Dunkin Donuts: We're Not Looking to be Political, We're Not Looking to Start "Conversations." We Just Want to Give You Some Coffee and Ice Cream.

I find this interesting, and hopeful.

For a long while, we've had nothing but #Woke marketing from corporations.

Now this is a major corporation expressly declaring themselves to be anti-#Woke -- or, at least, to not be #Woke in any interactions with their clientele.

Bias here: I love Dunkin Donuts, and always have. I also love their donuts. To me, they are donuts. I've always compared all other donuts to Dunkin Donuts.

I know people like Crispy Cream but to me, those have always been too sweet. Not saying I don't like them, just that Dunkin Donuts hits the sweet spot for me, literally.

I think Dunkin Donuts hits the sweet/salty/bready balance right. But then, I grew up with them (well, they were the "real donuts" I'd get when my parents weren't buying Kaboom-style donuts from the supermarket or a shabby hobo in an alley).

(BTW: Shout-out to 7-11 donuts, which are also a touch sweet, but which are very good. No one ever seems to give them credit for that.)

So be sure to check out Dunkin Donuts' dark roast iced coffee as the days get hotter, and appreciate the fact it's not coming with a free side of #Woke racial agitation.

And get it with extra heavy cream. They've got it, and they don't mind being generous with it.

Dunkin Donuts executive Drayton Martin reportedly critiqued Starbucks at the International Trademark Association's annual meeting in Boston, according to a tweet from law professor and Boston Globe writer Alexandra Roberts. Martin was named vice president of brand stewardship at Dunkin Donuts in May 2018. Her role focuses on implementing marketing and messaging strategies for the donuts and coffee company, according to The Drum.

"We are not starbucks, we aren't political-- we aren't gonna put stuff on our cups to start conversations," Martin said, according to Robert’s tweet. " We don't want to engage you in political conversation, we want to get you in & out of our store in seconds. it’s donuts & ice cream-- just be happy."

Guys, don't just say this in a trade association. Run on it, as they say in politics. Make it your brand.

People are sick of this shit and would like to register that.

Flashback: All of the best donuts are not donuts.

Let 'em. One of the most astonishing things about all of this stuff going on for years now is that no one has learned to just let it go. Let them rant and rave. Ignore it and simply don't apologize and just keep your head forward and they'll move on to another target. They crave the constant dopamine hit of the new conquest and won't stick around if they're not getting it.

43 This was probably more appropriate for the last thread, but I saw this guy interviewed.

Palmer Luckey's firing proves that even the most talented of tech wizards can be purged for wrongthink.

The founder of Oculus and a former Facebook employee, Luckey joked in
a May 22, MSNBC interview about his 2017 firing: "I gave $10,000 to a
pro-Trump group, and I think that's something to do with it."
He also argued that Silicon Valley tech bias will not be solved by ousting CEOs.

"This is a cultural problem in the valley of a monoculture where
everyone thinks that they're doing the right thing for the entire United
States and the often aren't," Luckey said. "Replacing one person isn't
going to change the way that things work" and mused that the "rule of
the mob can oftentimes be worse than the rule of one person."

63 ESPN has a long way to go before they are no longer woke.

The same day their CEO decided that people didn't want politics with sports reporting, I went to their website to look at the headlines.

Long forlorn story posted about some black female track star who is planning to run in the Olympics. The hitch in that plan is that she is now pregnant.

Unplanned of course, as they always are, despite the fact that she is college educated, has a long term boyfriend whom she was planning to marry next year and apparently used or didn't use any kind of reliable birth control.

So it went on and on about how awful female athletes are treated when they get pregnant and may not be able to train or play their sport and how unhappy that makes their sponsors. How horrible it is that sponsors dump them. How there are so few trainers and physicians who can support an athlete during a pregnancy with workouts designed to keep them in top playing condition while pregnant. How they will miss events and possible not be able to be in shape after delivery to make their Olympic dream a reality.
And mostly how this is so unfair, because men don't have to deal with any of this. Just women.

It was one big long whine. All about a choice this twit made to have sex and now has the consequences. The only redeeming factor in the entire story was that she didn't abort the baby. But holy cow does she resent it.

92 There is a donut truck outside the local Cabela's. I can't explain its existence, except that possibly Mr. Cabela said "damn, those are good donuts".

I usually don't carry cash and carbs are bad and all that, but they actually fry the donuts in the truck and the smell is amazing. So a little while ago I went to the truck and the girl asked what I wanted.

"Whatever it is that I'm smelling".

It was apple cinnamon sugar donut. It was super greasy. It was sublime.

Our local Cabelas also has a donut truck. Mr. Donut it's called and yes, the smell is unreal. Walk up and the little golden rings of goodness are floating around in sizzling oil , waiting to come out into their cinnamons sugar bath before being handed to you. Once they are cool enough.

Cabelas also sells those damn candied pecans in a paper cone that are made in front of you. Another vice that's hard to walk away from.

But what the hey, I was a Lib once too, although without the decapitation fantasies. Here's Moz doing a really excellent "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," from the iconic Pretty in Pink soundtrack. Must be some subtext here, something going on in his personal life at the time, based on the altered lyrics and the fact that he downright almost loses it at a couple of points. Whatever the deal was, it made for a highly compelling performance:

138 I envision a commercial where a construction worker, who's up at the crack of dawn, and obviously needs a boost to get through the brutal day ahead, walks into a generic foo-foo coffee shop that is a thinly disguised Starbucks. He looks at the menu in despair - lots of weird names and fancy drinks. An obvious SJW woman takes his order. He hesitates.

"Um, you got coffee here...?"

The SJW starts lecturing him on the beans that are ethically grown in Java,...he interrupts the SJW.

"Yeah, whatever, coffee...and a donut?" She starts lecturing him on how he should order a fritatta instead with cage free eggs locally sourced....he looks bored. His eyes glaze over. All he hears is the SJW blah blah blah that slowly becomes more distorted...

"Listen lady, I just want a coffee and a donut, alright ?"

She reacts in shock "What did you JUST call me?"

Cut to same guy at Dunkin' Donuts. Same girl behind the counter. "Coffee and a donut" he says. bam. It's in his hand. He smiles. She smiles "Have a great day!". He walks out the door, takes a sip, and smiles even more broadly. The sun is just peaking over the horizon.

Voice over "Just be Happy. It's going to be a good day... "

146 Started going to Dunkin when they were the first major company to require every new hire to be run through E-Verify. The donut quality has dropped in recent years, since they're no longer all made in-house, but they're still pretty good.

The coffee, on the other hand, is fan-fvckin-tastic.

My favorite Dunkin will always be the one in the San Antonio International Airport. Bus dropped me off there at 4am after 8 weeks of Air Force basic training. I made a bee-line for Dunkin after I cleared security.

I've had crispy creme's rolling off of the conveyor belt, and they're marginally better. But c'mon. A proper donut is what you get spinning drunk at 2am by picking out what looks good under the counter. I'll choose Dunkin' for chain fast-food style, sure. But the best ones are the local mom-n-pop Chinese donuts, that float out of the bag, are crispy on the outside, like a cloud inside and melt in your mouth - with just a hint of glaze. Better than any French pastry.

164 In the seven major geographic areas I have lived in as an adult, I am fortunate to have found great donut places in four of them, so I only ever wound up at a Dunkin Donuts on business trips. And compared to a great single location donut shop, they aren't that good.
Better than Krispy Kreme, though. We are in the process of selling a house and moving out of Seattle, and my only regret is that we will be leaving behind one of those four "great" donut places, and where we are moving (way west of Seattle), the donut pickings are slim. It's like an involuntary diet program.

Still, I have to give Dunkin' Donuts credit for not going "woke". I guess I can always stop by and get a regular coffee to vote for them with my wallet. Just have to find the closest location.

Posted by: HTL at May 23, 2019 08:37 PM (QaAkH)

165 Worked at one ca. 1981. Made me hate the donuts for years. The franchise owner did things like make the coffee stronger than the corporate recipe said. Corp reps would visit now and then and always ask why he wasn't making it the way he was supposed to. "Because that's how my customers like it." That ended that issue. He was a demanding boss, but his store ALWAYS had customers in it. He had a policy of "anybody in a uniform, whatever they want on the house." So there were ALWAYS cops hanging out there (one of which was my father). He'd tick off the no. of times the fast food joints within a few blocks had been robbed over the past several years, and note that he had never been robbed (and it didn't really hurt his bottom line since there was always a surplus of donuts on each shift that didn't get bought). What I hated about that job was being scheduled to work every Sunday from 5:00 am to noon. That time slot from 8-12 was an absolute madhouse. Left you out of breath. Dreaded every Sunday.

177 Commercial 2

Harried mom with a kid walks into a thinly disguised starbucks. She orders. SJW starts hastling her at the counter "Would you like to round up her purchase to give money to save the orange breasted sap sucker?" She's distracted by her kid, tugging at the hem of her skirt. "What?" she says.

The SJW answers "The sap sucker, here I have some literature to give you." She starts handing all this crap to the mother, who is trying to balance her purse, keys, papers, and a kid tugging at her hem."

"Mommy I need to use the restroom..." Woman looks over at the bathroom, where an obvious homeless guy is just coming out, looking wrecked.

Cut to same woman at Dunkin' Donuts. Same girl behind the counter. "Here is your spiced latte ma'am!" Woman is juggling her shit to take it, and the counter girl says "Here, let me hold this for you."
and helps her get organized. Kid runs to the bathroom, and it is clean and looks great. She smiles. The waitperson smiles "Have a great day!".

She walks out the door with her kid, takes a sip, and smiles even more broadly. The sun is just peaking over the horizon.

Voice over "Just be Happy. It's going to be a good day... "

Particularly when his cabinet officials, who were present at the meeting, all came to the microphone and stated that Trump was calm and deliberate in his comments to her. She then went out and immediately lied about his demeanor during the meeting, claiming he was screaming and yelling.
This is the second time this has happened with the Democrats. Remember during Trump's first year, Schumer and other Democrats claimed Trump was screaming, yelling and acting erratic during a closed door meeting, which was actually recorded. The recording of the meeting was played and no such thing happened.

Even the" shit hole countries" comment was denied by most of the republicans attending the meeting, saying if he said it, they didn't hear it because he didn't say it to them directly.

In Chinese restaurants that do dim sum, you can get things that look like donuts as one of the offerings.
The first time, when I asked my Chinese friend what they were, he just said "Chinese crullers". And he was right. Pretty good, too.

Must be something about fried pastries and the Far East, however. One of the four best donut places that I have ever been in was Korean, not Chinese. Don't know if it is still there, but...Happy Donuts, Hermosa Beach CA. On Sepulveda. Amazing buttermilk bars. That was 30 years ago, however.

I watched some of that briefly, and it was entirely because of a centerfielder for (IIRC) the Sooners. Fun size, if you will. Tiny and adorable and still very much trying to be a girl while playing with all the overweight lesbians.

More importantly, I saw one of the worst blown calls in any sport ever. The pitcher threw the ball, the batter tipped the ball, and the tipped ball hit the catcher in the crotch, and the ball *didn't* hit the ground.

That ball was caught (I'm guessing even female catchers wear cups), and the batter wasn't called out. I think the umpire thought it somehow went off the catchers glove or something crazy.

Anyway, it was an incredible play and I'm glad I got to see it.
