The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Commentary Magazine was one of the conservative bulwarks against creeping communism, and was a steadfast opponent of the Soviet Union. It also published excellent non-political articles and the occasional short fiction piece (almost always worth a read). It was my first exposure to the intellectual underpinnings of anti-communism, and helped to form my political philosophy. But it also was unapologetically hawkish, and was a bastion of neo-consevatism. [Full disclosure: I too was hawkish, in part because of the magazine's influence.]

And then it lost its way when the Soviet Union fell. Without a philosophical enemy, they floundered until Donald Trump came along with his unabashed love of America, his deep suspicion of foreign intervention (the military kind), and his frank and open appeal to yucky ideas like American Exceptionalism and the supremacy of the American people in all political calculations. FINALLY! An opponent they could sink their teeth into!

But distilled to its basic idea, that opponent is America. Here we have a perfect example of their tortured philosophy...a leftist company tosses some cops out of one of its stores because they are politically distasteful. Conservatives react harshly (entirely appropriately!), and both sides are wrong!

One Man's Scandal: The scandal precedes the outrage.

The cycle is a familiar one by now. The incident exploded among the people who spenr their Fourth of July perusing the Internet for outrages. Tempe’s police union complained about the officers’ treatment. Twitter erupted in indignation, both in support of and against the coffee shop, and the story migrated up the chain from social media and onto cable news. It surely won’t be long before America’s political class is compelled to have an opinion on the matter. The question is: Why?

It is easily stipulated that it was unreasonable for one oversensitive Starbucks customer to be offended by the presence of peace officers, as it was for the accommodating barista to dismiss them from the premises. But who is to say what fate would have held in store if the hapless employee of a notoriously socially progressive brand had not erred on the side of controversy? This incident was a product of a political environment that encourages oversensitivity.

This is an extension of the arrant nonsense of impartiality and bipartisanship that has landed us in the current state of affairs with the border, the social compact (beating up right-of-center journalists is cool!), and political choices that put America first.

The reaction to a ridiculous violation of basic good behavior and the ideals of the American people (rule of law, fairness, politeness, acceptance) is not the same thing as the original violation, and anyone who didn't grow up on the Upper West Side, suckling at the breast of socialism and distrust of most Americans should be able to see that without expending much intellectual energy.

Or the short answer: Hey Commentary! Lol...GF.

135 The reaction to a ridiculous violation of basic good behavior and the
ideals of the American people (rule of law, fairness, politeness,
acceptance) is not the same thing as the original violation, and anyone
who didn't grow up on the Upper West Side, suckling at the breast of
socialism and distrust of most Americans should be able to see that
without expending much intellectual energy.

The original violation is the natural result of the complete and total lack of respect for anyone and anything. While a certain amount of that is fairly common among kids, growing out of it is one of the marks of maturity.

Unfortunately, the movers and shakers in our society look down upon the notion of respect and want to keep everyone from becoming mature adults who are capable of seeing truth. The funny thing about that is that they expect us to respect them, hence their elitist attitudes.

It would be nice if we could restore the idea of respect back into society.

They knew even if Trump was not destroyed, they would have established the false dichotomy (?) ... the moral equivalence ... that sure maybe Hilda sold our uranium and hypersonic tech to Russia, but Trump is an actual spy for Putin. Sure Clintons were on Epstein Island, but Trump rapes women all the time.

And now the outrage meter and the NPC drones are being activated at every level, to invoke some mass hysteria ... with the claim ... Trump is creating hate everywhere ... when no, it is the left going hysterical with the hate, as has always been the case since Orwell exposed it, or since Cain killed Abel maybe. But the left has learned to used multiple cutouts to do the killing.

"wiped it, like with a cloth?" ... no, whatever Hilda missed, Weissmann was there to clean up. Except for the blue dress ... always save the blue dress evidence.

213 I've got a theory about people like this.

I think that some people just like to argue, and that these types of people frequently believe that their ability to make an argument for a position is proof that it's the correct position.

These people tend to be contrarians and like to think that they're smarter than other people as well.

These people are easily mistaken because they passionately speak out about topics that we hold dear, but they don't actually have any deeply held convictions at all. The only conviction that they have is that they're right.

It's usually the case that they end up arguing for an intellectually consistent set of propositions, because that's obviously easier to defend in an argument, but sometimes, because they become convinced of something for another reason, an emotional reason, and they then will argue this emotional position with the same rigor that they use for everything else. Because they have to be right, and God forbid they actually do some soul searching and admit that their initial gut reaction was incorrect.

So that's what's the case with the Cuckshed et al. We thought they were conservatives, but it turns out they were just contrarians.

215 President Donald Trump cannot block critics whose views he dislikes from following his Twitter account, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

In a 3-0 decision, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said the U.S. Constitutions First Amendment forbids Trump from using Twitters blocking function to limit access to his account, which is otherwise open to the public.

The First Amendment does not permit a public official who utilizes a social media account for all manner of official purposes to exclude persons from an otherwise-open online dialogue because they expressed views with which the official disagrees, Circuit Judge Barrington Parker wrote.

Yes. There are only so many different codes manufacturers use. You can buy a generic programmable remote. All you need to know is the brand of tv.

I don't think phones are made with them anymore. :-(

242 They'd obviously like to do that again to Trump, but Republican voters won't fall for that particular trick this time.

maybe not, but the "reagan dem" types that helped PDJT win narrowly in 2016 would!

so I do fear this type of ploy being used again, but not sure who would work. would have to be a media icon/actor maybe? there is no one left who is a believable conservative moderate any longer (in politics).

maybe condi? eh ..no

Not just them, but our whole society - without the existential threat of the USSR and its excesses as a daily reminder of the dangers of socialism, scaring the shit out of everyday Americans, our own fifth column has been able to move the ball astoundingly fast. And because of globalist cash and influence, the cuck right has provided no resistance.

I remember being shocked when Putin called the collapse of the Soviet Union the "greatest geopolitical disaster of the twentieth century."

Now, I find myself in agreement (though for completely, categorically different reasons).

Without the loss in 1992, and the ensuing years when Perot was often vindicated by reality (for example, "that giant sucking sound!"), Trump had traction in 2015 going forward.

In a lot of ways, if Goldwater hadn't gone out and run as a conservative in 1964, Reagan would never have been elected in 1980. Reagan really got a national audience with Goldwater running in 64. His famous "A Time for Choosing" is still on You tube, from 1964.

the whole "magic dirt" thing ... that our heritage can't be induced into third worlders just by importing them ... is true. BUT it is also not magically induced into our own kids, unless we teach them well. And it CAN be taught to foreigners, but they have to be immersed into American culture, the OriginalCoke version, not the fake new age crap.

So we live on the residue of our 50's era social values (not counting some Jim Crow dem crap) ... but the leftist infiltration is killing key elements ... family and Christianity (and Judaism) being key targets. But from the "right" we have the globalists also contributing to destruction of our values, with the free trade enrichment of China, where oligarchs escaped all our values (against slaves, pollution, tyranny) and enriched themselves while defiling the middle class (in more ways than economic, as we see with the Epstein crowd)

So the parties flipped. So the democrats are republicans now?
Posted by: rickb223 at July 09, 2019 11:45 AM (ATv6t)

=========

It's confusing a couple of different things while ignoring some history (and waving common sense).

The South went from blue to red? Must be a party switch.

Well, except for the fact that one generation of southerns kept voting Democrat (long enough to keep Kentucky blue at the state level until a few years ago), and a new generation came along to vote Republican. That new generation grew up in a world without Jim Crow.

The Civil Rights Act vote is where the switch supposedly happened. The party members were so incensed that they literally crossed the aisle (I had a college professor tell me that exactly...she wasn't a bright person).

Then there's Strom Thurmond. The Dixiecrats were a group of Democrats who split off from the Democratic party to start the Dixiecrat party. When the latter party fell apart, every single Dixiecrat became a Democrat again, except Strom Thurmond. Strom was a Republican because he hated communism more than he hated darkies, apparently. Strom is exhibit 1 (there are no other exhibits) in evidence.

And then, common sense: Modern Democrats don't love Calvin Coolidge. Modern Republicans don't love Woodrow Wilson or FDR.

You have to actively think against logic to come to the conclusion that the parties switched sides in the 60s.

The logic is so tortured. I feel my IQ points draining out. What is the rationale here? In what way is this a first amendment issue? Everyone has a right to speak and say just about anything they want. Everyone has a right to freely associate. No one has the right to be heard and no one has the right to associate with someone who does not want to associate with him. There is of course the right to petition the government for redress of grievances - but that is petitioning the government not a person specifically. By this logic, Trump should take all phone calls from concerned citizens - as should every member of congress, every bureaucrat, every judge.

Yes, this will make inadvertent trouble for Twitter but this is about the judiciary illegally restraining the executive with insane illogic. Trump should immediately appeal and refuse to comply with the order. If Twitter disallows his blocks and does not disallow blocks for *every other* government official, Trump should sue them.

Go brass-knuckles on it.

For Russia, it was chaos.

But America can't exist without a purpose, and with the Soviet Empire gone, we really need to reinvent ourselves. I think the explosion of identity politics may be related to our national existential crisis.

To answer the question, and find a new purpose, we need to look back to original intent, to be open to trade while eschewing foreign entanglement, placing ourselves as a nation that revolves around commerce and industry, not playing political games or empire building.

Sadly, the out of touch COC / WSJ / Globalist / Eastern Establishment, call it what you will, is NOT new. And there was discontent with them back then too.

A President Perot would NOT have open borders, nor be goo-goo for globalism.

Unfortunately, he was not ready for prime time. I remember when he earnestly went to the NAA(CC)CP and was booed ostensibly for a "you people" gaffe, but really because he was not giving them the usual welfare victim dividends they were demanding.
