the effective method, essentially filling the cancer cells with inert media so they can't crap and they die, was amazing to me.

See, again, actual science.

That's why I get so mad about the replicability and fraud issues, especially when it's hard science and REALLY REALLY MAD when it's about oncology.

It is important to study and know so that we can develop new treatments. I want to know that, say, what would help my dad with his Parkinson's. I need to be able to trust the studies were done as best people can at that time. I don't have the knowledge to judge independently.

And all the fakery? Means I can't. Remember, the anti-vaxx stuff started because "Study shows".

I think the source of this rubbish is much more prosaic than that.

It's threefold:

1. Medical students (I understand) sometimes have to do a semester of "research." Now a semester is hardly time enough to learn how to do research, much less to do any. So they crank out some plausible rubbish, so they have something to show, and then move on.

2. Scam artists write poxy books with clickbait-style titles, and festoon departure lounges with them, and appear on talk shows to push them. They know their books are rubbish, but don't care.

3. Government wankers need to justify their jobs, and pick up on something in categories #1 or 2, and make it government policy so they look like they're doing something, too. Calling bullshit on #1 or 2 would get them in a firestorm, but promulgating them makes their life easy, and pleases especially category #2.

That's my take.

Nobody overweight is going to lose weight without at least some discomfort.

Intermittent Fasting is a great way to lose weight, because the body only burns fat after it has exhausted the glucose in the liver and muscles, and bloodstream.

Figure out what your basal metabolic rate is. For men it's around 1800 calories. This is the number of calories required just to stay alive.

If someone Intermittent Fasts and reduces calories to somewhere around the basal metabolic rate, they will lose weight.

It gives the body a metabolic workout, as it is forced to derive the glucose and calories needed to sustain itself from body fat, instead of carbs. Insulin resistance is nasty stuff, it is not healthy.

Think about it. Why would an obese person ever get hungry? Doesn't that sound strange on the face of it?

396 Been off the sugar and starch train for 3 years. I feel like shit when I eat them. I can handle greens in small amounts. I have way more energy and have several reserve tanks to dip into when fasted cardio and fasted early morning training. I've tried taking in whey and heavy cream before cardio and afternoon training, and it's not there.

Ketones are being sold for 40 bucks a serving btw.

Nah. And no one follows the evidence all the time. It's human nature to whiff occasionally.

The job of a research director is beat out of graduate students as much irrationality as possible, at least in the student's research. And it takes years to do it. That's why I laugh at someone trying to do research for a semester.

407 >Further, if your body has a period without food, it triggers your system to store more fat when you get food, in case that happens again. Fasting is training your body to pack on fat.

News flash. That's bullshit. It's so simplified as to what actually happens it's harmful.

408 Truth of Life: Any study that affirms anything Michelle Obama thinks, must, by necessity, be false.

Sugar tastes good for a reason. Ignorance tastes bad. Exspurts desperately want sugar to be bad for us, but everyone knows it's not and will always keep eating as much as they can tolerate.

Those who have lost their ability to metabolize sugar want to spoil the fun for everyone who can still eat it. The high achievers, the beauties, the children, the happy and thin. Envy makes them hate sugar.

Sugar is the fuel we are meant to use. It is what get's stored in the liver and muscles for quick on demand fuel. Paleo low carb bullshit causes high stress, it is an emergency backup plan for times of famine. Low carb raises stress hormones. Low carb tells your brain it's famine time, and brain adjusts hormones accordingly. Why else would you refuse to eat sugar when it tastes so good? Because Michelle Obama, Megin Rapinoe, Pewdiepie and Dr Oz say so. In high stress famine mode, cancer, diabetes, depression, weakness and boredom become possible as the body performs the tricks it knows to stay alive through the worst that nature has to offer.

Except Publix is open 24 hours and has 2 tons of ice cream on the shelf right now. Yes right now! Brownies and cheery coke are waiting for you right now. There is no famine. You're being swindled. You're being herded like thegood cattle you want to be. Go get that purple pill, go get that Viagra, go get that heart surgery. Good, good, you're so obedient.

After 30 years in stress mode, doing what the exactly health nazis told me to do and getting sicker and sicker I realized they wee all wrong and the famine they advocate was actually the cause of my ill health. Now I eat as much sugar and saturated fat as I can and my health has improved dramatically because I am taking in energy, not living in famine mode. My weight has dropped because the famine is over and I don't need to horde anymore, my energy and mood have gone up because I have energy to spend, walking around energy.I have the energy to care about myself and others and to reach out and do something worthwhile and fun.

Don't knock sugar just because you are ignorant about biology and want to sound smart because some commie "sugar-kills" scientist was paid by govt grant to say something untrue to push their agenda. Govt grants recommended by pharma who wants you to be sick on famine. Eat what you crave. Your body knows best. CocaCola forever!

Humans runs on calories, not nutrients. Eat!

410 365 Obviously that was one person, one case. But the effective method, essentially filling the cancer cells with inert media so they can't crap and they die, was amazing to me.

Does he still avoid starches and have to drink that gross concoction every day?
Posted by: JoeF. at July 11, 2019 02:00 PM (NFEMn)

Drinking the concoction ended after the MRI showed the tumors dead.

He eats meat and fish, and some vegetables, no fruits or starches. He does love Italian, and can't eat most of it. No noodles, no breads. A fast food burger is in lettuce, not a bun.

He used to drink decades ago, but quit. So no problem there.

411 An essential book on the "settled science" of the low fat, high carbohydrate diet enforced by the U.S. government from the 1960s is The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz, published in 2015. She explains how this diet came into existence and how scientists who wanted to test its validity were prevented from being funded.

The comment by Rich is confused. The optimum diet does not have no sugars. It has them in the form of complex carbohydrates, such as starches. It is necessary to have them in your diet but not plain sugars.

And the current normal diet allows for a reasonable amount of fat compared to the low fat diet. It does not require no carbohydrates, just not an amount that causes obesity and diabetes.

413 I kinda suspect this is backwards - the people who drink a lot of fruit juice, eat a lot of fruits rather than drink soda, beer, what have you - they'll live longer (though by abstaining from bourbon, truly is it worth it?). They won't have heart attacks, they won't have diabetes, they won't die from net neutrality, but something's gotta kill em [citation needed], and natural cell cycle failure leading to cancer is right there.

So yeah I'm calling "conflating causation and correlation" with this one

Michelle doesn't think sugar is harmful for you. She thinks processed foods are harmful. The health nazi agenda is to get you to stop eating meat and switch to natural sugars as the latter is better for Gaia. Michelle pushed sugary fruits and high carb foods and other "healthy" options that corresponds almost exactly to what you want minus a energy wasting processing middle man.

Keep doing what they want. Eat those high density easy burn calories that make Gaia sing in multiple meals a day hat have been government recommended for 80 years. Pretend you're the rebel.

415 Post as much as you like on this topic, Ace. This needs to get out.
It's quite germane to the blog in general because this whole ball got rolling because Dr Ancel Keynes' pet theory (saturated fat causes heart disease) got adopted by the AHA and the FDA. Our current obesity/diabetes epidemic it a direct consequence of that steaming pile of BS.

421 "113 The study makes sense. The Warburg effect has been know for decades. Cancer loves sugar and hates fasting.
Posted by: James OBrien MD at July 11, 2019 01:29 PM (/r3rr)"

Precisely. One school of thought holds that the Warburg effect (cancer cells tend to prefer to metabolize glucose anaerobically) allows for intermediates in glycolysis (conversion of glucose to pyruvate, and then anaerobically converting pyruvate to lactate) to be shunted off into biosynthetic pathways that the tumor cells require to survive.

Under aerobic conditions, glucose tends to be converted to CO2 and H2O. Under anaerobic conditions, the lactate/pyruvate doesn't go on to become CO2 and H2O, instead it can go back "up" the pathway of glycolysis (a pathway known as gluconeogenesis). This effectively "traps" the glucose in the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis system, from which intermediates may be siphoned off for other uses.
