I've taken heat in my artsy friend circles for openly expressing admiration for Norman Rockwell, many of whom went after him for the usual reasons: sentimentality, appeals to nostalgia, kitsch, and so on. I shrugged it off.
Rockwell achieved the emotional effects in the people experiencing his art that he set out to achieve. In a few instances, he achieved elevation, which is supposed to be the highest goal of any artist. People often feel closer to God and Truth when experiencing the Sistine Chapel, for example, and for those receptive to it, they can experience it with some of Rockwell's paintings. That is no small thing. Posted by: troyriser at June 21, 2019 09:43 AM (y2JAS) 83

Biden summed up the Democrat/Iranian position: "President Trump's Iran strategy is a self-inflicted disaster."
In other words, it's all America's fault. This was also the position of Imperial Japan at Pearl Harbor. FDR was denying oil and money to Japan and DJT is denying nukes and money to Obama's Ayatollah. I think the president smelled a set-up. Everything was proceeding a little too smoothly. Obama had eight long years to salt the bureaucracies with Iranian moles like himself. What if Iran was waiting and completely prepared based on their treasonous conspiracy? Perhaps the president was trying to smoke them out. The #Professional Liars will spin this as "CHAOS!", but President Trump is keeping America's enemies off balance--both foreign and domestic enemies. If there is even a difference anymore. I understand you are unhappy. And that women are at the root of the issue. However, I aver, from my single & married days, that if you let women affect your happiness you will rarely be happy. I had some rough times too. Every time I went to sea I had to find a new girlfriend. What saved me was to take some small piece of happiness -- exercise done well, pretty sunset, good music, etc, and hug it for all I could. Finally, I saw your joy on Jeopardy. You were living the dream. That kind of joy, with a breezy nonchalance and witty repartee, is a winner. In life, with women, and for yourself. Good luck, my good man. I always loved this painting. It's a rather simple one for Rockwell who did so many crowded, complicated scenes. This is simply sweet: the cuddle (first time probably), the abandoned fishing pole and bait, the daisies, just picked, in the little girl's hand, and the puzzled expression for the beagle puppy show how some things are changing for the children. Even the use of the moon in the background, something that changes all the time, might be a metaphor.

Norman Rockwell, many of whom went after him for the usual reasons: sentimentality, appeals to nostalgia, kitsch, and so on.
Posted by: troyriser at June 21, 2019 09:43 AM Several years ago, the Detroit Institute of Arts hosted a Rockwell exhibit. My baby bro and I took our parents for Dad's birthday. It was packed. Young, old, black, white... It ended up being one of the most popular exhibits there. He considered himself an illustrator but your description of 'well rendered cartoon' is just ad hominem. His work is much more than that by any measure. Your opinion, my opinion.
I'm not talking about "his work", I'm talking about today's drawing, the one that's in front of us. Also ad hominem means attacking the person, which I didn't. Even for Rockwell, the illustrator, I find this at the corny end of his spectrum. I kind of hesitated because everyone's having fun with this, but one of the things we do in the art thread is look at stuff and react to it. If it's Albrecht Duerer's bunny nobody takes it personally if someone doesn't like it. Well, I think this is a maudlin bit of treacle. Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 21, 2019 10:04 AM (fuK7c) 188

Regarding Iran: The more interventionistic branch of the right decided to bet hard on the nevertrumper side of the 2016 Republican Primary. They lost their seat at the table, like it or not. The isolationist "no war at any cost" side took their place. The only thing balancing them out is the vague sense amongst much of the base that the US should be respected worldwide and the fact that Obama made such a hash of foreign policy by selling us out at every turn. I hope that that's enough because isolationism in the 21st century is beyond stupid.

Perhaps. But IIANM, Trump is loathe to get us roiled into another Middle East maelstrom. By launching the air assets, getting ships into position STILL sends a loud message to the Iranian regime. You know the Iranians saw all that unfolding on radar, etc. This gave them a taste of what hell will rain down on them if they try anything more.

another rainy morning on the Main Line...
t if you let women affect your happiness you will rarely be happy. The Black Orchid corollary to this bit of wisdom is "..if you let OTHER PEOPLE affect your happiness.." We choose to be happy, that's the only way it works, unfortunately. The other side of that is, for me at least, sometimes I do choose to be maudlin because I enjoy that too, on some level. I'm happy it's raining, IOW. I'm only happy when it rains, ha ha ha. ok I MIGHT be suffering mentally from the lack of sunshine up here a tiny bit! The thing I had asked for prayers on (a very "privileged" thing btw, nothing really and truly worrisome) is going surprisingly well. So thank you! and keep it up, because this apparently is a "process" and we'll be working on this all summer which is not what I was expecting. I took a leave of absence from work to focus on this which was smart but it's also been costly to our family finances and my mental health lol. So thanks for being here guys. It's really nice for me to talk about something OTHER than this "project" with people who are not insane. sorry to be so opaque but a) we are superstitious and don't want to jinx anything and b) I'm pretty sure there was a Moron with relevant expertise and I tend to get myself and others in trouble so I'm just going to shut up about it now Posted by: BlackOrchid at June 21, 2019 10:29 AM (Rarvo) 298

Nah. They've seen this movie before. So have I. It's the same shit Trump accused Barky doing in Iraq. The ROE's were cut in a way we couldn't go after most known elements. The IRGC elements quickly figured out where the lines were and exploited them while our guys got killed as a result. I didn't stay quiet when Barky did it. I'm certainly not going to let Trump pull this shit. Responding to a shoot down of your asset i international airspace by taking out their AGM sites, staffed or not, is a measured response. But, you know, we have assets in place. *wags finger* They don't give a fuck and he's going to find that out when next time our guys come home in a box. Posted by: Lurking Lurker at June 21, 2019 10:49 AM (FiUMj) It's almost like everyone in the MSM had all of their attacks on Trump written up ahead of time, just waiting to see which way he went before picking which pre-written attacks they needed to run. In response to some of military people who it was said upthread wanted to go ahead with the strike - What Trump knows, that the military doesn't really grasp, is that this is a Political contest, not really a military one. Both political in the contest of wills between Iran and the US, and political in the sense of the Presidential campaign now starting. What do you think John Kerry has been telling the Iranians, seriously? He's telling them how to inflict max political damage on the President, in order to help the Dems replace him with someone more amenable to them, like Biden. And that's why the Iranians have rolled out this very limited series of provocations, designed to get a whole lot of attention but carefully calibrated not to cause any bloodshed - because actual bloodshed is always the Big Red Line of escalation. The first side to shed blood in a contest politically justifies almost any level of bloodshed in return, and that's what Iran has been trying to goad Trump into doing. I'm sure Kerry told them that of course he would take the bait. And that's also why Trump was correct to call off an attack which would cause 150 deaths, maybe not militarily, but it was absolutely the right thing to do politically. And now, by going public about it, he puts the burden on the Iranians to make the next move - do they up the ante, or do they accept that their plan didn't work, and back down? 402 Technically you also have to be sincerely repentant. Imperfect repentance(which still passes so long as it is sincere) is from fear of Hell and the like, perfect repentance is for love of God. In both cases you have to be firmly resolved to sin no more.

I am holding criticism of Trump on this Iran thingy for now. I think that we are not being told the real reasons the fireworks were halted. 423 I don't want war, I want to prevent it. The conundrum is that by ignoring initial aggression with insouciance, you get there faster then by any other means. Sometimes you need to beat people back with a stick, so they don't roll over you with a log.
Posted by: Marcus T at June 21, 2019 11:06 AM (VkWRL) I agree in theory, but in this specific instance, I strongly believe that Iran, on the advice of John Kerry, who was acting on behalf of the DNC/Deep State, was planning on goading Trump into escalating the situation into one of actual bloodshed, which the Iranians would then use to justify the launch of mayhem on a much larger scale - and which Trump would then be blamed for. You can see the Deep State outlets have already started pitching "This is all because Trump voided Obama's Nuke Deal!!!" Because that's the real goal, that's what they want to bring back. You're correct that a country shouldn't ignore aggression, but a leader has also got to be very careful about being tricked into making a mistake by his enemies. It's almost like everyone in the MSM had all of their attacks on Trump written up ahead of time, just waiting to see which way he went before picking which pre-written attacks they needed to run.
Our ROE's only extend to our forces or those officially under our protection. We can't possibly monitor all traffic in the Gulf. Take a look at one of the online world shipping sites that shows vessel traffic in real time. That area is one of the most heavily trafficked in the world. We also have many assets for monitoring what goes on and drones like the one that was shot down are expensive, we have plenty as they're meant to be "expendable".
Make no mistake, they shot it down because the IRGC was caught red handed on video mining the tankers. It's a great asset but I suspect we probably have another MQ-9 on station already Posted by: Marcus T at June 21, 2019 11:14 AM (VkWRL) 465

>>I'm not convinced that Trump made the right decision. I'll wait and see what happens next.
Seems to me the only decision he made last night was not to make a decision. Yet. He could pull the trigger at any time but once he does everything changes and the risk of war goes up substantially. I don't buy at all that he is afraid of conflict. Giving the ok for the military to take out hundreds of Russian mercenaries in Syria, bombing them for using gas and bombing ISIS until they were dust tells me he is willing to use force when appropriate. The end goal is to get Iran to stop building nukes and to stop sponsoring terror not to bomb Iran. Right now, the sanctions are crushing them and causing them to strike out. So far, their strikes have not been very significant. Trump looks like a statesman right now and holds the moral upper hand. If he decides to strike nobody can say he wasn't patient and that Iran wasn't the aggressor. I believe he will hit Iran but only when he thinks he can do so with the support of allies and dissenters will be shown to be unserious. Posted by: JackStraw at June 21, 2019 11:17 AM (PxX58) 468

The only think this guarantees is our guys will be first to come home in a box. I watched the same non sequitur argument play out in Iraq. Can't hit the IRGC because you know, that's an escalation. Meanwhile men are getting killed every other day by material they supplied and people they trained. But nope. Don't hit this truck, that training ground, this known IRGC element operating in country, etc. I'll be the first to eat my hat if it doesn't play out into an attack where one of our personnel or partner nations personnel gets killed because the IRGC continued to push the envelope. That's the real danger of this approach. Because it doesn't have anywhere to go except escalation from there. Posted by: Marcus T at June 21, 2019 11:23 AM (VkWRL) 470
