22 Rickie Lee Jones new covers album "Kicks" is very good and lots of fun.

Some interesting and unexpected song choices. Plus, excellent back-up playing behind the vocals.

Enjoying it a lot.

As an aside, I'm not really a fan of RLJ's original music but I always pick up her covers albums.

Her taste in songs is excellent and the production and instrumentation always shines.

Check it out.

40 >>>15 Oooh. Somebody please willow the posts Ace snapped at someone.

it was in the Gainzz post, of course. Always controversial.

So, one of my pet peeves is when people who don't have any weight problems say, "Hey, just do what I do, eat sensibly and exercise."

Which is not advice. That advice 1, doesn't work, and 2, has been said ten billion times, including by Michelle Obama. If it worked, then... see, it would work, and people wouldn't try other solutions.

Anyway, to me, that's just a backhanded way of giving oneself a compliment. It's not advice, it's a brag, and a passive-aggressive one. I'd prefer the straight up, "Hey, I was born lucky, never really gained more than five pounds from my standard weight."

Instead, it's always, "JUST do what I do." That "just" annoys me, as if it's easy. If it's easy, I wouldn't have to go without food for 27 1/2 days.

Again, this is just people patting themselves on the back and passive-aggressively accusing other people of being gluttonous and lazy.

So I this guy had offered this advice about what he does when he gains "a couple of pounds," and I said, "Well, someone who only has to lose a couple of pounds is what we'd call normal weight. What's your advice for someone who is 40 pounds overweight?"

And Broseidon took offense to that, and he'd been kind of pissy about the whole thread anyway, and then Broseidon and I had a good old-fashioned race riot, except not with any other races.

Re: HIV/AIDS

I looked at the dot gov numbers of annual new infections and it's heartbreaking:

"The estimated number of new adult/adolescent AIDS cases diagnosed in the United States was 60,805 in 1996, 49,646 in 1997, 42,832 in 1998, 41,165 in 1999, 40,766 in 2000, and 41,311 in 2001"

https://bit.ly/2NiF9tV

The crazy part is seeing what the annual new HIV infection numbers have been since then. Here's a dot gov hint:

"In 2017, 38,739 people received an HIV diagnosis in the U.S. The annual number of new HIV diagnoses remained stable between 2012 and 2016 in the U.S. and dependent areas"

https://bit.ly/2u93g32

It's hovered around 40K new cases every year since.

I remember a story from back in the days of the Shah.

American tourist is Iran, so naturally goes to check out the Street of the Rug Makers.

Sees the weavers (knotters, whatever) taking beautiful, brand-new hand-made carpets and putting them out in the street for traffic to run over them.

"What in the hell are you doing?"
"We don't get it either, but the Westerners pay a lot more money for them this way."

152 A point about today's Rape accusations - and all of this came up with the Kavanaugh situation, so it's just a sad rehash of the whole affair, but the key to knowing it's garbage is when she says "sometime in 1995 or 96". The fact that she won't, more likely can't, pick an exact date automatically disqualifies the entire accusation, just like when Christine Ford wouldn't say when Kavanaugh supposedly attacked her.

Here's why - one of the most fundamental and oldest defenses of anyone who's been accused of a crime is the opportunity to produce an alibi, someone who can swear that the accused couldn't have been present at the time of the alleged crime. This far predates our own legal system, and is known in every culture. It's an issue of fundamental fairness that all societies accept.

so when an accuser refuses to state an exact date and time, she automatically negates any chance the accused has of producing an alibi for the time of the attack. Is Trump supposed to now produce minute by minute logs of every step he took, every person he saw for an unspecified period 25 years ago? Could you? So from that angle alone, without even taking anything else into consideration, it is a bogus, unfair, and worthless accusation, designed simply for max political damage. I've already seen some cucks saying "well it should be investigated." Hello? Remember Kavanaugh? If you don't have a specific date, any "investigation" is over before it starts. The first question is always "when did this happen, exactly?" and if the answer is "i dunno, sometime a few years ago I guess" then that's the last question asked.

another point as to just what a shitty accusation, the accuser said "well he probably was on the security tapes of the store, but I called them and they don't have them anymore." Oh, after 25 YEARS OF YOU SAYING NOTHING, you're surprised they got rid of old security cam footage? God, it's hard to not blow a gasket at what a stupid and malicious accusation this one is.

But unlike Japan in 1941, Iran has no serious offensive military potential including perhaps the world's best navy, nor are they already occupying a yuuuuge chunk of their region [pre-Pearl Harbor Japan was in Manchuria since '31, lots of populous western/coastal China since '37, and what is now Vietnam, plus half of sakhalin island and all the Pacific trust territories].

And Iran has been at war with us and many allies for forty years, a boring fact I'll keep repeating even though facts are boring and bumper sticker crap is more popular.

Mexico says National Guard deployment is completeMexico has completed its deployment of 6,000 National Guard agents to
help control the flow of migrants headed toward the U.S. and filled 650
immigration agency posts to regulate border crossings, the government said Friday.

At a checkpoint on the outskirts of Tapachula on Friday, more than 20
migrants from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh were detained.

Last weekend, authorities found nearly 800 migrants inside four
semi-trailers traveling through the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.
Officials have said they want to focus efforts on disrupting migrant
smuggling operations.

Since January, Mexico has
detained more than 74,000 migrants and deported over 53,000, according
to the latest figures available. That is expected to rise when June
numbers are released.

Even when I knew my lines as well as I could given the constraints, one night I did fine, and the next I would stammer and stutter and lose all my stage presence.

My main regret was my worst night was the last night. But I think the main idea was communicated. Jesus saves!

Emmie - for anyone who's ever been on stage (even in just an amateur capacity, like I have) one of the funniest episodes of any series ever is a Frasier episode where he volunteers to sing Buttons and Bells and Bows, an old Bob Hope song at a local benefit. And Niles keeps telling him he should at least practice a little bit, and throughout the show Frasier is all "Oh, I know this so well that I don't need any practice, I've sung it lots of times!!!" and it's some big gala benefit in front of a bunch of wealthy donors, and he gets up on stage and of course his mind goes completely blank because he never practiced - and he ends up mumbling "something and something and buttons and bows" while the accompaniment plays.

It's every performers worst nightmare, played hilariously!

247 Well, talking about quitting smoking, here's my story about quitting involuntarily: ...

Back in February, I felt like crap, finally went to see the doc, 8 hours later (and a 50 mile ambulance ride in the tail end of a blizzard), emergency surgery for a perforated colon, (pro tip, diverticulitis can really sneak up on you), and I wake up (YAY!) pretty much flat on my ass.

It was effing days before the concept of towing my complex IV stand down to the loading dock to sneak a cig even occurred to me, and I rejected it out of hand as largely impractical.

Let it be said, I was pretty damn ready to quit anyway; somehow after fifty years the thrill had kindasorta evaporated, but I lacked the immediate will to pull the trigger, so if the truth were known I was happy to take this opportunity to go all in.

Four months out, still good.
(yay)
Still wish for one once in a while, but not having it at hand has helped, bigly.

Can't say that I recommend this procedure, but it worked like hell-beating tanbark in my case.

Side note: hospital food has improved by orders of magnitude over the years; crikey, I have eaten (and paid for !) meals in restaurants that were not as good as what hospital room service brought up to me.

Sorry about your perforated colon. Ouch
Glad you are going better.

In the 1980's they still had a room in the hospital in which to smoke. My frail mother would grab onto her IV and wheel it down there to smoke. Then it got to be too much and she said "I'll be glad to be cremated just so I can have a good smoke."

291 >>>Wow, me too. I quit for 13 years and had a cigarette with a buddy in the bar just for the hell of it. Bang! right back to 3 packs a day.

I did that too. I had cold-quit for like two years and then a friend came by and he had cigarettes, and, well.

So anyway, that's why Allen Carr's book is good. He proposes early that there's no way that "Willpower quitting" will work, because no one has the willpower to stop himself from doing something that he wants to do.

So he says, What we'll do is make you just not want to smoke.

And that sounds stupid, and I thought it was stupid, and I thought "Oh what a piece of shit grifter with this silly 'just don't want to smoke any more'" stuff

But it works. Or it worked for me. And a lot of people.

He's right about that. As dumb as it sounds. It sounds tautological -- if you just don't want to smoke, you won't smoke and won't need willpower to not smoke -- but, as absurd as it sounds, it's true.

Or, again, it was true for me.

328 Jewell, you won't miss it....!

so I don't want to give away the central point of the book too much, but people mythologize the cigarette, what it does for them, that it helps them focus, that it makes them rebellious, all this stuff.

And the addiction to nicotine is a pretty minor addiction. Withdrawal symptoms pass after three days.

The big part of it is the mental part, the mythologizing that cigarettes are doing all these wonderful things for you.

And... well, spoiler alert, none of it's true.

He keeps asking rhetorically, like: If you say you need cigarettes now to calm you down, did you need them to calm down before you smoked?

Stuff like that. And of course you didn't.

You do inhale some..

I quit ciggies 35 years ago.. after about 5 years I took up the pipe.. you do tend to inhale some to get that nicotine rush.

Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at June 21, 2019 08:57 PM (438dO)

In general, there is no need to inhale a premium cigar because the tobacco works in different ways than cigarretes. Cigarettes, came last because they required a certain type of tobacco that could be inhaled deeply. I think it was called bright leaf or something. Anyway, some wonder why people smoke cigars but don't inhale. The reason is simple, they don't need to inhale. The big premium hand rolled cigars are made with tobaccos full of nicotine. You get enough from handling it, keeping it in your mouth, and bringing the smoke into your mouth and often out your nose.
The thing people seem to overlook for some reason is that our skin is porous. This is why that absurd urban legend about dipping tobacco and fiberglass persists. You don't inhale dip or chew either because you don't need to, it goes in the bloodstream on its own.

I am not claiming no one inhales cigars because they do. I read this history book on tobacco called "Tobacco, a cultural history of an exotic plant" years ago. What I learned is people will do all kinds of stuff with tobacco like enemas and eye drops. None of these things are Quint recommended! And sure, to the original poster, give up cigars if you are concerned. They are expensive and not healthy for sure.

One time my digestive tract was so uncomfortable that I had to stop after a day and a half.

The last time, my pulse was elevated (80 bpm) and wouldn't calm down. I was not drinking coffee. The elevated pulse continued for a few days afterward.

Do you have any insight for my situation, please?

...

I don't know what you mean by your digestive tract being "uncomfortable" so I can't advise you on that. I can say generally that GI issues are common in the early days. I get diarrhea sporadically, and then of course it's weird to just not move your bowels.

As for elevated pulse: I get that myself. Sometimes I think it's just due to being worried about whether the fast is healthy. In my experience, there's no problem at all for shorter fasts of 2 or 3 or 4 days, so you shouldn't get worried about it.

Another possibility is that your pulse is elevated because your body is pumping out extra adrenaline. That happens in a fast, because your body is trying to give you energy to get food. that part of it is normal.

My favorite part is that their biggest thread was the one in 2016 right before they switched to facebook where everyone was telling them to go f*ck themselves.

7000 comments IIRC, and I would bet a paycheck they haven't accumulated 7K since that night.

I've posted it before, but I looked during the election. They didn't break 100 (one hundred), and many of those were "my sister makes $50 an hour from home!" posts.

I tried paleo, but that only made me gain weight, for real. I do go lower in the carb dept, but not eliminate. WW really does work. I have been doing the intermittent fasting, skipping breakfast, but that is it.

There's a video somewhere with a Hilux dodging an incoming RPG somewhat accidentally... like it pulls forward a few feet to get a better view of something and the RPG hits the spot where it had been. The video is real but it's edited with the 1980s Toyota jingle and it's absolutely hilarious. Does anyone happen to have a link to that? I looked a while ago but I couldn't find it.

It sorta felt like it. I pulled up the hood on the car to check the radiator and burned my hand. It's not as bad now, but I seriously considered getting an aloe leaf from one of the plants in the back yard to smear on it. Hasn't left a mark, but hurt for a couple of hours.

Not sure where your AO is, but this all kind of lends credence to the reality that Global Wamrening is boo-shit. Currently here in CO, it is in the mid 50s, there is 6 inches of fresh snow at Rabbit Ears Pass, and Steamboat was dusted.

Weather does what weather does.

I recall being in Cody, Wyoming on the 4th of July in 1993. it was maybe upper 50s, low 60s. There was snow flying on the mountains west of town.

Weather is a capricious hell-bitch.
Period.

592 Thanks Ace for the Gainzzzz thread. If you wouldn't mind, keep it going even if you reached whatever place you want to be in. It has finally enter my cortex and I am out this w/e to start removing the 50-60 stones strapped to my gut. It's nice, really nice, to not have smoked in the last year after 50 of doing it but, what has been added to the bod is not good in any way shape or form. I'm also going to try once again your advise of 12 hrs of fasting. One has to try it and if it doesn't work...try it again later on down the road.

***for the person trying to quit smoking...piece of advise which may be very hard, but actually, it's a lot easier now a days then when I first tried to quit 40 yrs ago because you can't smoke in grocery stores, buses, hospitals, work or bars anymore, spend less time around people who do smoke, if, smokers are in and around your life. Don't worry about what they say or do. Also, I did the Nicotine patch-21 mgs. DO NOT buy the cheap version either. Get the original Nicoderm patch. I know they say they have the same amount of Nic in them but the original hits you right off the bat and the cheap version doesn't. Truth be told. I stayed on it for about 4 months. Wish for you want you want for you

Yes, the original was Faye Dunaway.
