Wow: Crossfit, Inc. Ends Use of FaceBook, Stating that FaceBook's Heavy-Handed Censorship Dictates That It Is No Longer Fit to Serve as a Marketplace of Ideas

I've knocked Crossfit before (chiefly because guys like Elgintensity told me to) but man, am I loving them today.

CROSSFIT, INC. SUSPENDS USE OF FACEBOOK AND ASSOCIATED PROPERTIES

CrossFit is a contrarian physiological and nutrition prescription for improving fitness and health. It is contrarian because prevailing views of fitness, health, and nutrition are wrong and have unleashed a tsunami of chronic disease upon our friends, family, and communities. The voluntary CrossFit community of 15,000 affiliates and millions of individual adherents stands steadfastly and often alone against an unholy alliance of academia, government, and multinational food, beverage, and pharmaceutical companies.

CrossFit, Inc. defends relentlessly the right of its affiliates, trainers, and athletes to practice CrossFit, build voluntary CrossFit associations and businesses, and speak openly and freely about the ideas and principles that animate our views of exercise, nutrition, and health. This website--and, until recently, CrossFit's Facebook and Instagram accounts--has long catalogued CrossFit's tireless defense of its community against overreaching governments, malicious competitors, and corrupt academic organizations.

Recently, Facebook deleted without warning or explanation the Banting7DayMealPlan user group. The group has 1.65 million users who post testimonials and other information regarding the efficacy of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. While the site has subsequently been reinstated (also without warning or explanation), Facebook's action should give any serious person reason to pause, especially those of us engaged in activities contrary to prevailing opinion.

Facebook and its properties host and oversee a significant share of the marketplace of public thought. To millions of individuals and communities across the world, Facebook and its properties remain the platforms where ideas and information are exchanged. Facebook thus serves as a de facto authority over the public square, arbitrating a worldwide exchange of information as well as overseeing the security of the individuals and communities who entrust their ideas, work, and private data to this platform. This mandates a certain responsibility and assurance of good faith, transparency, and due process.

CrossFit, Inc., as a voluntary user of and contributor to this marketplace, can and must remove itself from this particular manifestation of the public square when it becomes clear that such responsibilities are betrayed or reneged upon to the detriment of our community. Common decency demands that we do so, as do our convictions regarding fitness, health, and nutrition, which sit at the heart of CrossFit's identity and prescription. To this end, all activity on CrossFit, Inc.'s Facebook and Instagram accounts was suspended as of May 22, 2019, as CrossFit investigates the circumstances pertaining to Faceboo'’s deletion of the Banting7DayMealPlan and other well-known public complaints about the social-media company that may adversely impact the security and privacy of our global CrossFit community.

These publicly sourced complaints include but are not limited to the following:

1. Facebook collects and aggregates user information and shares it with state and federal authorities, as well as security organizations from other countries.

2. Facebook collaborates with government security agencies on massive citizen surveillance programs such as PRISM.

3. Facebook censors and removes user accounts based on unknown criteria and at the request of third parties including government and foreign government agencies.

4. Facebook collects, aggregates, and sells user information as a matter of business. Its business model allows governments and businesses alike to use its algorithmically conjured advertising categories as sophisticated data-mining and surveillance tools.

5. Facebook's news feeds are censored and crafted to reflect the political leanings of Facebook's utopian socialists while remaining vulnerable to misinformation campaigns designed to stir up violence and prejudice.

6. Facebook, as a matter of business and principle, has weak intellectual property protections and is slow to close down IP theft accounts.

7. Facebook has poor security protocols and has been subject to the largest security breaches of user data in history.

And finally,

8. Facebook is acting in the service of food and beverage industry interests by deleting the accounts of communities that have identified the corrupted nutritional science responsible for unchecked global chronic disease. In this, it follows the practices of Wikipedia and other private platforms that host public content but retain the ability to remove or silence--without the opportunity for real debate or appeal--information and perspectives outside a narrow scope of belief or thought. In this case, the approved perspective has resulted in the deaths of millions through preventable diseases. Facebook is thus complicit in the global chronic disease crisis.

For these reasons, CrossFit, Inc. has placed Facebook and its associated properties under review and will no longer support or use Facebook's services until further notice.

What they're getting at at the end there is that the US government's official dietary advice is completely wrong, and has been for fifty fucking years, causing millions of people to die earlier and live unhealthier lives, but because this completely wrong information is "official" that means all dissent is, per FaceBook, either "misinformation" or conspiracy theory -- and that's probably why FaceBook banned this "Banting" diet group.

And a note on that: A man named Banting was one of the earlier people to publish a low-carb diet plan -- back in the 1800s. It worked then, it works now. The "new" and "untested" low carb/LCHF/Keto/Atkins diet is actually far older than the supposed tried-and-true government diet plan.

And by the way -- how are the official US dietary recommendations working out? Oh, that's right, obesity and diabetes rates have soared since they've been adopted by the public.

So FaceBook is doing with the nutrition debate what it does in the political debate: It decides there is one (1) correct view of an issue, that view being pushed by the same clatch of left-leaning bureaucrats who decide everything, and then bans anyone who proposes any other view.

I've said this before, but if you read Gary Taubes on how the US government "science" on nutrition came to be, it's amazing: The fat-is-bad hypothesis became government-approved "fact" the same way that global warming did. Literally -- there was no actual scientific evidence backing the fat-is-bad hypothesis, so the ringleader pushing the theory, Ansel Keyes, created his own conference, sent out invitations to doctors he knew agreed with him, and then voted that the fat-is-bad hypothesis was true.

They created a "consensus," in other words, and then, having no actual evidence to back their theory, claimed that a "consensus" was just as good as evidence. Even better, maybe!

And now FaceBook has decided that the existence of a "consensus" is enough reason to squelch people's contrary opinions.

All in the name of "safety" and "truth," you understand.

So that's the end of all debate, all critique, all challenge: A corporate monopoly run by a weirdo nerd-weakling-on-a-power-trip will decide what the True Holy Book of Science and Right-Think says, and chase all the infidels into the shadows forever.

Fuck. This. Shit.

Finally, someone with some heft and cachet is standing up to FaceBook.

Today I can say to CrossFit, Inc.: Bro, today, you definitely lift.

BTW: This issue is important to CrossFit because while CrossFit has no official diet, I think about half of crossfitters are paleo (which is a cousin of keto), and then another quarter are keto.

Are the rest vegans? Maybe the rest are vegans. I don't know.

But CrossFitters are generally not followers of USDA dietary advice or the food pyramid.

Mandy P. writes...

290 This Facebook thing is actually a really serious concern in the low carb and keto community. There are several prominent figures that have had their Wikipedia pages removed, and the belief is that it's due to vegan propagandists and activists. Jimmy Moore and Doctor Noakes are two really frequent targets.

Yes, I thought of that too -- it's the vegans flagging these people for recommending high amounts of animal protein and fat.

And what I thought was: Vegans are the sort of leftwing community Facebook would immediately obey, and start banning people based on their shrieks.

Do you think someone could get vegans banned for the various lies they propagate?

Nope!

Let's face it: ALL dietary advice - all of it - is laughably wrong. Every scintilla - ridiculous.

I've said this before, but if you read Gary Taubes on how the US government "science" on nutrition came to be, it's amazing:

Gary Taubes is a charlatan. He started out writing pop sci articles on physics, then realized the money was in diet/ nutrition bullshit, and switched over. He's a cut above Kevin Trudeau, but not two cuts. Time to wake up and smell the coffee.

I am not an anti-vaxxers, but I do think it is valid to question the *number* of vaccines required and the schedules recommended for getting them (several at once, etc.). That, and the fact that seemingly no one in government wants to acknowledge the impact of out of control immigration/open borders has on the spread of disease and degradation of herd immunity.

While I agree the government never gets anything right, if kids would stop eating sugar, soft drinks and chips... those are not in the food groups. Fast food?

And remember, so much of the processed food has corn syrup or some other type of crap in it if you are not eating pure food, without additives.

Eat real food, watch your caloric intake.

Yes, I assume he personally intervenes in some situations, but more often than not, I'd guess lower level minions are fully in charge.

One of the biggest problems with social media is that left leaning folks aren't just the majority of total users, they're the VAST majority of the subset containing activist users that actually take the time to flag and complain about stuff.

And the young kids who are tasked with reviewing algorithmic suspensions aren't gonna rock the boat when those suspensions reinforce their own preconceived political beliefs and trust in authority.

99 Anyone sticking with FB for anything other unavoidable narrow business purposes needs their head examined.

Users have no control whatsoever over what happens to the content they upload, the private messages they send, the summary of their use of the platform, or the information that is gathered from their mobile devices (which is basically every fucking thing that can possibly be gathered from them, mics and cameras included).

There is a misconception - among younger users, because they're gullible and don't think very hard about tech, and among older users, because they're just gullible - that you can simply set things "private", and that private messages are what their name implies. They are not. FB sells access to these with zero fucks given about what the third party does with them.

There is also a misconception that the potential data gathered from spying via GPS, Wifi usage, acelerometer, microphone, and camera is too much to realistically exploit. That is simply not the case, and not only do you have FB doing it, you have hundreds of creators of other apps that are FB affiliates also working on it.

The privacy issues are severe enough that we've cut off a number of family members from receiving pictures; people were doing stupid shit with them, even with the metadata removed.

I can still like the movies themselves. It's about story, not the world in which it takes place. I just let the assumptions of the world go, try to get a hold of them on the story's own terms, and then work from there.

Good example (that's removed from the corp question) is Children of Men. I find the world visually believable but not terribly logically cohesive (it's cowritten by an outright Marxist so it's a world built on Marxist assumptions). And I still love it.

Regarding Rollerball itself, I've seen most of it once 15 years ago, and I barely remember it.

219 No causal relationship between sugar consumption and hyperactivity has been established. Kids used to get recess and long lunch breaks during which they could run around and maul each other, in addition to any PE classes they had. Now lunch breaks are barely long enough for you to finish your food, and recess is no more. Sugar isn't the problem, preventing kids from blowing off steam during the day is.

But bit by bit, Jonathan becomes the only one in that world who starts to figure out what's really happening, what the nature of his world truly is. Well, others may know, but they all say the System is too Strong, too all-encompassing, you gotta do what you're told, don't cause trouble, don't think for yourself.

290 This Facebook thing is actually a really serious concern in the low carb and keto community. There are several prominent figures that have had their Wikipedia pages removed, and the belief is that it's due to vegan propagandists and activists. Jimmy Moore and Doctor Noakes are two really frequent targets.

There is one group, the 2KetoDudes (they run a podcast) that moved their entire operation to a private forum about a year or so ago. I don't know how much of their audience they actually took with them, but for other groups and companies it's starting to look like it may need to be an option. Dutch cocoa is very low in carbs... I make a hot chocolate with cocoa and sugar substitute and cream... Tastes delicious.
Posted by: It's me donna

If you can tolerate thew taste of sugar substitute, then go for it. I myself cannot resist real sucrose with real disaccharides. I've participated in doing in-house food startup studies that showed that the human tastebuds really do have a notable preference for disaccharides (i.e cane sugar) over lame ol' monosaccharides (i.e. corn syrup, fructose, etc.). It's the reason why "Mexican Coke" (made with real disaccharide cane sugar) always defeats plain American Coke (made with cheap corn syrup) in taste tests. Otherwise, the two versions of Coke are exactly identical.

Disaccharides taste even better if the cane juice isn't refined as much, which is why I always use Demerara sugar if possible. Turbinado and Muscovado are OK too, best Demerara is the best.

They need to reinstate recess and PE. Let the little yard apes burn off some energy and they'll pay attention better in class. And stop drugging boys. They don't act like girls and never will.

white sugar is processed...

it is not raw sugar, and it comes from a few sources

sugar from an apple is not the same as sugar from beets or cane sugar

you can argue the chemical breakdown, go ahead, but it is not the same how your body breaks it down and how it combines with other foods

My personal evolutionary biology theory as to why humans prefer disaccharides is that there are really only three disaccharides possible in our diet: Sucrose, maltose, and lactose.

However, sucrose comes from a plant (sugar cane) that until very recently in human history only ever grew in one specific place (Papua New Guinea) so 99% of humanity never tasted sucrose while we evolved. And maltose can only be created by doing a complicated germination/dehydration process with certain grains, and thus also was unavailable to the human diet until very recently in evolutionary history.

Ah, but lactose, that has always been available to us -- in the form of mother's milk. For millions of years, the only disaccharides a human could ever even possibly experience was in mother's milk. So we evolved to associate that specific kind of sweetness with the life-giving/emotional bonding experience of breastfeeding when we're babies.

When we taste disaccharides, we are instantly transported back to that perfect time in infancy. That's why disaccharides are so addictive and taste so much better to us.

Sucrose (and the much rarer but still delicious maltose) short-circuit the brain and triggers the same kind of pleasure we remember from being newborns.

And yes, it's pretty much the same reason why adult men like boobs so much. They can't help it --it's genetically ingrained.

On the other hand, monosaccharides are what early man ate once we're grown up (fruits, etc.), so don't have the same core-experience associations.

That's my theory and I'm stickling by it.

The biggest problem is a mismatch between diet and activity level. If you're going out to plow the back 40, then you need a huge calorie-laden breakfast to power through until lunch.

If you're going to the server farm to swap out some hardware, not so much. You can get away with a small snack instead of a full meal without ever feeling hungry.

Posted by: ace

Nutritionally, yes, all sugars eventually are equal in the body.

I'm talking about TASTE preference, not nutritional profile.

Disaccharides DO have a different taste to the human tongue/palate, and in some as-yet unquantified way, they DO produce some extra kind of emotional "rush" in the first few seconds after eating.

Ultimately, once digested, of course, they have the exact same calories as any sugar. A teaspoon of sucrose will make you just as fat as a teaspoon of glucose pr fructose. Of course.

Patreon tossed a few people for behavior on other sites like Facebook and Twitter, and that's what caused some of the ruckus.

Patreon gives newbies a veneer of respectability, but long term, it's a waste for more serious people.

On the subject of ADD/ADHD, yes, there really is such a thing. It's got a neurochemical component and everything. I've known people who have it and respond to medication. The problem is that it is overprescribed. But that doesn't change the fact that some people legitimately have it and legitimately respond to treatment.

What about beet sugar? When and where was that harvested?

this is interesting. When France was blockaded by England during the Napoleonic wars, France was starved of sugar, so Napoleon paid scientists and botanists to figure out how to refine sugar from beets (which france could grow).

But here's the thing: Sugar cane is hard and expensive to grow. Apparently the farming of it is so hellish they mostly used slaves to do it.

Consequently, sugar was very expensive until the 1840s or so.

But the refining of sugar from beets was a game-changer and sugar prices plunged after that, and sugar started being put into everything.

and poor people started getting fat, and getting diabetes-- previously, only rich folk had managed that, because only they had regular access to sugar (and of course, highly refined white bread too).

it's a weird thing, the reverse of the current situation, but poor people used to be thin and used to have all of their teeth, while the rich were fat and had mouths full of cavities and dentures.

No. But about 1/3 of kids with autism have changes in behavior with changes in diet. 2/3 it has no effect at all. So it is worth a try. If it works for you or your kid, then great. If it doesn't then experiment a bit, but don't beat it to death. It is worth trying, but don't go bankrupt trying endless diet combinations/special foods. 534 Speaking of unscientific yet far-reaching government policies, consider the linear model of toxicity. The idea is that if a certain toxin exposure level produces X level of risk, exposure to 1/1000 of that toxin level produces 1/1000 the risk level. Non-linear response, and very importantly, threshold level of exposure, are never considered.

The linear model was the idea of one guy who pushed it hard. There is no scientific basis for it,
and it causes unnecessary, very costly restrictions and expense.

Posted by: Tom Servo

Until about 3,000 years ago, it was an extremely rare hyper-local plant that only grew in a couple of places on one island (New Guinea). Then explorers/traders from India discovered it (apparently -- its discovery was not recorded or noted down anywhere), and brought back to India sometime B.C. - -we're not sure when. But even after that, sugar cane was confined to India for many hundreds of years, and made into kind of rough sugar crystals called "jaggery." It was traded (as a precious spice) to the Persians and thence to Europe, but very little ever reached the West. It was only when the Arabs tried to invade India that sugar became more commonplace; they were repelled militarily, hut during the invasion they "discovered" sugar cane growing and took some plants back with them, and planted the canes first in Mesopotamia, and then ultimately on Crete, and processed the juice in Europe's only sugar refinery at a Cretan town that came to be called Qandi, named after the Sanskrit word for "lump of jaggery." Which, by the way, is the origin of the word "candy" -- candy originally was just crystallized sugar on a stick from this Cretan refinery, and was spelled "sucre de candi" by the French Crusaders who first encountered it.

A year or two ago, marketing in our rating a ton of business, but as they've changed their algorithms any ads we put up, again within our own community groups, get buried very quickly. You borderline have to spam the groups with your ads to get views. It's the same on personal and business pages. Very little of your audience sees what you post, and you get incessant pushes from FB proper to pay them to "boost" your posts to try and get more eyes on them. I'm sure that means they bury the non-paid ones to entice people into paying.

575 I certainly didn't mean to imply that ADD didn't exist, but I believe it's misdiagnosed more often than not, especially if it's a teacher saying a student has it. 98% of the time, it's a boy student and boys are naturally more active than girls of the same age.

They need to reinstate recess and PE. Let the little yard apes burn off some energy and they'll pay attention better in class. And stop drugging boys. They don't act like girls and never will.
=======
Interestingly enough. Studies with kids, boys and girls, neurotypical and those with special needs, have shown everyone learns better after physical activity. Although the improvement is more marked in boys. It is the most marked in kids with autism. Activity is critical to learning in children.

576 Pregnancy is not comfortable. It is not attractive. Many women suffer through constant sickness. The after effects on the body can be life-long. I know many people say things about the beauty of a pregnant woman, the glow, etc. I just don't understand why so many girls/women allow themselves to go through this only to get an abortion at some point, even at the worst point, when it is so very easy to prevent in the first place. You get pregnant because you want to have a baby. Why in the world so many use abortion as the birth control is mind boggling.

577 On the subject of ADD/ADHD, yes, there really is
such a thing. It's got a neurochemical component and everything. I've

it is overprescribed. But that doesn't change the fact that some people
legitimately have it and legitimately respond to treatment.

Since I've married a teacher and seen how the education sausage is made, so to speak, I've learned a lot about things that I thought I already knew.

ADD is real, and it is heartbreaking. There is a kid in Mrs Hade's class that was recently put on his meds...and now he's normal. Before he couldn't sit, couldn't concentrate, couldn't do anything but run around and be a nut. Now he's not a mind-numbed zombie, he is bright and engaged and has gone from a failing student to one of her best.

I still believe it is over prescribed and wrongly medicated in a lot of instances, but when it works, the difference is astounding.

And when the medication is actually given to the kid instead of sold on the street. Which is a thing.

Same deal with the cane fields on Oahu in the '70s. Us kids LOVED it when they'd burn the fields, the black ash would come down with long strips of the cane stalks. You could see the veins and texture of the plant as long as you caught it in mid-air. Handle it the slightest bit roughly and it'd break down into black ash powder.

What about beet sugar? When and where was that harvested?
Posted by: rickb223

That's a good question. I don't think much research has been done on the origins and history of refining sugar-beet juice. It's the one "counter-example" to my theory, because sugar-beets can grow in colder climates, and thus humans could have had access to disaccharides earlier in history, if we had just known how to refine the juice of these specific tubers. Don't know when that practice started. It may have just been a way to compensate for cane-sgugars shortages and expense at some point, and didn't pre-date cane sugar.

Posted by: ace

Great historical info! This fills in some blanks in my history knowledge-base.

So, yes, sugar from beets came AFTER sugar from canes, as a cheaper substitute. And by sheer chance, it also was disaccharide.

We don't know the details, but early explorers did follow the coastline down through what is now Bangladesh-Burma-Thailand-Malaysia-Indonesia, to New Guinea. They never really had to go out into the open ocean, so it wasn't that difficult - -just crawl along, hugging the coastline.
