Bloomberg Opinion: Trump Doesn't Need to Strike Iran. His Sanctions Are Already Devastating It.

I tend to think we do have to hit Iran if they attack more ships, but here's the other perspective: Iran is cracking under brutal sanctions and wants to change the circumstances in order to wheedle its way out of the sanctions.

Why give them that change? They're the ones that need a change of storyline. We don't.

What we're seeing unfold in the Persian Gulf is a confrontation between a U.S. president who doesn’t know when he's winning, and a Supreme Leader who doesn't know when he's losing. If Donald Trump changes his mind again and orders an attack on Iranian targets, he will have played into Ali Khamenei's hands.

It's too early to exhale after Trump's decision to cancel a military strike last night. If he could order the jets scrambled once -- without giving Congress or American allies much time to consult and advise -- he can do so again. The next time, he may not call it off.

But that would be to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Trump seems to have lost sight of the fact that his "maximum pressure" sanctions campaign against the Islamic Republic is working: Iran's economy is feeling great pain, and its isolation is deepening. For all of its proclamations of resistance and resilience, the regime in Tehran is plainly alarmed.

In its panic, it has started to lash out in ways that hurt its own interests, and erode the sympathy it has enjoyed in international circles since Trump pulled the U.S. out of the nuclear deal last year...

And Trump was, for once, playing his cards reasonably well. He stated his openness to negotiations and his desire to avoid war...

This is exactly the right response to Iran's provocations: To brush them off and allow the regime to damage itself in the court of world opinion, even as it is continually weakened by sanctions...

What should Trump do instead? Hold his nerve, keep his patience and let Iran dig itself into a deeper hole.

Thoughts?

Killing them softly > killing them loudly?

As long as they're being killed, I guess I'm fine with it.

Meanwhile, a short sad fat little man howls impotently.

George Conway blasted President Trump and called for him to resign from office after he walked back a planned military strike against Iran in response to the downing of a U.S. surveillance drone.

“Trump didn’t realize UNTIL TEN MINUTES BEFOREHAND that a planned airstrike would kill over a hundred people and would therefore be grossly disproportionate to the loss of a UAV?” Conway, lawyer and husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, tweeted Friday. “To say this is amateur hour would defame amateurs.”

"Resign. If you didn’t know this until it was almost too late, you’re even more of an idiot than people think you are," Conway tweeted in response to Trump. "Do the country and the world a favor. Go back to real estate, where the worst you can do is kill banks."

Dude, if you spent that kind of energy trying to repair with your wife, maybe you wouldn't be such a spazz all the time.

It would exacerbate it mightily.

Still, it's reasonable to simply watch them bleed out and literally expend no further effort.

75 with respect to the drone: the price has come up now and then, and we should admit to ourselves how every time the price of hardware comes up, the incredible corruption and outright theft in the procurement system is revealed.

I've heard $135 million, or $180 million, or whatever for the cost of those things. Well, you should know as well as I that the vehicle itself maybe costs $1 - $2 million, and the rest is the cost of the payoffs Northrup had to make to get the contract, with a nice profit margin thrown in.

It's a glorified RC controlled plane with a nice set of high efficiency turbofan engines (I think) but there's nothing novel about the powerplant. It's got a full time military satellite uplink but that's off the shelf tech now too. No defenses, no armaments, no life support, no pressurization, no eject systems, no stealth tech - this is a dune buggy of an aircraft, all stripped down. It's got some cameras and other sensory devices, but that's all off the shelf too, adapted from things like the Hawkeye.

So it is actually a pretty simple aircraft put together with off the shelf hardware. New package, but old goods. You guess how much that should cost, if you stripped out the quadruple layers of payoffs.

76 Bloooomberg even when they agree with the President can't go without belittling him. I think that some non-us flagged oil tankers and a drone are no enough to rain bombs down. We are getting close to that point. Iran needs it's nose bloodied and if they continue on they will get punched. Tick-tok. Time is running out. Trump holds all the trump cards in this.

Also - I'm not convinced Trump was serious about attacking. The leaks were too clean. I think he's rattling everyone's cage, playing Mr. Chaos for effect.

Remember, he's going to meet with the ChiComs soon.

Making them think he's looney enough to cut off 20 percent of their oil supply in fit of rage might induce them to placate him in other areas.

113 There is an obvious stupidity to this line of thought - that trump and the Ayatollahs don't KNOW what is happening.

I think Trumps feint last night was all about showing he could hit them if he wanted, and was certainly thinking hard about it. And the Iranians acting up in such a stupid and transparent way is be4cause they are rapidly running out of options - a drought and a 10 YEAR recession is pushing them to the brink.

Look, when Iran cut funds to Hezbollah 40% they are pretty fucking desperate. They hate Israel. Hezbollah is supposed to be their army to invade Israel. They've spent decades building them up for the fight. To cut their payments to them in half....a lot of those idiots may have to go find real work soon.

Iran has 12% unemployment. -6% growth. 40% inflation.

Worse is the baby bust - Iran is producing far to few children to sustain itself. 1.66. below replacement rates. hell, freaking Syria is at 2.9. And the Iranian population is aging rapidly.

And just because you've got a real mean pitbull, it doesn't mean you ever have to actually let him off the leash. Probably better if you never do.

Iran is playing games with this. If they wanted a shooting war, they could just fire on our warships. They constantly taunted them under Obama, with dozens of mock-attacks and near-collisions each month.

When Trump came in, they stopped. This was because he issued new ROE that said if they get too close, blast 'em to hell.

So if Iran wanted to go all-in, they could.

This is about making the US fire the first shot for world sympathy, and because John Kerry told them to make Trump shoot first.

313 First of all, fuck Bloomberg. They're mouth breathing retards.

And George Conway should be that aggressive in fighting the war on carbs. Because his fat ass never served nor does he have the background to even open his mouth for anything other than that chocolate cake he eats every day.

I believe Trump is wrong not to take some type of action. It looks weak, not benevolent. Those 150 assholes weren't civilians. They were IRGC who just shot down the drone and painted our P8 with about 30 personnel inside.

So is the tactic here to wait until one of our men is killed or injured? Is that Trumps "red line"?

Dumb.

The Iranians will be back because right now it's inconsequential to hit us. Guarantee they escalate. They do every time there is no response.

Posted by: Marcus T at June 21, 2019 08:07 PM (VkWRL)

314 Tho sensible bottom line [no need for specific - overt, military - response], that quoted item is packed with silliness. Trump is very aware of how well the isolation of Iran is proceeding, and the Iranian regime is acutely aware of it.

Very unlikely Tehran takes Kerry's advice seriously, whatever it is. His value is a potential trouble-maker, but a marginal one.

And ffs, do people keep up with anything, or view anything in it's actual context? Iran is the central enemy of the entire eastern Arab Sunni world [apart from a weird mutually convenient but link-up with the odd Syrian regime, which is of declining utility], and of course Israel. It is diplomatically and financially isolated as never before, the Euros have complied like weak sissies with our sanctions offensive, even Moscow has sat on its hands.

An American strike on some missile sites would change none of that.

And everyone speaks of "incident" and "response" as if we're not already in an intense phase of a 4O-yr old conflict, involving lots of covert, financial, cyber, and proxy action [by both sides, but mostly ours]. The drone thing is one thing in a context of many ongoing things, all of them going our way.

It costs that much because the sensors are expensive. That's also why you see cost numbers that are all over the place.

Their is also a kind of circle of cost inflation - we spent a lot on this drone, therefor it must have awesome sensors. We spent a lot on the sensors, therefor the drone must be fancier. We spent even more on this fancier drone, so we must have even better sensors...

340 Trump is the master of human psychology. The mulahs air defense guys pretty much now know who is going to die if a manned US plane or ship is attacked.
Would you turn on your mobile radar set, broadcasting your location when US planes are on the way? Add a little rumor that among all those surface mount chips on the boards in your radar set is one that's given you away anyway and it might be a good time to run away, run away.
Hey Mulahs its a good time to start questioning the loyalty and dedication of your air defense crews Maybe you should threaten reprisals against their families. That will work out well. Think of how many smart, able guys will volunteer for that.

Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable and Profoundly Unserious at June 21, 2019 08:04 PM (pw+jk)

It costs that much because the sensors are expensive. That's also why you see cost numbers that are all over the place.

Their is also a kind of circle of cost inflation - we spent a lot on
this drone, therefor it must have awesome sensors. We spent a lot on
the sensors, therefor the drone must be fancier. We spent even more on
this fancier drone, so we must have even better sensors...

As I just noted above, this incident is relatively minor, next to the broad array of things going on right now, which involve Iran losing. Iran is under tremendous pressure, they have no good options.

*"Calculate" is a bit of an exaggeration now - while the savviest adversary, by far, in the region, at this point Iran is fairly desperate, pushing any button it can find to try to relieve the pressure, so some of their moves, like this one, will be pretty dumb

396 IMO it's more of a self-preservation move by Iran. Eventually it comes down to who controls the military (specifically, the Republican Guard). The economy of Iran is absolute crap. Their economy decreased by a massive amount in the last year (close to 5%). Inflation is flirting with 40%.

The Iranian people are not happy with their government right now for domestic reasons. The military is not happy with their government right now because of domestic AND military reasons. They feel helpless. And, when the people fire up another of those massive countrywide protests (which can and has happened at the drop of a hat) the Mullahs need the military to keep their heads from decorating a spike in downtown Tehran. So, they let them off the leash to feel a little less impotent. That's a dangerous tightrope to walk....but the fact that they are doing so suggests the common citizenry is on the edge again. Maybe a nice big ass "Water RIghts" protest to start things off. If our CIA wasn't a bunch of political wranglers, they'd have a team of operatives over there right now stirring things up.

He's the chief and needs all opinions, "good" or "bad". So far he's done a fine job picking wheat from chaff. And Bolton is a valuable resource. He's not commandeering the situation, just advocating for his position. But the decision will be Trump's and Trump knows it.

One miscalculation by Trump at their urging and entangling the U.S. in an ill-advised war now could torpedo his presidency and his re-election.

But punch incredibly hard, and let the bad guys know that they screw around at their great personal risk.

I remember what turns out to be called Operation Praying Mantis. Iran elected to screw around, and the Navy sent a message that to do so earned a free, all expenses paid trip to the bottom of the Persian Gulf. Just a little effort shut up a lot of people.

If we learned anything from Pearl Harbor (We haven't; look at the amount of isolationists we have and people who would much rather have the federal government bribe people than provide for the common defense), we should nip things in the bud before they fester. Either you burn a little blood and treasure (a favorite phrase of the isolationists and appeasers) now or a whole hell of a lot more later.

502 We only know a drone was shot down by Iran, nothing more. Does any one trust the legacy media or FNC? No. This could have been an elaborate deception/warning to show the Iranians what we can do, and then pull back at the last minute. Trump could have used other reasoning but the 'saving Iranian lives" is impossible to attack by the squish EU or Iran lovers, err I mean the entire Democrat Party.
We know it kills Bloomberg Opinion to write anything positive about Trump, even when he makes the apparent "right" call.We also know the Iranian economy is imploding, they desperately need money and most likely would try to extort China because they have the most to lose from interruptions in oil/energy shipments via the Straights of Hormuz.Either way, advantage Trump.

503 Iran claims the total strait of Hormuz as their territory. hence, no ships can get past the troll. due to the natural dip into Iran, 12 miles gets to land on the UAE point. where is the international passage. time for a cannal thru UAE and close the strait with mines

504 Conway is probably what's known in NeverTrump circles as a Reluctant Cuck. The kind of guy who knows his wife is getting railed at her Executive Branch job by a strapping, ripped Deputy Foreign Envoy or a Senate Relations Aid or even an Under Secretary of the Admiralty and is extremely ambivalent about it. Unlike most other NeverTrumpers, he doesn't get off on the fact that his wife is getting pounded while he wallows in his obese shame.

======You guys are overlooking something important about the cost: Research Development (RD). You're correct that the actual cost of the hardware is WAY below 123 million, but it took a lot of man hours to figure out what the hardware should be.
In regular industry, once the RD is done, you build a bunch of units spreading the RD across them. Since very few drone, each has a heavy RD cost.I work in Aerospace. Also there is a fair amount of graft.

506 Seems like they could just use some of the 100s of billions Obama gave them to buy the FBI, CIA and a few FISA judges. The Clinton Foundation almost pulled it off.

Posted by: DamnedYankee at June 21, 2019 10:03 PM (SsrFm)

508 There is no need to use military force unless you use it in a manner to resolve the problem. The problem isn't a drone or oil tankers, it is a regime of religious fanatics who seek to spread their influence by any means necessary. They have been at war with the world since 1979.

If force is used it must be used in such a manner that Tehran doesn't doubt its Gods have abandoned them and hell is opening to greet them. Nothing less will end this regime. I for one have been pateitn for over forty years. That's more than enough patience for these crazies.

As my mom used to say when a snake threatens your children, kill it dead.

509 Iran became a serious problem when the demorats sided with the ayatollahs against the shah. Let us not forget in more recent times jihad Obama gave the middle east huge amounts of American money, military technology, nuclear technology, and an entire
American military army equipment under the shame excuse that we were in such an extreme need to leave urgently. Demorats and Obama own whatever now comes in the way of trouble from that region, North Korea too.

510 YOU pay reparations if you'd like. I'll just remember my father who worked himself to death, taught himself algebra, biology, short-hand, typing and geometry and held a full-time job, managing to go to war for three years, lost his parents, and came back to finally have a child by his beautiful wife. He paid all his taxes, was good to everyone, never called anyone the n-word or any other kind of word, and whose best epitaph was the black man, a friend of his whom he'd helped to get the job below him, unable to enter the funeral home because he was in tears. So much of his hard-earned money went to pander to others who did not work themselves to death. Reparation? Give me back my father.

511 We don't need war with Iran. What we do need is regime change. As we learned in Iraq, that can't be imposed from the outside: the people themselves have to make it happen. We can help them, encourage them, do everything in our power to cripple the regime and limit its power to hurt its neighbors; but this will have to come from the bottom up.
The revolution in the 1970s showed that there are two Irans: the rural, conservative, religious Iran, and over that, an urban class of educated, westernized Iranians. Rather like what's happened in this country, only far more exaggerated. The urban class should be our allies against the regime, but launching a war against Iran would unite them with the regime against us. We need to be smarter than that.

However, the problem with sanctions is that the scarcities they create re-enforce a regime's power over the population. That's been the case in Cuba, and it was clearly demonstrated in Saddam's Iraq. Sanctions need to be devised so that maximum pain is felt by individuals who are allied with the regime, such as the heads of the Republican Guards. Here, our European "allies" being a serious obstacle to regime change.
As for Conway's vaporing: clearly, he believes the caricature of Trump as an out-of-control warmonger. As Bugs Bunny once said, "What a maroon!" Trump's ten-minute remark clearly was intended for the mullahs, to give them pause when they next feel trigger-happy.

512 Look up Feint. It makes the opponent keep his guard up which degrades his defensive posture over time, tells you what his reaction time is, where his defense network is set up and the bunkers they run too.It also told the US who is a spy or leaked news of an impending strike before it actually happened. Show just how good the Iranian response would have been.

Regime change can't be imposed from the outside. Hitler; Mussolini' Imperial Japan?

What are you a Harvard graduate with honors in history?

You don't understand the revolution in Iran nor the overthrow of Saddam as your post demonstrates the lack of knowledge and insight into both cultures. Iran's revolution was an urban one skippy, I was there. The urban population wasn't and isn't westernized, educated or more tolerant. But you know better.

Tell us skippy of how many years you served overseas, of your vast military and diplomatic experience. You can always tell a faculty lounge troll from his ignorance and arrogance.

I love your analysis of sanctions. You have a backbone made out of silly putty and have apparently experienced the depth of poverty and extreme want resulting from the lack of 2% milk today. Sanctions will break a nation if they are harsh enough and that nation has limited resources. Iran's centralized government made the typical central planning decisions that created the same sort of prosperity the world sees today in Cuba, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and North Korea, as well as all the other socialist paradises round the world.

But keep posting. You are a walking advertisement for the failure of the education system. Have you considered running for Bernie's senate seat. You'd be the perfect replacement.
