Holiday On The Hudson
George Benjamin Luks

From the Cleveland Museum's description (emphasis mine)

A sun-dappled scene of middle-class leisure, Holiday on the Hudson is an atypical work by Luks, who more often turned to gritty tenement subjects for inspiration. Throughout his career, the painter fashioned himself as a brash, profane, and hard-drinking antagonist to New York’s genteel art-world establishment. The museum purchased this work just four months before the artist was beaten to death in the wake of a speakeasy argument.

I like the painting. I like the colors. I like the fact that it's boats, because boats are awesome.

It's weird that they're all pontooned together. The only way to get to your boat is to step over five others. And if you leave then there's a gap. So it must be some sort of party, an organized event where we're all going to raft up together.

It's the kind of day that could end with girls taking their shirts off.

It's interesting how many works in museum collections never see the light of day... for various reasons. Usually a museum will keep specific works on a regular rotation. These are the one that give the museum prestige or are guest favorites. Some stay in storage forever because they are so delicate that just bringing them out would damage them. And some just aren't good enough to be shown but were donated by a major patron's great uncle on their mom's cousin's side so they can't get rid of them.

Another that stuck with me was scooting right up to the beach to raise the periscope for surveillance. Literally going up as far as possible and resting on the bottom, and any wrong motion would mess up the trim and strand the sub.

110 creeper #96: willow, we need to do something about that. J.J. busts his butt to get the EMT up, with more content than you'd see on any other blog, and then we only have an hour and a half to discuss all that good stuff.
It's a travesty.

I sometimes forego the art thread comments to finish up on the Report.

And, you know, like the book and pet threads, conversations could continue after the next post is up. It's not actually required that all corgis run to the art thread when it goes up.

But whoever stays behind will have a small audience.

Which is why, annoying as it may be, we bring forward discussions from previous threads. Like this which I posted last thread:

Ardbeg Jun22 ONT#412:
So it turns out the story of the crazy lady accusing Trump of rape is a subplot from a 2012 episode of Law and Order SVU, right down to the name of the store:

The Cleveland Museum is a beautiful place and the art is great. I went for the first time a couple years ago. I had no idea of the range of art work there. The Asian wing was marvelous. I was pleasantly surprised by a set of very early Christian sculptures. I had no idea they were in Cleveland and they were featured in a tour. I was stunned. I had only ever seen them in textbooks. They're spectacular and bigger than I thought.

170 So, I saw a bullfight in Spain, and I unabashedly and non-ironically loved it.

The pageantry of the spectacle. The terrifying reality of a bull at full speed. The physical reality of several men weakening the beast until one man faces it alone in order to stab it in the heart through the back. The actual danger on display.

When I usually think of "culture", it's usually about what kind of new spices to put on chicken or what kind of music or dance people do. It's so similar to what I experience that to see a sport so fundamentally different from what I'm used to was amazing. This wasn't men going against each other to see who was stronger. This wasn't one man going up against inanimate nature. This was a man up against a living creature with the very real danger of goring and death (I thought a horse had died at one point).

Dolley hates me for enjoying it, but she didn't even go.

placed law enforcement personnel at risk, and that Secretary MacAleenan
had argued vehemently, behind closed doors, against the scheduled
enforcement raid.

If the Examiner story is true, it would mean that besides the laws
against leaking law enforcement raid information, that Secretary
MacAleenan also violated 18 U.S. Code 1324 (A)(iii):

"Any person who - ...

(iii) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has
come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law,
conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal,
harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any
building or any means of transportation;"

Which carries a penalty of five years in federal prison for each count
of violation. Since the scheduled raid expected to round up two thousand
illegal Aliens, the potential criminal sentence for Secretary
MacAleenan, the author of the Washington Post article - Nick Miroff, and
the editors of the Washington Post [for conspiracy to violate 18 U.S.
Code 1324 (A)(iii)] comes to ten thousand years in prison.

Another thing that bites: they're just completing a widening from two to four lanes of the Sam Houston Tollway I travel to work. Three years of sweating it out, getting stuck in traffic, lane shifts and closures and I'll never get to enjoy the finished result.

That is such a delicate balancing act. Our local gallery sold off all its works more than 300 years old to focus on Modernism/PostModernism almost exclusively. It caused quite the ruckus around here. Saw one of the works at the Met about a year later. So at least their going to good places. I believe Cleveland got a beautiful Gandharan Buddha.

264 One more thing about the Cleveland museum. When my Hatettes were young tykes, Mrs H enrolled them in Saturday classes there which was a bargain just from a materials standpoint. Since the museum is off the beaten path with Case Western surrounding part of it, they offered classes for adults. One of the instructors, Barbara Kraska I think was her name, was earthily outstanding in urging people to get as close as possible to paintings to figure out how they did what they did in the Impressionist room. Plus she gave entertaining. Recently I ran across a folder of the work I did in the attic and was impressed by how, good isn't the right word, non inept it was.

It all went through even though stuff in my almost checked bag went through with stuff that shouldn't be in it. It was Sunday later pm and the line was long. They were yelling at everyone to keep moving. But I got through, and did a gate check for the bag. Never happen at a smaller airport with far less hassle.

284 A few points about filing a felony complaint with the FBI:
1. 18 U.S. Code 1 requires any person having knowledge of the commission of a federal felony to report it to federal law enforcement. It does not say anything about how you came to have that knowledge - but it is a federal felony for you to fail to report your knowledge.
2. When you file a complaint with federal law enforcement the rest of the process is secret - even were you to ask the FBI about the progress of your complaint - they won't tell you anything. The case only becomes public at the point of an unsealed Grand Jury indictment or of an arrest as a result of a sealed indictment.

3. The FBI is required by law to investigate good faith complaints.
4. The problem is not the FBI - so much as it is the U.S. Attorneys - who aren't prosecuting obvious felonies that a first year law student would win against Perry Mason for the defense.

Let's say your motorcycle goes off the road and you end up in a valley obscured from the road and it bursts into flame and you can't get it off you because your back is broken so you die in pain and terror and then coyotes abuse your carcass and when LEOs finally get to you it takes dental records and a tattoo to identify you.

Well, then your mother goes through your computer and when she's over being shocked by the pron she finds that you have a Horde friend who can report back on the tragedy.

Don't you want the Horde to know the grisly details?

"In a generation hard hit by the Wall Street crash of 2008, it forgives all student debt and ends the absurdity of sentencing an entire generation to a lifetime of debt for the 'crime' of getting a college education," Sanders said in remarks prepared for delivery at a news conference Monday with the proposal's House sponsors, Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, and Pramila Jayapal, D-Washington.

Then, rather than being arrested for pointing a gun at the presumed illegal ( how would he know the person was an illegal?) he said that he had a great bonding experience with the cop at the accident scene over the make/model of his fire arm.

A great story, though.

We took our 2007 Volvo XC90 up through east Texas on 92 octane premium gas. The 200 mile trip revealed gas mileage of 19.25 mpg.
Gassed up at a marina that sold ethanol free regular 87 octane and on the trip back home we got 23.5 mpg.

480 458 I'm surprised no one commented on Michelle Obama wearing the yellow blouse in the painting above.

Oooooh, you just prompted me to compare Mrs. Obama in her famous yellow outfit to Mrs. Trump in her recent (and probably famous) yellow outfit.

484 The Cleveland Museum general collection is always free admission. Only (expensive) traveling exhibitions carry a charge. A fantastic gift.

The other thing I like about this museum is the broad collection, because you can grab a little exposure to many areas of art, many people like the depth of the Asian and sculpture collections. The museum even has a beautiful Sargent they bought in the last year or two and a couple of Turners. You know, if you like that sort of thing.
