Abortions Laws Are Bad For Business, 200 CEOs Who Don't Understand What a Customer Base Is Declare

Let's just stick with our primary identity as the party that does nothing but favors for leftwing corporations.

It's working like gangbusters so far.

Say, are there any other Democrat Client Groups we can dedicate our political lives to servicing? Maybe we should do endless favors for Black Lives Matter and Planned Parenthood, too. I know one of those is incorporated and I bet the other one is a corporation too.

The CEOs of more than 180 companies signed an open letter arguing that state laws restricting women's reproductive rights are "bad for business."
Policies such as Georgia's fetal heartbeat law people's "hinder people's health... and ability to fully succeed in the workplace," the executives maintain.
A number of major film and media companies, including Walt Disney and Netflix, have suggested they may avoid productions in states with heartbeat bills.
Chief executives of more than 180 companies are urging lawmakers to step back from restrictive abortion laws, arguing that they "hinder people's health, independence and ability to fully succeed in the workplace."

The open letter also contends that anti-abortion policies are "bad for business." Among the corporate leaders signing the letter are Atlantic Records & Warner Music Group's Julie Greenwald, Bloomberg's Peter Grauer, Slack Technologies' Stewart Butterfield, Square's Jack Dorsey and Yelp's Jeremy Stoppelman. Other CEOs included the fashion mogul Diane von Furstenberg and talent agency chief Ariel Emanuel.

Via Gail Heridot at Instapundit, who observes, "Increasingly, CEOs want to be seen as persons of the left. And to be seen as a lefty, one has to support the left on every single issue."

Increasingly, I suppose, but it has been this way forever. Even the "Republican" corporatists are of the social-liberal "libertarian" variety. They are products of leftwing colleges and they live in leftwing cities. They are also careerist chameleons who adopt the mores, tastes, and habits of others in the corporate class for purposes of career advancement.

Sorry, but, I know a lot of these guys. I went to school with them. I see them now, if rarely.

But I hear about them through friends.

I don't particularly dislike them, but I know their politics. Even the Republican ones -- or "Republican" ones -- are masters of the formulation, "I usually vote Republican but I'm not like those rural inbred maniacs. I only vote Republican on economics."

I don't think there's anything wrong with putting your career (and your family fortune) above ideology -- some would say that is a conservative tendency -- but it's simply jackass to pretend this cadre (as a whole, as a group) is in any meaningful way affiliated with the right. They're part of the right when they want a favor for their business or a tax advantage; otherwise, they salute every rainbow-colored flag the left runs up the flag-pole.

And it's not just that they're secretly True Conservatives but Playing the Corporate Game by adopting a public liberal line. No one really lives their lives that way -- not for long.

People don't like lying or counterfeiting their true beliefs, so if someone is in a situation for more than a few years where they are required to lie about their true beliefs, they will change their beliefs so that they are in accordance with that which their social cohort demands. That is, they will stop lying, but only because the lie has become the truth.

People just don't like living split lives like that. If the dominant urban liberal millieu demands that they despise Republicans who do not hew to every new demand made by zealous social liberal crusaders, they will simply change their beliefs over time so that they honestly embrace almost the entirety of the social liberal agenda.

They're not necessarily bad people, but they are people, and people tend to adapt their personalities and beliefs to create as little social friction with their social cohort as possible.

It takes someone with a very strong sense of personal sovereignty and willpower to resist this natural process of incorporation into the herd.

And it's lunacy to continue pretending they are core members of the conservative coalition. They are barely members at all, and only members of convenience when they have something they want from the actual coalition.

They're the first to defect in almost any situation. I know some corporate types who were actually among the hardest of hard conservatives when I knew them at school who fundraised for Hillary Clinton in the last election.

They're Bill Kristol types, except they come by their money more honestly.

They don't have to be treated with any special enmity, but it's time to stop treating them with any favor or privilege. Treat them as you would labor unions -- if there's some political deal that can be struck, strike it, but stop doing favors for them under the completely-jackass assumption that they're members of the conservative movement.

They're not. At best, they're independents leaning liberal.

Yes, there are some genuine conservatives high in the ranks of corporations who resist the Siren song of getting along well with your fellow liberals in the corporation, but they're rare birds, and even more rarely can express their conservatsm in anything more than whispers among some carefully-chosen confidants.

Sure, but they still have to deal with yappy activist, now fired actress getting all her activist pals on social media bitching about them.

Think I read that not being able to film in tax-friendly Georgia would require a more expensive production in another state. So regardless of how Lefty Netflix and Disney execs are, they do still want the cheap option of filming in Georgia. So they'd rather pressure Georgia to cave then get into a PR fight with activist actors. Just my guess. They care more about pleasing their Hollywood staff and pals then pleasing Georgia voters/politicians.

A lot of businesses have profited enormously from the Big Feminist Lie that women are happier and more complete working, than as wives and moms.

This drove wages down for corporations, and the women who did it were convinced that this was somehow in their interest.

The net effect of course, is that these women have crappier lives where they have to deal with all the problems of working life and none of the fulfillment of home and family, until they look around at their wasted lives and get their face eaten by cats one night after too much sedatives and pink zin.

How they bought into the notion in the first place is beyond me. Their husbands came home harried from work every day, living for the weekend, living for vacations, grinding through so they can have some time with their families, and then going to an early grave saying "I should've worked less."

And they looked at that and said "Boy, that sure looks... empowering?" SMDH.

Yes and no. The female reproductive system is kind of like Windows, and is not always reliable. Plus there is also user error.

Which fits perfectly the template that the so-called "elites" in politics and in the corporate world are as American as an anchor baby.

That "country" has taken over the former united States and have installed themselves at the highest positions of power and control as any conquering nation would do to those it defeated.

Their allegiance is to others of that "country" who are globally active.

The most CEOs-per university in the Fortune 500 is University of Wisconsin at 14 -- and the number drops into single digits by position 4 on the list (University of Michigan again).

It's a cute idea, but that's not really what the case was about - the libel claims were not from the original fracas, but from when Oberlin officials helped pass out a flyer claiming Gibson's was Rayciss, and refused to do anything to counteract the lies being spread. AND then Oberlin's administration moved to kill an important supply contract with Gibson's, just to punish them. And then they doubled down and doubled down for 2 1/2 years on the abuse directed at the family, and this wasn't the students, this was the School Administrators.

One nice part is that Dean Raimondo (Love that name) IS going to be personally responsible for some of the damages, because she was named in the suit. (and she was the prime orchestrator of the harassment)

The govt school system after WWII, decided to use the national socialists as examples of far right and communists as examples of far left. That makes absolutely no sense and has poisoned the minds of the stupid since.

In America, the left is still communist or their wannabes and the right extreme is libertarianism bordering on anarchists. Slightly to the right of the middle exists the conservative, those of us who don't want communism but prefer the small govt and states' rights as created by the founders. Since there is little threat from the nutball libertarians, our opposites are the communists.

The left, as always projects their hate, because communists hate everyone who owns anything, on us.

Sending other people to the gallows is now "bravery".
I guess in light of some parents just flat out murdering their spawn, permitting one to live long enough to be permanently damaged in the government school kennel system is perversely seen as "brave" as long as "brave", in this context means "cheap, sadistic and cowardly".

I honestly expect the hardliners to "lose" again. I'm not sure why they'd want to get violent when the plan they've been using all these years seems to be moving along quite nicely. Only James Bond level moron villains would think some kind of military action would be in their interests at this point.

My understanding is that there is some *reason* that the pill doesn't work for some very few women and that's legitimate. But I always sort of figure that if you ultimately want children then having them out of season is something that can be adapted to, and then do something more permanent like getting snipped. Failed birth control doesn't seem like a good reason to abort.

There are legit medical reasons to abort and I'd have claimed that no one actually pretended that there wasn't until recently I suddenly started seeing appalling things like someone claiming to be a medical authority saying that tubal pregnancies should be allowed to die naturally before removal and that fetuses attached inside the abdomen (not the womb!) should be attempted to take to term. WTF?

This doesn't help.

Ah, formally the stockholders own the company, but you forget who hires the CEO - the board of directors. Which is largely composed of ... other CEOs, with a few lefty celebs and legacies (Chelsea Clinton) thrown in.

While formally interlocking directorates are illegal, de facto they exist. Is CEO #1 going to break CEO #2's balls, or is he going to play pat-a-cake with him, in the expectation that his board will do the same with him?

And who are the big stockholders, i.e., the ones with the most votes? Mutual funds, banks, pension funds, and other financial institutions. Joe Sixpak is wasting his time turning in his proxy vote with a few lousy shares, while some fund manager at Fidelity, Vanguard, AFSCME, SEIU etc. has Avogadro's number of shares to vote.

In addition to which, some founders get cute with the voting rights of the various tranches of stock. Zuckerberg has done that: there are a shitload of shares out there, but only the series B shares (IIRC) have voting rights. And by curious coincidence, Zuckerberg owns most of those shares.

Same thing with the Sulzbergers and the NYT, again IIRC. Most of the shares are non-voting. Who has most of the voting shares? Why, the Sulzbergers, that's who.

Thanks for that atheist's worldview.

People who think like you described generally cannot comprehend a worldview that considers the Imago Dei - that is how you get a system that favors one form of statism vs another.

It's instructive to live in a socialist country, even in a European socialist country, where they don't have full-on socialism. It's also infuriating, because the basic idea is that the government will take a lot away from you, and then give some of it back as a public service.

So houses are small - make that very small - with postage stamp-sized yards, but they'll take your money and provide parks for the plebs. Now maybe you'd rather have the money, and the ability to buy a bigger yard, but you don't have that choice, which has been made for you. It's infuriating.

Before being offered a position back in the U.S., my wife and I were looking to buy a house in Europe. The realtor proudly showed us a house in which in one room I literally was able to touch opposite walls. The lawn in the "backyard" was about the size of a bath tub (I'm not exaggerating). The kitchen window opened onto the sidewalk. You could literally shake hands with passersby while doing the dishes.

A colleague's house had a sitting room with two sofas, facing each other, each with its back against a wall. My colleague and I (both over six feet tall) literally had to sit with our knees interdigitated. That's how small the room was.
