Awesome crew!!! They look like they have been in this position before. Do you spell the word R-I-D-E? Thanks for submitting their photo and story.

This is Max. Seven months old, around 50 pounds, allegedly
Lab/Newfoundland mix (who knows but he does have webbed feets and the
fur looks kinda Newfie, so maybe). He's already right at home as a
bright, mild-mannered sweetie. - D

He certainly looks like a big sweetie!! Good luck with raising him into an adult dog. Thanks for sharing.

nyla.jpg

This is Nyla, who just passed away due to cancer. She was an extraordinary spirit. As a puppy she had been abandoned in the forest, and survived the first year of her life hunting her own dinner. When she came to live with us here in the Sierra Nevadas she was quite the wild child. Over the course of the twelve years that we were together we ran and hiked enough miles to cross the country and back. Nyla is Gaelic for “Champion”, and that she was, quite the champion in our hearts. - Jake

An incredible story and a lot of luck on Nyla's side to end up with you safe and sound. Sorry about your loss. She was a magnificent creature.

Hello everyone! This is Savannah, also known as Savvy. She is a 13-year-old Shiba Inu and is quite the diva. Yes, Savvy is quite spoiled [can’t possibly imagine how she got that way]. She’s also quite the Diva. She has me wrapped around her little paw and I love her to death. I also love the pet thread ... never miss it. And love my fellow morons too! — Roxy Doxy, mostly a lurker and sometimes a commenter.

Spoiled? We don't think so. She appears to be malnourished and totally neglected. J/K she sounds like the love of your life. And cute to boot. Thanks for sharing and your love for the pet thread.

Dutch Jumping.jpg

Her Majesty and the great Dutch (BISS GCh.-G Soyara's The Flying Dutchman) at a show. The perspective is correct; he was that big.

Dutch was almost everything you'd want in a Borzoi: a beautiful head, a front assembly you just don't see nowadays, effortless movement, a stallion attitude. He just lacked that last bit of self-confidence that made his aunt Lacey such a great show dog. Even so, he was the #1 Borzoi in 2014 and the #1 Owner-Handled Borzoi three years in a row. With his brother Ilya, he made a fantastic brace. - Hadrian the Seventh

You don't see Borzois that often in my part of the world. A beautiful animal and a lot of work to be that successful. Not sure how you guys put up with the politics of the show world. Congrats on a successful line.

17 About never having a clean house or be able to use the bathroom alone-- cats like to keep their humans company too. It's not just a dog thing.

Although pets in the bathroom does remind me of an interesting incident that happened the last time I had to take one of my cats to the animal hospital at night (when else?!!!). While we were waiting for the vet, a young married couple came in with a dog that had evidently eaten the wife's underpants while she was in the shower. An x-ray verified that the dog had indeed eaten the underoos, and the vet had to figure out a way to get the dog to bring them back up partway and then use forceps to get them out the rest of the way. I have to say I was glad that a cat's mouth is too small to take in items of human clothing, although I suppose cats can drag things around the floor for entertainment.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 13, 2019 03:10 PM (ycWCI)

I did a fair bit of research on Shiba Inus so I will attempt to answer for Roxy Doxy.

I believe they are generally quiet, and quite independent. I see them described as cat like. They look very much like a small version of the Akita. And Akitas are known for being dominant dogs. I'm not sure, but Shibas may be inclined toward being dominant as well.
I also think they're very loyal. If you do something to upset a Shiba they scream.

Vanya used to transport socks - only socks - from the hamper by the shower, downstairs. Then he would deposit them, one at a time, next to the couch, meyowl a plaintive Song Of His People to no one in particular about the gross injustice of the world, and then go upstairs and repeat the whole process.

If I had another cat that would collect socks to bring them upstairs and put them in the hamper it would be like living inside an Escher lithograph.

They're not big but I think so. Generations ago I think the Japanese used them as hunting dogs--small animals of course.
And given their loyal nature they probably don't run.

One of the things I like about Shiba Inus and their big brothers the Akita is the fact they are not designer dogs, the breeds have been around for a long time.

My first cat (Princess) had several wool mice in different colors that she would carry into the kitchen in the evening and arrange them beside the water bowl. I asked the vet why she did it, and he said it might be that she thought of them as the kittens she never had.

Maintaining a collection is something my dude cat does, too. Only it's catnip toys that he carries from one room to another and arranges them in some pattern that makes sense only to him. He reserves the Song of His People for dinnertime.

This is interesting. How old was she when you noticed the onset of fear? Can you make any sense of it based on association (was she around another dog who was fearful?) or any other cause?

I have studied this issue a bit. It is at least partly a genetic predisposition, but not exclusively. That is, we can test puppies for it at 7 weeks, as we can test them for a number of genetic predispositions and future behaviors. But this is not the final word, as dogs can and do change. Puppy testing is imperfect.

One of my dogs (which I adopted at 9 mos. old) had no fear of thunder, but did gradually develop a sensitivity to it by association with my older GSD, who was very afraid. When the older dog died, the fear morphed into barking at thunder.

We have a large wet-dry vac out in the kennel to try to keep up with the drifts of hair and dust that fall off our guys coats. When we go into the pens to vacuum, no one seems to mind it much; they're more concerned with staying out of the way.

Same thing with the carpet washer we use when the pens get scrubbed down: the dogs in the next pen over don't even turn a hair while it's running.

76 This is interesting.

Well she was about a year and a half old when we adopted her and she's a rescue so we don't know anything really about her past. She had a lot of aggressive tendencies at first but we've worked out most of those by just being nice to her. Anyhow, I'd guess it was at least a year later that I noticed she was afraid of storms and I suspect it may have started with the sound of fireworks which always seemed to scare her.

86 I want all the dogs --

Old Cat is worrying me because he is so clingy right now. Last time he got obnoxious about it was when I had pneumonia. I'm gonna die.

Old Dog continues his monitoring of the nonsense in my house with two toddlers every day. New Old Dog has taken up the slack and plays with the Terrible Goddess of the Dogs so Old Dog doesn't have to move much.

Kidlet spent half an hour this am prying dessicated fruit snacks from the back foot of New Old Dog. Old Dog eats them when gifted by the Terrible Goddess, but New Old Dog is afraid of fruit snacks, candy, chocolate, and donuts and spits them out politely after the attention has shifted.

When I visited my old Italian girlfriend in Rome last year I left a shirt and sweater on the kitchen table. While we were out her dog completely ate them and tore them up.

A lot of this has to do with the dog's first six months and how it is socialized to the world. As you say, your dog being a rescue, you don't know its past. If we know a dog has a sensitivity, we can do some things to counter-condition it. It can be a real challenge.

It's transmitted through biting or mother to kitten. He has killed a mouse, so I'm hoping for some benefit once it starts getting cold.

That is a good deed you're doing, as a lot of people are afraid of FIV+ cats. Actually, as long as your new kitty is neutered, he's not likely to transmit FIV to a cat that doesn't have it. But it's a real kindness to adopt another FIV+ cat who otherwise might never find a home. Best wishes!

He has started a new thing this summer I'd never seen him do before. He'll act like he needs to go out, by sitting at the door, then when he gets outside on a hot sunny day, he simply lies down in the full sun and starts soaking up the sun. National Geographic called me and asked me to write the feminist facts about how The Lion King gets lion pride dynamics all wrong. I happily complied. Lions are matrilineal!!

Damn sexist CGI lions!

161 I think as long as the Pet Thread remains, we shall always have at least one Bronco Bama dogeater sock per thread.

162 Paisley just came over to survey my desk top. She's looking for used kleenexes, which seem to be her favourite snack.

164 >>I kind of wonder if it is all in how their owners react? I love thunder storms and he does not pay a bit of attention to them, fireworks either.

Not in my experience. I like thunder and lightening. My last Golden was absolutely terrified.

A few years ago I was watching the Stanley Cup playoffs and a big thunder storm came through. He bolted upstairs to hide as usual. It was the last few minutes of a tight game so I decided to watch and then go check on him.

I heard some banging around but I assumed he was trying to find a hiding spot under the bed. When the game was over I went to check on him and he met me at the top of the stairs. He was soaking wet.

I went into the bathroom and found that he had tried to hide in the bathtub and accidentally turned on the water and stepped on the drain cover and closed it. The water was just beginning to spill over the top when I shut it off.

That could have been costly.

166 We caught a blue-tailed skink this morning. It was in the house. So, kind-of like a pet, huh?
Posted by: mindful webworker - click for vids blog at July 13, 2019 04:49 PM (LtSaI)

I see them every once in awhile peeking at me from behind a wall or around a shrub here and there and they always take me by surprise with that stare they give you.

They aren't afraid of anything either and will bow up on you when you try and catch them. Big, fat things must be eating good.

174 May be related to the gentleman with the dog train. East Texas, and one of my ancestors was Sion R. Bostick, who was in on the capture of Santa Ana.

99 Happydude -- when you see the dog train guy, could you ask if he's related to Sion R. Bostick? If so, my sisters would love to know it, especially my middle sister -- she's an even worse sucker for animals than I am!

177 Lurking Grandma -- sounds like you and the young mouser are going to make a great pair. And yeah, he'll keep mousing even if he's well fed. Sheesh, since we moved to Texas where we have no mice, my Ghost has taken to chasing and killing any bugs in the house! At least he doesn't leave their dismembered bodies around.

178 Trixie is not well.
She's blind in one eye, and that eye is weeping and seeping.
Fortunately we have one of THE premier vet hospitals in the world near us, Univ. of Pennsylvania Veterinarians Hospital. We have made an appointment for our sweet girl.

She's 14 YO now, and I have to help her up the steps every night. But goodness, both my wife and I love her so much.....

Don't ask ME how it happened.

Hmmm...just thought.

Is she a German Corgi?
